Title: Heart of the Desert (IH) [IC]
Post by: limetom on November 11, 2006, 03:58:15 PM
[ic]As you climb over a particularly large dune, a massive, half-ruined temple complex stands before you, many times larger than you were led to believe in the description given to you by the local governor.  It streches out so far that the hot desert air distorts your vision as to the true extent of it's size.  If anyone is hiding in there, it could literally take days, if not weeks, to find them.  The path the map led you on has taken you to what seems to be the main entrance to the complex.  An entrance way streches on before you, lined on each side with massive pillars, some of which have fallen onto the pathway.  In total, it stretches on for about 50 meters (~160 feet).

No one appears to be partoling the outside; indeed, the complex is far to massive for anything less that a near-army to keep adequately guarded.  However, you cannot be sure that no one isn't watching you, for the complex allows for even a single person to have a good vantage point of it's entire surroundings.

Dust blows across the pathway in front of you, as a hot, dry wind blows, as if marking your entry into this place.[/ic]
[spoiler=OOC]Hint: Keep in mind this question, "What's around me?".  It is very important in IH, because IH allows you to do things with terrain that D&D doesn't.

Assume for the time being that you have more than enough food and water.  It may come up at a later time of my choosing, but for now, you're good.[/spoiler]

[ic=Rashine] Hoie! Didn't expect somethin' so big out here. We'd best get on with this, if we expect to find those bandits.[/ic]

[ic=Faridoon]"We are truly unequiped to deal with this, but if fate has drawn me here I cannot turn back. Let us get out of the sun."

Faridoon leads his mule down the pathway.
Though you test my strength as I follow the truth I will not falter, I will not fall, for you are my strength, my will and my life.[/ic]
[ooc][spoiler=Character Sheet]Faridoon, Blade of Ormazd
Weapon Master 1

[spoiler=Description]Language: Faridoon speaks farsi (persian) and is able to read some thanks to his upbringing in a temple.

Religion: Faridoon is dedicated to the ideas of Zurvanism. Conflict between Fatalism and traditional Zoroastrianism becomes evident if involved in religious debate.

Backstory: Faridoon was born and raised in the temple. His mother, too poor to support a child left him as a babe to the priests of the flame. The wisdom of Zurvan and the truth of asha were Faridoon's first words and it is said he learned to pray before he learned to walk. Performing rites and chores for the clergy, Faridoon was given a small place of living outside the temple.

Four days after his tenth birthday the bandits came. A group of rogues from the west, no doubt Christian, found the temple and pillaged it. The bandits did not speak the language of men and the high-priest could not stand by as such druj was done in this holy place. He was slain by a wicked roman with gold teeth. In his youth, Faridoon hid as shouting filled the air. When he emerged, the house of flame was desecrated. Lost and confused, Faridoon noticed an overturned brazier. In the coals was a colossal sword, red with heat. Down the road traveled the boy, dragging the sword of flame. Where he went was unknown, but an inner fire rose in him that day that could not be extinguished. As he met travelers, he would say "The will of Zurvan is my guide, the will of Ormazd is my cause and the will of Ahriman is my foe. My path is chosen by fate alone and it is with fate that I place my life." To many, the success of the boy was a miracle. Fortune seemed to smile on Faridoon for a time as he walked the land without purpose.

As he traveled, Faridoon took up the blade of flame. To him, it was a symbol of life and hope. Though he began as a small child, the temple boy soon grew into a young man, strong and sturdy beyond compare. It was this that became Faridoon's failure. At the age of 16, a man named Baraz found Faridoon and proposed a great plan. Baraz wanted to build a temple so large that it outshined the greatest Christian churches. Fairadoon agreed to help, seeing it as the calling of Zurvan and a gift to Ormazd. However, it was not brick-laying that Baraz had in mind for the stocky youth. Faridoon was taught how to wield his sword by friends of Baraz. It was "because of the violence of unbelievers" that Faridoon was to become a guard for the church. Having seen first-hand the hideous nature of men, Faridoon focused on learning the way of combat. Soon, he came with Baraz on "fund raising" missions that involved dealing with traders who were "confused by roman ideas". One day, Faridoon found Baraz with a whore and it became clear to him that Baraz was nothing more than a thief who preyed upon his past for loyalty. In his rage, Faridoon killed him and the prostitute with the holy blade of Ormazd. A pledge was made over their corpses that "As I walk this world I will see druj. The taint of Ahriman must be cleansed from the land. It is the sacred will of Ormazd that I do so, for it is my destiny."

