Title: Immortal - Discussion Thread
Post by: SA on August 17, 2006, 08:16:45 PM
[ooc]As the name more than explicitly states, here's where the Immortal (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?10192.last) setting is to be discussed.  Go nuts.

This thread (and this post) will be expanded upon in time.

As always, Salacious Angel reveals these settings slowly and cryptically, leaving me curious.

I was surprised to see you writing about Elves in the Sky, because I remembered your distaste for the typical treatment of elves as we discussed on WotC months ago. But then, you capture the essential elements, cut away the unnecessary, and present your ideas artfully.

I like the clear (and perhaps contradictory) symbolism you've introduced already. The elves exalted themselves above their peers and were literally lifted high in the process. But then, it's an exaltation they don't deserve, with consequences they didn't expect, so that the literal lifting of the elves above the deformed earth is a sort of mockery, and the symbolism is twisted. If I were to hazard a guess, based on other work of yours that I've seen, I would say that more of the readers' expectations area going to be manipulated through twisted symbolism of this sort. I can't wait.

From what I've seen, I love it. Hope to see more soon. I'll have other questions and comments when I do, I'm sure.

Most interesting. I like this take on elves and I was intrigued by your sources of inspiration. Also it deals with the namesake of immortality in a way that actually brings the idea to life rather than being just a vague notion.

That, above all else, is what has always been a real bug up my arse with the elves.  People say: "elves are immortal, that's cool" then basically forget about it.  Immortal deals with circumstances in which the elves' longevity becomes a serious burden - they're not actually immortal, just long-lived enough that the circumstances in which they must live seem like an enduring hell.

Normally, I wouldn't touch elves with a ten-foot pole, but since Luminous is really the only one who, in my eyes, has done something truly innovative with them, I thought I'd give it a shot.  My treatment of the elves doesn't seriously alter them so much as it puts their archetypes in a context where they actually mean something, and their natures (which have been somewhat reinvented) serve as major conflicts within the setting.

And if it looks like I'm falling into cliche traps, feel free to kick the shit out of me.  In fact, I'll encourage it.

I really like this.  It's got a fresh feel, and I love dark fantasy.  I also like the way you present it.  In fact, I think I might want to steal the idea of using the ic tags when in "story-mode."  Your style is direct and draws one in, but reveals only enough to leave us wanting more.  Since I'm always uncertain how to present a setting (given there is so much information to present), I envy your talent for doing so.

I'll keep watch on this.
