Title: What setting should I review?
Post by: Epic Meepo on September 16, 2006, 12:13:38 AM
I've looked at my schedule, and somewhere at the end of several more weeks of endless working - working on my magazine, working on someone else's magazine, working somewhere that actually pays the bills - I may have just enough free time to sit down and review a campaign setting. The question is this: which setting should I review?

So, I am posing my dilemma to the boards at large. What is the one campaign setting here at the CBG that a busy reviewer absolutely, positively cannot miss? Please pick a setting that isn't your own, and don't just tell me what it is; sell me on it.

Anything by Elven Doritos, or what ever he's going by right now. I wish I could say mine, but I've been so bogged down with the minute details that I haven't gotten to update/post anything in a while.

I wish I could say mine, but anything by LC or ElDo is good.

I haven't seen Salacious_Angel around the boards much, and his settings haven't bumped to the top of our list in a little while, so I want to point out these excellent worlds that you might otherwise overlook.

Read Dystopia. Because it's richly detailed and unfamiliar-seeming. Because reading it makes me feel like it's part of a dream: one of those strange dreams that's all subconscious psychology rising to the surface, more nightmare than not, one of those dreams that sticks with you once you've woken up and colors the rest of your day.

I'm going to say you read Jade Stage. It's probably the best setting I've ever seen. (Mostly because of the writing quality and ethocentricity)

I'm going to have to second both LC and Raelifin; Dystopia and Jade Stage are two very unique and flavorful campaigns that should never sink down to the second page.

I'm voting for Red Valor, as it doesn't really get much in the way of feedback, and it's ineresting as well.

Also, the Jade Stage gets a lot of interest anyway, so it can probably take one less review.

I think I'm going to have to change my statement above.  I said Salacious Angel's "Dystopia," and Luminous Crayon's "Jade Stage" were "two very unique and flavorful campaigns that should never sink down to the second page."  I hope that didn't come across as offensive, because after thinking about it, I realize that there literally dozens of campaigns on this site that are both unique and flavorful.  There are some I've just forgotten about (because they've sunk to the dreaded 2nd page), some that I've never heard about (because, unfortunately, I don't have a chance to read every single thread on the board), and some that are so large in scope, that they are, quite frankly, very intimidating to me (Urbis and Orden's Mysteries to name two up front).  Any single setting on this site could use a good, honest, well-thought review, and I'm sure their respective author would appreciate it greatly.

And that pretty much kills this thread... :P

Thanks for the suggestions, and I'm glad to see that the contributions of all members are appreciated here at the CBG!

Counting "anything by ElDo" as a vote for Red Valor, the most mentions thus far have gone to (in alphabetical order):

* Dystopia
* Jade Stage
* Red Valor

With an honorary mention going to "fuzzy appreciation for all campaign settings".

::thwack::

But seriously, Jade Stage has been up for review for a week and hasn't had anything said about it, so that would be a wise choice....

That's not entirely true. I had a very detailed review from Raelifin at the very beginning of the Showcase week (including a gorgeous fanart map!), and a likewise very detailed review from Phoenix Knight early this morning (which I still need to respond to in the depth it deserves.)

Don't get me wrong: I always like a review, or even simple confirmation that someone's reading along. But my review drought is not quite as bad as all that. :)