For the next eight years, Faridoon knew hardship. Seeing his luck change was the ultimate proof in his eyes that the druj that he was part of had displeased Zurvan and that he must repent and follow only the life of purity and truth by cleansing the world of those who defy Ormazd. Selling himself as a hired blade, Faridoon made end's meat by culling the wicked in dens of evil. In some cities, the now-hulking zealot was hunted by authorities bent on stopping his crusade or by criminals seeking vengeance. It is for this reason that Faridoon accepted the current task. Faridoon sees it as a chance to be rid of the danger while performing an act of truth for Ormazd.

Personality: Faridoon is a zealot. To protect the pure and cull the evil is his divine destiny and it is by this fate that he lives. Faridoon will not lie, nor will he partake in any act of druj. However, seeing as it is his divine fate, Faridoon will kill, and quite often too if given the opportunity. To him, death is judgment for those who have lived the liar's path and he has no qualms about killing those he deems evil. Faridoon is a practical man, beliving in a simple lifestyle guided by fate. Faridoon has no mercy and does not hold to the bounds of law, Zurvan's will lives beyond the wills of men. In fate is the divine purpose of Zurvan and to stray from it would be druj. To enemies, Faridoon is a monster who kills without hesitation, to allies, Faridoon is a stone, unmovable by anything but his devotion to the gods.

Looks: Built like a bear, Faridoon stands a hulking 6'3" and weighs 325 pounds. Thick muscles from exhausting daily workouts hide the natural grace and agility he shows in combat. Wearing thin, practical garb underneath his armor, Faridoon is able to hold his gigantic "sword of flame" in one hand while his left holds a heavy shield engraved with a sun. Faridoon's face is strong and blockish, with a shaved, heavy jaw and a handsome visage. Faridoon's thick hair is constantly hidden by his turban, which he wears often.[/spoiler]

[ic=Faridoon]Listening to Behrem and Rashine, Faridoon turns and argues "If these bandits are guarding every entrance to this place day and night, we deserve to meet them. There must be a dozen entrances to the temple, why should we cower in fear when they surely do not have enough men to hold a decent guard?"[/ic]

Your current position is the best location you are going to get for hiding and scouting.  You have a clear view of almost the entire complex.[/ooc]

[ic=Behrem]I, for one, would as soon not face the power of Ahriman head on. But if they've spotted us already, there's no value in waiting and letting them prepare an even more fearsome ambush.

I'll aid in whatever way is possible.[/ic]

[spoiler=Character Sheet]
Behrem, desert guide
Hunter 1
Zoroastrian (vaguely)
[spoiler=Description]His father was a desert guide and caravan guard. His mother, a serving woman at a wayside inn along a major trade route. As soon as he was old enough, he took a job working the animals on the caravans his father was guarding. By this means, he was able to learn many of the skills needed for any traveler in the wastes. Now that heâ,¬,,¢s eighteen, heâ,¬,,¢s decided it is time to move out from under his fatherâ,¬,,¢s shadow and take the "family profession" for himself.

Heâ,¬,,¢s rather rough around the edges, and distinctly common in his appearance. A little superstitious and a little skeptical, in the way of those who have to earn their living the hard way. His one vice is chewing qat, a leaf that when chewed provides a stimulant effect. This drug is imported from far lands, so it is expensive and he is often without.

Normally dressed in the desert traveler's robe, he carries under the robe a crude falchion and a pair of throwing knives. When danger looms, he will outfit himself in a simple set of leather armor.

