Title: Who else is playing Terraria?
Post by: Lmns Crn on July 07, 2011, 01:56:29 PM
I picked it up this week. It's on sale for $7.50, but it's easily worth thrice that. I am having a ton of fun with it.

So who else is playing? (Alternately: who isn't playing, but might be interested in starting out, and might want some pretty good gear to start off with?)

I played it for awhile but got bored. Once you hit the endgame there isn't much replay value.

I tried to get my friend to play Minecraft. He got Terraria instead...I definitely dig the oldschool sidescroller feel of it. I watched a few youtube videos of it and it looked pretty cool...but I think I will stick with MC simply for the replay value and future updates...

Sarisa-Terraria also has on-going updates.

That being said; I looked at Terraria (viewed several hours of video footage), but I did not buy it. I foresee myself getting bored of it much faster. I am more interested in building than in fighting constant battles. The battles look like they get boring quite fast.

If they emphasized the construction aspects, I might be more interested in it. Whereas Minecraft focuses on building; Terraria focuses on survival. I dislike that. (That being said, I am a bit concerned about the coming 1.8 Minecraft Update which is said to focus more on requiring exploration. I already have too much difficulty getting iron that I need; and I've only mined diamond a few times [Yes, I know the ideal shaft system once one is deep and I am familiar with the 4 to 16 rule for finding diamonds, but being underground is too dangerous for me in caverns. I die far too much to lava and monsters- underground is too scary]). Of the features revealed for 1.8 I am generally happy (the exception being with villages :( I like my lonely world. I know notch always planned villages, but I think they take away from the game's charming isolation--not having to deal with other people :)); but I am concerned about some statements he made regarding how he is going to make the game more 'survival' oriented. ... Since I find it nearly impossible to mine any materials I die almost constantly in the game already. The wall-crawling spiders were another reason for me to turn on peaceful...who knows what will happen after 1.8. The game is far, far, more frightening than Dead Space.

Also, if you note with the people recording Terraria-- they put out far fewer videos than Minecraft people do. It seems to have a shorter shelf life.

Nevertheless, it looks like one can get a good 20-40 hours out of the game; therefore, it does give one her money's worth.

Notch actually has announced that he has finished a working creative mode for the game so if you just want to build in peace you can :)

Well that's the thing- I like playing with the monsters- it gives a sense of challenge and I have to build to accommodate them; but that slows me down a lot in building. My constructions look... awkward and slapdash to say the least.

Anyways, creative mode (sans the fly mod, infinite items, etc.) is already basically available through the "peaceful" option...but it could be useful for avoiding death in lava, perhaps?

I don't play either Minecraft or Terraria, but IMO Minecraft looks a lot... uglier. I can't stand all the blocky stuff, but the sidescroller look of Terraria is to me far more palatable.

That being said, I don't have a broken penny to spare right now, so I'm not playing anything, but watching TotalBiscuit & Jesse Cox's series of videos playing Terraria. And let me tell you, it's not just another "Let's play". The whole thing that brings me to their series is not Terraria but the humour.

I'm not sure exactly what it's going to be as Notch hasn't elaborated but I think it is going to be a bit more than peaceful mode + infinite items but we'll see. The point is if you're concerned about the adventure update you have something else coming out alongside it that will keep the aspects that you're more interested in.
