Title: Good "car" systems?
Post by: LoA on March 16, 2011, 06:19:47 PM
Hey guys!

For those of you who don't know, i'm making a dieselpunk fantasy setting named Dynama (link in SIG), and i'm going to spend some time devoted to the crunch of the setting while i work out some of the fluff.

I have come to the conclusion that i want there to involve alot of car, and airplane action. I want there to be some mechs, but i don't think i want it to be too prominent.

My question to you guys is what are good, and simple systems for running cars and airplanes and stuff for 3e and pathfinder? I'm not really focused on mechs right now though.

Weave showed me a pretty cool system, but i'm not really sure how to apply it to my game...

Thanks in advance!

Did Weave show you the Spirit of the Century system? Because if he didn't, I will.

Yes, he did. if anybody can help me make it work for pathfinder, my eternal gratitudes to you.

I'm sorry; I'm not fluent in Pathfinder.

Luckily, I happen to be!

If SotC didn't sell you, then I think Pathfinder could work. Chases aren't something that have ever really fit nicely into the system, which has always left me grinding my teeth. Fortunately, they recently released a product which contained some pretty solid chase rules that, in my opinion, actually translate better into vehicle-based rules, which you can find here (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/chases).

I've used them before for regular foot races, but haven't gotten around to anything with vehicles. It should still work fine. Tell me what you think!

EDIT: Also, if you're still interested in SotC / aren't satisfied with the PF chase system for whatever reason, you should really ask LC for a rundown of the SotC system; as a newbie to the FATE system myself, I'd hate to have done a poor job of explaining anything and LC happens to be my go-to guy with those kinds of things. If you're at all interested, I would highly suggest hearing his rundown of it all, be it via this thread, messaging, or whatever.

I've heard good things about Car Wars, if you were willing to meld systems. Otherwise, though you're "not focused on mecha" I would take a look at the Mecha Wars (I think that's what it was called) minigame from Polyhedron. I think a modified version of the same system may have been in D20 Future. You could use about the same system but change the mecha parts to car parts. Layout the body a little differently and that should work well enough...it actually sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Good luck.

Did you ever come up with anything for this?

In light of our more recent discussions, it's amusing to look back upon this thread.
