[ic=Session 1: The Festival of Litha]
The Sun rises, and all Tulainn is gathered for Litha'"The festival of Midsummer. Farmers, rangers, and all those flung about the countryside have gathered here at the shores of Loch Scáthan for the feast. Craftsmen set up their wares in tents, erected to accommodate the influx. Fighting men seek to prove their worth in the wrestling arena and in the chariot races, while the boys of the troop engage in heated and violent games of Hurley.
This afternoon comes the filiacht: the bardic contests. The celebrations continue into the night with tales and fire. Just before daybreak, Obhernan the druid will lead the village in the rituals of Litha at the stone circle outside the village.
But that is yet to come. Now it is just past midday, at the height of the Games.[ooc]12:30 pmRobhartach: ooc: I think we all know where rob will be
12:31 pmKegain: ooc: where are we specifically and what are we doing
[/ooc]
Robhartach is engrossed in a game of hurley. Laidir treads the grounds of the fair with a confident stride, idly plucking the strings of his dulcimer. Wyrgan lingers at the fringes of the festivities, reluctant to join in. He wrinkles his nose, as if at a bad smell. Kegain watches the games anxiouslyKegain: It's fun to at least watch though, right Wyrgan?
Wyrgan: These frivolities seem rather pointless; contrived.
Kegain: (
frowns)..Oh. Maybe.
Wyrgan: (
kicks a pebble.) Do not let my reluctance spoil your day, Kegain. Enjoy yourself, if it please you.
Kegain: I think I'll just keep watching with you... wouldn't be able to find a team, anyways..
Laidir arrives at the edge of the hurley fields and pauses to observe the ongoing contest. Wyrgan notes the older boy's arrival, but says nothing. He flicks a lank lock of hair out of his pallid, rather ghoulish face. Robhartach is currently shouldering two smaller boys out of the way as he knocks the ball with the hurley down the field. Wyrgan smiles as he feels his familiar, Cinniceadh-Bhéis, uncoil and scuttle surreptitiously down his body to wrap itself around his calf.[ooc][spoiler]12:36 pmWyrgan: ooc: are any bullies of Wyrgan playing hurley?
12:38 pmRobhartach: ooc: sorry I do kind of know what hurley is but I'll probably mix terms up heh
12:38 pmWyrgan: ooc: hurley is the stick i think
12:38 pmRobhartach: ooc: yea
12:39 pmKegain: ooc: did you die seraphine
12:39 pmRobhartach: ooc: I'm wondering the same lol
12:39 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: No, sorry. Looking at notes
12:39 pmKegain: ooc: good to know
12:40 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: Hurley is both the game, which is essentially Field Hockey, and also the stick
12:40 pmKegain: ooc: no pressure! different format and such.
12:43 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: To answer your question, Wyrgan there are 2 on Rob's team, and 4 on the opposing team
[/spoiler][/ooc]
Robhartach knocks the ball with the hurley. Laidir plucks his dulcimer and voices poetic words in encouragement of Rob's teamLaidir: "Like a charging boar! That youth, boldly delivers the ball"
Wyrgan fixes one of the ruffians on the opposing team with the droch shuil.[ooc]12:44 pmWyrgan: hex for skill penalty

Catching Wyrgan's eye, the boy is struck dumb. He looks about him nervously. Robhartach crashes through the boy as he suddenly stops in his path. Robhartach yells back 'Oops!' Robhartach keeps on going though. Kegain winces at the sight. Wyrgan smirks. The momentum of the game shifts to Robhartach's team. The boy staggers to his feet, having been knocked to the ground. He charges after Robhartach, who has possession of the ball, attempting to take it from himLaidir: Oi! Don't let the dumbstruck one catch you!
Robhartach: (
Runs the ball towards the goal at speed)Try and keep up lads. (
smirks)

Wyrgan sneers - this peurile pastime annoys him intensely. Laidir shouts instructions at Rohartach, drawing from his impressive know-how in the art of wrestling [ooc]1:04 pmLaidir: ooc: did they score?[/ooc]
Robhartach drops his hurley and takes him as he comes. Wyrgan perks up at the sight of violence, which always stirs him strangely. [ooc][spoiler]1:04 pmRobhartach: ooc: is the charging boy still holding his hurley?
1:05 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: holding, yes, but he is not using it as a weapon

The boy plows into Robhartach, knocking him to the ground. However, as Robhartach is tackled, the cheers in the background signal that Rob's teammate has scored! Kegain claps thunderously and stomps his feet, Laidir cheers and begings playing a vivacious tune to celebrate to goal, trying also to impress the audience with his skills. Wyrgan looks at Kegain incredulously and snorts. Kegain: But it was a good shot, Wyrgan!
Wyrgan: If you say so.
The game is over, and Rob's team is victorious! It took a slight nick to his pride, but the sacrifice was worth it. The winning team are awarded decorative bronze cloak-pins.[ooc]1:10 pmKegain: ooc: well. decent start. I have to finish getting ready for class.
1:10 pmRobhartach: ooc: see yea
1:10 pmLaidir: ooc: cheers
1:10 pmWyrgan: later TMG [/ooc]
Robhartach slaps the boy he passed it to on the back a bit roughly Robhartach: Good job on that last goal
Seamus: I couldn't have done it without you Rob. Just try to keep your feet next time (
punches Robhartach lightly on the arm)
Robhartach: Would have liked to score myself but the other lad had none of it and I had to teach him a lesson
Seamus: Oh that's right. You certainly showed him.
[ooc]1:17 pmWyrgan: ooc: is Seamus one of the 2 bullies on Rob's team, or no?
1:18 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: nah
1:18 pmWyrgan: ooc: k, just checking
[/ooc]
Robhartach laughs and heads over to pick up his shield and club which are leaning against a tree near Wyrgan. Laidir goes around congratulating the players of the victorious team, pausing as he comes up to Rob.Laidir: You play the game well, boy, but you could do better when it comes to the wrestle
Robhartach: Boy eh? (
Chuckles and punches Laidir lightly on the arm as he heads over to get his shield) You're a funny one.
Wyrgan scrutinizes some insects crawling through the hurley field. Far more absorbing than the inane antics of his so-called 'peers.'Kegain: You sure do like your bugs. (
Peers over Wyrgan's shoulder)
Laidir: Oh, I do strive to entertain.
Robhartach picks up his shield and club hefting the wooden shield onto his back and tucking the club away.
Robhartach: I'll say
Wyrgan: They have much to teach us. Such creatures have no need for games and diversions of this sort. All effort is devoted to furthering the interests of the hive; no energy is wasted on pointless competition.
Robhartach: That's Wyrgan all right, always ready to spoil the taste of victory. (
Robhartach grins and roughs up wyrgan's hair) Come on don't be so dour.
Wyrgan shoots Robhartach a dark look.Obhernan: Now Wyrgan, the competitions are far from pointless
Laidir bows hastily in greetings to the druid, whose approach he had not noticed. The Druid of Tulainn and Beldangan is a bearded elder who keeps his hair carefully bound up in braids. He has grown, perhaps, a touch feeble with age, but he moves with ease and grace. The staff he carries is no walking stick, but a symbol of his authority. It is a twisted shaft of oak, ringed with mistletoe and adorned with clattering chips of rowan, ash, birch, elder, and woods from each of the magical trees, each adorned with an Ogham symbol.
Obhernan wears his ceremonial robes of white linen, trimmed with an elaborate emerald knot pattern. About his waist is a broad sash of red gold bisected by a crimson cord, the ends of which trail down his right side. Thus belted he keeps a sickle of silver. Around his neck is a torque of braided gold. The end caps of the torque are hound heads of burnished white gold, whose ears are coated with red enamel.[ooc]1:23 pmWyrgan: ooc: what is the proper form of address for a druid? sir? 'elder obhernan'?
1:23 pmRobhartach: ooc: for wyrgan? probably you mangy old coot... but only behind his back
1:23 pmRobhartach: ooc:
1:23 pmDM: Elder would be appropriate [/ooc]
Kegain: Elder! My ma's been worried about your health, but I can see you're strong as a tree! I'll be sure to tell her! (
Grins widely)
Obhernan: Yes, Kegain, I assure both you and your mother that I am in the peak of health.
Wyrgan: Of course, Elder. I was making a jest.
Obhernan: The competitions keep the youth fit and healthy, and ready to defend our lands against invaders. Do not mock them.
Wyrgan has a wary respect for the man, though he bristles at the chiding, contemptuous as he is of authority.Wyrgan: (
Restrains himself from inflecting his words with sarcasm.) Of course, Elder. I am sure the skills gleaned on the hurley-field are invaluable in combat.
Robhartach: (
Pats the club at his side) I certainly feel more ready.
Kegain: I knew you'd come around, Wyrgan!
Wyrgan opens his mouth as if to speak, then closes it.Laidir: Of course, these games alone will not be enough to make one a warrior, but they do help one along that path.
Obhernan: Now boys, How would you like to do something for me?
Kegain: Of course, Elder! Just ask!
Robhartach: Certainly elder
Obhernan: My boys, I find myself in need of service. You see, I tasked my apprentice Beolom, a well-meaning boy, but rather indiscriminate, with fetching a salmon for the ritual at first light tomorrow morning, and the creature he returned with simply isn't suitable. Unfortunately, we both have duties in the preparation of the ritual that prevent him or me from fetching a new one for ourselves. How would you boys like to do a favor for an old druid?
Kegain nods enthusiastically. Wyrgan: (
Mutters under his breath.) At least it'll get us away from this foolishness...
Kegain: I know fish, and I'll bet I can find you the right one! Wyrgan would love to come too!
Robhartach: I'm sure he would
Wyrgan: (
Speaks up) Yes indeed.
Obhernan: What you must do is enter the forest of Coilliath, follow the river north to a spot where the Hazelnut tree grows, and stretches its arm across its length to dip its fingers in the water. There you must fish for a salmon alone. Bait your line with the fruit of the tree and wait for the salmon to bite. You will know him when he comes.
Robhartach: Sounds like good fun, and I know the woods, my master taught me em
Laidir: I would be honored to perform this task for you, elder, even though it be simple
Obhernan: Excellent! Now go, and return to me with the Salmon. Make haste!
Wyrgan skulks off towards the wood. Kegain follows Wyrgan cheerily. Laidir tags along.
[ooc]1:32 pmWyrgan: ooc: reminds me of the Fable starting quests
1:33 pmKegain: ooc: good place to stop? I actually have to be out the door in 2 minutes
1:33 pmObhernan: ooc: Never played Fable, so I can't say for sure
1:33 pm1:33 pmRobhartach: ooc: think it would be good
1:34 pmObhernan: ooc: yes, I think this is an appropriate place to stop
1:34 pmRobhartach: ooc: isn't CE supposed to start soon or is it on hiatus?
1:34 pmWyrgan: it should be starting yeah

When we left them, our heroes were headed off to the woods of Coilliath, to find a salmon for Obhernan the Druid.
Kegain hums tunelessly. Wyrgan raises his shoulders and skulks along. Laidir treads in a carefree manner, though his eyes scan the surroundings keenly. Robhartach plods along happily.
The sounds of the festival slowly fade. You can just hear the starting shreds of a bard beginning to try his hand at the Filiacht . . .
Bard: Listen, my child, and heed this advice:
If you meet with Old Sorin, you needn't think twice.
Just bid him good morrow and turn right around,
For if you should cross him you'll never be found. . .
No more of his song can you hear, as your path takes you further and further from the Litha festival.
Laidir: I hope this won't take long, so we'll be back before the bardic contests are over
Robhartach adjusts the shield on his back
You come to the edge of the forest, where a great doorway of stone marks the path: two great stones standing on end, topped with a great slab of a capstone.
[ooc][spoiler][11:52] <Wyrgan> ooc: any markings?
[11:52] <Wyrgan> ooc: on the stones
[11:53] <Robhartach> ooc: "wyrgan is a weirdo" written in chalk by a child's hand perhaps
[11:53] <Robhartach> :P
[11:53] <Seraphine_Harmonium> Yes, but many of them are worn away with the years[/spoiler][/ooc]
There are a few markings on the stones, but most are worn away with age. The only markings that remain legible read '. . . ware . . . . . oilliath."
Laidir halts before the doorway. Robhartach waves the group on
Robhartach: Lets go get a fish.
Laidir: Always take heed when you're about to enter a doorway. Never know where you might end stepping through! (laughs)
Kegain: The other side?
Robhartach: I'm pretty sure I know where I'll end up if I step through this one
Robhartach jumps through the doorway. Kegain scratches his head. Wyrgan passes through. Laidir steps through, next. Kegain shrugs and follows the others
You all make your way through the door. The woods around you are rather dark for how far into the woods you are, but you can still see light from the edge of the woods.
Robhartach leads the group along the path at ease in a place he's been in countless times. Wyrgan moves swiftly and comfortably through the undergrowth. He prefers the solitude and quiet of the woods to the bustle of the village. The company of others diminishes his enjoyment, though as he enters the shadows of the trees he relaxes, and his shoulders drop. Laidir draws a flute from under his belt and starts playing a quiet, eerie tune, clearly improvised and and inspired by the atmosphere of the dark woods.
[ooc][spoiler][11:59] <Wyrgan> ooc: do we need to make any checks to find the right way to the stream or whatnot?
[11:59] <Seraphine_Harmonium> ooc: yes, go ahead and make a check. But since Rob knows the woods so well, it shouldn't be a difficult check

Robhartach's senses must be muddled, as the paths you so often follow seem strange to you. Luckily Wyrgan is able to locate the tell-tale signs that lead toward the river.
Wyrgan: You oaf, it's this way. (gestures and sets off)
Robhartach: Really? Well ok then Wyrg. (musses Wyrgan's hair)
Kegain nods sagely and follows Wyrgan. Laidir walks after the others, still playing the flute. Wyrgan gives Robhartach a dirty look, but restrains himself from using the droch shuil. Robhartach is happily walking along and grins at Wyrgan.
You come to the edge of the river, a smooth but swiftly flowing body.
Wyrgan: I told you.
Robhartach: so you did, and good job too
[ooc][12:04] <Robhartach> ooc: that aught to put wyrgan off heh[/ooc]
Laidir: He may be dour but clearly he's got some useful skills!
Wyrgan is finding Robhartach's persistent good cheer exasperating, but it certainly shuts him up.
Laidir: Now to find that place with the bent tree
Robhartach: aye
Kegain: It's not bent! The hazelnut grows tall and strong.. Just too close to the shore.
Laidir: Have any of you seen it before perchance?
Robhartach: there's an awful lot of trees along rivers in the forest
Kegain: I've seen it before.. but I can't remember where.
Kegain looks around sheepishly. Robhartach looks at Kegain oddly
Robhartach: Oh! Well good, lead on then. I'm sure you'll remember

Wyrgan throws a stone into the river. Laidir starts fluting again, this time a more playful tune
Robhartach: Well come on we don't have all day, don't want the festival to end without us
Another tune rises up to meet the one Laidir plays; A romping jig. Wyrgan is about to throw another pebble but stops mid-throw. Robhartach takes Kegain by the hand and starts to drag him along... but stops at the sound.
Robhartach: Did you hear that?
[ooc][12:10] <Kegain> ooc: I don't think rob *could* drag kegain.
[12:11] <Robhartach> ooc: rob is pretty strong, unless kegain was actively fighting him he'd probably come along[/ooc]
Kegain stands implacably still, despite Robhartach's persistence.
The music fills you, and you feel the urge to dance. Laidir alters his playing, trying to match the other tune. Kegain starts humming along with the tune, his foot tapping the ground.

