Also, hooray for bastardized Frapanese.
So, yeah. Favorite anime series, movies, manga. Discuss.
ARGH! Couldn't rent Akira! It was already checked out!
TETSUO!!!!!1!!1
KANEDAAA!!!!1!!!11!!!11
Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Vampire Hunter D, Records of Lodoss War, Nausicaa (the original movie and the manga), Mononoke... think that covers it.
kino's journey good surreal drama. i love surreal when it's done good. not so much when done bad.
Haibane-Renmei ditto.
voices of a distant star cell phones as a plot device! and time dilation!
cromartie high school heeeee.
ghost in the shell SAC it's got sci fi stuff, fairly tie-together plot. female protagonist is oddly clothed. (i have problems taking a female protagonist seriously if she's also fan service. :))
vamp hunter d cool-like-the-matrix protagonists.
mononoke believable antagonists. (no twirly mustache)
big o batman with a mecha, property damage. (bad trippy ending)
cowboy beebop i would like it better if i hadn't watched it 300-11 times.
slayers this series has nothing to recommend it, really, but i still enjoyed it a lot. possibly because there was nothing horribly wrong as only the japanese could do wrong in it?
Twelve kingdoms kinda like slayers. pulpy fantasy, nothing great about it, but no horrible horrible japanovice
read or die (TV) the midpoint battle is incredible. The protaganist is actually scared. it sucked after that. (bad trippy ending)
Armitage III I love the battle in this. not so good otherwise. hasn't aged well with me.
things i liked when i watched but probably couldn't stand now:
tenchi
love hina
trigun
inuyasha
evangelion the robots could like, actually move their legs. awesome in the day. (bad trippy ending)
last exile pretty, but it pissed me off at the end. (bad trippy ending)
I'm getting less and less tolerant of anime as time goes by. which is a shame. but so much of it is bad. and in exactly the same way as the last anime was bad. If the badness varied i could take it more.
Coboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Ninja Scroll, Evangelion (except the very last episode - it felt tacked on), Perfect Blue, anything by Miyazai (although Howl's Moving Castle seemed a little below his usual standard).
And Akira stands as my all time favourite. The bit where he crushes his girlfriend gave me nightmares back when I was eight.
Yeah... the Eva TV series had the bad ending. I have to say that there were parts of the movies that were fucking awesome though. In ways the TV series just never did (budget?)... Those horrible whale-headed things? Fucking perfect. Giant robots + disembowelment and cannibalism? Win.
My big problem with Eva is that the emotional aspect lacks subtlety. NO ONE SITS IN A CORNER (or on some hypothetical stage) AND TALKS TO THEMSELVES FOR HALF A FUCKING HOUR!!! Expression through action. Like Asuka. And Gendo.
And GITS:SAC is made of so much win. Bebop and Champloo are also pretty sweet. I haven't got through all of Big O just yet, but I enjoyed what I've seen so far and intend to follow up.
Inuyasha? Eeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwww... That's just...
As for Akira, I half-saw it... the subtitles were fucking invisible on the screen we had, but anime club always insisted on the original Japanese... so I saw some things explode... and there was some screaming... but I have no idea what happened. Not to mention that I was distracted by this one girl...
Haha. That's a shame, 'cos Akira, for all its craziness, really doesn't work without the plot.
In no particular order, I like:
Akria - No particular comment, I just like it.
Elfen Lied - When over 50 people are killed in various gruesome manners in the first 15 minutes of the first episode by a naked woman, it has to be good.
Excel Saga - Manga moreso than the anime; its almost as crazy as I, so I think its great.
Great Teacher Onizuka - I would teach if the job was this cool.
Kashimashi ~Girl Meets Girl~ - Still only a fansub; an effeminate, but not gay, guy gets turned into a girl. Chaos ensues (hot nublie lesbian chaos...)
Ouran High Host Club - Alas, if only I had such a club at my high shcool... (damnéd single-gender high schools.)
R.O.D. the TV - Using paper as a weapon is the best idea ever.
Wow... I just realized I don't really watch that much... I used to be up on all the shows; I downloaded them and watched them for hours a night, but I don't recognize half of the names you guys have thrown out.
And by the way, I never liked Akira at all. I know I'll be barbequed for that, but for some reason, I always found it extremely boring, with way too much of the DragonballZ-esque standing around and looking mean without actually doing anything.
Anyone seen Memories? That little three part movie with Magnetic Rose, Stinkbomb, and that other thing (that other thing wasn't really worth remembering, besides an awesome art style).
Yeah man. I only remember stinkbomb, which was weird. I remember Magnetic Rose as being cool but can't recall any details.
Cannon Fodder i don't remember at all.
Read or Die was kinda cool.
Akira (Manga and Movie which is rare for me)
Ragnarok is fun
Nausicaa (Manga and Movie)
Princess Mononoke
Vampire Hunter D (Bloodlust, didn't really like the original all that much.)
Naruto! Yeah! (Manga, not anything else)
Cowboy Beebop (Movie and Show, not the Manga so much.)
Elfen Lied (No excuse is too flimsy for blood and nudity)
GTO (Manga, didn't like the Anime immensely)
Psychic Academy (I have no idea why I liked this so much. I guess It's kind the ultimate manga cliche without intending to be.)
Out of curiosity... has anyone noticed that in the Eva movies, the JSSDF tanks all have the Hitler Youth logo painted on???
Is it just me or is that really friggin' WRONG!
Quote from: limetomElfen Lied - When over 50 people are killed in various gruesome manners in the first 15 minutes of the first episode by a naked woman, it has to be good.
I've never been really into anime. One reason must be that this was the first anime I ever watched, at 3 AM, after being awake for 36 hours. I was a bit dazy, and whenever I opened my eyes I saw random blood. A very weird experience. I fled to my bed before those first fifteen minutes were over... Ah, the good old days.
