Title: [poll] Vreegin' Contests, How Do They Work?
Post by: Ninja D! on March 07, 2011, 10:51:42 PM
It looks like we haven't had any contests in a while. I know they were never huge but they always seemed to get some sort of response. Also, I think they are cool like bow ties. I know there has been some discussion with the CG but nothing has happened there yet.

At least once in the past, I had volunteered to head up a contest if no one else was going to. I'd still do that, if I can get some advice on what would make a good contest. What kind of theme, if there should be one at all? What sort of thing should the people entering be designing? What sort of reward should there be, assuming people want to compete for a reward?

I think such things are good for the community. Since I think this is about the best community for this sort of thing that exists, I think a contest deserves to be thought out and planned well before I just throw it out there. Any ideas or help would be great.

Polls have never worked.

I've always said if people want contests to just keep bugging me about it, but if other people want to make them as well, I'm cool with that.

Being lazy would just be easier.

I thought I remembered them not working but I hadn't seen one attempted in a while so I figured I'd give it a go. I guess there is actually a REASON it hasn't been attempted in a while.

Being lazy is the easiest. Sometimes I want to do something cool, though. I figured you'd given up on the contest thing. I'd be down for being part of a panel of judges or such, too. Or whatever works.

Maybe a dwarf-themed contest would be cool?

The end result of that is known in advance, I win. We can't do it anyways, we'd need to get together.

It's the diminutive of "lad" which means boy.

So you drink a lot, then?

Haha, nah I'm not an alcoholic, but I do have a good resistance which allows me to drink alot.

Anyways, what did you have in mind about a dwarf-related contest? I just thought this was the obvious, but you seem to have another idea.

I'm not really sure. Do you think enough people would be interested in such a contest? It seems a little narrow. I think something fairly open, like designing an interesting dwarf character would be a good one. By "character" I don't mean PC or NPC, just the all around character. Who they are, what they do, how they act, their history and goals, ect...

I think that there are a number of possibilities for contests regarding dwarfdom.  Some of them could make for really neat material.

If we wanted to keep to the theme of Dwarves and drinking from the other thread, we could go with Design a Dwarven Tavern, Design a Dwarven celebration that involves alcohol, Stat out a Dwarf character modeled on Vreeg . . .

New dwarven contest idea: Write a dwarven legend

it can be about any number of things but it must be a legend that dwarves would retell amongst themselves.

Nomadic could have a really good idea there. It's dwarf-centric but broad enough that just about anyone could want to participate. In addition to the legend itself, information could be included on how that impacts the culture or society of the dwarves that keep the legend. That could be as simple as a moral to the story, a reason why a certain family / clan is respected / feared / in power, or modern festivals and celebrations. Or not, this is more or less brainstorming now.

I'm not set on keeping the theme of drinking, personally. That is the third On Dwarves... thread I have done and I intend to do more. Religion was a previous topic. However, my above expansion on Nomadic's idea could tie into reasons for drinking, religion, or both. (Really, Nomadic's idea on its own could probably also do that; I take no credit.)

I would enjoy this premise.

It sounds like we have a good idea for the contest now. What about a reward? Is it enough to do it just for bragging rights? What about a badge to put in one's sig? A book mailed to the winner? Gifting a PDF book to an e-mail address would also be nice but I don't see a site that allows that.

Yes, that sounds like an awesome contest idea.

As for reward; I don't think we need much.  A sig badge would be good enough for me, but I wouldn't object to a book or some such.

I'll let the winner pick the next group of titles for members in the forums (the ones that are currently discworld themed "great a'tuin, susan sto helit, cohen the barbarian, etc"). Been a few months since they were last changed, could use an update. The only requirements is that I need 10 different ranks and they all need to follow some sort of theme.

You mean the winner gets to engage in unfettered logolepsy? To arms, gentlefolk!

Sounds like we have a plan, then. I will try to get this written up over the weekend. Nomadic, I'll be in touch so I can make this all official-like.