[ic=Rashine] I feel that Behrem's earlier suggestion is most sound. We'll waste more time looking if we rush headlong in, and may make ourselves vulnerable to attack. Alternately, might we find a tower or minaret within the complex? Such would be an ideal place to spend the night, such that we may watch in shifts for smoke and torchlight.[/ic]

Everyone make a Spot check.  This will go for all rolls from now on, but if someone hasn't rolled within 24 hours of me announcing it, I'll roll for them.[/ooc]

[ooc]Character Sheet:[spoiler=Character Sheet]Atefeh, noble in rags
Harrier 1
[spoiler=Description]Atefeh is a permanent traveler, and a man without a home.  Possessed of a nervous temperament, and skittish in all but the most secure of environments, he always seems to be on the run.  Tall and slight of fram, Atefeh appears too skinny, as if he is wasting away from fear.  His eyes are heavy, as though he bears a great secret.

[spoiler=Secrets...]Atefeh is the bastard chile of Yazdegerd I, legacy of one of his all too common escapades of lust.  Since his father's passing, he has been hunted throughout the empire due to his blood-claim to the throne.   He grew up in the slums of various cities across the empire, making friends and enemies, usually forced to flee for his own safety as his hunter scaught up to him.  Although he has no intention of claiming the throne, the constant stress of being hunted has hardened the young man, who has taken to learning some martial dscipline in an effort to discourage his pursuers.  He has just now eluded the agents of the current emperor long enough for a rest, and so he seeks to earn a little gold by lending his sword to a fair cause, and perhaps make a few more friends behind which he may hide when the time comes.[/spoiler][/spoiler]

[ooc]Like most Middle Eastern buildings, the one you are currently standing in is open air.  The center of the building opens up into a courtyard, in which rubble and some hardy plants are strewn about.  Around the perimeter of the courtyard there are evenly spaced coulumns, around 2 feet thick each.  The entire interior is a square with 60 foot sides.  The courtyard is a square with 40 foot sides.

The small Eastern man in orange robes is sitting in the middle of the courtyard; he appears asleep or at least not paying any attention to you all.[/ooc]

[ooc]@Crit: No checks are needed.[/ooc]

[ooc]@beejazz: Nothing "ridonculous" stands in your way.[/ooc]

[ic=The Easterner]The man slowly exhaled, and opened his eyes.  With a smile, he spoke to Rashine, "It has been said, 'If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him.'  I think I understand now."

The small man looks down at Rashine's weapons, looks back up at him, and simles, as he says, "Would you kill a simple monk?  I don't see what you'd gain.  I walked all the way from Tibet to China and now to this place, without any gain.  I'm simply resting.  I have no quarel with you."  The man reached into his small bag next to him and pulled out what looked like some kind of dumpling, "Would you like a momo?"[/ic]

[ic=Behrem]Behrem relaxes a bit, seeing no threat from such a clownishly-dressed man. Though he speaks in strange riddles, which is slightly worrying.

He steps out into the courtyard, scanning the shadows with hawkish glances. Assuming he sees nothing unusual, he'll unstring his bow and put it away. Then he stands attentively, shifting restlessly a bit from side to side as he chews his qat leaves.

"Speak plainly, man. What kind of place is this?"[/ic]

The monk digs around in his bag again, "If you don't want a momo," he says as he pulls out a small bag, "I have some rice."[/ic]

[ooc]Behrem has heard of Tibet, he knows that it is far to the East, past Persia and even India, located at the foot of a great mountain range.

[ic=The Monk]The monk hands a bowlful of rice to Behrem.  It is uncooked.  Obviously, the monk has no means to cook it at present.

"I'm not sure, they could be brigands to someone, perhaps.  I just saw no reason to label them as such. " The monk looks up an scratches under his chin, "Then again, I never label anyone as such."

"As to their buisiness, they said something about people around here have something against their beliefs or some such.  I wasn't exactly sure what they were talking about, but they were friendly, so I didn't take much notice of such things."

