Title: Campaign Setting Showcase- Week 18
Post by: Elven Doritos on August 29, 2006, 04:57:10 PM
I guess I'll handle this deal while Ishy's dealing with his laptop problems, no big.

So, we've got...

1 - Urbis by Jurgen

2 - Xiluh by sdragon

3 - Ari by Limetom

4 - Jade Stage's Formerian Empire, Luminous Crayon

...right?

Astraea won this week's, so it's out of the running.

Uh, Wix? This is the thread for next week. I dunno what you're doing. ;)

Please keep the thread as spam-free as possible (I can't believe I'm the one saying this, crap). I don't want to have to sift through posts.

Yeah, that sounds about right-- once a month. We like to have a variety of settings spotlighted, and it's only fair to give other people a chance.

Not particularly. Maybe the Setting of the Week needs a bit of a kick in the ass-- any ideas for an overhaul?

kick in the ass? overhaul? two participants?

so jurgen and i are having a traditional fight-to-the-death over this?

sound fair 'nuff to me....

Interestingly, this is the first week in our history of the Setting Showcase where all the participants (so far, at least) are settings that have been showcased before.

I'll consider throwing the Jade Stage into the mix for a possible other round, perhaps focused on a specific nation or area, to make things less intimidating to potential readers. But that still wouldn't solve the problem that there's no "new blood" in the mix this week.

C'mon, you non-setting-submitting people! We need new things to read!

Okay, so dealing with that "kick in the ass," what exactly could we do to spice this up a bit?

I think many of us want to have things a little more polished before submitting anything.  I don't really have any specific ideas on what I would even want feedback on, and I'd want to work on presentation a little.

Also, for many users, I believe classes have just begun, which may affect many people's time to dedicate to this for a few weeks.

While this is a valid concern, it should be emphasized that the Showcase is certainly not limited to "finished" or "polished" work, not by a long shot. The feedback that it ideally should generate is a useful tool for further refining and polishing your work.

Why not feature the Showcased setting's ideas as priority topics in the Draw Someone Else's Work (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?12824.post) thread? I'm sure there are many other cool options; there really is a wealth of interesting activity here, and a lot of it has potential to make the Setting Showcase a little more peppy.

Yeah I agree with Luminous, it just seems that the Showcase is a bit anti-climatic right now. I really like the idea of incorporating the Adopt-a-Setting because it gives a hands on view of settings which cannot be gleaned from just reading their material. However, classes are just starting like Pheonix noted which might pose a problem.

I guess its time to cave...

If I can add 2 at once, add both Ari (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?9475) and the Cold War Gone Warm (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?12684).  If not, just Ari.

NOTE: I've been informed its only one setting at a time.  I'll go with Ari.

While the stick is out of the question, we could make a very strong suggestion that he who is chosen as the Setting of the Week reviews next week's setting (or alternatively you have to point out a review of a setting you made last week before you can submit one of your settings as Setting of the Week). In fact I'm going to follow up on my own advice and review Astraea (or some part of it that is easily taken apart if Astraea turns out to be large).

Actually, the suggestion in parentheses might be even better: you have to have a reviewing history (though not necessarily of another Setting of the Week) before you are allowed to get in the mix. This means no one has to do anything, everything remains free will, but you won't reap if you haven't sowed. We shouldn't be too strict about it (one very constructive comment or suggestion or a couple of ideas should perhaps already qualify as a review) to prevent killing this feature in the process of spicing it up.

You folks have only a few more days left to submit your settings!

With the upswing in recent CBG activity and especially reviews, now's the best time to do so!

Hmm. I almost hate to do it, but I'm throwing my hat back into the ring. Please append the Jade Stage to this week's list; specifically, the Formerian Empire, the part of the setting where most of my recent work has been focused. I'm hoping that if I focus a showcase theme onto a smaller part of the setting, it'll be less intimidating, and maybe it'll get a few more reviews.

sdragon, just PM me with a write-up using these guidelines (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?13763).  I'll get the Showcase up once I receive it.