Robhartach: (Looks at Kegain.) Well I didn't think the music was THAT good, heh.
Kegain smiles as he dances. Wyrgan looks around for the source of the music, if any.
Robhartach: Come on, let's go find out what's making that music
Robhartach goes but gets dragged back by Kegain dancing
Robhartach: Hey stop that, lad!
Laidir stops playing, a surprised look on his face
Laidir: This music is... quite out of the ordinary!
Kegain: Don't you know the steps? Dance!
Robhartach: (Smacks kegain on the back of the head) Come on, no time for foolin' around!
Kegain grimaces at the smack, but keeps dancing
Wyrgan: He's bewitched you lackwit. Something is playing with us.
Robhartach: (Lets go of Kegain) Ugh well I'm gonna go ask him to cut it out. (Heads after the music)
Kegain begins dancing around Wyrgan in a circle. Wyrgan watches Kegain with a look of bemused disdain.
Kegain: (Laughs) It's like my feet won't stop!
Wyrgan strongly suspects a pixie. His familiar has told him of such beings and their tricks.
Laidir: Cover your ears Kegain! Maybe then this wicked tune won't compell you so.
Kegain: Why would I do that? It's a good song!
Wyrgan: Some sprite is toying with your mind.
Laidir: But aren't you going to get tired dancing like that?
Kegain: I could dance all day!

Wyrgan: I think it's on the other side. Kegain, stop dancing. You're big enough to ford the river without being swept away. I will ride on your shoulders.
Kegain: I'm not sure if I can! I'm trying!
[ooc][spoiler][12:27] <Robhartach> ooc: how deep and wide is the river

Wyrgan gets out his sling, just in case. Robhartach looks back and forth between kegain and the bushes then turns and charges Kegain. Kegain is just able to stop dancing and function normally, though his feet still at moments move with the music. Robhartach slams into kegain at speed, knocking him to the ground.
[ooc][12:29] <Kegain> ooc: a bit premature maybe, nomadic :p[/ooc]
Kegain: Oof! (Frowns and pushes Rob off of himself) That wasn't very nice of you.
Suddenly the music stops.
Robhartach: (Looking around warily) Come on let's go find out what that was. (Helps Kegain up)
Wyrgan: Better to leave it be than go poking our noses about.
Robhartach: Where's your sense of adventure?
Wyrgan: Whatever it was it seems to have grown bored with us. Let's get the fish and count ourselves lucky.
Kegain: You don't want me to carry you across anymore? I think I could do it. Maybe.
Robhartach: just 10 seconds ago you wanted to go find it
Wyrgan: That was before it stopped playing. I didn't want to find it to have a nice chat.
Laidir: Who ever played that music may be getting away already
Robhartach: Come on it won't take long, just a look at the far bank behind the bushes. I know you're as curious as I am.
Laidir: With a head start and us having to cross the river, we could hardly expect to catch them
Kegain: Wyrgan is right. The Elder needs that fish, we can't just do as we please. This is important.
Robhartach: The fish can wait a minute
Robhartach wades into the water and heads across
Robhartach: I'll be right back then
Wyrgan shakes his head. Kegain gives Wyrgan a questioning look
Kegain: Should we wait for him?
Laidir: I guess if you're lucky, you just might find some tracks over there
Wyrgan: He's going to get in trouble and then we'll get blamed.
A voice calls out from the trees behind you:
Voice: You don't want to be crossing that river, clumsies!
Wyrgan spins, sling at the ready. Kegain turns, ponderously. You see nothing there.
[ooc][12:35] <Seraphine_Harmonium> ooc: though if you like, you can make perception checks[/ooc]
Kegain: Stop spying on us! It's rude!
Laidir: Someone's playing us the fools here, alright
Wyrgan knows that certain sprites can make themselves invisible. He listens carefully.

Robhartach stops and looks over at where the voice came from.
Voice: Clumsies have a job to do. We knows it, doesn't we?
Wyrgan: I hope we are not trespassing. We're merely hoping to find a fish.
The voice seems to be coming from the trees themselves; first one, then another. But the voice moves along up the river. Wyrgan raises an eyebrow.
Kegain: I know trees. And trees don't talk.
Wyrgan: Not in a tongue we understand. Usually, anyway.
Kegain mulls that over in his head. Robhartach with his typical attention span comes back out of the river and follows the voices
Robhartach: Wait, what's going on?
Kegain: I don't know! Let's just get that fish and leave.
Voice: Clumsies shouldn't waste time scratching their heads.
Laidir: Someone's in the woods, playing a prank on us
Kegain starts walking along the trail, head held high in defiance of the voice
Voice: It's into the woods you've got to go, to get your wish and have a fish."
The voice moves away from you along up the river. It heads deeper into the forest
Robhartach: Well let's go find them then, I imagine I could knock 'em on their back for this. (follows the voice)
Kegain: (Looks back hesitantly as Rob heads into the woods) But.. the fish!
Wyrgan: It could be trying to trick us.
Laidir: There's no point running after voices. We got fishing to do.
Wyrgan: If Rob gets kidnapped by sprites or eaten by enchanted trees they won't care if we've got the fish or not.

[ooc][12:44] <Seraphine_Harmonium> @Rob: It occurs to you that the hazelnut tree must be further up the river. In the same direction the voice is moving.[/ooc]
Robhartach: (Yells back to the group) Come on you fish lovers I think the fish tree is this way anyways.
Wyrgan sighs and follows Rob.
Robhartach: You can get your fish and I can knock this guy's block off, everyone wins.
Laidir: Well, I'm fine with that plan. (Makes haste through the underbrush)
Kegain: (Wrinkles his brow) ...Knocks me over, running this way and that... (Keeps pace behind Wyrgan)
You follow along up the river, and the water gets ever choppier
Voice: That's right silly clumsies! You're nearly there!
Wyrgan doesn't like this at all. He keeps one hand near his knife.
Kegain: You look worried Wyrgan. It's just someone playing a prank, right?
Wyrgan: Perhaps. But sometimes pranks can be dangerous, Kegain. Be cautious.
Kegain nods
[ooc][12:49] <Wyrgan> ooc: Wyrgan is 'genre savvy'
[12:50] <Robhartach> ooc: heh I should say "what's the worst that could happen" just to see if he'll cringe

Laidir: I wish they'd stop calling us "clumsies". So rude!
Wyrgan: If all they do is call us a few names I'll be glad enough.
The voice gets less frequent, and you travel for several minutes without hearing anything else
Wyrgan: Rob, you're supposed to know these woods. Where have they led us?

Robhartach: Somewhere (continues on)
[ooc][12:53] <Seraphine_Harmonium> ooc: ROFL[/ooc]
Wyrgan: That is not helpful. Are you saying we're lost?
Kegain: (Groans again) Lost? I don't like being lost...
Robhartach: Come on I know where we're going, I'll figure out where to go after that
Kegain: Ma will have a fit if I'm not home before dark.
Laidir: Well, so long as we follow the riverbank, we should find that darn tree sooner or later no?
Robhartach: Yep. And besides the river has to come out of the forest somewhere so if nothing else we can always follow it back. No use worrying now.
You hear a giggling from behind you
Robhartach: (Stops) Come out here where I can see ya.
Wyrgan looks over his shoulder - though he doesn't truly expect to see anything.
Robhartach: This is getting annoying
Voice: Teeheehee!
Now the voice comes from across the river
Robhartach: Not this time you don't. I'm already wet enough.
Laidir: Are there two of them, on both sides of the river?
Robhartach heads on towards the fish tree. In the midst of its shrill cackling, another voice joins in, giggling from in front of you.
Wyrgan: (whispering) Ignore them. Perhaps they'll leave us alone.
Then a voice laughs from your left. Laidir spins on his heels, confused
Robhartach: Better get out of my way or I'll be knocking your head off when I bump into ya
Laidir: Just how many of them are there?!
Robhartach: (brandishes his club) Don't matter. Come on keep movin they're tryin to mess with us.
Laidir: Right. We need that fish. This errand sure is getting more complicated than I expected
[ooc][spoiler][13:00] <Seraphine_Harmonium> ooc: so you are ignoring the voices and continuing up the river?

Kegain looks around nervously, but keeps with the others. You keep moving forward, and soon begin to hear the voices whispering to each other. It's hard to make out what the voices are saying, but they seem intent on you knowing they are saying SOMETHING.
[ooc][spoiler][13:03] <Kegain> ooc: just to note, when we come to the tree, kegain will try to set the line, since he has 8 in climb and 8 in swim

Wyrgan: Don't provoke them!
Robhartach: Maybe they shouldn't provoke me
Laidir: They have been trying their best to provoke us. . .
Robhartach stomps along. Wyrgan makes a growling sound of annoyance.

You notice a spot on the ground that doesn't seem quite right. The earth is slightly upturned and there are a unusual number of leaves strewn here
Robhartach: (Stops) Wait, hold on. Something isn't right.
Wyrgan: No really?
Robhartach reaches over and grabs a branch, ignoring Wyrgan's sarcasm. He stands back and pokes at the pile.
[ooc][13:13] <Wyrgan> ooc: pit trap, must be
[13:13] <Robhartach> ooc: or a snare
[/ooc]
The leaves and loose earth collapse, revealing a deep pit dug into the earth. Robhartach peers down into the dirt hole. Wyrgan gulps. Had Rob been less aware of his surroundings, he might have tromped right into it.
Robhartach: Ok I don't think someone's playing pranks anymore
Wyrgan finds himself grateful for Rob's attentiveness... what an odd sensation. Robhartach now takes care to check his surroundings as he goes. Some of the voices snicker, others "ooh."
Robhartach: Ok let's go get that fish
Laidir: We'll better be careful. Who know what else they've got prepared for us?
You make your way around the pit, and continue along the river. Wyrgan slows his pace a bit, keeping his eyes peeled for more traps. Robhartach seems a bit more pale than is normal.
Kegain: (stares wide-eyed at the pit) Would have been a nasty fall...
Laidir: Come on Kegain, don't get left behind.
Ahead of you, you see it. A tree overhanging the river. At the site, a number of rocks interrupt the flow of the water. This area is a rapids.
Robhartach: (Points) Here we are.
Kegain perks up at the sight. Robhartach shoulders his shield and puts his club away. Kegain looks at the overhanging branch.
[ooc][13:19] <Kegain> ooc: how thick is it, could it support kegain?
[13:19] <Robhartach> ooc: I hope not if only because I know it would support wyrgan and that would be an amusing sight[/ooc]
The branch hangs low over the water. It is strong where it meets the tree, but the part that o'erhangs the river is thin and spindly. The branch bobs, dipping a hazel nut into the water with a calm rhythym.
Laidir: Let's get on with it and hope the fish bites!
Kegain: Hmmmmmm. (Nods to himself)
Robhartach: so how do we wanna do this?
Kegain: I can climb out a ways. I'll watch for a bite.
Wyrgan: Someone will need to bait a line. You three are too big - I'll have to do it. Make sure our friends don't cause any mischief.
Voices: (Snickering.) Teehee! Mischeif!
Kegain cocks his head to the side inquisitively. Robhartach looks at Wyrgan. Wyrgan clambers onto the tree to try and snatch the hazlenut.
Robhartach: hmm wouldn't have expected you to volunteer
Kegain: Are you sure, Wyrgan..? You're not the strongest swimmer yet!

Laidir moves downstream-wise along the riverbank. Robhartach wades out under the tree as far as he can safely go. Wyrgan climbs the tree well enough, keeping his hands and feet. As he climbs out onto the branch, it begins to dip, submerging the hazelnut
[ooc][13:25] <Wyrgan> ooc: can I still grab it?[/ooc]
Even with Wyrgan's light weight, the branch creaks and screams in protest. He can climb out to the edge and try to grab the nut, but he would risk the branch snapping off, and being thrown down the rapids. Wyrgan can see into the water, and sees several fish swimming by, some eyeing the hazel nut with interest.
[ooc][13:27] <Kegain> ooc: are there no other nuts on the tree...?
[13:28] <Seraphine_Harmonium> ooc: Just the one.

