Title: Help me in my noble quest!
Post by: LoA on July 17, 2011, 06:24:27 AM
Sorry for my absence in the forum, I've just been traveling alot, and haven't had time to really do much on the computer, so I'm glad to be back.

So onto my noble quest! So if there's one thing everybody should know about me, it's that i am a DIE HARD, NO CRAP DEALIN, CARTOON GEEK. No joking. Like how normal people get off on politics, I get off on the quality and status quo of animated cartoons, and seriously consider the decline of cartoon network, and disney to be the end of the world as we know it.

To put it simply, I am probably going to have children someday, and i will not let them be raised on the attrocity that is modern, mainstream cartoons, and i will raise them on quality cartoons,

Too put this more simply, I've been collecting cartoons for my future kids, and so far i've got the 2 Darkwing duck sets, the complete PPG's series (shut up), most Miyazaki films, a few Don Bluth movies, The Iron Giant, Treasure Planet, a few Disney classics, and some more that i can't recall, cont. next post

But now I'm running out of stuff from my childhood and am now going to start taking risks and checking out cartoons i'm not familiar with. So here's my request. If i see a series that grabs my attention, will you guys help me and give input? First up is the Super mario bros super show! i was born after the show ended, so is it worth checking out? Thanks!

I don't know about Super Mario Bros Super Show, but you should definitely give them the gift of Reboot.

David the Gnome from Nickelodeon...used to watch that all the time when I was a kid. I don't remember if it was good or not but my parents seemed to think it was OK. Little Nemo (in Slumberland?)was a good show? or movie? But it was a better NES game.

TaleSpin was probably my all time favorite show when I was a kid. I remember watching Duck Tales but not liking it as much. The old X-Men cartoons from the 90's seemed really cool when I was a kid but were probably cheesy.

Toad Patrol: Though it only went for two seasons, I thought it was awesome and actually really unique. If anyone actually watched this show I'd be fairly surprised; it pretty much went under the radar.

Avatar the Last Airbender: :D (not very old, but amazing nonetheless)

Samurai Jack: The artistic style of animation was incredible.

Those are just off the top of my head.

David the Gnome: SO GLAD I'm not the only one that remembers this one! I torrented the entire series a few months ago, and it still stands up. The plots are short and simple, but good. Very environmentally focused, so it could be an interesting tie-in with Captain Planet.

Didn't know that Little Nemo was a cartoon, but I do know that it used to be a brilliant</Tennent> newspaper comic, with all sort of experimental techniques that still are underutilized to this day. If it was a cartoon, and one that did the comic any justice, I'd love to see it.

Talespin and Ducktales-- yes. Awoo-hoo!

The 90's X-Men cartoons were great. For that matter, there were tons of great superhero cartoons in the 90's-- X-Men, Spiderman, Batman TAS, Superman TAS...

I'm not really sure what else to add, but if I think of something, I'll let you know.

A couple of relatively obscure cartoons:

C.O.P.S. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxQagE62_zI)

Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpjBct8mD2I)

Another that was good, but is now noticeably dated is ProStars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaiUL5Z7NlI), starring Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and Bo Jackson.

The heyday of Warner Bros. Cartooning is always a plus.

Batman: the Animated Series is bloody fantastic. As is Animaniacs.

Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and Freakazoid are all available on DVD and very good. Histeria! was utterly amazing AND educational, if you can locate it anywhere. I've never seen it on DVD and haven't been able to find any reliable torrents.

Any love for Adventure Time? It's practically a DnD cartoon.

All the old Nicktoons were pretty good (Doug, Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Aaah! Real Monsters, Hey Arnold, Angry Beavers, CatDog, and Thornberries... plus later Invader Zim) as were the old Cartoon Cartoons (Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, the Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd and Eddy, Mike Lu & Og, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Samurai Jack, etc.) and Toonami (Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Reboot, Gundam Wing, Tenchi, Outlaw Star, Big O, etc.).

Also, as others have mentioned: classic cartoons. They are missing something if they don't get old Disney (Bambi and Fantasia are my favorites, but Jungle Book, Great Mouse Detective, and Sword in the Stone are a must, as are a few bits of 90s disney like Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast). Likewise for Warner Bros. Don't forget the other studios. Land Before Time and Brave Little Toaster were good. Also, don't forget the low budget animated television. The scooby clones weren't great, but the Flinstones/Jetsons sort of established the animated sitcom format well before the Simpsons, King of the Hill, and Family Guy (plus several related shows) even existed.

Saturday morning cartoons are good. Pirates of Darkwater was good. I'm too young to remember most of the classics (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, G.I. Joe) but Johnny Quest was on reruns, and there was some okay stuff in that.

Don't neglect Pixar and Dreamworks either. My favorites: Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and Up for Pixar; Shrek was good and I've heard good things about How to Train Your Dragon.

Others have probably mentioned Miyazaki, but be selective. Personally, I think the must-haves are Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. I don't think Ponyo was much good, and I think Howl's Moving Castle was overrated.

Also check out European stuff when you can. Triplets of Bellville and Kells were both awesome.

I'm leaving out so much still.

I forgot about that movie. I second this.
Pirates of Dark Water was pretty good but I don't think that series ever concluded. An American Tail:Fievel Goes West was one I was thinking about the other day.

I think Pirates of Dark Water was meant to have another season to conclude the story but it got canceled and just left it open.

It might be fun to get that, watch it with some folks, and pick up a game where the show left off.

Also, if I was allowed to produce a show, but only on the condition that it was a remake? This would probably be that show.

You require more Don Bluth:

- Titan A.E.
- Secret of NIMH
- Anastasia
- An American Tail (the sequel, Fievel Goes West is also a must watch even though it isn't Bluth's work)
- Rock-A-Doodle
- All Dogs Go to Heaven
- Thumbelina

good stuff

I'd need a refresher, but I would TOTALLY play in a Pirates of Dark Water Campaign!  That show was the shit!
