Title: (OOC Setup) Tales of Phaedoras
Post by: Raelifin on March 19, 2006, 01:04:03 AM
Hello, welcome to the first PbP game to be setup on the CBG! Woo!

First of all, I'd like everyone who is new to PbP to read over some of this: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=222737 so that you can get a basic idea of what PbP is about.
While some of the rules don't apply, it is a good place to start.

We are using http://invisiblecastle.com/ for all die rolls. Please link to all your rolls. Use the url at the bottom of the page rather than the page url when linking.

This is a game in my latest world of Phaedoras. As some of you might know, Phaedoras isn't fully functional so I encourage everyone to ask questions whenever they want. When constructing characters I accept material from the following:

Core Rules (not setting)
Phaedoras Campaign Setting (in development)
 - Introduction (http://www.raelifin.com/tome.html)
 - Chapter 1: Rules (http://www.raelifin.com/tome.html)
 - Races of Phaedoras (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=482382)
 - Classes of Phaedoras (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=515083)
 - Witchdoctors, Shamans and Spirits (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=490603)

If you want to use PrCs, feats etc. Make sure to ask me before using them.

At this point I have no set plans for a campaign, and I'll most likely build it around the players. Please say what kind of games you enjoy so I can have a good feel for the group.

Please post character sheets in the format presented here: http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=3169600&postcount=7

NEW: Characters will be level 2.

Stats should be bought with a 32 point buy (http://invisiblecastle.com/help.py?p=buy). Please do not choose languages yet.

Good gaming!
  -Raelifin

EDIT: Oh yeah, Natural 20 gets in automatically since he has never played before.

Rael, I posted a link in the previous thread to a character sheet template, you may wanna see if it will be useful for your game.  It can probably be edited to add and take out plenty of stuff if need be, but it covers the basics.

Same here. Mind telling me what this spiritcraft is? Or is it just spellcraft, only it's more towards the summoning of spirits instead of spells?

Oh yeah, will I be able to cast magic missile at the darkness in this campaign?

Looks interesting. I gotta head off to work now, but I'll check what this is all about and post again tonight.

Pssst! What is the starting gold for the Shaman? Plus, are we first level? So I'd start off with no hp but about 2-5 vp. (or somethin').

@ Crit: Cool
@ Wix1: Yes, it is a coppy of spellcraft.
@ Wix2: Nope, you get to use your Staff of Flames at the darkness here.
@ supa: Cool
@ Wix3: I haven't gotten around to doing equipment yet (one of the reasons I was hesitant to starting another game. My other one used premade characters.) so you can just present a list of equipment and I will say if you can't afford any of it. If you get less than you "could," I'll give you an equal amount of gpe to compensate.
@ Wix4: Yes. Sorry I didn't post that.
@ George: No, the numbat will need to stay indoors at all times.

Oh, and yes. If you start out at level 1, none of you should have any hero points to start.

There are a few feats that I could list. Variants of toughness, shield feats, racial feats, etc. Tell me if you want to see them. I'd like to hear character ideas so I can help with character creation.

Toughness! I'm so gonna need that one. Also, some sort Chitinous Shell feat for my pacifisitic bug character would be nice.

You planning on playing a nimunbella shaman? Sweet!
I'm also bumping the starting level to 2 so that more races are available.

EDIT: I'd also like to say that I can make a racial class progression for anyone who wants to play a race with more than 2 racial HD.

Oh yeah, the reason why I asked for the amount of gold to start off with (or for a 2nd level character) is how much I can spend on Binding spirits for my shaman. Yeah, I need to know how many I can have. Thx!

I'm interested: since the first Phaedoras campaign was such a smashing success and since I have WAY too much spare time on my hands, I would be more than happy to join your game.

Heroic [General]
You have the luck of legends in combat.
Benefit: You gain +3 hero points. At 6th level and every 5 levels after you gain an additional +3 hero points.
Special: This feat counts as having heroic ability and is not tied to a witchdoctor's shield charm.

Toughness [General]
You are tougher than normal.
Benefit: You gain +3 vitality points. Whenever you roll a natural 1 for hit points, the HD is re-rolled (this does not affect previous rolls.) Stabilization has a 25% chance instead of a 10% chance.
Thanks: Soel Griffin

You'll all get around 900gp each. How do you have both improved init and toughness? I updated the Shaman fluff on the witchdoctor thread, btw.

Any further questions?

Hmm...I'd like to use a Lunfriend Ihhaerah Wanderer, if that is acceptable. (I might not go with Lunfriends depending on what region we start in)

What part of Phaedoras are we starting in?