Laidir: Good work there! You had me worried for moment.
Upon examination, the fish is indeed a salmon. Wyrgan gets his knife out and makes to swiftly kill the fish, when it swallows the nut, looks up at you, and says:

I'm really enjoying our character dynamics. So often in games I've played before IRL character personality has taken a backseat to mechanics, but all my experiences online gaming at this site have been awesome - everyone here is the kind of player GM's hope for.
You're doing a great job so far, Seraphine! I'm curious whether we find out what kind of fey these are, if they are fey. Initially I though pixies but then I realized grigs can also turn invisible, but for all I know it could be neither.
Thanks! You guys are all great, too. I've never had a group that worked together this well, even when I had an IRL group.
[ic=Session 3: The Salmon of Knowledge]The day grows dark. The sky grows red. This spot at the bank of the river, in addition to the hazel tree, also is home to a great oak and ash, which have intertwined, wrapping around each other, spiraling to the sky. This binary tree-system is ringed with hawthorn bushes. A Salmon looks up at you with pleading eyes.
Fish: I implore you, set me free.

Laidir: It speaks?!?
Wyrgan: How did you learn to speak the tongue of men, fish?
Fish: Do you not know?
Wyrgan: I would hardly be asking you if I did.
Fish: A salmon that eats of the hazel nut is granted great wisdom, and sometimes even the power of speech
Laidir: Surely this must be a dream! Are you dreaming, Rob? (pinches Rob to check)
Kegain: (looks around nervously) What should we do, Wyrgan?
Fish: Did your druid not tell you this?
Wyrgan: Hmm. We were told to fetch a salmon we had baited with a hazel nut. Obhernan must have realized this would happen.
The fish looks uncomfortable
Wyrgan: What would you offer us in exchange for your life, fish?
Fish: And do you think he'd have wanted me killed? I can answer a great many questions.
Robhartach: the-then tell me fish what the heck is going on. I've been in the woods many times and never met talking trees are weird voices out to get me
Fish: But please, I am a creature of the water. I cannot long survive apart from it.
Laidir rubs his eyes and moves to get a closer look at the amazing fish
Fish: Return me to the river and I will be glad to answer all of your questions

Fish: You see? Your companion has seen that I tell the truth. Why do you continue to think ill of me?
Wyrgan ignores the fish, but he is increasingly worried about what Obhernan intends to do with it. His lack of empathy for humans is balanced by an intense love of beasts - even annoying talking fish.
Robhartach: nothing personal fish but I'm not really comfortable talking with something that normally says nothing. It doesn't leave much to trust. Though perhaps. . . Hey wyrgan hand him here for a second, not going to hurt him

Laidir: Hm. If Obhernan knew we'd be catching such a wonderful fish, why didn't he warn us about it?
Robhartach: (Looks at laidir) Maybe it's a... I don't know, test?
Wyrgan: He did mention that we'd 'know it when it comes.'
Robhartach: (Holds the salmon gently but firmly) Wisdom hmm . . . You wouldn't perhaps know what is going on with all these strange voices
Fish: Ah yes, ranger. When the forest fills with voices, surely you needs must make choices
Kegain hews away at the tree with precision. It is slow going, but the tree shows every indication that when it falls, it will fall where he wants it to
Kegain: Oohhhh, trees! Flames for the hearth and wood for the hall! Cutting it right, I'll know where it falls!
Robhartach: I don't understand fish, I've been in the forest and master's told me of stories of talking creatures within the woods but I've never met one until now and before now they were trying to hurt us. Almost put me in a pitfall trap.
Fish: Creatures of the other world take insults to heart. Did you give it cause to seek your downfall? Wyrgan: I don't think we did. Unless they consider us tresspassers. They, it, whatever was stalking us.
Fish: Such folk are often sensitive. You may have slighted it unknowingly. You may be able to make it amends, if you give it a proper gift.
Laidir: What would be a 'proper' gift then?
Robhartach: If you're talking about the rock I tossed they have no rights to be offended. They started the whole ordeal. Offended us first
Fish: A rock, you say, ranger? Well this holds many possibilities. What kind of rock? How hard did you throw it? Did you throw it at them, or in their direction? Was it a game or an attack? These are important questions in your dealings with the Fair Folk.
Robhartach: I threw it in their direction cause they was pissing me off. Trying to lead us off and get us lost.
Fish: The Fair Folk love their games. Games and gifts are their two greatest loves.
Kegain continues to hum his song as he works at the tree. The old voice from the trees speaks out once more.
Voice: Clumsies waste time! The day is nearly done!
[ooc][spoiler]11:58 amRobhartach: ooc: how's the impromptu fishbowl coming
12:00 pmWyrgan: ooc: How far is Kegain from felling the tree?
12:00 pmKegain: ooc: it's not. we're still trying to cross the river to get to it.
12:00 pmWyrgan: ooc: we might not have time for this[/spoiler][/ooc]
Laidir: Sure would be good to get them off our backs with a gift. I'd hate to suffer their mischief while trekking these woods after dark!
Kegain: After dark? But I'll have to be home before then!
Kegain chops at the tree with renewed vigour
Wyrgan: How long can you survive out of water, Fish?
Fish: not more than a minute or two at most
Robhartach: how do you feel about being a part of the druids rituals fish?
Fish: It would be an honor, sir. For that I'd swim the way myself!
[ooc][spoiler]12:04 pmWyrgan: ooc: wait a second, does the river here flow into the village?
12:05 pmWyrgan: ooc: smart question rob
12:05 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: Not quite, but it flows nearby. You could follow it to the eastern outskirts of the town[/spoiler][/ooc]
Laidir: Then you will not mind if we carry you off to Obhernan, even if it means you'll perish?
Robhartach: I don't think wyrgan would like that much. OK fish. Obhernan will probably pop me one good for this but ok. (lets go of the fish) Make your way to the village.
Fish: With pleasure sir!
Robhartach: come on kegain it's getting late, don't want you getting popped on the head too
Kegain: (Stops cutting at the tree) Oh, we're going?
Robhartach: gettin dark
Kegain looks up at the sky Laidir sighs. The fish gives a little wiggle of a swim, points his nose straight downward, and disappears into the river. Robhartach looks down into the river. Wyrgan joins him.
[ooc][spoiler]12:07 pmKegain: ooc: did you mean downward or downstream

12:09 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: Kegain thinks he spots something. A fissure in the river bed. A crack leading down to something deeper[/spoiler][/ooc]
Kegain: There's a hole down there. Deep down. Did the fish lie to us?
Robhartach: well not much we can do now. (peering down into the rive,r trying to see into the water, Robhartach looks for the fissure)
Voice: Tsk tsk tsk. Clumsies had their prize and let it slip through their fingers.
A squat man with a fiddle emerges from the trees. He is round of feature and wears a jacket of bright blue. Wyrgan regards the creature warily.
Kegain: Not me! Rob let it go.
Creature: You'll have to do better than that if you want to get it back. I can show you how to find it. (Bows low, so his nose scrapes the ground)
Laidir: Wha- who might you be?
12:11 pmWyrgan: ooc: 10 bucks says Old Sorin
Creature: Swardhopper, at your service.
[ooc][spoiler]12:12 pmWyrgan: ooc: [/spoiler][/ooc]
Kegain moves to stand behind Wyrgan, trying to hide behind him. Rather unsuccessfully.
Wyrgan: You think the fish lied?
Swardhopper: Undoubtedly so. He's a slippery one. Gone back to Annwn he has.
Laidir goes a bit pale at the mention of Annwn
Swardhopper: (regarding Laidir) You've heard of it, have you laddie?
Laidir: I... I think I've seen a glimpse of it! Once... (shudders as the memory of his leap through time washes over him)
Wyrgan: We shouldn't follow him there. Better to go home empty-handed and take a beating from the druid.
Kegain nods vigourously in agreement with Wyrgan
Wyrgan: Do you know of a way to lure him back here, Swardhopper?
Swardhopper: well, if you knew his true name, you might be able to, but otherwise he does as he pleases. Well, as he or Old Sorin pleases . . . : 'course, nothing much pleases Old Sorin anymore
Kegain: But he didn't tell us his name!
Swardhopper: Wouldn't have mattered if he had. He'd not have told you his True Name. He'd have given you something like Eiscean.
Laidir: Alas! The fish is beyond capture now, no question about it.
Swardhopper: Not beyond capture if you were willing to brave Annwn. It is a place of danger, but also holds treasures and knowledge for those who know how to find it.
Wyrgan feels a strange pull. Annwn... he knows it would be dangerous, but a wanderlust has been kindled in his breast. He looks to the others.
Wyrgan: What should we do?
Robhartach: Go home. The fish isn't worth risking drowning for.
Laidir: There is but one thing to do: go back to Tulainn. It's getting dark, and I am *not* going to dive into that hole!
Wyrgan feels his heart quicken. Despite his earlier words his eyes glitter at Swardhopper's words.
Robhartach: After that fish I'm not willing to believe this guy either
Swardhopper: Your Druid's ritual will be ruined if you fail to get this fish. Who knows what disfavor might befall your village without it . . .
Kegain frowns at Swardhopper's words. Wyrgan does not care about the ritual but his curiosity is starting to overtake him...
Wyrgan: How would we get to Annwn and back safely? Dive into the fissure?
Wyrgan is aware that he is contradicting his earlier statement by considering this; more than anything he was trying to persuade himself not to go.
Kegain: I'm a good swimmer.. I could probably reach it.
Wyrgan: Could we devise a life-line of some kind?
Swardhopper: There are many paths into Annwn. All of them are found at the boundaries. Not all paths lead back
Kegain looks nervously back in the direction of Tulainn
Laidir: We don't even know if we'd fit to swim through it. It could get narrow, and we might get stuck.
Robhartach: I still say it isn't worth it.
Swardhopper: But do not fear, for while the path may not lead back, it will always lead you to a way. Follow the path long enough, and you will find what you seek.
Kegain: But who knows how long it'll take to find that fish! Ma will be worried... even if it is for the village.
Wyrgan hesitates for a moment. He is fully aware that he is about to do something incredibly foolish, even stupid - but the pull is too strong to resist.
Swardhopper: A bit of advice though: You'd be better off not throwing rocks. Not all of my kinsmen are as forgiving as I.
Kegain: I don't think we should go, Wyrgan. Let's head back...
Wyrgan gulps and takes a step back, eying the fissure. He ignores Kegain and, abruptly, dives into the river towards the fissure.
Kegain: Wait! (rushes to the bank.)
Robhartach: (Grabs at wyrgan) what do you think you're doing?

Wyrgan makes to swim down to the crevice, but the current of the river is too strong for him. It carries him towards the rocks of the rapids, but Robhartack gets a hand about his ankle and hold him, though only just. Robhartach calls out to Kegain and Laidir. Wyrgan splutters, painfully aware of how reckless and foolhardy he was.
Robhartach: help me drag him out
Laidir: (goes to lend a hand) What on earth got into your head that made you do that Wyrgan?
Swardhopper: That be the way to get yourself dead
Wyrgan: (Glares.) I... I don't know. Maybe there's some bewitchment round here.
[ooc][spoiler]12:32 pmWyrgan: ooc: shifty eyes... I was enchanted! [/spoiler][/ooc]
Kegain crosses his arms and glumly stares at Wyrgan
Swardhopper: You've got to stick to the path
Robhartach: what path?
Swardhopper: That path.
The little man points his finger towards the intertwined oak and ash. To your surprise, their bases have separated, and the two now mark a doorway. Through the doorway a well-traveled dirt path winds through the woods. Robhartach finishes fishing wyrgan from the water and goes over to look at the door.
Laidir: Wait, THAT is a way to Annwn?
Robhartach: looks like 2 trees to me. (Reaches his hand through the doorway they make) My master said something about it I think
Swardhopper: My boys, you sit on the threshold. Half in and half out.
Robhartach: the fey like boundaries
Wyrgan is humiliated, sopping wet, and furious with himself, but the pull remains.
Laidir: Doorways... You never know what lies beyond them
Swardhopper: I never could resist one, myself. Could you?
Robhartach: (Steps inside the door and looks around.) Hmm... seems like a-OW!
Robhartach catches his toe on a root and falls squarely on the threshold. Rob sees around him now what seems to be a strange reflection of the forest he knows. The leaves glimmer strangely, and the trees are covered with vibrant summer blossoms. The trees are taller, the grass longer.
[ooc][spoiler]12:37 pmKegain: ooc: can we still see him?
12:38 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: The rest of you can see Robhartach as he falls, but his image flickers in and out of vision[/spoiler][/ooc]
Robhartach: uh... (Looks around)
Wyrgan cannot stand the thought of the loutish Rob experiencing the Otherworld while he stands shivering and wet. He follows Rob in, a grimace on his face. Kegain turns his head to follow Wyrgan with his eyes as goes in.
Laidir: Hey, hold on now!
Kegain: Oh!
Laidir: Don't just waltz in through it! What if you can't get back?
Kegain: Oh no! Wyrgan!
Robhartach sits on the threshhold again hoping it will get him back. As Robhartach returns to the threshold of the trees, the rest of the forest on the other side retains its strange glimmer. You can see everyone on the other side, but though you walk in what should be the other side, you are not returned to your world
Wyrgan looks around. An uncanny feeling fills him, like he's been here before - or dreamt of a place like this. Everything is amplified here. The lights are brighter, and shadows darker.
Robhartach: Guys, Hello can you hear me? (Robs voice echoes as if spoken from somewhere distant)
Wyrgan looks at Rob and manages a half-smile.
Wyrgan: (quietly) Didn't you hear what Swardhopper said? The paths don't lead backwards.
[ooc][spoiler]12:40 pmLaidir: ooc: how does it look from this side?
12:40 pmLaidir: ooc: we lost sight of him?

