Title: I Was Wrong/ The Golden Dorito Award
Post by: Elven Doritos on July 29, 2006, 01:47:04 PM
Well, I'll start off simply: I was wrong.

Horribly, horribly wrong.

"About what, Mr.ElDo?"

Well, let's roll back a few months and take a look at the time during the transition to the new forums... I was being an insufferable prick. I absolutely detested the idea of moving from the Shadowfell boards, and at the present, I can't possibly imagine what I was thinking.

When the new boards came around, I made it very clear that I loathed it. I overlooked Ishy's work and, using my predisposition against it, acted like a spoiled child and constantly complained about the inferiority of the new boards. Hell, we hadn't had a chance to debug at all, and I was whining more than contributing.

Over the course of the first month in the new boards, all of my angst and outrage at the board switch melted away. I looked back today at the earliest Cogs threads and the last few posts in the Shadowfell boards that I made, and I was misguided, short-sighted, and selfish.

So, Ishmayl, I'm sorry for that. Might be a few months late, but there it is.

I realize that things I take for granted on these boards would have been impossible on the Shadowfell boards. On these new boards, we also have built a thriving community of posters, each of whom helps to contribute to a productive and insightful environment for world-builders, and it's arguably my favorite site on the web.

"Alright, ElDo, apology accepted. See you around, then!"

Actually, I'm not done, little voice inside my posts. ;)

I've been somewhat neglecting the community of late and taking it for granted. There are a ton of awesome people here with fresh ideas and good attitudes, and I mean that sincerely.

At this time, I would like to recognize five members of this community who have made it a fun, productive, and lively web community. These five have exhibited exemplery effort on behalf of the web community and may thus consider themselves recipients of the new "Golden Dorito Award" in recogintion of their excellence and contributions to the Campaign Builder's Guild.

Those five posters, in no particular order:
1) Túrin
2) Natural 20
3) Cymro
4) Luminous Crayon
5) Xathan

Please note that these awards are not meant to exclude anyone or hurt anyone's feelings. After all, it's not even site-sponsored-- it's just silly ol' ElDo expressing his thanks.

Special thanks to our site administrator, Ishmayl, and to the technical staff that makes this place happen.

You definitely have to make a pretty little "badge" for this award to host on the site somewhere.

Or, we could always do a "Golden Cabbage" award as well.

ElDo, your apology is neither late, or even necessary.  Your earlier misgivings may have even been founded, considering both the issues we've had with e107 software (it's damn buggy, but we're slowly working out the kinks) and the server.  However, I very rarely hold any sort of grudge, and especially not on the internet.

Cheers!

Well, I made a trophy for people to ooh and ah at, but it's subpar at best. I've also constructed a little icon (http://webzoom.freewebs.com/red_valor/Golden%20Dorito%20Icon.png) that's kind of neat.

I bear nobody any ill will over the transition. Heck, I was conspicuously absent from these boards for the roughest part of it, so I'd have no room to criticize anyone for not helping us move, even if I wanted to.

I wouldn't give me an award. I'm just a longwinded, opinionated guy who posts here from time to time. I'll accept this honor just the same, ElDo, in hopes that I can gradually live up to it, but there are plenty of people here who deserve high accolades more than I.

I'll add another voice to the crowd; this is a really great community, full of exceptional people, and I know that my creativity and my enjoyment of this hobby have been enriched by being in contact with the CBG. You all deserve high praise.

I'm really happy to see the community growing in such an amazing way, with such amazing results. I feel honored to be receiving this award, even if I may not deserve it as much as others.  All I've really done is post like wild-fire in a futile effort to usurp your position.  however, if that aattempt resulted in a more lively and grand community today, then I guess it was for the best.

I am proud to be a contributing member of this community, I'm proud to accept this Golden Doritos award, and I'm proud to know ElDo(even if its just over the 'net).  It takes a great amount of courage or a sane amount of boredom to fess up to such a thing as being a brat, but you have done it gracefully and we all appreciate the thought.  Thank you ElDo...

I'd like to thank the Academy

Wow, I feel really honored by this. Everyone else on that list has been around longer than I have and is around more than I am, so I feel like I'm a halfling among the giants here, with a titan giving me the honor. Thank you, ElDo, for your contributions to this community. Many a time have you brought a grin to my face, and the faces of many others, and your endless creativity astounds me. Plus, you actually finish things and stick to them, which I can always admire. Thank you again, and you definatly deserve an award yourself for everything you have done for this community. :D

It is always a good thing to see someone with the guts to apologize on a message board, even when (as in this case) the apology is totally unnecessary. I'm also very proud of having made it to your list, especially considering the other four are some of the finest people and most creative contributors of these boards, and I feel out-of-place in their company. ElDo himself, most of all, should be treasured as a member of the CBG. I would offer you an award, but knowing that I can't top the Golden Cabbage Award With Cauliflower Clusters I will just kindly ask CYMRO for a place in the jury that awards that award and retroactively approve of you getting that award.

Having said that, I'd like to shift everyone's attention away from ElDo, Natural 20, Cymro, Luminous Crayon, Xathan, Ishmayl, brainface, daggerhart and myself to direct it to our community's growth, which has been picking up lately, including a couple of new members that have immediately become very active. This, to me, proves that we are still a strong community that still has lots of potential for growth. Let's hear it for our great community, which shares a friendly atmosphere* with a nigh infinite dose of creative input.

We should all get an award!

In fact, I'm awarding the CBG Túrin's Stamp of Approval. While it may not have a fancy name, the CBG is the first and so far only owner of the Stamp. Hope you like it.

Cheers everyone!

Túrin

*-A fact of which I was reminded again when I say Delvesdeep's post A wasted forum for wasted talent! and, more specifically, the reactions it provoked, on the WotC boards.