Do you have adapted armor for Ihhaerahs?

What are the feats for races like the Ihhaerah? Can they take Mounted feats like Centaurs?

That is fine.

The starting area will be decided once I figure out who is playing (although I see no reason you couldn't play a Lunfriend anyway.)

â,¬Â¢ Abnormal (Ex): Ihhaerah are shaped oddly. Armor, and clothing must be custom tailored to fit Ihhaerah anatomy in order to be worn. Also, Ihhaerah armor is larger and has the same cost as barding.
Other than that, I don't have anything, but we can work something out if you have somethin' in mind.

Ihhaerah are treated as mounted and are considered to have mounted combat and mounted archery for the purposes of other feats, items or abilites. Ihhaerah do not get an additional action (like they were mounted) or the ability to negate attacks with their ride skill.

Well, after reviewing the Ihhaerah and learning that they have racial levels which would prevent me from taking levels in Wanderer off the bat (and have to suffer a +1 LA), I have noticed an issue with the Wanderer base class: because the Wanderer  has class features involving starting languages, they can't be multiclassed with the full benefits.

My sheet is now pretty much dunna' (look up) and there is only two things i need to do.

-First off, how much does a 0-level binding cost? (I haven't figured in any of the costs for binding yet)
-Secondly, I have quite a bit of money left, could you think of a magic item that costs around 500 gpe i can use?
-And lastly, I have to do my background sometime once I read over whatever I have to read over to get started.

Uhg, I feel like crap. Sorry I haven't been able to crawl my vomiting hiney over to the computer in a few days, but this is just nasty. Anyone is welcome to make whatever character they want.

I'm still working out the wealth so I'll get back to you on gear. 0th level bindings are free although this might change soon. *barf* See ya later all.

Sounds good, I just need to know what happens to the Wanderer's bonus languages when you multi-class.

Since the Ihhaerah have racial HD and a LA (thus isn't really playable...), I'll do a nyamm instead. I could use the challenge.

See? If you didn't eat so many raw veggies this wouldn't happen...

Feats for Nyamm

Change of Focus [General]
You can rely on your ears instead of your eyes.
Prerequisite: Blind Fight, 4 ranks in listen
Benefit: If you cannot see for any reason for more than 1 round, you gain a +4 competence bonus to listen checks on the second round and each round thereafter until you become able to see again.
The listen DC to pinpoint invisible creatures also drops by 10 during this time.

Attuned Senses [General]
You can fight and move even when blind.
Prerequisite: Blind Fight, 4 ranks in listen
Benefit: Your speed is not hindered by blindness. You also automatically succeed when checking concealment miss chances in melee. This does not negate the presence of miss chance for the purposes of abilities that are negated by it (such as sneak attack) nor does it allow you to sense the presence of immobile objects (such as a statue).
Thanks: Nom

To See Without Eyes [General]
You can feel your surroundings as if you could see them.
Prerequisite: Blind Fight, Attuned Senses, 8 ranks in listen
Benefit: You gain blindsight 5â,¬,,¢. This ability allows you to sense immobile objects and terrain as well.

Nice, thanks for the feats! :)

Quick couple of questions:

1) What is the party's unifying language going to be?

2) What are the other languages?

3) How many language points do we get again?

4) What are the names for your renamed armors?

Oh, and for the purposes of RPing a better character and providing more role-playing options amongst the party I am going to change my character's class from Wanderer to Witchdoctor.
Title: (OOC Setup) Tales of Phaedoras
Post by: Raelifin on April 09, 2006, 07:17:32 PM
1. Not sure yet. I think I'll probably start out somewhere on Kimuk, but I'm not quite sure. Do languages last.

2. Here is a list there will probably be some synergy bonuses, but I haven't made any:
Ubin (Melseh Ubau)
Shaimoian (Echmorak)
Kainakai (Northern Tobinu)
Ieko (Iekokaii)
Shiienaii (Northern Kimuk)
Eemeechi (Eastern Lun)
Phseamodan (Shadowlands)
Vuunan (West Tobinu)
Minmikan (Southern Kimuk)
Mununutch (Kitchiek)
Hizzari (Northern Tobinu Desert)
Lunian (Lun)
Northern Lunian (Mid-north Kimuk)
Hokuch (Ihhaerah)
Totwimi (Kunoviera Twimi)
Morimikan (Fire Isles)
Pokobrian (Northwest Kimuk)

3. I have changed this. Each character starts with 2 automatic ranks in their regional language and recieves ONE bonus rank per int mod. Just be sure to tell me where your character grew up and I'll tell you what your auto language is and what your bonus languages are.
Language rules are here: http://users.bigpond.net.au/nom/d20/houserules/hr_skill.html

4. For thematic purposes, armors are named as weigh as folows:
Padded - 10lbs
Light Leather - 13lbs
Heavy Leather - 17lbs
Light Chainmail - 30lbs

Light Hides - 23lbs
Heavy Chainmail - 35lbs
Heavy Hides - 40lbs
Plate - 40lbs

Layered Chainmail - 50lbs
Bulky Plate - 60lbs
Epic Hides - 60lbs
Epic Plate - 70lbs

Shields are the same. If you want to use a tower shield, I have some nice feats for them.

