Welcome ladies and gentleman to The Campaign Builders' Guild 2nd Edition!
It's been a long and weary road, but ever the patient turtle we persevered and now we may bask in the fruits of our slow labor. You will notice first of all the site layout and style has altered somewhat. Things are still in the same general vicinity as they were on the old site so there should hopefully be little confusion regarding finding things however there have been a few minor changes.
First the user box has been moved from the left side to the top right corner. It gives you access to your profile via a click of your name as well as your private messages and a couple links to view any thread replies you haven't seen. Additionally you will notice the lack of a poll section, this is because the new forums have FULLY WORKING POLLS (truly we are the epitome of web 2.0) and as such anyone and everyone can host whatever weird polls they so desire. Finally I have done some initial re-arranging of the boards, the archived areas (CeBeGia for example) have all been moved into a nice tidy archive area at the bottom and out of the way of the more active areas. And you might notice a new news section which replaces the old clunky news system we had with a streamlined one that is integrated with the forums themselves. I've also done a bit of initial cleanup un-stickying topics that are no longer relevant and I will likely be spending the next few days going through and removing old stickies and adding in updated ones with current information.
Over the coming weeks there will be a settling in period where I encourage you to give any feedback regarding the new forums. This includes any errors or oddities you notice. The first oddity that you might encounter I can tell you straight out, and that is strange text. Due to the complexities of software it was inevitable that the script I used to transfer us over would mangle translation. What happens is it sees a special character (like say "Ÿ") and gets confused and instead sticks something else in. So if you see something that you thought said "Ÿona land of awesomeness" and it instead says "§†>ona land of awesomeness" let me know as that's an easy thing to fix. Just link me to the page where you found it and I can fix it. There are probably a few other things here and there that I need to know about so please let me know when you find them. One I do know about is the odd avatar stretching error that is making a few people's avatar's huge (you can fix it yourself by saving and reuploading your avatar) and I am looking into the best way to solve it. In the meantime, look around and get to know the new forums, bask in the glow of the turtle's new shell, and report any issues you have to me.
One final thing, don't think this is all there is to CBG 2.0, it isn't. This is just phase one of our master plan to
take over the world update the site. There are many new features planned such as donation tracking, wiki integration, and several other options which will help you more easily share your settings and ideas with each other.
In the meantime, it's 7:30am and I haven't slept I'm going to go and pass out for awhile before I have to go to work. It's been a pleasure working with you all and I hope that the new site is a joy for you, you all have certainly earned a spruced up community. My only hope is that I lived up to expectations in this regard.
Feels good, doesn't it?
A big thanks to our patient admins for seeing this through. I'm off to have a look around!
I hate to be the first to mention something (mildly) bad about our new, glorious and otherwise thoroughly amazing website (again, an uncountable number of thanks for your work and effort), but...
it seems like the part of the site made up by the toolbar and everything below is situated above the User Box, covering part of the text in said box.
Penis.
Fuck.
(I just wanted to be the first to spread obcenity abd vulgarity across the site. I have my reputation to uphold)
Now that I have finished with that,
YAY for the new site!

Could you give me a screenshot of this and tell me what browser (including the version of the browser) you are using and your screen resolution? I imagine it's an easy CSS fix involving the fact that your browser doesn't like the CSS Z-Index code. :)
I'm noticing the forums seem to periodically forget I'm logged in, so when I try to post or preview something it tells me I can't because I'm not logged in.

If instead of using the quick login box you use the login link on the navbar one of the options should be to keep you always logged in. Use that.

Ah, thanks, Nom.
Thanks for the update Nomadic!
You and Ishmayl and the others did a great job throughout the ages to put this up.
Best thing about it for the CBG's future--new people can register on any page! They aren't just tied to the main page anymore!
Worst thing about it- we still have the streetwalker titles... any chance we can have new ones?

One question for now though... where is the Quick Reply option? It seems to be missing?

I'm sure we'll eventually get new ones. In the mean time, though, I personally don't mind them.

You can activate or de-activate it in your user profile. I went ahead and activated it for everyone by default. As for titles I'm open to suggestions for new ones :)
I would like to say that it is great to see the CBG 2.0 finally become a reality after being in the works for so long.

