Title: my bookshelf
Post by: Kindling on January 23, 2011, 01:56:48 PM
I like making lists sometimes. Not often, I'm not a big list-maker, not like some people. When I do get into it, though, I can really enjoy it, and I've just finished writing down the contents of my bookshelf. It seems like more written down that it does when I just glance at the shelf.

Anyway, I thought someone might be interested or something, and then other people can post what's on theirs, and we can all be like "wow I had no idea person x would like book y!" or "wow I knew person x would like book y!" and it will be fun :)

Also, even though I've called the thread my bookshelf, I have also included DVDs and music CDs, as they also have their own not insignificant spaces on the shelf, alongside the books.

Books with a {u} after them are unread. Yet. I will read them all one day, honest!

I have alot more than this, this is just in my quick access bookshelf next to the computer (the rest is in the bookshelf in my closet).

The Chronicles of Narnia
Jurassic Park
The Lost World
Battlestar Galactica
Earthwreck
Firefox
The Time Machine
Journey to the Center of the Earth
War of the Worlds
Rogue Squadron Series
Hatchet Series
The Silmarillion
The Hobbit
Lord of the Rings
The Book of Lost Tales Series
Interesting Times
Guards! Guards!

...and a bunch of random programming books and references

Just realized that my quick access bookcase has alot of stuff that's been made into movies or are closely related to movies made. I take comfort knowing I've had alot of these before they were popularized by said movies (also most of them are far superior to their movies).

I've got more on my shelves than I care to consider, and I never really got stuff organized since I moved in August. Maybe later I'll work up a little list, as a way of getting these shelves in order.

Curses, now I feel compelled to list my stuff as well.
Maybe I'll start off lightly with a list of my roleplaying books:
D&D 4th Edition core books (Shudder)
Pathfinder core rulebook
A very rugged (read: half-broken) copy of the 3.5 Player's Handbook
Iron Heroes along with Mastering Iron Heroes
D20 Modern
D20 Future
Unhallowed Metropolis (I really need to get around to actually playing it someday)
Unhallowed Necropolis
HOL - Human-occupied Landfill and companion book Buttery Holsomeness
A borrowed set of core GURPS books
the Riddle of Steel, Flower of Battle, tRoS Companion
World of Darkness
A borrowed copy of the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting
Star Wars Roleplaying Game (the newest of its kind)
Eberron books. Oddly enough not the actual setting at the moment... where have I put that...
More D&D 3.5: some complete [insert archetype] books and heroes of horror, as well as unearthed arcana, tome of magic and dragon compendium
A printed copy of the FATE SRD
I have a shameful amount of D&D books hidden in a closet in the room next door. Also, this doesn't really reflect the number of PDF's, free or bought, currently on my hard drive. It's awesome you have a copy of Kill Puppies for Satan Salacious Angel.

ah, who am I kidding... Here are some of my books.
Bas-Lag sequence, Kraken, the City & the City, and Un Lun Dun by Miéville
Lies of Locke Lamora and Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch
The scarecrow series, 7 ancient wonders series, contest, Hell Island, and temple by Matthew Reilly (guilty pleasure)
The First Law trilogy and Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie
The Graveyard Book, American Gods and Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
The Year of Our War by Steph Swainston
The Book with No Name by Anonymous
A Madness of Angels by Kate Griffin
Mister B. Gone by Clive Barker
The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde
2 diaries
The last few Harry Potter books
Game of Thrones (the sequels I have only had borrowed)
Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
The End of Mr. Y by Scarlett Thomas
The Sheriff of Yrnameer by Michael Rubens
Cliffhanger by T.J. Middleton
Manual of Detection by Jedediah Berry
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
The Sacred Art of Stealing by Christopher Brookmyre
Selected Works of T.S. Spivet by Reif Larsen
A self-printed copy of the Translated Man by Chris Braak (underground new weird. Sort of)
Adam by Ted Dekker
Prey by Michael Crichton
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams (my girlfriend currently possesses my Hitchhiker omnibus)
Illuminatus! trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson (crazy, crazy books.)
Necronomicon: the best weird tales of H.P. Lovecraft
Edgar Allan Poe collection
Hunter's Moon by David Devereux
The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski
The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray by Chris Wooding
the latter half of Wheel of Time excluding the two newest (I seriously don't know what happened to my other books in this series)
Dune by Frank Herbert

Gormenghast trilogy
City of Saints and Madmen by Jeff Vandermeer
First two books from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson
Borrowed Dresden Files books
... plus more on the upper shelves, but that's mostly stuff from my younger days
I'm not going to list my non-fiction books as that's a big jumble and some are in danish. I have a handful of dictionaries and variations thereof (Isms and Ologies, the Meaning of Tingo), some books on science & math and their ilk (Spook by Mary Roach can be recommended, although it deals with the more dubious end of science), some history books, and books about superstition and mythology.

