This is truly the beginning of the end for humanity.
Just because you can... doesn't mean you should.
Reminds me of this robot (the top one):
Evil Robot (http://www.cracked.com/article_16364_science-dick-5-most-evil-robots-ever-invented_p2.html)
Half the brain, twice the malice.
And yet, still not the creepiest robot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWCYYemtBy0) I've seen lately.
The really scary thought is in combining these. I foresee talking zombie cyborg rats. One can only tremble at the thought of what comes after that.

Science!We do what we must
because we can.
For the good of all of us.

What good can come from empowering Rodents with Cyborg technology? And what about all of the other animals Science has chosen to improve? I'm sure the Sharks with Lasers attached to their heads feel jipped!
I see your problem, you aren't grasping the nature of science. Science is an art of intelligence, not wisdom. You ask science "why" and science responds "why not". You may see the doom of the world at the hands of cyborg vermin. Science just sees a freaking awesome rat brain powered robot.

-It's a safe, legal step to creating neural-responsive prosthetics and enhancements for humans.
-It allows us to learn about brain development and adaptation.
-Organic computing.
Those all seem rather noble causes, eh? Should be fine as long as no one hooks the rats up to weapons.

The goals are always noble until some one makes the rat brained cyborg tank... :P

Where else will we get our funding? Guns=profit. Ratling guns=PROPHETS OF D :( :( M.

Safe for us humans, maybe. I can't help but wonder if the rats are just as pleased with the situation.
Prooobably confused as fuck, at least. I'm not sure how much pain a disembodied brain could actually feel, and for that matter i'm not sure how much of the rat's brain is actually used.
If it's not an entire brain, it seems like the rat's ability to perceive any suffering would be negligible. (Of course, they'd be dead still, so there's that.)
Now do it with a human brain GO!
"So, Frank was kind of a jerk in life, but his brain is totally chill. Especially when it brings me sodas from the fridge. GO BRAIN SERVANT."
Don't worry guys, Aperture Labs has our back.

If I'm remembering correctly, it's only a few dozen cells. Not so much a brain as an extremely simple neural network.
Unhallowed Metropolis happens to have an entire page of their setting book dedicated to brain robots (or brains in jars, really). Nice stuff.
I think I like the thread title as much as the actual video.
It makes me think of someone yelling "Why, God, why?!" only in that South Park episode where they go into the future and everyone is an Atheist.
"WHY, SCIENCE, WHY?!"
I saw this a long time ago. Fun, but creepy, science.
Put simply, this scares the hell out of me.
Ghost in the Shell anyone?