You do realize that with those ranks set up as low as they are, our characters aren't going to even be able to speak the basic forms of communication in combat on a failed check, right?
Title: (OOC Setup) Tales of Phaedoras
Post by: Raelifin on April 09, 2006, 11:12:48 PM
I've already told you that if you have at least one rank in a language you may always take ten. Thanks for making me point it out to the others though.
Title: (OOC Setup) Tales of Phaedoras
Post by: Senkennomei on April 10, 2006, 01:08:51 AM
Oh, I thought you couldn't take ten when in combat...that's why I gave my other Phaedoras character 4 ranks in his native language, so he could still speak basic dialogue when in combat...
Title: (OOC Setup) Tales of Phaedoras
Post by: Raelifin on April 11, 2006, 11:54:00 PM
Sorry for not making myself clear. I'll give you a few extra ranks in Morimikan or Ubin or whatever to represent your linguistic prowess.

I know some of you have already made/thought up cool characters, but I'm not getting much of a response here. I was hesitant to start another online game and I still am. I know Crit is unsure if he actually wants to play in Phaedoras (no problems there) but if Wix wanted to take up the role of the character Pekartak in my other game, that would be quite neat.

I don't want to pressure you Wix, but you'd get to play now and there is a possibility that I'd be able to stick to DMing two games. Tell me what you think everyone. :)
Title: (OOC Setup) Tales of Phaedoras
Post by: Senkennomei on April 13, 2006, 03:29:10 PM
Well thus far I know I want to do a Nyamm Witchdoctor of Neutral or Evil personality (maybe a happy medium between the two), but I can't proceed with the character until I know what the new Witchdoctor holds + is capable of doing.

Oh, and Thomar is rather...enthusiastic about the idea of a 2nd Phaedoras. (I forgot he wasn't in CBG...)

Heck, I'd like to see Wix take over Pekartak...the last player sucked eggs RPing as him.

Having Wix as Pekartak would be great, but I'd still like to see this game get off the ground, too. I love the first Phaedoras, but I think it would be fun to start up a 2nd one on this different continent. Besides, I have a good character in mind + I could easily make him in half an hour once I get all the proper information :)

So since Crit is going to drop out, that leaves us with:

Senken - Witchdoctor
seTiny - Wanderer
Wixman - Shaman

If we could get a tank of some sort I think we'd be set :)

Right now I have no rules for stone vs. sebayet so all weapons are assumed to be starmetal.

I spent easter with my family, but the witchdoctor will probably be at a decent stage within a few days.

Another player, Grayman, may be joining. I'm not sure yet.

 Ã¢,¬Â¢ Medium Size.
 Ã¢,¬Â¢ Base speed 30ft.
 Ã¢,¬Â¢ Low light vision.
Ã¢,¬Â¢ +2 racial bonus on Move silently, Spot, Listen, Balance, Climb, and Jump.
 Ã¢,¬Â¢ 2 claws. 1d2 slashing damage, x2 crit.
Ã¢,¬Â¢ -1 penalty to attack and spot checks during the day or in an area of bright illumination (DM discretion). If the Nyamm is blind or closing their eyes this penalty does not apply.
Ã¢,¬Â¢ Nyamm gain blind fight as a bonus feat.
Ã¢,¬Â¢ If struck by a bright light in the face (searing light, prismatic spray, improvised attack with lamp, etc.) the Nyamm must make a will save DC 20 or become affected by Kyanarr. (see below) Nyamm can prevent this by having their eyes closed/blinded before the light affects them.
Ã¢,¬Â¢ If exposed to bright light or daylight over their body (a cloak will shield this) the Nyamm must make a fortitude save DC 20 each round or become affected by Kyanarr.
Ã¢,¬Â¢ Kyanarr (Su): When affected by Kyanarr, Nyamm undergo a hideous transformation. When first affected they are considered stunned for 1 round as their body convulses and their muscles expand. At the end of the round the Nyamm gains +8 str, +8 Con, -6 Int, -6 Wis, their claws grow to do 1d8 damage each and they gain a bite attack as a secondary natural attack that does 1d6 points of damage. During Kyanarr, they go into a mindless berserk causing them to attack the nearest creature (DM discretion) with as many attacks as possible. This rage lasts for a number of rounds equal to 4 + the Nyamm's constitution modifier. At the end of the rage the Nyamm falls unconscious for 1d20 hours. Nyamm can not remember any events between entering Kyanarr and waking up.