Kegain turns to look plaintively at Laidir.
Kegain: We can't leave them there by themselves'¦ With that Rob around I just know Wyrgan would get into trouble'¦
Robhartach sits down on the threshold one more time
Laidir: You guys just had to get us all in such trouble...!
Kegain puffs up his chest and boldly strides between the two trees. Laidir marches angrily through the entrance
Laidir: That was very stupid of you! How do you suppose we'll find a way back now?
Wyrgan: Like Swardhopper said, we'll follow the path. Come on.
You all enter, and are struck by the intensity of light and shadow here. Swardhopper appears at your side
Swardhopper: This one learns quickly. Just stick to the path.
Kegain: ..I just know this is a bad idea.
Wyrgan really no longer cares much about the salmon, or the ritual. All of that seems unreal now, half-forgotten and unimportant. Still, he will stay with the other three for now.
Kegain: There's no way I'll make it back home before dark now!
Swardhopper: If you don't mind a little challenge though, I might be able to forgive that little rock throwing. Maybe even help you from time to time along the way
[ooc][spoiler]12:47 pmRobhartach: ooc: am I there?
12:48 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: You are now all in Annwn[/spoiler][/ooc]
Robhartach: Challenge?
Swardhopper: Aye, call it a game. That slippery fish did get something right. We love games here. You answer my questions aright, and I give you a trinket that may help you on your way.
Laidir: And if we answer wrong?
Kegain: Oh. I hope they aren't hard.
Swardhopper: I give you a pinch!
Laidir: All of us?
Swardhopper: To any he who guesses wrong. Each of you may give a guess. If none of you can find the answer, I go on my way.
Kegain balls his hands into fists and sets his jaw defiantly.
Kegain: Ok! I'm ready!
Wyrgan: Ask away.
Wyrgan is arrogantly sure of himself.
Swardhopper: First question: How much dirt is in a hole 6 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 3 feet deep?
Kegain 's eyes go wide at the question, and slowly glaze over as he thinks without blinking
Laidir: Easy! No dirt, because it's a *hole* (Laidir grins arrogantly, sure that his answer is correct)
Kegain: Ohhhh.
Swardhopper: Very good, my boy!
Robhartach scratches his head a bit at that one
Swardhopper: Next question: Finn and Dubhtach waged a bet on who could stay under water the longest without the aid of any breathing apparatus. Finn jumped in the lake and managed to stay under for a minute. Dubhtach knew he could not beat Finn using his method, but he won by staying under for two minutes using an old trick. What did Dubhtach do?
[ooc][spoiler]12:56 pmLaidir: ooc: I'll let someone else take this[/spoiler][/ooc]
Wyrgan: He poured water over himself for two minutes!
Kegain narrows his eyes and opens his mouth as if to speak, but no sound comes out. His face remains in this position.
Swardhopper: Aye, that'll do.
Kegain: Hm.
Swardhopper: Final question: King Eoric gave his wife a bottomless container to put flesh and blood in. What did he give her?
Laidir looks puzzled by the riddle. Robhartach 's head is starting to hurt. Wyrgan bites his lip, a bit stumped by this one...
Kegain: A.. uhhh. Uhmm. Did he fight a war for her?
Kegain feels a sharp pain on the back of his left thigh
Kegain: Ow!
Swardhopper: Wrong!

Swardhopper: This here is a cobweb ring, well known to the Fairies. There's more to it than meets the eye
Wyrgan perks up at the mention of cobwebs... Laidir stares at the ring fascinatedly

Laidir: I hope we won't need to use it.
Wyrgan: (nods. ) Thank you for the gift, Swardhopper.
Laidir: But don't go thinkign it's *yours* just because you're the one carrying it now, kid!
Wyrgan: Alright alright!
Swardhopper: Now, as we part, a few words of advice: Don't eat anything you didn't bring with you. Repay kindness. Avoid insulting anyone. Stick to the path. Follow instructions.
Robhartach: ...but we didn't bring anything with us to eat (Robhartach frowns)
Swardhopper: (Turns to Laidir.) A fellow musician. I like a man like you. If you and your friends ever have need of me, play a tune and call my name. I will come to your aid three times: once for each question answered right
Laidir: The tune we heard earlier on our way through the forest?
Swardhopper: (Gives a wink) If you like.
Laidir takes his flute and tries to repeat the tune from memory Swardhopper plays the tune again on his fiddle, pointing out the few notes that weren't quite right
Laidir: I think I got it now!
Swardhopper: Good! Now farewell friends! Stick to the path!
Swardhopper gives a little hop on his powerful legs and bounds up into the air, and disappears. Robhartach holds his stomach
Robhartach: b-but we don't have any food
The path lies before you, waiting to be traveled.
Laidir: We'll just have to be quick about finding the way home, then. Nothing else we can do about it.
Robhartach seems rather resentful of the whole thing but sighs and shrugs and heads down the path. Wyrgan follows hurriedly. Laidir treads the path, quite amazed and unnerved by the vivid scenery around him.

[ic=Session 4: Are ya up fer a little quest, Donkey?]The party sets off on its path through the otherworld. It seems lighter here; not the dim twilight you came from. Instead this area exudes an aura of early afternoon, though for the trees the sun itself cannot be spotted. The path leads up a small hill. On your right, up the river is a shallow waterfall, where the water bubbles over the edge to drip on some stones. Kegain is filled with a great sense of trepidation, as if this place is inimical to his very being. Wyrgan wanders slowly along, feeling - for the first time - at home...
Kegain: I don't like this, Wyrgan. It makes me nervous.
Laidir is still quite dazzled by the unearthliness of it all. Wyrgan turns slowly to Kegain, as if he'd forgotten about the other boy.
Wyrgan: Don't worry. Just remember what Swardhopper said and you'll be fine.
[ooc][spoiler] [11:32] <Seraphine_Harmonium> ooc: I take it you continue forward?
[11:32] <Kegain> ooc: usually a wise assumption [/spoiler][/ooc]
Wyrgan continues.
After some time trudging along the path, you come to an ancient woman hobbling with the aid of a twisted cane. She walks with a limp, her back bent nearly double under a heavy saddle basket of turnips and a bronze cauldron. At the angle she walks, most of her face is obscured by a tattered headscarf. One of her arms is in a sling. Laidir politely steps aside to let her pass. Wyrgan is hesitant. They were instructed to repay kindness and avoid insults, but not to help those in need - and this could be some sort of phantasm, or clever trap, a glamer of some kind...
After a moment, Wyrgan steps aside. Kegain cocks his head to one side, observing the woman quizically, but after a moment steps to the side of the road with the others
Wyrgan: (nods courteously) Good day, madam.
Kegain: That looks awful heavy! Would you care for some help? (Smiles at her)
Wyrgan shoots Kegain a dark look and bites his lip. Laidir glares nervously at Kegain.
Hearing your voices, the old woman looks up, a snaggletoothed smile brightening her lined face. You can see now that she is missing an eye. The empty socket stares back at you with more intensity than the eye that remains.
Woman: Bright Spirits; Bright Spirits sent you to me! Save my Morfran! The Fomors' got him, just down the path!
Kegain: (Wrinkles his brow) I'm not sure I understand...
Woman: (Pointing back the way she came from) If you don't hurry, I fear Morfran'll be killed and eaten!Â
Laidir: Who is Morfran? A child of yours?
Woman: Might as well be! He's my Donkey!
Wyrgan feels eerily energized by this place.
Woman: But I love him so, and how can I carry this great burden without him? It will be the death of me!
Kegain: Oh! That's why you're carrying all that stuff! We'll get him for you! (Turns to look at the others) Right?
Wyrgan looks at Kegain and, after a second's pause, nods, and readies his sling
Woman: Oh yes, please!
Laidir: We should not promise such things when the animal might already be a goner!

Kegain: Just down the road?
Woman: Aye, just down the road. A Fomor is a beasty thing. Be careful!
Wyrgan hastens back in the direction the crone gestured. Kegain looks down it warily, but then follows Wyrgan. Laidir makes haste with the others. Laidir draws his sling as he jogs forth.
You make haste down the path, coming to a rocky patch. Here you see the two Fomors, and they are a bizarre looking couple. One is a tall, hulking cyclopean thing, 9 feet tall, with one central eye, one arm and one foot. The other is smaller, human sized, with the head of a goat. The small one carries a longsword made of bronze, while the big one carries a massive club which now rests on the ground beside the body of a third, female fomor, lying dead, over which the big one builds a cairn from surrounding stones. Each of the two living fomors shows sign of injury, mostly cuts, bruises and strange burns. Wyrgan fits a stone in his slingshot.
Laidir: Ohh, there's two of them!

So, as I was naming Session 4, I realized I had missed out on an opportunity for an amusing image.
Preface: For the big Fomorian, I used Ogre stats as a starting point.
SO, I COULD have have an OGRE building a cairn for a fallen FEMALE ogre, and merely altered by description so that a CAT-Headed companion with a sword threatened a DONKEY.
YES! Took me a second to get it, that's hilarious though.
Will level up and post new stats tomorrow.
Haha that reference made me laugh pretty hard.
Ok I've updated my sheet (its on page 2).
So, I will not be able to make this upcoming Monday. We have two choices I can think of:
Take a week off
or
Find another time to play between now and a week from Monday.
We can vote on it. If you want to try and find another time, tell me when you have a chunk of time available.
I could do this coming Tuesday starting at 2pm EST or the following Friday starting at 3pm EST. On friday, my availability ends at 8pm EST.
Either of those days works for me!
Also, character sheet updated.
I could do either of those.
So can I.
Turns out my conflict on Monday fell through, so we can actually have it at the normal time, unless you guys have made other plans.
Cool by me!
I'm ok with that
Same here.
I can't make the usual time for tomorrow, cause I thought we weren't playing. Won't be on until ~3:30.
Ah. Ok, TMG. Does the next day, Tuesday work for you? It seemed to work for everyone else, and I am assuming it still does.
Can't on Tuesday, sorry. But anytime for the rest of the week I'm pretty much free.
Alright, Friday then. Does 3pm EST work for you?
Oops, forgot to post. Yes, Friday works.
[ic=Session 5: The Sisters]
When we left our heroes, they had just beaten a couple Fomorians to a pulp. Kegain drops his axe and sits down heavily by the corpse of the slain Fomorian and tries to wipe the blood from his face.
Kegain: ...I told them to go away.
Wyrgan: Well done, Kegain. Let's bring the old lady her donkey.
The broken body of the Fomorian gives a jerk. He coughs, and black blood spills from his mouth. Wyrgan looks over at the dying Fomorian. Kegain turns away his head away, keeping his eyes to the ground. The creature struggles to speak with its dying breaths
Laidir: (winces at the sight) Grisly!
Wyrgan: (walks over to the being. ) Something to say? Spit it out!
The creature fixes its gaze on Kegain, it's eyes widening.
Fomorian: You . . . face . . . Bres . . .
Kegain looks up and frowns at the Fomorian. The fomor falls back. His eyes point vacantly to the sky
Kegain: What did he mean?
Wyrgan: The babbling of a dying monster. Pay it no heed.
Laidir: How is it that you can understand their croaking?
Kegain: I dunno what you're talking about Laidir.. he speaks plain as day.
Wyrgan: Perhaps this place has different effects on different people.
Laidir: No he doesn't. If you can call that a language, it's unlike anything I've heard spoken before
Wyrgan: It could be some ambient enchantment allows us to comprehend the being... perhaps it only works for those of a certain age? Who knows how the vagaries of Annwn work?
Laidir: Alright alright. We should not waste any more time near these dead monsters anyway.
A loud braying alerts you to the donkey, who stands upon the pile of stones the Big Fomorian was working at when you found them. Kegain gets up morosely and stumbles over to the donkey
Kegain: Come on, have to get you back to the old lady.
The Donkey takes a step back. It then bows its head to you.