"And my business?  I think I already said it, but I am just a traveller.  I stopped here to stay the night."

[ooc]You are tasked with clearing out a group of bandits from temple ruins located as indicated on the map provided to you.  The governor didn't know the specifics of the crime, or the criminals for that matter, just that they are quite dangerous and now fell under his jurisdiction.  He said that you were free to kill them, but he would need proof in order for you to receive payment.[/ooc]

[ic=The Monk]The monk spoke up, "There were no women, just one girl, almost to the age of an adult.  They numbered at least twice as many of all of us gathered here."

"I was considering showing you were they were," says the monk, "But since you have some obvious hostile intent towards them, I am obliged to withhold that information."

[ooc]A few things:

I thought you guys were going to try and track them down first.  The monk gave general directions, not really anything specific.

Also, are you really going to walk across the entire complex?  I don't know if I made this very clear, but it's at least a days travel from one end to the other.

Just some things to think about.[/ooc]
Title: Heart of the Desert (IH) [IC]
Post by: beejazz on November 15, 2006, 11:34:52 PM
[ooc]Let's just leave the stinkin' monk alone! That aside, where are we going. There's a tower ahead. There's the people on the other side of the complex. We might snipe from the tower or ride on our horses/camels/mules to the other side. In fact, I don't recall the briefing. Are we looking for the soon-to-be-martyrs on the other side? Or are there actual thieves to attend to? Latter couple questions aimed at limey, we gotta think about the rest.[/ooc]
Title: Heart of the Desert (IH) [IC]
Post by: limetom on November 16, 2006, 12:37:28 AM
[ooc]As the monk pointed out, there is only one group in the complex, and what they are called is subjective.  He didn't call them bandits, but others might.

Furthermore, I said "bandits", never anything about them being "theives".[/ooc]
Title: Heart of the Desert (IH) [IC]
Post by: beejazz on November 16, 2006, 12:46:01 AM
[ooc]For the record, "bandit" is usually a term used for mugging, thieving, pillaging, and (in rare cases) rape. Religious persecution might be better labelled "heresy" or somesuch. Not that I've any problem with maiming Christians, or whatever else. And about the feasibility of sniping from the tower? At least in terms of height, anyway. As to the "one person gets shot and they scatter" thing, I'm working on that.[/ooc]

[ooc]All you know is that this group, who the monk more than likely met, is your bounty.  You know nothing of what they did, just that you are tracked with bringing them back, dead or alive.

[ic Faridoon]Responding to Rahine's question, Faridoon stops donning his boiled leather breastplate and says in a monotone voice "I agree that we need to get to the other side of the complex, but doing so in broad daylight would no doubt alert them. The tower(s) are perfect camping places, as you know, and if these outlaws have any sense, that's where they'll be. Behrem and the coward might be able to make it undetected, but it's still a heavy risk. Better to wait until night to cross the open sands. We'll be invisible as long as we carry no light and we'll be able to make it before dawn."[/ic]

I suggest you only track the monk for a short time, he's unlikely to pull any tricks. If he is going to warn them, you must stop him at all costs, otherwise you can return to us here early."

The hulking man takes one of his many camel bladders from the side of his mule and removes the wax seal.

"We need your skill, Behrem, so if we choose to wait until dark, I give you my oath that we will not leave until you return."

Turning yo Hyaled, Faridoon stares at the clergy and states "Priest, I did not insult you. I simply suggest that if you are afraid of the dark, you had best stay behind."

[ic=Rashine] So we're staying here and not going to the tower? Are you seriously that scared? I say the lot of us go to the tower. Behrem should follow the monk. I can spy on our foes. [ooc]A question for the DM: We are in a large temple complex. How is it built? Is it something on the order of a town, with various buildings and roads or paths? The complex is built like a huge keep, with courtyards and walkways separating each of the mostly open-air buildings.  The complex is not walled.

