Title: Best RPG ideas ever?
Post by: beejazz on September 21, 2006, 12:25:46 PM
This is a place for mulling over "what if"... the crazier the better. Seriously, what is your ideal game?

I'm going to toos out there a couple of examples.

The first is a pirate game with drinking as part of the dice mechanics. You've got your d6 and your shot glasses. Roll a seven. To avoid the inebriated math problems, it's best to use cards and dice. Minimal (if any) character creation.

The second would be "those meddling kids"... It'd be a scooby-doo/goonies ripoff with a bunch of kids exploring caves and haunted houses and shit. I was always disappointed that no one really tried this. Character creation would probably be just a couple of archetypes.

The third would be an esoteric and strangely erotic homebrew. Obviously, this has to be a LARP. If the pirate RPG looks alot like a drinking game, EaSEH looks alot like an orgy... with dice.

In that vein, what if? What would *you* do.

A party of kings, emperors, sheiks, etc. adventuring and fighting their own battles in order to protect and meet the wishes of their people.

Haha.

"Orgy with dice..."

Actually, I have nothing constructive to add at present.

Yeah... "esoteric and strangely erotic homebrew" got mentioned on another thread, and I thought "somebody has *got* to write this."

Hell, it could even be a straight-faced social interaction game where taking off an article of clothing equals +1 on a d6 roll... like strip poker but RPG.

Or it could be as wild as Rocky Horror Picture Show with props, leather, and (sometimes gender inappropriate) costumes.

Wait... did I just say that?

I've always wanted a really, really good pseudo-historical rpg set in the Alexandrian campaigns or the post-Alexandrian world.  No magic, no elves, just you, your warhorse, and a shot at rewriting history.

The Chronicle Campaign - a campaign I can DM for years and years with different parties, thus overcoming the handicap of my rather nomadic lifestyle.  The focus is a sentinent book in which each which each party contributes, creating a source of information from many perspectives.

The Hand of God - a campaign in which you play the empored servants of God, constructing - or reconstructing - a world that is at this point half-finished.  Alas, God is an enigma even to you, and your siblings quarrel over his true will and the ultimate purpose of creation.  Sometimes it gets bloody...

This is actually a video game idea I had a while back...

Basically, you play a true dragon from DnD, start off as an Adult, and you just get to go crazy. Play a metallic dragon and defend the humans or build your treasure by destroying level appropriate monsters, or play a chromatic and raze villages, hoard gold, and eat young women. Hell, it'd be fun to play a pen and paper game like this, though it'd really work best as a one-on-one game...or would it....hmmmm....*begins to get idea*

Idea: Multiple players, each with a different dragon color/metal. It's DnD (or at least, DnD-inspired), but it works like a strategy game. You have a secret dragon lair/hoard. You can make strategic alliances with your dragon kin (the other players) (and then stab them in the back, maybe), or you can try to find their hidden lairs and destroy them. You can raze villages or defend the commonfolk. You have to occasionally deal with parties of adventurers who come to kill you, steal your gold, or ask you for favors.

I see it as possibly working like a long board game: it's a little different every evening. Maybe players draw their dragon colors and/or game objectives (amass 1,000,000 gold, raze 5 villages, defeat Silver Dragon player in battle, etc.) randomly from a deck at the start of each game.

That would make for a kickass board game...

I'd play that.

As would I, the board game idea is genius...*plays with it in my head* I might make a prototype game like that to spring on my friends, I'll let everyone know how it goes if I do.

I'm on an Arabic/Mediterranean kick at the moment, so a game that seamlessly blended rules with 1,001 Arabian Nights or even Sinbad-styled storytelling would be kickass.

A Final Fantasy tabletop RPG would complete me!

I would soooo get down on my knees and eat Sakaguchi's grits for an FF game.