Laidir: "Come, o donkey, be not afraid! We are friends to you, and like friends we'll keep you safe!"
[ooc][spoiler]11:48 amLaidir: ooc: I use my bardsong to fascinate it
11:48 amSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: that allows a save, correct?
11:49 amLaidir: ooc: DC 10 + 1/2 the bard's level + Charisma modifier
11:49 amNomadic: ooc: I think it's a will save... let's hope the donkey isn't a wise ass
11:50 amLaidir: ooc: harhar
11:50 amWyrgan: ooc: budumcha
11:50 amNomadic: ooc: also sorry that I'm late
11:50 amWyrgan: ooc: we just figured rob was unconscious
11:50 amSeraphine_Harmonium: !roll 1d20+6
11:50 amisobot: 23[/spoiler][/ooc]
The donkey looks amused by your music, but is unmoved. Kegain bends down to pick up his axe and puts it through the loop in his belt. The Donkey takes a step towards Laidir.
[ooc][spoiler]11:51 am*** Nomadic is now known as Robhartach
11:51 amRobhartach: ooc: well probably not unconscious as I woke up last game when you healed me
11:51 amRobhartach: ooc: but I'm back now at any rate11:52 am
11:52 amLaidir: ooc: +6 will save is pretty impressive for a pack animal O.O
11:52 amSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: Nom, so far all that's happened is a dying fomorian said to kegain " You . . . face . . . Bres . . ." and now you guys are trying to get the donkey to come with you
11:52 amKegain: ooc: does wyrgan have speak to animals or something
11:52 amRobhartach: ooc: probably a fey pack animal
11:53 amRobhartach: ooc: what are you guys trying to do to the poor donkey?
11:53 amLaidir: ooc: yeah it could be shapeshifted faerie for all we know
11:53 amKegain: ooc: we need it to come with us to the hag[/spoiler][/ooc]
Laidir slowly reaches for the leash. The Donkey steps back again
[ooc][spoiler]11:54 amKegain: ooc: also, what did wyrgan get off of the fomors?
11:55 amSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: The bronze sword, some strange looking coins, and some pieces of fruit you don't recognize. [/spoiler][/ooc]
Robhartach finally bothers to stand up and walk over
Robhartach: Mind if I? (Turns to the donkey) Hey there fella mind if we take you back to your mum?
[ooc][spoiler]11:55 amRobhartach: ooc: handle animal check
11:55 amRobhartach: !roll 1d20+6
11:55 amisobot: 23[/spoiler][/ooc]
Robhartach reaches out to take the leash slowly. The creature looks aprehensive as Rob approaches
Robhartach: it'll be ok we're just going to take you back to the lady
The Donkey plants his feet. Robhartach scratches the donkey behind the head trying to reassure him. Meanwhile, Wyrgan takes the sword and coins and eyes the fruit. He won't eat any, but he does take a piece and pockets it.
11:58 amWyrgan: ooc: is the sword really heavy? [/spoiler][/ooc]
Robhartach: what's wrong? afraid of her?
The Donkey eyes Wyrgan with interest
Laidir: Hm, if we had soem food to soothe it with, perhaps that would help?
In response, the donkey nudges Laidir's hand with its nose. Wyrgan approaches the donkey, dragging the blade behind him.
Wyrgan: Kegain, take this thing. (Hands the blade to Kegain. )
Kegain: (Looks at it ) Never had a sword before. Alright. (Takes the blade from Wyrgan)
Wyrgan whispers soothing words to the beast in the tongue of the fey. The donkey seems to nod at Wyrgan's words, but then again, maybe he is just going for Wyrgan's pockets. Wyrgan feeds the donkey a piece of the weird fruit. The Donkey eats the fruit hungrily. Wyrgan pets the beast tenderly.
Laidir: I guess it was just hungry.
The donkey swallows the fruit, and looks at Wyrgan cheerfully. Soon, it begins to look at you expectantly. Wyrgan takes the reins gently and leads it back towards the crone they met earlier.
Wyrgan: Come on, we still have to find the damnable fish...
Laidir: I'd rather we just forget about the fish and head home
Wyrgan: Either way, we must move forward, not backward, if Swardhopper's words were true.
Laidir: It seems way too much trouble to be worth pursuing it
[ooc][spoiler]12:05 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: Are you lot heading back to the crone? I know Wyrg said he was.
12:05 pmRobhartach: ooc: I'm assuming we're all going with him
12:05 pmKegain: ooc: yes, if the donkey is done being recalcitrant[/spoiler][/ooc]
Kegain pockets the rest of the weird fruit after looking at it hungrily for several moments
Robhartach: I just want to go home myself but if the fish is the only way for us to find home then so be it
Laidir: we're supposed to find our way if we just follow the path. No need for fishing far as I recall. Although should the creature fall on our hands then by all means, we should seize it and drag it along
You approach the spot where you first encountered the crone. Sure enough, there she is, the ancient woman, sitting upon a rock. When the donkey catches sight of the crone and her bundles, he immediately sets his hind legs and pulls at his traces, braying loudly. The old woman just laughs.
Woman: It's only turnips, Morfran, and you know your burdens. You wouldn't want Gwion to get lonely.
Laidir: Old lady! We have saved your donkey!
Kegain: (Frowns at the donkey) He doesn't seem happy.
Laidir: Guess he doesn't like carrying turnips.
Woman: Morfran's always been ornery. Never liked to pull his weight
The donkey struggles a minute more, then hangs its head and submits. The old woman slings the saddle basket up onto the donkey's back. Morfran grunts as it settles.Wyrgan hands the reins to the old woman.
Woman: Thank you young lads. How can an old woman repay such kindness?
furrows his brows in thought. At this moment something most peculiar occurs: you begin to feel cold flecking your skin. It is snowing
[ooc][spoiler]12:13 pmWyrgan: ooc: should we ask for information, or perhaps leave the reward to her?
12:14 pmWyrgan: ooc: i.e. leave it up to her?
12:14 pmKegain: ooc: hmmm, up to you.
12:14 pmWyrgan: ooc: laidir, rob?
12:14 pmWyrgan: ooc: seems like warm clothes would be good to ask for
12:15 pmKegain: ooc: or a warm place to stay for the night[/spoiler][/ooc]
Laidir: Ah, anything that might warm a traveler in this winter's chill
Woman: I know just the thing! Beyond these woods is a land that is always in wintertime. There you will find the house of my sister Cailleach. Tell her Ceridwen sent you, and owes you a debt of gratitude.
Kegain: (frowns at this) How far is it?
Ceridwen: Not far now. A league at most. Though the land be ever cold, her abode is warm. The perfect shelter.
Wyrgan: Your offer is most gracious. (bows with unusual politeness, in contrast with his usually caustic demeanor)
Laidir: Farewell to you, then. We must be on our way lest we fall ill from the cold. (Also bows)
Ceridwen: Not at all, it is the least I can do to repay the deed you've done me.
Kegain: I guess we should get going then... it *is* cold out. (waves goodbye to the donkey) Bye donkey. Bye Ceridwen.
Robhartach: Yea looks like we have a good hour's walk ahead of us
The Donkey gives you a look of sadness as the distance between you grows. As the lady and her donkey walk off into the distance, fog seems to rise up about their feet, but perhaps it is just the cold coming in.
Kegain: Poor donkey. Did it seem sad to you, Wyrgan? It did to me.
Wyrgan: It did seem a bit uneasy. Perhaps it dislikes its life of toil.
Laidir: Think it would have been happier to be eaten by those monsters?
Kegain: (frowns) Maybe.
Robhartach tries to whistle a merry tune as the walk through the cold
[ooc][spoiler]12:23 pmWyrgan: ooc: can I make a knowledge (planes) or (arcana) check to see if I know anything about the winter-land or Cailleach?

12:25 pmWyrgan: ooc: if not then 12 and 16 for planes
12:25 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: You cannot recall ever having heard of such a "winter land"
12:26 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: The name Cailleach strikes a chord, however
12:28 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: You recall that Cailleach is the name a crone associated with the winter months. A mystical figure of some power. [/spoiler][/ooc]
Robhartach 's whistling is unfortunately subpar, and he stops.
Robhartach: it's too quiet... laidir play us something
Laidir: Sure! (begins fluting a very cheerful, upbeat melody)
Wyrgan: We should be cautious in the home of this Cailleach. She may be dangerous if angered or displeased.
Laidir assumes a jubilant, almost dance-like gait as he continues to walk forth whilst playing his flute. Robhartach feels a bit better with the music and begins to step a bit lighter, almost a skip in his stride. Wyrgan scowls at the insipid frivolity of his companions.
You emerge from the woods overlooking a frozen land, covered with snow. The path before you remains clear, though on either side the snow stands a good 3 feet high. In the distance, you see a stone fortress resembling a square whose sides each extend from the central structure. One or more fires throw an orange cast over the stones and surrounding snow.
Kegain: I wonder if that's Cailleach's house.
Wyrgan: I expect it is. Rather grand.
Kegain: (squints at it) It is pretty big.
Robhartach: well let's go find out
Wyrgan feels a strange sensation stir within him. This castle reminds him distantly of the dark stronghold which haunts his dreams. Robhartach continues along the path now perfectly merry despite his bruised and bloodied body. Wyrgan approaches the castle of Cailleach hurriedly, rubbing his limbs. Laidir picks up a handful of snow as he wades through the white powdery stuff. He rolls it into a snowball, grins, and hurls it at Wyrgan.

The snowball brakes apart in the air, showering kegain with icy particles butcoming nowhere near Wyrgan. Wyrgan dodges aside and shoots a dark look at Laidir, but the jolly mood is somewhat infectious.
Robhartach: Haha! (Seeing the snowball scoops up some of his own, packs it into a ball and tosses it back at Laidir)

Robhartach: Haha, well come on lads lets go check out this castle. It's getting cold
Kegain: Brr.
Laidir: Alright.
Wyrgan continues towards the castle, his scowl returning. Robhartach, as a last measure though scoops up a snowball and tosses it at wyrgan and then makes a dash ahead for the castle

12:41 pmLaidir: ooc: hey we're playign a bunch of kids here, they need some distraction after such gruesome experience
12:42 pmRobhartach: ooc: also I doubt kids would truly grasp the impact of killing someone, especially if that someone wasn't a human but a "beast"
12:42 pmKegain: ooc: well. kegain feels guilty about it. [/spoiler][/ooc]
You approach the castle, upon which is reflected both the cold light of the snow, and the warm light of a fire. A large wooden door lies before you.
[ooc][spoiler]12:42 pmRobhartach approaches the door and peers in
12:42 pmKegain: ooc: I'd imagine its probably closed.
12:42 pmWyrgan: ooc: we're also celtic kids who are being raised to kill people if required
12:42 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: the door is closed. Are you saying you open the door to look in?
12:43 pmWyrgan: ooc: knock first!!
12:43 pmRobhartach: ooc: sorry I read your post as an open door
12:43 pmLaidir: We should knock, even if it's open. It's polite
12:43 pmRobhartach: ooc: not a closed one
12:43 pmRobhartach: ooc: don't know why
12:43 pmRobhartach: ooc: yea I'd knock if it was closed[/spoiler][/ooc]
Kegain comes to a stop. He steps up to the door and hesitates... but then knocks loudly and calls out.
Kegain: Hello?
As Kegain knocks upon the door, and the echoes of it reverberate in the air for several seconds. Then a click follows, and the door opens with a creak. A strange sight greets you. Standing in the doorways, a woman appears before you, youthful and vibrant, with fiery red hair that seems almost to move about her as she stands before you. She is dressed in white and gold, and her long features hold the touch of serenity. About her neck is a gold torc. She is long in arm, leg, and torso, and by rights she should tower over you, yet she slouches, bent over strangely. She is half turned away from you, and offers you her right side as she addresses you.
Wyrgan: (Bows) Ceridwen sent us. She owes us a debt of gratitude.
Kegain lowers his gaze and wrings his hands
Laidir: We ask merely for a warm fireside, to keep away the chill for a while
Woman: And who is it my sister sends to seek shelter at Dun Geivreadh?
Wyrgan: I am Wyrgan mac Nissa.
Laidir: I am Laidir mac Berech. Pleased to meet you, mam!
Kegain: I'm Kegain!..We're... kind of lost.
[ooc][spoiler]12:48 pmWyrgan: ooc: do I know what court this creature belongs to, i.e. seelie or unseelie?
12:48 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: You are not sure which court she belongs to, or if she belongs to a court at all
12:49 pmWyrgan: ooc: gotcha [/spoiler][/ooc]
Cailleach: (Looks to Robhartach) And who are you who come to my door, wounded and silent?
[ooc][spoiler]12:50 pmRobhartach: ooc: oops sorry my window got scrolled up
12:50 pmRobhartach: ooc: was waiting for you guys to say something
12:50 pmRobhartach: ooc: but you already had
12:50 pmRobhartach: ooc: hold on[/spoiler][/ooc]
The woman turns to face you. What you see is anything but ordinary. Though her right side is a work of beauty, youth, even power, her left is aged, worn, and haggard. She, like her sister, is missing her left eye, and the wrinkled gray flesh droops over her cheek. Here, her hair is wispy and white, and her clothing tattered and patched, as though repaired time and again over many years.
[ooc][spoiler]12:51 pmWyrgan: ooc: coooool
12:52 pmRobhartach: ooc: ah ok nevermind guess I won't introduce myself then
12:52 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: You sure, she still awaits your answer . . .
12:53 pmRobhartach: ooc: well it seems like you just continued on without me which is fine[/spoiler][/ooc]
Laidir tries to maintain a smiling demeanor. Kegain 's eyes widen, and he promptly resumes staring at the ground. The silence draws on. Kegain punches Rob in the arm

Cailleach: (looks around at the lot of you ) Is the boy mute?
Wyrgan casts Message and whispers to Cailleach magically.
Wyrgan: (Message) He suffered a blow recently and is a bit woozy. I am the son of the creature known as Gloomheart.
[ooc][spoiler]12:59 pmKegain: ooc: watch her eat you
12:59 pmWyrgan: ooc: taking a bit of a risk I know..

Cailleach fixes her eye on Wyrgan
[ooc][spoiler]1:00 pmRobhartach: ooc: ok back [/spoiler][/ooc]
She looks at him long, and Wyrgan meets her gaze. Wyrgan finds her response whispered in kind into his mind.
Cailleach: (Message) the Son of Gloomheart indeed. Come home to find him have you?
Wyrgan: (Message) In fact I have not - though, if you know of his whereabouts, I would owe you a debt.
Wyrgan moves his lips as he mouths the Message, though he does not speak. Laidir glances at Wyrgan, but does not say anything.
Cailleach: (Message) Who in Annwn does not know his whereabouts?
Wyrgan: (Message) I have never before ventured into Annwn - my mother was human, and I was raised in the human world; perhaps, later, we could discuss the matter in greater privacy.
Cailleach: (To All) First, come in out of the cold. You are welcome to Dun Geivreadh, travelers from Abred.
Kegain nods to her. Wyrgan enters.
Kegain: Thank you, miss. Ma'am... Cailleach.
Laidir: Your hospitality is gracious
Robhartach 's injuries are obviously getting to him as he makes for the door and instead trips over his own feet and falls on his face. He makes a concerted effort to get up. Laidir lends a hand.
Laidir: You alright Rob? Don't tell me your wounds are opening now
Cailleach: Your wounds are grave indeed, boy
Robhartach: (stumbles up and inside) Funny, didn't feel so... bad earlier. (Coughs)
Cailleach: Come with me. You are in need of care.
The lady turns and leads you down a corridor. Kegain glances at Wyrgan, and then follows hesitantly. Robhartach continues mumbling about how he felt fine just a minute ago. Wyrgan follows Kegain and Cailleach. Laidir looks around as he walks along, curious to see the castle from within. With a certain grace she turns on her heel, her gowns flowing and twirling about her as she comes to a stop, facing you. With a slender and youthful right arm, she motions through an archway. Kegain walks through, slowly.
Through the archway, you can see a courtyard. Several braziers burn within, keeping the area free of snow. Kegain smiles and walks over to one, warming his hands over it. In the very center of the courtyard lies a well, some 7 feet across. It is ringed with stones, and a basin rests inside attached to a wynch. It appears large enough to sit in. Wyrgan peers into the well. Laidir joins Kegain by the brazier. Wyrgan wanders back over to Laidir and Kegain.
Kegain: You have a nice castle!
The lady smiles at the large boy. She speaks to Robhartach
Cailleach: Tell me your name, boy? Would you?
Robhartach: Rob
Cailleach: Rob then. Rob, the water in this well holds special properties. It can heal injuries.
Robhartach: (totally out of it at this point) That sounds nice.
Cailleach: Sit in this basin. I will lower you into the well. Bathe yourself in its waters. You wil be healed.
Robhartach does as she says
Laidir: To be lowered into the well? Isn't that dangerous?
Cailleach: I assure you that there is nothing to fear
Robhartach: bath'd be nice. '˜S strange fellin fine just a bit go, now dont feel s fine
Cailleach: The water in the well will heal your injuries
Laidir: I hope it'll heal his head as well. He's sprouting nonsense now
Cailleach: How grave were this boy's injuries? What happened to him?
Laidir: We confronted a couple of nasty brutes that had captured Ceridwen's donkey
Wyrgan: We were fighting Fomorians, seeking to bring your sister's donkey back to her. One of them wounded him.
Kegain nods enthusiastically in agreement
Laidir: We thought him dead for a moment, but Wyrgan was able to heal him a bit.
Cailleach: My Sister asked that of you did she? Never had much care or sense, she.
Wyrgan: We slew them easily enough. Except for Rob we came away fairly unscathed.
[ooc][spoiler]1:37 pmWyrgan: ooc: badass children
[/spoiler][/ooc]
Cailleach: You are lucky, then. Things could very easily have gone much worse for you. Help me get him into the basin, he hardly seems capable of doing it himself, now.
Kegain hurries over and helps lift Rob into the basin. Wyrgan assists.
[ooc][spoiler]1:38 pmKegain: ooc: are we stopping soon, we kind of have CE.. now.
1:39 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: Oh, yeah, In just a minute
1:39 pmWyrgan: ooc: cool, i don't think there's a huge hurry, as kindling is yet to show - LD will be absent for a week or two and isn't with the main party anyway[/spoiler][/ooc]
The boys and Cailleach lift Robhartach into the basin resting within the well. The young-and-old woman then turns a wheel by the well, and the basin begins to lower into the gap in the earth. Lower and lower it goes, down deep, until Rob is just a dark speck. Rob feels the water rising up over his body as he sinks into the well, and begins humming a tune. Laidir peers worriedly intot he well. The aches in Rob's muscles and bones begin to alleviate