Ok, I have a question. Please forgive the tone but I can't imagine I'm the only one thinking this: Did anyone actually read this thread? Like, does anyone actually care about a big list of books that someone else owns? I know I didn't more than barely skim half of the big lists that you all had posted, and I don't really see the point of going through the effort to post a list if everyone cares about my list as little as I care about everyone else's...

Sorry if this comes across as extraordinarily bitchy, I am seriously just asking.

Speaking of, Kindling I notice you're a big fan of The Dillinger Escape Plan. Do you know the band Between the Buried & Me? or the Devin Townsend Project?

And on a side note, I find it interesting to see what's in other peoples libraries. Sadly mine if pretty large, so I doubt I'd get past my lazyness to put down the entire thing on a list (both books and CDs are in the several hundreds each. DVDs I have like 6)

I don't see how it's any different than what people used to list on facebook; when people would have large lists of books and movies that they enjoy. Sparkle, perhaps take this as a list of people's favorite books. What's on their bookshelves are likely to be their favorite books. :)

And yes, that would have been a bitchy question...if not for the fact that everyone was acting fairly solipsistic and not responding to anyone else's interests. Since the responses of person to person were quite limited, your question was probably appropriate.

It is interesting to see and to note that I have read and actually own many of the same things listed here that other people on this site read.

Even if they didn't, I don't see that as invalidating the thread - I enjoyed making the list, for whatever slightly bizarre reason, so... yeah :)

I do know Between the Buried and Me, not a big fan. They supported the DEP the first time I saw them and seriously underwhelmed me.
And Devin Townsend is the fella from Strapping Young Lad, isn't he? I'm aware he has other projects, but I only really know his work with Strapping Young Lad, and even then I only have a passing familiarity.
I have a strange sort of relationship with heavy music in that when it's done well I find it incredibly exciting, but when it's done... well, not even badly, even if it's just done mediocre-ly, I can find very little to like about it. So, for example, Meshuggah big yes, but Trivium or Avenged Sevenfold... ohhhh nooooooo...

I read this post and have at least glanced at a few others.  I am something of a compulsive lister anyway, so it was kind of amusing for me to do what I've done so far.

How is Alternity as a game?  At the time I didn't buy in because TSR wasn't doing the one in-house system, like Palladium, and for some reason I felt that not being immediately able to crossover D&D and Alternity would be a disadvantage.

Since then, I've become intrigued by orphaned, abandoned, and dead too early RPG systems in general.

Quote from: KindlingI have a strange sort of relationship with heavy music in that when it's done well I find it incredibly exciting, but when it's done... well, not even badly, even if it's just done mediocre-ly, I can find very little to like about it. So, for example, Meshuggah big yes, but Trivium or Avenged Sevenfold... ohhhh nooooooo...

Ya I can understand that, I'm very picky with my metal. And Avenged Sevenfold >_<

Quote from: sparkletwistOk, I have a question.

I read this post and have at least glanced at a few others.  I am something of a compulsive lister anyway, so it was kind of amusing for me to do what I've done so far.

Alternity Player's Handbook
Alternity Gamemaster's Guide

How is Alternity as a game?  At the time I didn't buy in because TSR wasn't doing the one in-house system, like Palladium, and for some reason I felt that not being immediately able to crossover D&D and Alternity would be a disadvantage.

Since then, I've become intrigued by orphaned, abandoned, and dead too early RPG systems in general.

Got them.

Thief of Time

Don't actually got them, but listened to on audio borrowed from the library.  So, you like the Death and Susan ones?  Me preference is either the Witches or the Watch.

I love Alternity. The system is very modular and I'll probably use it for all of my settings should I get to run them (there's also a Starcraft Alternity game still on hold that I'm going to run with it). It is, in my opinion, the ideal implementation of gritty 2e/3e mechanics (mostly 3e other than the fact that rolling lower is better).

Yeah, I'm also a huge fan of the Death and Susan books. Death, the Death of Rats, and Quoth the Raven make me laugh no matter how many times I read the books, and Susan is also a very amusing character - she's probably my favorite female character from any medium.

I haven't had a chance to read much of any of the other books yet, but I'm a big fan of the wizards as well, so I might start there. I do also keep hearing good things about the Watch.

I would recommend the watch over the Wizards.

Thief of Time is a good watch one after you've read Night Watch or another watch story first.

Small Gods is probably one of the 3 best of the series. (It is unconnected to any others).

I never enjoyed the witches' series very much; Rincewind would be my second least favorite; but I enjoy the others quite a lot.

I don't have anything really like a book shelf at the moment and I can't list everything. I'm moving soon, though, and I may come back to this at that time.