Totems:
Staff of the West Wind
Spirit: Fey (Air)
Activation Components: Somatic
Item Slot: Weapon
Activation Time: Standard Action
Range: 60 ft.
Effect: 5â,¬,,¢ wide line
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Fortitude Negates
Magic Resistance: Yes
Minimum Energy Points: 1

This staff appears to be made of three individual lengths of ebony wood, all of which are twisted around one another to create a five-foot masterwork quarterstaff. At one end the three coils meld together about a foot from the staffâ,¬,,¢s dull point, while on the other the three spirals bend apart and point straight ahead, forming three points, each approximately eight inches in length and three inches apart from one another.

When activated, a powerful wind erupts from the center of the staffâ,¬,,¢s three points, blowing away anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in the squallâ,¬,,¢s path. Any creature in the blast must make a Fortitude save or be blown away. Any stability bonuses are added to this save. Any gaseous effects such as smoke or fog are dispersed in the area effected. If any creature makes its save or resists the effects, the line ends.

Cloak of Rainâ,¬,,¢s Embrace
Spirit: Fey (Air)
Activation Components: Passive
Item Slot: Cloak
Activation Time: None
Range: Personal
Effect: Personal
Duration: Constant
Saving Throw: None
Magic Resistance: None
Minimum Energy Reserve: 1

This white cloak is extremely soft to the touch, but is surprisingly tough and difficult to tear. Its wide, deep cowl prevents sunlight from hitting the wearerâ,¬,,¢s face when raised, making this cloak a very comfortable yet protective garment.

Air akin to that from a fresh rain flows from the body of the cloakâ,¬,,¢s bearer, creating clean air in any space the witchdoctor occupies. This grants the wearer immunity to airborne poisons or other gaseous effects, as well as the ability to breathe in areas with no air circulation.  This does not allow the bearer to breathe underwater, although bubbles will float away from the witchdoctorâ,¬,,¢s body.

Guardian Talon
Spirit: Ancestor
Activation Components: Passive
Item Slot: Neck
Activation Time: None
Range: Personal
Effect: Personal
Duration: Constant
Saving Throw: None
Magic Resistance: None
Minimum Energy Reserve: None

This large, polished black talon appears to have originated from a large avian creature, most likely a Kiag. A simple black cloth chord has been threaded through a single hole at the base of the talon, allowing it to be worn as a necklace.

This charm creates an invisible barrier around the bearer, granting a number of hero points equal to (2.5 + the bearer's constitution modifier) * (the bearer's witchdoctor level - 1) round down (see table X for help).  If the charm is ever destroyed (disenchanting is fine), the drain on the witchdoctor's soul saps some of their life force and deals one point of permanent constitution drain unless they make a fortitude save DC 20. At any time, as a free action, the bearer may spend any number of energy points to heal hero points. Every 3 energy points spent heals 1 hero point. This allows the witchdoctor to subtract energy points if they get hit.

Fog Bracelets
Spirit: Fey (Air)
Activation Components: Verbal
Item Slot: Wrists
Activation Time: Standard Action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect: 15â,¬,,¢ Radius Cloud
Duration: 1 Minute
Saving Throw: None
Magic Resistance: No
Minimum Energy Points: 1

These bracelets resemble simple white lengths of cloth which are knotted around the bearerâ,¬,,¢s wrists, leaving approximately one foot of cloth trailing underneath each wrist.

When activated, the ends of the bracelets begin to blur into the air around them as they pour forth an impossibly thick, heavy fog. This fog prevents vision beyond 5 feet. and grants concealment to any creature 5 feet or farther away. Strong wind (21+ mph) disperses the fog in 4 rounds. A severe wind (31+ mph) disperses the fog in 1 round. Area of effect wind abilities do not effect the cloud. Any fire attack that effects an area dispels the fog in its effect. Area of effect wind abilities do not effect the cloud.

Augment: Each additional energy point spent increases the duration by one minute.