Unfortunately it's looking like I won't be available for Cad Goleor this Monday (I should still be available for CE, but may be a smidgen late). If plans change, I'll let you know. Please, feel free to play without me/NPC Wyrgan. I'm sure you'd do a great job with him, Seraphine.

Ok, well if two people can't make it, then there's no point. Do you guys want to reschedule? We could try the Tuesday or Friday again, or find another time.
Either works fine for me.
I will be gone the entire week (not getting back until Saturday the 6th).
Oh, okay. Well, here is what I propose: If Nom is the only one who can't make any time this coming week, he gives me a basic idea of what he wants his character to do and we conduct the game without him.
If anyone else cannot make it, we just postpone for a week.
Assuming we have a game this week, I am going to default to Tuesday unless Ghostman or TMG can't make that day.
Tuesday should work for me.
Robhartach has a mind to find this Old Sorin and remove the sword that is causing him so much pain (basically a continuation of what he was blabbering about last week).
Well, I don't think I will be able to play this Friday, so we should probably just wait until Monday for our regular session. Is that okay with everyone?
Fine by me.
Wyrgan will probably agree with Rob, if only to try and get closer to Nennius.
[ooc]Just realized I had never put this up. Oops.
In other news, game tomorrow, regular time.[/ooc]
[ic=Session 6: Cailleach]
You look down into the well where Rob sits soaking. The dimness of the light down there prevents you seeing much, but you notice wisps of steam rising from the well. Wyrgan squints, intrigued, but distracted: he is impatient to hear of his sire. Kegain peers over the lip of the well, straining to see into the depths.
Robhartach feels the water seep into his skin. It seems to boil around you, yet you are not burned. Instead your muscles relax, flex, and stretch. Your cuts close and the blood washes away. The steam rising from the water enters your nostrils, and seems to swirls about your head, as if clearing out the passageways.
[ooc] [11:25] <Wyrgan> ooc: faerie bacta fluid!
[11:26] <Robhartach> ooc: haha[/ooc]
Robhartach: Oo, feels good
Rob suddenly feels for a moment, totally conscious of the systems of his body. He feels the blood coursing through his veins and the contractions of his muscles, sensing the way they interact with his skeleton, ligaments, and tendons. Then in a moment, his awareness is just as it always was. Robhartach lets out a yawn then suddenly snaps his head up and shakes off the sleepiness with the arrival of the weird sensation. He shudders a little bit.
Robhartach: Um, can I come up now?
Cailleach does not speak; she just turns the wheel, and the chain winds around, pulling the basin back up and out of the well. Rob's body emerges from the well, and the droplets of water seem to slide off his skin.
Kegain: Do you feel better? You look better!
Robhartach: I feel great. That was really weird.
The basin comes to a halt at the top of the well
Laidir: How was the water? Cold?
Wyrgan is impressed, though unsurprised.
Robhartach: It was... erm (tries to describe the feeling of being aware of your entire body but settles instead on something simple) ...different. Hard to explain
Kegain: Hummm.
Cailleach: Those are powerful waters. You should be tip top now
Robhartach: Thank you
Wyrgan idly inspects his fingernails.
Robhartach: Where are we?
Cailleach: This is my home. It is called Dun Geivreadh, the Fortress of Winter
Robhartach: Oh, looks nice

[11:36] <Wyrgan> ooc: interesting, I'm betting Cailleach morphs into her or something
[11:36] <Wyrgan> ooc: but who knows[/ooc]
Cailleach: It is always winter here . . . these days . . . Ever since . . . (She turns half away from you, and you see her youthful side)
Kegain: Since what?
Robhartach: (In time with Kegain) Since what?
Her eye has a faraway look, wistful, distracted, and sad
Cailleach: What? Oh, nothing. It doesn't matter. (Beat) Come, I have food and drink prepared
The woman turns and walks down a corridor, motioning for you to follow her. Wyrgan follows Cailleach. Kegain turns and fixes Rob with a strange look
Robhartach: What?
Kegain shakes his head and trails after Wyrgan. Robhartach shrugs and gets up to follow after them.
Laidir: We're not supposed to eat or drink whilst in this world
Robhartach: (Calling back to Laidir) Well we should at least try and be polite. At least that's what my master always tells me... usually right after a good beating
The woman stops
Cailleach: Oh, yes. Travellers from Abred. I nearly forgot.
Laidir: I guess we can sit by her table, at least

Cailleach: It is true that eating faerie food would be unwise for you
Robhartach looks about with a renewed sense of curiosity as they walk
Cailleach: But I should be able to whip something up that would be safe for you to eat. You must be hungry
Kegain puts his hands to his stomach and nods. Laidir looks around nervously. The lady continues down the hall, and into a room with a circular table, set before a roaring fire. a cauldron on a spit rests just above the flames

Wyrgan: (whispering) If she wished us ill, I would imagine she would not have healed Rob.

Cailleach: (Turning her eye to Laidir) You are training to be a bard, are you not?
Laidir stops on his track before her gaze
Laidir: Yes ma'm
Cailleach: Good. Give us a tune, will you?
[ooc] [11:48] <Wyrgan> ooc: dance monkey! [/ooc]
Laidir clears his throat as Cailleach moves to a small wooden door, opens it, and steps inside. You hear rustling sounds from inside. Kegain takes a seat at the table and rests his head in his arms. Laidir begins plucking his dulcimer, performing an old folk song about a homesick traveler cursed to never be able to find his way home.
Kegain: Hungry...
Wyrgan takes a seat beside Kegain. Cailleach soon begins humming along softly, from the next room. Robhartach seems a bit more energetic and taps both hands on the table in time to the music as he waits. The song starts out melancholy, but suddenly turns cheerful when the traveller's story progresses and the curse is lifted.

Robhartach softly whistles, actually managing a decent tune to accompany the dulcimer. Cailleach too, begins to sing, and her voice rings clear like the tinkling of a bell stretched out over several measures. Laidir departs from the traditional tune when the song is nearing its end, making an attempt on an improvised finishing. Wyrgan broods, lost in his thoughts.

Finally Cailleach emerges, bearing a wooden tray laden with apples, bread and cabbages, laughing merrily. Laidir puts away his dulcimer and sits by the table, rather happy of his own performance. Wyrgan eyes the food a touch uneasily. The contents of this tray look nothing like the fruits you took from the fomorians. Rather, they look quite ordinary. Wyrgan takes one of the pieces of fruit and bites into it. Robhartach, being Robhartach, takes one off the tray and takes a bite
Wyrgan: (swallows) Thank you, milady Cailleach!
Kegain raises his head and inhales the scent of the bread, perking up instantly
Kegain: Thanks!
Laidir watches Rob and Wyrgan curiously, and then grabs food with both hands. The food is delicious, and highly pleasing to empty stomachs. Kegain seizes a loaf and tears into it. Robhartach, remembering his manners, looks at Cailleach.
Robhartach: Thank you this is really wonderful
Cailleach giggles at the display. Wyrgan surreptitiously feeds his centipede familiar some cabbage leaf. Robhartach eats as if he hasn't eaten in a hundred years. Laidir gets a taste of each and every type of foodstuffs available, though he does not eat in excess.
Cailleach: Now tell, me, how is it you come to Annwn, travelers from Abred?
Robhartach tells her about them being sent to fetch the fish and how they wound up going through the doorway.
Wyrgan: We seek a salmon for our druid's ritual. Though, if truth be told, I think my companions would settle for a way back to Abred.
[ooc] [12:04] <Wyrgan> ooc: thought that might happen[/ooc]
Laidir: It was half by accident that we ended up passing into Annwn, to be honest, for the gateway would only permit our entrance, and not our exit.
Cailleach: There are no accidents. You were meant to be here. You have some purpose here before you leave.
Kegain: Right! To find a fish!
Cailleach: (Pause) . . . Perhaps.
Robhartach curses the blasted fish under his breath.
Cailleach: But the Salmon of Knowledge is no mere fish.
Laidir: Do you mean that it could be something else?
Cailleach: I have known many druids in my time, and their commands are never as simple as they seem.
Wyrgan: What can you tell us of the Salmon?
Cailleach: The Salmon of Knowledge is a tricky spirit. He has been killed and eaten more than once, but always returns. He swims the wide sea, and the narrow channels, and goes between the worlds. Those who taste of his flesh gain knowledge of many things
Kegain: Why doesn't he stay dead?
Cailleach: It is the nature of spirits to leave and return. Very few things are truly gone forever.
Kegain: Hum.
Robhartach continues eating
Robhartach: I hope we're not gone forever. I'd rather like to go home
Laidir: If only we'd known that when we first caught him! His pleas to be spared would not have meant much then!
Cailleach: (laughs) Ah yes, a classic trick of his. I am rather surprised he did not offer you a wish!
Wyrgan: Do you know where we could find the Salmon?
Cailleach: He takes many routes, but I wonder . . .
Her eye seems to gain that faraway look again. She seems preoccupied by the thought of something past

