Title: Help with World(s?)
Post by: Xathan on March 20, 2006, 01:24:18 PM
I'm stuck on Datrik. Same place I always get stuck when I make a new setting, and the same thing that always happens. The problem is, I have too many ideas for one setting, and I'm not sure where to go with them. For Datrik, I don't know what system of magic to use, how high the technology level should be, what races to include - and then I had an entirely new idea for a horror themed setting that would fit some of the new ToM stuff much better than my world.

So I guess the questions I have for you guys are:
A) Should I just stick with Datrik, and just ignore my other ideas? (A hard choice, as my ideas tend to dislike being ignored, and I get easily distracted and frusterated when there is an idea I'm ignoring)
B) Try to fit evertyhing into Datrik so I can have all of my ideas? (I could make it work, but I'm afraid of loosing some of Datrik's flavor in the shuffle)
C) have the other setting(s) work on the side, or on the WOTC boards, and just have Datrik here? (a meh option, but the feedback here is of a much higher quality than on the WOTC boards)
D) Make my other setting(s) here, along with Datrik. (I don't know if anyone would be bothered by me haveing multiple settings. I know I tend to work better the more projects I have, but I don't want to break some unwritten (or even written) rule
E) Close down Datrik for now, and go with the other setting? (I could do it, but this would eventually cause the same problem as A.)

Thanks in advance for your help. I know this should be my decision, but it would be nice to know what you all would do in my place, or even what you think I should do - hearing the ideas and thoughts of other people always helps me get my ideas together.

A. Why stick with just one.  My Nordica CS came out of the fact I could not fit the rune mechanic I wanted into my Altvogge CS.
B.  Keep what fits, and keep working on what doesn't for the other settings.
C.  Work on all of them here.
D.  Have as many sttings here as you like.  The more the merrier.
E.  Each day, work on whichever CS(or CSs) is trying the hardest to get out of your brain and onto paper.
F.  Under no circumstances push the red button.

Thanks for the reply, Cymro. My main concern, really, is that there was some unspoken taboo against putting up a second setting when you have hardly anything down on the first. That being said, depending on other feedback, I might have a brand new CS up in the next couple of days, depending on what flows out of my brain.

But I have one problem...the button...it's so big...and red...and candy like! "Push me!" it calls to me in my sleep. The huge "DO NOT PUSH, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES (not even then)" sign draws me like a moth to the flame. Closer I draw...I must push...PUSH!!!

D. Definitely. I have three worlds, possibly four soon. Sometimes it help just to say to youself, "that idea can work and I will use it, but not here."

Jot your ideas down, but only put them where they fit. If you have a good idea, but Datrik isn't a good place for it, it's not a big problem. I'm sure you'll find a place where it does eventually.

QuoteB) Try to fit evertyhing into Datrik so I can have all of my ideas? (I could make it work, but I'm afraid of loosing some of Datrik's flavor in the shuffle)
Forcing things in will probably ruin Datrik

QuoteC) have the other setting(s) work on the side, or on the WOTC boards, and just have Datrik here? (a meh option, but the feedback here is of a much higher quality than on the WOTC boards)
If you want to make another setting, then by all means go for it. Alternately you could just put unused ideas asside for later, and use them when you happen to have a good place to impliment them.

QuoteD) Make my other setting(s) here, along with Datrik. (I don't know if anyone would be bothered by me haveing multiple settings. I know I tend to work better the more projects I have, but I don't want to break some unwritten (or even written) rule
There's nor rule spoken or unsoken, that you cannot work on more than one setting.

QuoteE) Close down Datrik for now, and go with the other setting? (I could do it, but this would eventually cause the same problem as A.)
Nah don't close down your primary setting. You can put it on hold to work on other things, and come back to it as things pop into your head.

I have only ones setting as of now, but as I get more ideas, I write them down for my other settings that will undoubtedly begin once I am finished with Godswalk.  Right now, beyond Godswalk, I have at least 3 settings planned.

And, there is no rule I know of against multiple settings, and I've been here since the beginning of both forums, though not the WoTC thread.

No unspoken taboos here!
I have two glorious settings posted, and maybe two more coming.... :jive:

YOU MUST RESIST THE BUTTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I remember Datrik correctly, is that not the subterranean world where something similar to the internet exists?  If that's the case, I've got one word for you: Digimon.

No, seriously.  Think of the premise of Digimon: our world exists alongside a digital world that has its own physical laws and its own level of technology.  Why not continue Datrik as is, but also have a virtual world that the people of Datrik can access?  One where some of your ideas that don't make sense for the rest of Datrik can be implemented?  For example, maybe your horror setting is actually a virus in the virtual world that infects visitors and causes them to live in a terrifying, computer-generated mockery of the real Datrik even after they (incorrectly) think that they've logged out of the virtual world.
