Title: The Twin Moons, Age of Industry
Post by: Wensleydale on October 15, 2006, 05:30:21 PM
Before anyone moans at me, I'm NOT abandoning Kahtar - I'm just going to be doing this as well (although Kahtar will always be my main setting).

Two planets, spinning around a single star. Hamayeht and Atafah, the Twin Planets - alike, and yet so far apart. On one, psionics has shaped the world subtly, and the race called 'daemons' by some are dominant. Their genetically-engineered slaves, 'humans', do their work, and the daemon empire is decadent. On Atafah, on the other hand, magic is king, and elves are the rulers. They have eradicated all other races, wiping them from the face of the earth, and now only a few orc ruins or dwarf artefacts remain. Between the two, the Crystalline Bridge connects, a sign of the mastery of modern technology and power.
It is an age of industry. Great chimneys belch smoke into the sky, waterwheels power mills spinning out a thousand threads of cotton. Steam powers enormous factories, pushes vehicles across the land at never-before-thought-of speeds, and allows mages to make items never seen before. Trade between the two moons is everyday, and human slaves are sold in their hundreds by the daemons in exchange for elven cotton and weaponry. It is a new age...

You have two contradictions:
You start of mentioning that they are planets, then switch to them being moons.  (In fact, I don't think something can be a moon without a planet to orbit around.)
In the first paragraph you say Atafah is ruled by dwarves, but then you switch to elves.

Yes, you're right.

I call them moons/planets interchangeably... it's probably not correct, but never mind.

Also, it was supposed to be elves...

I really like the basic idea, but, of course, more details are needed.  If there is an additional thread with more info, perhaps you could poit me there.  I'm curious to know what the daemons are like.  Are they like Yugoloths, like Demons, or is the name daemon coincidental?  How do the classes work?  You are redoing both magic and psionics, it seems, so what is the new system?  Are rangers and paladins cut out as well?  Or are you using non-magic variants?  What are the conflicts of the two moons?  With each other?  Are there conflicts within either moon individually?  etc.

Answer if you find the time.  I expect you'll be busy with Kahtar.  It having won showcase and all.

:) always time for answers.

Daemons are not normal demons, or outsiders - they're a highly adaptable, slightly magical race that can take nearly any form. Of course, this includes huge wings, horns, glowing eyes etc, but that's not JUST what they can have.

Classes are being redone. For a start, magic and psionics are going to be up to level 5 only, although magic items exist which can boost them and grant more power. Both mages and psions are going to be extremely focused, with access to one or two disciplines. Paladins I hate with a venom and find illogical, so I'm replacing them, and using a nonmagical ranger variant. At the moment, the moons are at peace... for now. And indeed, within the moons there are conflicts - a combination of magic and industry have allowed large empires to spring up, but this doesn't mean there aren't still wars and rebellions and even huge unconquered areas on each planet.

It sounds vaguely Eberronish to me... are there high amounts of low magic, then?

Also, with magic and Psionics, you said that magic items will boost magical power. How will this work?

High amounts of low magic - the focus is on industrial power rather than magical power.

What I meant was, these items can boost the levels of spells you're able to cast - allowing you to achieve much more powerful effects.