Laidir notices something: Even though that side of her face is turned away from the fire, he can see the image of a flame flickering in her eye. Laidir is somewhat startled by this light of flame in her eye, though he isn't sure what to think of it.
Cailleach: (At length) He often consorts with the Sidhe of both courts. It is possible he may be found near one of the Spiral castles. Three great castles lie in the land of Annwn, marking the farthest reaches of the land. Their great towers spiral into the heavens, linking this world with the realms of mortals and gods.
Wyrgan feels himself break out into gooseflesh. Perhaps this journey will take longer than they'd anticipated.
Kegain: But how would we get there? We don't even know where we are...
Cailleach: The path will take you where you need to go. Just stick to the path and you will find your way
Wyrgan: Convenient. Which castle is nearest?
Cailleach: If the Realm of Annwn were a Triangle, you would be mid-way between its bottom points. Caer Sidi is the furthest, but you could seek out both revelrous Caer Fedwyd, or the dismal fortress of Nennius
As she says the last word, she shoots Wyrgan a significant look. Wyrgan meets her gaze.
Laidir: I'd rather not go near the last one mentioned
Kegain: But if that's where the fish is, we have to!
Laidir: No. We don't know for sure that we would
Wyrgan: I will accompany you, Kegain, even if the others will not.
Kegain: Well... we need the fish, right? I guess we just have to check every castle until we find it!
Robhartach: Why can't we just follow the path? (swallows)
The lady gets her faraway look again, and the next words just seem to spill out
Cailleach: Oh, Whittlegren, you had such promise!
Kegain: Whittlegren?
Cailleach: (After a moment) King Whittlegren of the Seelie Sidhe. His rule should have been the greatest ever known. But he defered his power and authority to those who did not deserve it.
Kegain: A King wouldn't just abandon his people! (Kegain shakes his head) There must have been a reason.
Cailleach: You mistake me.
Kegain: Oh?
Cailleach: Have you heard the story of Old Sorin?
[ooc] [12:45] <Kegain> ooc: would that be likely?
[12:46] <Wyrgan> ooc: we heard it in a song
[12:46] <Wyrgan> ooc: as we left the village
[12:46] <Seraphine_Harmonium> ooc: You heard the beginning of it in a song[/ooc]
Wyrgan: Yes. Some of it, anyway.
Cailleach: Dear Laidir, would you do the honors? Sing us the Song of Sorin.
Laidir: I will do my best
Laidir takes again his dulcimer, plucking it focusedly. Robhartach sits quietly listening to the whole thing a bit lost.
Laidir: "Listen, my child, and heed this advice:
If you meet with Old Sorin, you needn't think twice.
Just bid him good morrow and turn right around,
For if you should cross him you'll never be found. . . "
[ooc] [12:53] <Seraphine_Harmonium> ooc: Do you want to play it that you know the story, or that all you know is the bit you heard?
[12:54] <Laidir> ooc: probably only the beginning
[12:54] <Seraphine_Harmonium> ooc: ok[/ooc]
Laidir's song trails off.
Cailleach: Oh, come now, you've barely touched on it.
Laidir: That is because I have not all the words
Cailleach: Oh very well, I will tell the story
'A hulk of a monster was Sean Sorinee;
His mouth full of fangs was a terror to see.
He'd chew you right up just as quick as can be
And then spit you back out o'er the lip of the sea.
None who confront him are evermore free
From the grasp of the monster's fell, cruel tyranny.
The bravest that faced him did fall hon'rably'"
The lesser have died while away they did flee.
Wise old King Whittlegren gave a decree:
Condemn the old giant and plotted did he
To ring him a ring to cage Old Sorinee,
So they rode out next morrow all armed for sortie.
King Whittlegren's champion was called Whisperknee,
Who did hail from the halls of the white old Birch Tree.
He was brave and was clever as fitted a sidhe,
And he thumped on his shield and called 'Sean Sorinee!'
'O villain, O Monster, I face you!' He cried.
And his courage was bolstered by those at his side.
The Giant roared loud and the men he espied
And his visage was more than the men could abide.
The bout with his foe was a matter of pride.
'I'll beat you and cross you' once more he did chide.
Old Sorin reared up his frothy-mouthed hide
And in battle the enemies most fiercely vied.
Whisperknee's shield with Sor's Club did collide,
And on Old Sorin's back did Whisperknee ride.
With his sword in Sor's mouth the monster he tried,
And in old Sorin's mouth brave Whisperknee died.
But Whisperknee's blade left its mark on the beast
And Old Sorin will never forget the deceased.
The blade that did sting him still rests in his pate,
And irked him and pained him each time that he ate.
Still it torments him each day and each night.
It stings him and bleeds him with each hungry bite
While his bellowing pains fill the fair folk with fright,
And he always is seeking an end to his plight.'
The young-old woman concludes her tale, and looks at the boys. Robhartach claps. Wyrgan rolls his eyes at Rob but claps nonetheless. Kegain rests his head on his own left shoulder
Kegain: But what happened to the King?
Robhartach: Seems like someone should put the old beast out of his misery, not right to make a creature suffer. Even a monster.
Laidir: I shall have to learn this song, and learn it well. I thank you for gracing our ears with it
Robhartach: Or at least remove the sword
Cailleach: That is the trouble, on both counts. The Sword was never truly Whisperknee's. A sword is a symbol of power and authority. When I gave that sword to Whittlegren, it was a symbol of his Sovereignty, but he placed it in the hands of Whisperknee, choosing to let his champion face the monster instead. The Sword was not his to command, and now it is lost in the mouth of Old Sorin, and Whittlegren is but a feeble king
Robhartach: And what about you? You said that it was always winter here now. Is that related?
Kegain: Oh, well.. if Whisperknee couldn't beat Old Sorin, I guess he'll never get that sword back. Whittlegren won't, I mean.
Robhartach looks at Kegain
Cailleach: He did not give up his throne, but he gave up his rights to that throne. Now the land of Annwn rejects him. The land rebels, and winter comes when it should be midsummer
Robhartach: Pff! I bet I could get it back.
Wyrgan shoots Rob a disdainful glance.
Wyrgan: Really, Robhartach.
Laidir: You should be careful how you brag whilst in here, Rob. Someone might call you on those words.
Robhartach: How do you all expect to get anything done if you let fear get in the way of things?
Wyrgan: This coming from the fellow who nearly got killed a few hours ago by a comparatively small fomorian...
Robhartach: Pff! I just got roughed up a bit. I'm fine!
Laidir: Oh, now it's "roughed up", is it?
Robhartach: Well I'm fine now aren't I? I don't look dead to me.
Laidir: You were pretty close to dead right after the battle far as I recall
Robhartach: (waves Laidir off) besides master says a little blood loss and scarring is good, builds character.
Wyrgan: If it weren't for my talents grave-worms would be feasting on your entrails by now.
Laidir: Well, if you feel like taking on monsters, go right ahead. But do the rest of us a favour and go at it alone.
Cailleach: I am not my sister, and could not advise you to seek out Old Sorin. However, if the sword could be retrieved . . .
Wyrgan: ...if the sword could be retrieved?
Cailleach: If the sword were retrieved I could put an end to the unseasonable winter. I could bestow the sword on one who would understand what it means to carry it
Robhartach: You're all a bunch a scared whelps
Wyrgan: Getting the sword and killing Old Sorin are two different things.
[ooc] [13:17] <Wyrgan> ooc: sword is in his mouth, right?
[13:18] <Seraphine> ooc: yes [/ooc]
Robhartach: Death don't scare me. Besides I don't even think we'd have to kill him. I bet he'd be happy to be rid of the sword if only someone was brave enough to remove it for him. Ain't right to leave a beast suffering like that.
Wyrgan: Agreed, Rob. One might prop his mouth open while he slumbered and wrench the blade free. Frankly I'd imagine he'd be gladly rid of it.
Wyrgan is slightly surprised to be agreeing with Rob...
Laidir: Glad he might be, but wish you eat you all the same.
Robhartach: I'd like to see him try. Where is this Old Sorin anyhow?
Kegain: (Shakes his head) I don't think going anywhere near a giant is a very good idea.
Robhartach: I think it'd be hard to avoid that considering you're pretty giant yourself. You're always near a giant
Wyrgan: Where is Sorin anyway?
Cailleach: Near to the dismal fortress, Old Sorin stretches his arm out to the sea
Kegain frowns down at Rob
Robhartach: Don't be so sour
Laidir: I can hardly believe it myself, but Kegain here is looking smarter than the two of you put together
Wyrgan: You have to admit, Laidir, it would make a good song - bold young heroes from Abred setting things in Annwn aright, stealing the magical sword from the giant's slavering maw...
Wyrgan wants to delay returning to Abred as long as possible - and he wants to get to Nennius.
Robhartach: That's the spirit Wyrgan!
Laidir: Aye, a fine tale and a great song. Nothing I'd risk approaching Old Sorin for.
Robhartach: Besides, she said that we're here for a reason. Maybe this is our reason. Maybe we're supposed to set things right. Maybe that's the only way to get home.
Laidir: Maybe. Or maybe it's something entirely different.
Wyrgan: Well, Laidir, you can watch while we do all the heroics, and sing about it later.
Wyrgan is now embracing Rob's thoroughly insane plan.
Kegain: Ma would be cross if she heard I was even thinking about fighting a giant..
[ooc] [13:26] <Robhartach> ooc: I love how wyrgan is being an underhanded bastard using rob's own love of honor to get what he wants
[13:26] <Robhartach> ooc: very sociopathic :) [/ooc]
Laidir: Oh, I won't be watching. But if you do go there and return bearing the sword, I'll sing of your valour.
Robhartach: (To Kegain) Well your ma isn't here
Wyrgan: I think it's a bit late to be worrying about making your mother cross, Kegain.
Cailleach: Do you truly intend to seek out Old Sorin?
Kegain: (shakes his head) I'm too tired to think about giants and swords'¦ I need to sleep.
Laidir: Not me. But it seems these two have been overcome by madness.
Robhartach: T'aint madness, just a stout heart. Perhaps, though, we'll sleep on it.
Laidir: With any luck, sleep will cure your head which the bath in the well obviously didn't.
Wyrgan: Sleep might be wise. Thank you again for the meal
Cailleach: I insist on it. The rules of hospitality must be obeyed.

Kegain follows her sleepily. Robhartach follows after her. Wyrgan follows, though once the others are asleep he will creep from his bed, to have further words with Cailleach if he can. Robhartach creeps from his bed afterwards but finds a quiet place to practice his club and shield stances; Rob is still feeling energetic from the renewing water of the well.

[ic=Session 7: Dun Geivreadh]
The castle is dark with the night. Only a few torches throw their cast of light over the stones. Wyrgan creeps through the passages quietly, in search of the strange creature who has taken them in. The passageways seem each to lead to a tower at the corner of the castle, each with a large room in the ground floor. From your room, the passageways lead to the east tower or the south tower first. You hear a soft song echoing through the chambers and the halls. It appears she is awake, but you cannot discern her location. Wyrgan begins at the ground floor of the nearest tower.

Wyrgan moves towards the east tower. You begin to feel a draft of cold air as you approach. Wyrgan presses onwards, shivering slightly in the cool night air. The tower itself has a large opening in the stone work, acting as a window. Moonlight shines on the stones of the empty room. What appears to be a whirligig rests on the sill, spinning in the wind. Wyrgan looks out over Annwn. Out the great arched window, you can see the vast plains of the Otherworld. Snow covers the land as far as the forests, but you can see storm clouds hovering over the landscape in the distance.
[ooc][spoiler]11:08 amWyrgan: ooc: do I still hear the singing, as loudly as before?[/spoiler] [/ooc]
The song seems somewhat softer now, but its notes seem to ring like crystal. Wyrgan examines the whirligig before passing to another level of the tower, still seeking Cailleach. The whirligig appears to be of a design, where four arms overlap each other in a kind of squared-spiral, with four arms reaching out on the edges of the square. It appears to be made of corn husks, that have been interwoven
[ooc][spoiler]11:12 amWyrgan: ooc: cool, and strange... not going to risk stealing it though[/spoiler]
[/ooc]
Wyrgan blows on the whirligig and moves on. Up the stones of the staircase, you begin to hear a tinkling noise, and find a set of silver chimes blowing in the wind through another arched window. The air seems somewhat colder out here. It is uncomfortable, and you feel the need to clutch at your sides, your teeth chattering. Wyrgan examines the chimes. The chimes seem to be made of silver. The main bell is a ewe, and the tinkling chimes are the babes reaching up to their mother for milk
Wyrgan: (mutters to himself) Miladay Cailleach, where are you?
Wyrgan hurries to another level, trying to get out of the cold.
[ooc][spoiler]11:18 amSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: up or down?

You emerge atop the tower, standing among its crenelation. You can see far from up here, but it is even colder up here. The wind seems to swirl about you. Wyrgan looks for a light in any of the other towers - or any other sign of where Cailleach might be. Overlooking the castle, you see that its configuration reminds you of the whirligig. You can see nothing but stones in the north. A small window in the west tower shows you a glint of something you can't make out from here. The south tower glows with the light of fire. Wyrgan heads for the south tower and the firelight. As you descend from the East Tower, you feel the cold leaving you. Wyrgan rubs his limbs. As you reach the ground level and head towards the south tower, you feel the warmth increasing with each step. The music you heard from before seems to grow louder as you approach. The voice begins to trail off, but you can make out the sound of a harp.
[ooc][spoiler]11:25 amWyrgan: ooc: perhaps a good sign... [/spoiler][/ooc]

Cailleach: You put him in danger far too often.
Voice: If I hadn't done it, would they ever have found the place?
Cailleach: If they were meant to, they would find it. Remember the path.
Voice: What's the harm in giving them a little push? Can't have them wandering about.

Wyrgan retreats a few steps and then approaches without stealth. In the far bedroom, Kegain snores loudly and shifts in his sleep.
Cailleach: That is how they find -- Wyrgan! (Turns as she hears your approach) What are you doing out of bed, Wyrgan? (Shows a look of concern)
Wyrgan: Milady Caileach - I'm sorry to disturb you. I was hoping to converse with you concerning my father. I did not wish to speak of him before the others - they are not privy to the details of my parentage.
Cailleach: I must warn you, Wyrgan, Gloomheart has no reputation for warmth of character.
Wyrgan: He is my sire nonetheless; I wish to meet him.
Cailleach: You are not the first offspring of Gloomheart, and he has treated others with disdain. I would not expect him to embrace you.
Wyrgan: I do not expect such. I only wish to meet him, at least once. Perhaps I will impress him more than his other progeny.
Cailleach: The road to him is no easy one. The path is fraught with dangers, some of which may be beyond you. It will take all of your wit and bravery. And with the ever advancing winter, it may take more than that. Tell me, what do you hope to gain by meeting Gloomheart?
Wyrgan: (Considers the question) My father sent me this tutor, to school me in the art of witchcraft. (reveals his familiar) I had hoped that he might share with me other secrets, perhaps even take me into his household. I weary of Abred. If what you say is true, he may be disinclined to grant these wishes. Still, it will not hurt to try; and, in any case, he is my sire. His blood flows through my veins. I beg you, Milady, tell me where he dwells. I may not start on that path tomorrow or even the next day, but I would know his whereabouts.
Cailleach: The Unseelie Court is concerned with one thing: power. If you seek acceptance there, you will need to prove your power. I do not often concern myself in the bickering of courts, but if you seek Nennius, I cannot help you.
Wyrgan: Indeed. I will consider this carefully. How best would you recommend I prove my power?
Cailleach: Power is a funny thing. Those who seek it most, know it least well, in seeking to exert it over others
Wyrgan: So my father is at this Nennius?
Cailleach: A Sidhe of some exertion is he. Many would call him powerful. At the castle of Nennius he can often be found, cracking the whip.
[ooc][spoiler]11:59 amWyrgan: ooc: heh I wonder how the unseelie court would react if I gave them the sword lodged in old sorin's mouth[/spoiler][/ooc]
Wyrgan: I see. I thank you for this information, milady, and for your words of wisdom. What can I do to repay you for them?
Cailleach: When you learn the true meaning of power, you will have repaid me. Until then, light a candle for me when you feel the darkness surround you.
[ooc][spoiler]12:04 pmWyrgan: ooc: sorry to have held up the main game guys[/spoiler][/ooc]
Wyrgan: I shall. Thank you again for your hospitality. Good evening to you, milady Cailleach.
Cailleach: Now off to bed, child. I have no more to speak on this.
Wyrgan bows and returns to bed.
[ooc][spoiler]12:05 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: Nom still isn't here, but he warned me he might not be up to it.

