(I will probably pretty this post up a bit in the morning. Right now I'm just trying to get it out quickly in a short break at work.)
I'm looking at taking on a new project, related to world building. It would be focused around a blog which I would repost / discuss on other related sites, including this one. The purpose of it is basically to document the creation, a little bit at a time, of a setting / conworld / whatever you want to call it. I would answer questions and such whenever possible throughout the project and even incorporate questions / ideas / whatever into the next post. That's the biggest reason for me spreading it out across the internet. Now I'd just like some feedback:
1. Does this seem like a good idea?
2. What should I call this? LC suggested Bonsai Worldbuilding. I kind of like that but I'm not sure if it's right.
3. What should be included in the process?
4. What sites should I post this to?
5. Does anyone know where I can get cheap or free web hosting? I will probably end up using one of the big blog sites unless I come across a better option. The big thing is that I retain legal rights to my own stuff and I'm not signing that away. If it goes well I would like to have the option to expand it and release it as an electronic book of some sort and I couldn't even really distribute it for free if I had agreed to give the rights to some other entity because I posted it on their servers.
...and that's all for the moment. Thanks,
---D!
Oops, I accidentally quoted myself instead of editting the post.
I think it's an interesting project. I'm not sure if it will lead where you think it will, but I think it has the chance of doing some good things.
I'm not sure exactly where it would lead but it could be fun to see.
I think this could be a lot of fun. I'd definitely follow it!
Out of curiosity, what is Bonsai Worldbuilding?
He suggested that title because I said it would be a "small, highly detailed world." He was making reference to bonsai trees, I believe.
Also, should I commit to regular updates (if I do this, it will probably be once monthly) or should I just go with a "when it's done" style, posting whenever I can have the next one ready?
The first way can increase regular readers, I'm told. I couldn't commit to doing it too frequently in that case, though. This also gives me more time to respond to feedback.
The second way would probably have me produce more content, more oftwn, but likely with long spaces of nothing.
Regularity helps consistency. "Whenever I can" very often ends up being "whenever I can be bothered".
Perhaps a once a month minimum, with supplementary whenever-I-can's in between?

That's kind of what I was thinking. One regular one per month and supplemental ones in between that respond to feedback or slightly expand on the topic from the month. Only really 'move forward' with the project once per month.
Apparently the actual meaning of "Bonsai" has to do with potted plants, so I'm leaning away from 'Bonsai Worldbuilding". The problem is, I can't seem to come up with a better idea.
The name 'World In Progress' just came to me. That might be a way to go.
That's way better than any other suggestion so far. I think you should go with it.
I've settled on the name A World In Progress. The first posting, a simple declaration of intent, should be up June 1st.