Anyway, if you plan to travel all the way to where the monk said, you will not have a specific idea of where you want to go.  Also, you will essentially be walking in to where you are going blind, with no idea of the number of the enemy, nor their efficacy as a fighting force.  There is a chance that you will get lost.[/ooc]

[ic=Behrem]As we move toward the tower, Behrem will drop back within sight distance of those following from time to time. We'll try to keep the tower in sight as we navigate between the buildings. I think we should scout up to where we can observe the base of the tower (or the building it is attached to), then fall back to regroup before the rest of the group comes up to that point.

Based on what we see at that point, we can decide how to proceed from there.[/ic]

[ooc]Just to keep things moving...

Not sure we want to leave the tower behind us without knowing if it might serve as a high point for the criminals to spot us. Doesn't mean we have to engage it, but it would be nice to know.[/ooc]

[ic]Once we get across, we need to scout the interior of the building, to get an idea of what kind of building it is. Open plan, with lots of courtyards and such, or more closed in?

We don't want to get too far ahead of the rest of the group. Focus on scouting ahead, determining if there is anything to worry about the tower. Return periodically to report if we spot anything interesting.[/ic]

[ic=Behrem]
Since nothing seems to have happened since we moved across, Behrem is going to enter the building we've reached. He's particularly looking for any open courtyards or areas in the interior where we'd get some degree of light.
[/ic]

[ooc]I've lost track of the time again. Is it still sunset? Moving through the interior of a building at night will be very tough unless there are plenty of courtyards here. If not, we may have to move around the perimeter of the building anyway, tower or no.[/ooc]

[ic=DM]The building streches out for some distance.  The main walkway through the building is open-air, and it seems it will allow starlight and moonlight in once the moon fully sets.  There are two floors, and the second floor walkway is a series of balconies above the first.  You see no immediate access to the second floor, meaning that the stairwell is probably off in some side area.

Every so often there are doorways off to other rooms that line the side of the building.  Most of the doors are either broken or falling off their hinges, but some remain intact.[/ic]

[ooc]The Sun is presently setting, it will be about half an hour before it is below the horizon.  The sky is cloudless, so the waxing gibbous moon and the stars should be easily viewable.[/ooc]

[ic=Behrem]As long as it is okay with Atefeh, Behrem will keep moving along the walkway. He's not too concerned with the side doors just now, but we should maintain some separation between us so if we are ambushed we won't both be trapped. And he'll pause ever 20 meters or so to listen for any sounds and scan the upper walkway.[/ic]

[ic=DM]Atefeh and Behrem walk some distance down the hallway, seeing and hearing nothing.  However, as Behrem takes another step, he accidentally steps on a small pile of rubble, and the stones scratch against the ground.

An instant later, Behrem hears the twang of a bow being fired, an instant before an arrow hits him, coming from somewhere down the hall.[/ic]

[ooc]The arrow deals 2 points of damage, minus whatever you roll for damage reduction.  Everyone needs to roll for Initiative.  Remember that every time you are damaged, you roll your armor's damage reduction.

As an additional note, Snake, your Defense is listed wrong.  You have it as "+1", when it should be 13.[/ooc]

[spoiler=Character Sheet]

[ooc]Initiative order for those currently involved is Beherm, the enemy, and then Atefeh.

As a note to everybody, when you are hit, I'll give you a damage value.  You then roll DR for each individual time you are hit.  Behrem, for example, was attacked for 2 points of damage.  He rolled a 1, so he only takes 1 point of damage.

We'll wait till the others roll initiative.  Since you said the others were following about a minute behind you, that puts them about 300 ft. away, and the unseen enemy within range of Atefeh and Behrem by means of a bow.[/ooc]

[ic=Behrem (hp=10)]I'm going to be moving to cover and preparing my bow. Also looking to spot where the enemy is firing from, using the sound and direction of the bow shot to locate.

[ooc]Actions in IH work the same as in D&D.  Moving to cover is, obviously, a move action.  Since you have a BA of +1, you can draw a weapon as a part of your move action.  Drawing ammunition is a free action.  This leaves you with a standard action.