You each awake to find a tall glass of milk beside your beds, and an apple each
[ooc][spoiler]12:08 pmWyrgan: ooc: Abred apples?
12:09 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: They seem to be, yes.[/spoiler][/ooc]
Wyrgan drinks the milk and eats the apple, then goes to join his companions. Laidir sets to enjoy the served breakfast with gusto. Kegain yawns and stretches.
Kegain: Oh, apples! (picks up an apple and takes a big bite) How did everyone sleep?
Wyrgan: Very well, thank you Kegain.
Laidir: The bedding was comfortable.
Robhartach snores loudly.
Kegain: I slept like a log!
Wyrgan goes to wake Rob.
Laidir: No wonder he's sleepy, after being wounded and sick.
Robhartach: (shakes awake) Wuh? What time is it?
Wyrgan: It's morning. Come, we have a salmon and a sword to find. Eat your apple and pull on your boots.
Robhartach: Right! Can't let that poor creature suffer!
Kegain crunches the core, and pulls his boots on. Wyrgan has adopted an imperious tone... if he is to prove his power, he must act the part.
Kegain: Sword? The one in the old giant's mouth? (Hesitates) ...It didn't sound very safe.
Wyrgan: Yes, Kegain. Don't you wish to repay Cailleach for her kindness?
Laidir: Still thinking about going after that? An overnight's sleep didn't clear your head, I see.
Rob grabs his shield and club before slipping on his boots, and grabbing the apple with his shield-hand. Laidir shakes his head disapprovingly
Kegain: Of course! But... well'¦ I guess if that's what we have to do...
Wyrgan: I had not taken you for a craven, Kegain.
Robhartach: (mumbles through his food) Aww, c'mon guys!
Laidir: (snorts) Stop messing with the big one's head. That's just low you know
Kegain: Ma says that if the tree's too tall, it's best to let it be.
Laidir: Kegain, we certainly don't need to do anything about the giant to repay for lady Cailleach's kindness. Wyrgan is just trying to confuse you.
Kegain furrows his brows.
Robhartach: You're not a coward, are you Kegain?
Wyrgan: Do as you will, but let us leave this place. None of our goals can be met by lingering here.
Laidir: We must leave, alright.
Robhartach: It will be a heroic adventure! You don't want the songs to say you stayed behind do you?
Kegain: No! Never! But there's a difference between being a coward.. and knowing when you can't do something. (shakes his head)
Laidir: Personally, I don't really care.
Kegain: But Wyrgan's right... I guess it's time to go.
Laidir: I can always make my own songs, after all... But we ought to say farewells to the good lady first!
You all hear a gentle knock at the door.
Wyrgan: Come in.
The door opens, and Cailleach steps inside.
Cailleach: Good, I see you boys are all up and about.
Wyrgan: Good morning, milady Cailleach.
Laidir: Ah, good mornign to you, m'lady.
Cailleach: Good morning indeed to you.
Kegain: Morning! (smiles widely) Thanks for the apples! And the milk!
Cailleach: No thanks are needed, Kegain. I am you host, it is my duty to provide for those I watch over.
Laidir: These freshesments were delicious. We appreciate the gesture. A fine host you have been to us. I will make it a point to speak well of your hospitality.
[ooc][spoiler]12:24 pmWyrgan: ooc: did we ever actually find out where old sorin was?
12:26 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: Old Sorin's home is by a river *near* to Nennius[/spoiler][/ooc]
Cailleach: I am afraid the weather has not improved terribly. Some days we have blizzards, some days merely sprinkles.
Kegain: Oh.. is it a bad time for traveling here?
Laidir: We can hardly spare much time just sitting around waiting for weather to improve.
Cailleach: It is always a bad time for traveling, since the sword was lost. There is nothing for that until the sword is retrieved. The path is kept clean enough, but the elements, and the other dangers here make travel risky.
Laidir: Perhaps we should look for some means to ease the travel then?
Wyrgan: You mean like retrieving the sword? (fixes Laidir with an exasperated look).
Laidir: Naw. You'd have to travel far first just to get to the sword in thefirst place. And in any case, it's a fool's errand.
Kegain: Wait! The sword is making it so cold?
Cailleach: The Sword is displaced. When it is in the hands of someone worthy of it, the Summer will return
Kegain: But we have to get it then! ..somehow. It's not right that it's always winter.
Wyrgan: Well, let us strike out for the castle closest to Sorin, and we'll see what we can do. If retrieving the sword is impossible, we will at least be able to seek the salmon at the castle. Unless you've come up with some brilliant plan of your own, Laidir?
Laidir: Had we some warm clothes, some furs maybe, then surely we could withstand the cold and the rain much better.
Cailleach: I do not wish to lead you towards danger, but you must know that Annwn and Abred are linked. If the unnatural winters here remain unchecked, they will extend their grasp to Abred as well.
Wyrgan: Well that doesn't sound good. Furs would be wise, however. Do you know where we might procure some, milady?
Cailleach: There is a house some way down the path that belongs to an old woodsman. He has been known to help travelers in the past, but he will demand payment. He will ask a service of you. What that service is I cannot say.
Wyrgan: Sounds like a likely enough place to begin. (Pointedly)Would you agree, Laidir?
Laidir: It should be worth hearing it from him then.
Kegain: Hummm. Well, as long as it's fair.
Cailleach: Seek you the huntsman called Herne.
Wyrgan: (nods).Shall we depart then?
Laidir: We should make our leave. Let us not waste the hours of daylight.
Kegain: (awkwardly bows to Cailleach) We'll always remember your hospitality!
Laidir: M'lady Cailleach. It has been a pleasure to stay in your fair home.
Cailleach: If ever need or desire should lead you, seek out Dun Geivreadh. Bright blessings on your journey!
Wyrgan bows as well and sets out along the path.Laidir bows and makes his leave of the castle. Robhartach bows to the lady and then steps with purpose along the path. The golden outline of the sun glows through the heavy clouds. Snow falls in flecks along the path. The road stretches out in two directions, neither of which is the way you came. One leads to the east, towards Caer Fedwyd, and on leads west, towards Sorin and Nennius. Wyrgan heads decisively west before Laidir or anyone else can counsel otherwise. Kegain plods along behind Wyrgan. Robhartach heads west with Wyrgan and Kegain. Laidir goes the other way. Kegain stops and turns around
Kegain: Laidir! Where are you going?
Wyrgan: (Yells back at Laidir)Do you really want to wander Annwn alone?
Laidir: I'd rather so than follow you on that doomed quest
Robhartach: It's not doomed!
[ooc][spoiler]12:52 pmWyrgan: ooc: is the woodsman's hut visible at all???
12:53 pmSeraphine_Harmonium: ooc: It is not visible from here, no.[/spoiler][/ooc]
Laidir: If you are so set in prying a sword out of a giant's mouth, then by all means do so, but I'll have no hand in that business.
Kegain: Well! If we can't do it.. then we won't! But the fish could be this way too, remember?
Wyrgan: Very well. You need not help us, but for safety's sake, surely we should travel together?
Laidir: far as I recall, there is no rule that you must follow the path in particular direction. I figure that I'll find what I seek going this way just as well.
Wyrgan: Do you think the druid will be pleased if you return without us? If you abandon us here? You're the oldest, you have to look out for us.
[ooc][spoiler]12:54 pmWyrgan: ooc: man i am a brat.[/spoiler][/ooc]
Laidir: I think the druid's going to be pretty displeased no matter what, by now
Wyrgan: Not if we return with the salmon and, incidentally, prevent eternal winter from spilling out of Annwn and desolating Abred.
Robhartach: (indicating Kegain) Are you going to make us carry you, Laidir?
Kegain: Come on Laidir! I'd worry about you!
Laidir: You should worry less about me Kegain, and instead worry about getting back to your ma. Perhaps I'll find the damn salmon myself while I'm at it.
[ooc][spoiler]12:58 pmWyrgan: ooc: bit of an impasse![/spoiler] [/ooc]
The wind blows, and cold snow stings your faces.
Laidir: Well, can't stay here all day wasting my time talking to you. So long, friends.
Robhartach: The huntsman is this way! You'll freeze without some warm clothing!
Wyrgan: Laidir! Come with us!
Laidir heads east along the path. Wyrgan casts a spell of Command

Laidir: What are you trying to do to me?!?
Wyrgan: You have seen now what I can do. Now, come with us.
Kegain looks back and forth between Wyrgan and Laidir, confusion writ upon his face
[ooc][spoiler]1:05 pmWyrgan: ooc: totally bluffing... that was my only use of Command [/spoiler][/ooc]
Laidir: Do not think me unfamiliar with the art of glamers, for I have learned of such things as part of my training
Wyrgan curls his lip like a wild beast. The younger boy's eyes glint with annoyance at such defiance.
Wyrgan: Come now, you do not need to participate in the retrieval of the sword.
Robhartach: Come on guys! Stop standing around! We have to keep moving if we want to get back home!
Laidir: Perhaps I should let you have some taste of your own trickery. For I think you'd do well to learn not to mess with your fellows with such ways
[ooc][spoiler]1:07 pmWyrgan: ooc oh gawd i'm about to get pwned[/spoiler] [/ooc]
Kegain: You two stop fighting! We have to work together! The Elder said so!
Robhartach: There is a poor creature that needs our help, a fish that needs to be paid back for tricking us, and a Song about it that YOU need to compose Laidir!
Kegain plants his hands on his hips and glares at Wyrgan and Laidir in turn. Laidir lets out an ululation, like the sound of a bird's singing.

Laidir: Perhaps I'll get a chance to return the favour. Some day.
Robhartach: The more I'm here the more I feel like we should do as little hurt as possible. These fey don't seem like the sort to forgive or forget.
Laidir: There's a point in that. Who knows what allies that winter sprite had, that might've come after us
Kegain: Well it can't be wrong to defend ourselves!
Robhartach: Certainly not
Kegain: Not like it gave us a choice...
Laidir: Anyway, we better find the woodsman's hut. The chill is getting bad here.

Laidir: Better to look for the house first. We'll find firewood in the forest if not the cabin.
You reach the woods, stumbling and shivering, but intact. The tree canopy provides some shelter from the wind, and the snow is less thick on the ground in here. Robhartach goes about looking around for tinder and wood. Laidir presses on forward, hoping to catch sight of the house

While much of the wood is wet from the snow, you find some sizable fallen branches at the edges of the path that are suitable. They are enough to make a small and short-lived fire. Not enough to last you long, but perhaps enough to get over the damage the cold has done so far. You can see more viable branches, but these lie further in. You could not fetch these without leaving the path.
Robhartach: We'll continue on for a few but if we don't find anything I'm lighting us a fire

Though it does not come on you quite so quickly in the woods, the cold does slowly creep into you. There are no signs of a hut as far as you can see. The path does bend at the edge of your vision, however. Robhartach stops. Kegain tilts his head to the side
Kegain: Should we keep going?
Robhartach: ok I think its time to stop
Laidir: This wood is pretty large
Robhartach: it might be around the corner, it might be a long hike in. And I'm freezing.
Laidir: It could take long to find the cabin
Robhartach sets down the bundle of wood and works about making a small fire
[ooc][spoiler]1:42 pm Robhartach: ooc: gonna take 20 on the fire[/spoiler][/ooc]
Robhartach: laidir, kegain see if you can find us some more wood

The wood takes long to catch fire, but ultimately you get a small blaze going. Robhartach sets about keeping the fire going, adding some of the wetter wood onto it to dry and light itself with time. It sounds as if we are going to have to find a new time to play, seeing as the school year is starting, and people have class. I am calling on everyone to present their schedules anew, so that we can find another time in which to play.
I am currently free:
Monday: All day
Tuesday -Friday: Until 8 pm EST
Saturday & Sunday: Not available
Might be able to swing Thursday or Friday, either before 4 at some point or after 5.
Thursdays after 5:30 EST or before 2 EST I am available and Fridays either after 6:30 EST or before 4 EST.
I'm also available all day Tuesdays.
As it looks right now for me, Mondays and Tuesdays will be bad for any game that runs past 5 EST. Wednesdays I should be available from 3 EST on, and Thursdays from 4 EST on. Fridays is taken up by the CE game, and I really don't have time for anything before that one.
Ghostman, I *think* we'd more or less settled on Wednesday for CE - you affirmed that would be OK in the Character Creation thread.
Damn, scheduling is tough...
Alright, well, I will look at the schedules and see what we've got. Regardless, there will NOT be a game tomorrow, in case anyone thought otherwise.
So, any word on when the game will be?
Looks like either Thursdays or Fridays. Ghostman seemed concerned about CE being on Fridays, so just to be crystal clear, is that taking place on Fridays or not?
Right now, the only times that appear to work, unless I missed a conflict, or a new one has come up, are
THUR: 6pm EST (3pm PST)-8pm EST (5pm PST)
FRI: 12pm EST (9 am PST)-4pm EST (1pm PST)
&
FRI: 7pm EST (4pm PST)-8pm EST (5pm PST)
I am currently leaning towards Thursdays as the more comfortable time slot.
CE is on Wednesday.
Thursday sounds good to me, but any of those times do indeed work at my end.
Good to know.
Anyone opposed to Thursday?
Thursday will make it rough for me as that time literally runs right up against my work period but I can try. I'll basically be leaving the game and running off immediately to get ready for work. It's a possibility though so I won't say no if it's the best time for everyone else.
The time for Thursdays is way too late for me, ditto with the later Friday one. I could make the earlier Friday game tho.

Aye, earlier is better for me.
Well, that settles it then. The earlier of the times on Friday it is.
Hey, sorry, won't be able to make the game tomorrow, as at our play time I will be on my way back home for Thanksgiving.

As much as I want to have a game, this might be for the best. I am in a production of Pirates of Penzance which opens tomorrow, and tonight they might keep me late, which could result in my being absolutely exhausted and either not waking up at all, or being really out of it for game time.
Cool - I have a ton of marking to do anyway. Did I miss a session last week?
No. We're still in the forest preparing to pass through the barrows.