Frost Rings
Spirit: Fey (Air)
Activation Components: Somatic
Item Slot: Hands
Activation Time: Move Action
Range: 30 ft.
Effect: 5â,¬,,¢ wide line
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Magic Resistance: Yes
Minimum Energy Points: 1

This set of rings appears to be little more than smooth, featureless dark blue rings forged from sebayet. Totaling six in all, they are meant to be worn on an individualâ,¬,,¢s thumb, index, and ring fingers.

When activated, a blast of freezing wind shoots forth from the bearerâ,¬,,¢s outstretched palm, dealing 3 points of cold damage.

Augment: Every two additional energy points spent increases the damage dealt by 3.

Background
Kieru does not openly share his origins with those he is not familiar withâ,¬Â¦
Appearance
(http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d81/Banebringer/de9195d0.jpg)
The first and most noticeable trait in Kieruâ,¬,,¢s possession is his fur, which is a solid white in color. He is one of the few nyamms in the world to bear this recessive trait, which makes him extremely noticeable in a group. While of normal height, Kieru is thin, largely in part of his malnourished diet. Wearing a simple white vest and a pair of black pants, Kieru hides his slender frame beneath his white cloak, which continually provides him with the clean aroma of a fresh rainfall. In the presence of his mentor or during negotiations he tends to hunch slightly, both to look less intimidating and to avoid any aggressive confrontations.

Hiding his expressive violet eyes behind a white blindfold during the day, Kieruâ,¬,,¢s face can become extremely difficult to read in daylight, or whenever he is placed into an uncomfortable situation. His straight, white longhair is kept at a long length, though he usually keeps the majority of it swept behind his keen ears. Kieruâ,¬,,¢s voice, like that of a serpent crossed with an angel, is one which drips of cunning and intelligence. His voice seems to almost purr at lower tones, making him appear to be in a constant state of amusement whenever he is in a relaxed state of mind.
Personality
Kieruâ,¬,,¢s mind is sharp, and it is this which makes him most dangerous. Calm but cynical, he can be very useful to those who befriend him, but such a task is no easy feat. He is constantly wary of others, and he tends to react bitterly to awkward social situations or events which he cannot understand. His upbringing has left him cold and remorseless to those he does not know, but he does not harm those who have not wronged him.
Hey I had my entirely done. Except for the name and equipment, I even PMed you his background. I had asked the DM about the naming convention of the race I chose, and he said he would get back to me. Then he disappeared for a while, but now he is back. YAY!!!

That is the reason behind not posting the character as of yet, but now I am faced with another problem. I made the character using 3e, which unfortunately is down and I foolishly did not save the character fully on my home PC. Normally I do but my last two character builds have disappeared on me.

I was holding out for 3e to comeback, I didn't know when you and Senke were going to finish the witchdoctor. So I was putting off remaking him. I finished so long ago that I don't remember what skills I had, and I have to look through the history for those feats you IMed (the ones for flying creatures). I will work on it this weekend, but I still hope 3e comes back before I am done.

I had to leave work, so the post above this was unfinished. :)

If she makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, she instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if the trickster is wearing light armor or no armor and is not encumbered. A helpless character does not gain the benefit of evasion.
â,¬Â¢ Sixth Sense (Ex): The trickster gains an intuitive sense that alerts her to danger from traps, cave-ins and other dangers, giving her a +1 bonus on Reflex saves and a +1 dodge bonus to AC to avoid traps and other, unliving dangers.
This ability may be taken more than once, each time both bonuses increase by 1.

Even Shaili doesn't remember much of her origins, and is willing to disclose even less...

Shaili's appearance is average for a Nimunbella; however, her eyes show a pale red color in the normal silver, which combined with her normal insectile eyes and her tendency to stare at people, can make her rather unnerving indeed. Her wings show an iradescent green color, but they are usually scuffed and scratched, as Shaili doesn't take care of them very well.

Shaili is a greatly disturbed individual. Some have gone as far as to call her a tainted spirit. While she is a nice person at heart, her mind disceives her often and leaves her confused and scared with seemingly no cause. She isn't very wise or perceptive for a nimunbella, but she can think clearly even if she doesn't show it. She has a strong dislike for violence as do her kin, though as a result of frequent and forced exposure to it over years, it no longer strikes fear into her heart as it once did.

Hey, I'm sorry but I need a background before I can fit you into the story. If you don't want it to be public you can PM it to me.

Thanks,

Wow. Ready? I've been fairly absent in the world of PbP lately, but I'd love to see the character. I need to get the story back up and running, but it might take me a while yet. :)

I can't guarantee a spot, but I'll see what I can do.

I still can't immagine how you managed to do spellcasting/equipment without my help. >_>