You'll need to make a Spot check to try and locate the enemy.  This kind of spot check takes a move action, because you failed last time.

All taken into account, you won't get a chance to attack this round.[/ooc]

[ooc]Crit, you didn't indicate if you moved or not.  If you did, then your turn is up.  If not, you have a standard action and are standing in the open.

Hyaled can act whenever Atefeh finished.  Seeing as he's 300 feet away, I'm going to assume he's just going to be moving, should he choose to act, of course.  Rashine and Faridoon have yet to roll for initiative.[/ooc]

[ic=Behrem]Since Behrem ducked for cover without checking it out first, he'll start by checking out the area around and behind him, both to make sure he's safe and check for alternatives.

Assuming he doesn't find anything, he'll stay behind cover, listen and watch, and delay action in case he needs to cover Atefeh for something.
[/ic]

[ooc]Seems like I could spend my tactical token to improve my cover here? If so, I'd like to do that.

Added in edit: I'd also like to spend a move action studying the situation to gain another token. But since I'm delaying my actions, I don't think I can do that just yet.

[ic=DM]The archer is biding his time.  Both the archer and yourselves are on the same side of the hallway, meaning that neither can get a shot off until the other moves into the open.  The archer calls out "Parskakanner!" once again.[/ic]

[ooc]Clarifications:  The hallway at its widest is 35 feet wide, with the balconies on either side approximately 10 feet up, and extending over 10 feet of the hallway.  The doors on the bottom are on the far outside.  Thusly, Behrem , Atefeh, and the archer are unable to get a shot off at each other, unless one of them exposes themselves.  Everyone now knows where everyone else is.

[ic=Behrem]Okay, Behrem is going to check out the nearest doorways on his side of the hall. Making sure there's nothing there that would allow anyone to approach us from that direction.[/ic]

[ooc]Are the balconies cantilevered, or supported from below by posts or pillars? Any chance anyone could climb up from below?[/ooc]
Title: Heart of the Desert (IH) [IC]
Post by: limetom on December 05, 2006, 09:01:21 PM
[ic=DM]The balconies are supported by cantilever wooden supports, some of dubious strength.  There is a small railing, closer to a wall, rising on the outside of the balcony.  Climbing up its rough stone face should be no problem.  Geting to it requries a small feat of acrobatics, however.[/ic]

[ooc]Yet another scale ASCII hallway... just pray I don't pull out a grue.

[ic=Behrem](To Atefeh) Want to give me a leg up? I don't know if I can jump up and grab the edge by myself. If we stay away from him, he won't have a good shot at us while I climb unless he leans out. But I'd need some distraction once I'm up there, or he could make a pincushion of me.

[ooc]Inventive little scamps... :P

If you want to find out how weak it is, either make a Strength check or attack it.  Just be sure to get out of the way quick, 'cause could very well fall onto you.

A little extra information on Strength checks now that its come up, you can push yourself to the point of muscle strain.  Basically, you take 5 points of damage for a +2 bouns to your check.  You can gain additional +2 bonuses for taking additional 5 points of damage ad inifinitum.  You cannot, however, use this action and then use it again before healing the damage caused by it.

And there's only one archer.[/ooc]

[ooc]I will be available mostly during the holidays. My parents are visiting for the 15-23 so things will be a little flaky.

Not sure what skills to roll for this. I'll just roll a couple of relevant seeming ones:
Aid: [dice]1d20[/dice]
Jump: [dice]1d20+4[/dice]
Climb: [dice]1d20+4[/dice]
[/ooc]

[ic=Behrem]Behrem puts away his bow and prepares his knife. Close combat isn't his forte, but neither is melee and he'll probably be safer closing. Hopefully Atefeh will be able to get a decent shot at him if he pops up to shoot at me.[/ic]

[ooc]I will not have internet access from 14 December @ 3:00 pm HST (8:00pm EST) until 15 December @ sometime after 2:05 pm EST.

I'll (hopefully) get things moving again after that.[/ooc]