Agreed, although Esme Weatherwax might be up there with Vetinari for me. Vimes is still the daddy though :)

Not a bad collection, there. I notice you have one of those Christopher Hart art books, though. Have you ever seen any of his other books?

His book is pretty good if you want to draw Anime-influenced American art but it doesn't quite explain how to draw, what I consider, in a true anime style. I've thumbed through his other works before, and they're similar. He does teach you how to draw really well and I like his books, even if they aren't quite the style I'd shoot for.

What sparkletwist says makes sense but we're an odd bunch. Personally, I read all of the thread that was posted while I was at my computer. I have skimmed a bit of it that I have seen from my phone, though.

I read this thread long before I posted at all so it slipped my mind but now that someone else mentioned it, I did take particular notice of Kindling's taste in music. While they're not my favorite bands or sounds, as a musician I have a solid repect for the work of Meshuggah and, even more, the Dillinger Escape Plan. I actually saw those guys on Warped Tour this last year and know a couple of guys (that play in Screaming Mechanical Brain) that are friends with them and went backstage.

I have finally had the chance to really get into discworld and found that I absolutely love it. As such I have decided to buy at least 2 discworld novels a month until I have completed my collection. This is my list as it looks like now in order that I am thinking of getting them.

Men At Arms
Feet of Clay
Jingo
The Fifth Elephant
Night Watch

I have Guards! Guards! and Thud! so I want to complete the watchmen series before I do anything else, especaially since I am immensely enjoying it (and as stated I love vimes and vetinari).

Mort
Reaper Man
Soul Music
Hogfather
Thief of Time

Next I want to read the death series as while I've only seen a few movie and book excerpts from it but I have already fallen in love with the characters of death and susan. Plus I'm told these are all really good.

Going Postal
Making Money

Saw the movie for going postal, thought it was absolutely brilliant, want these two. That is all.

Equal Rites
Witches Abroad
Lords and Ladies
Maskerade
Carpe Jugulum

Got wyrd sisters, seen the animated movie for it and very much liked it, book looks like it will be of the same if not higher quality. So I'm going to finish up the witches books.

The Colour of Magic
The Light Fantastic
Sourcery
The Last Continent
Unseen Academicals

Some people said they didn't really like the colour of magic series or rincewind. I've seen the movie to colour of magic and read interesting times though and I liked them both. Rincewind as a character is a sniveling coward that you want to hate and I love it partly for that reason as Pratchett is so good at crafting the character in that way. Additionally I very much like all the other characters in the books, especially cohen (as well as twoflower and others).

Moving Pictures
The Truth
Monstrous Regiment
Pyramids
Small Gods

And that's the last of them really for the main books. Any thoughts on the books or the order I'm getting them in or even any comments on ones you think I'll really like?

Interesting, I've never thought of him that way. I mean, a coward, yes, obviously, but I've never seen anything hateful in it. Or is that what you meant?

I'd personally read Monstrous Regiment after The Fifth Elephant or Night Watch then do Thud!

Small Gods can be read at any time, maybe even before the rest of the series. It is also one of the best Discworld books IMO.

After the Witch books that deal with Magrat there's the Tiffany Aching books, although aimed at teens (they have chapters unlike most Discworld books) they are quite good and deal with another young Witch.

I got an audio book of The Art Of War, by Sun Tzu.

Amazing work, even though it seemed to be only a "lengthy review" of the work instead of the actual complete work.

Rincewind is who he is because of the book he debuted in. The Colour of Magic is a broad rejection of all the most well-worn ideas in fantasy literature, and appropriately, its protagonist is a broad rejection of all the qualities of a typical fantasy hero (competent, valorous, powerful, etc.) I never thought of him as odious or contemptible, just "poor bastard's in the wrong novel."

I think that's why a lot of people (me included) have a lukewarm reaction to the Rincewind-centric books: I suppose you either dig the constant ribbing at popular fantasy, or you don't. I personally prefer the witches books (where we're instead riffing on Shakespeare, folklore, and fairy tales, and where the protagonist works within, rather than contrary to, the genre expectations.)

Small Gods is my favorite and it is the favorite of two of my friends (I started one on the series with it). [I realize I am repeating myself here, but it shocks me to see it so low on the reading list :D)

I don't remember specifics (it's been a long time), but I remember finding several of the Watch books pretty lackluster. Small Gods was pretty boss, though.

In general, with Pratchett, the books reward readers who are alert and well-read. The broader your base of knowledge going in, the more of the sly references and puns you'll pick up on. (If you need help, there's an online resource (http://www.lspace.org/books/apf/index.html) that may come in handy.)

I've had a number of people tell me to steer clear of the colour of magic series as it is meh and rincewind is annoying/irritating/etc. As for small gods I may well move it up the list since it seems to be quite popular.