Ah, thank you for the explanation. I think it would be a better idea to set quick reply on as the default... I can't see why someone wouldn't want it on except for page loading times.

That isn't the problem at all. :P
I'm running Firefox 6.0.2 at a screen resolution is also 1280x800. I get the same exact issue. Worse, even.
However, the issue is actually that the user icons are allowed to be too wide. Mine is 120px x 80px. A smaller icon will fix the problem. They cannot be more than 75px wide.
We should probably force icons to be smaller from here on out, or make the font size in the little top box smaller.
Also, will there be a "keep me logged in" option? I am too lazy to log in every time I visit...
EDIT: I tried uploading a new avatar and I was unable to upload one. I am stuck, it appears.
I haven't been able to access the site for about 2 hours. The page would just load and load but never do anything. I don't think it was a problem on my end since both my comps and my phone were having the same issue. It was probably just some server update or something but... I figured I may as well mention it.
There is a stay logged in button right below the login fields, no? I can stay logged in without having to sign in every time.
Also, can't we just scale the image to fit the size requirements?
Yeah the lack of a "remember me" button has become a little disheartening.
Nom already answered this question when I asked it. There's another way to log in where you can select to always stay logged in.

Hmm this is caused by avatar stretching then. I actually have the avatars limited to 100x100 but for some reason it's allowing yours to be larger. I'm going to see if I can fix this for you (and everyone else who is having the problem. Also as I said if instead of using the quick login option you use the login box (click the login link on the navbar) it should keep you logged in. However, since that seems to be an issue I'll see if I can add that button to the quick login area.
As for the unable to access the server problem I got the same issue last night as well as an excess resources email I'm trying to figure out what happened but right now I'm not sure. Note that this isn't unique to the new site it's happened several times on the old and I suspect a cron job is to blame.

So I tried a linked image and it isn't just allowing my image to be larger, it is
forcing it to be larger. The image I'm using now is 75x56px, but the site is up-scaling it to 121x90px.
EDIT: Looking around at other people's images, it seems to be forcing up-scaling to a height of 90px. Vreeg has a little banner for Celtricia as his icon, but it is being forced up to a height 90px, meaning instead of being only 120px across, it is 400px across.
This forced up-scaling seems to be occurring everywhere avatars are used.

What I've noticed is that it only does this to jpg images. PNGs seem to be scaled correctly.
I'm not sure if there's something that triggers the difference (i.e. whether you started the thread or someone else did) but I notice that when I click on the front page link to the threads, some of them default to the first post, while others default to the most recent post.

Actually I think I figured this out. Clicking the name of the thread itself sends you to the most recent post. Clicking the "New" icon next to it sends you to the first post. I would have expected those would be reversed.

Tried switching over to a .png version of my avatar and nothing changed. It's still getting scaled up to a fixed 90px height.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it is related to the problem with uploading avatars. I submitted a query to the SMF forums and I'm waiting for someone to get back to me about it. Until then we'll have to make due, at least it doesn't impact functionality too much just looks. I actually think I know how to fix the upload issue but I'm going to wait and see what the SMF guys have to say first.
I leave you guys alone for a couple of days...
Hm. another idea, on the front page with the recent posts- at some point could it also state who the thread creator was in addition to who the last poster is? Or at least, could it have a clarification line at the top stating that the poster names at the top of it are the "Last Poster"?
Also, it would be nice if it showed more recent posts. I think it shows less recent posted-in-threads than the previous version did.
I just opened to post a reply here... and noticed that Light Dragon had the exact same request. Namely that it would be nice to see thread author in the recent post list. Really, the recent post list is my most used CBG feature by far! If it is a question of space I'd prefer author's name over date. Since the list is sorted anyway, the relative date is implicit from its position.
I proposed something like the following on the old boards when you were looking for ideas for the CBG 2.0:
What if we had two Most Recent Post lists on the front page? One would be specific to the Homebrew section and the other would be for the rest of the boards. It seems only reasonable that our fair website should give priority to settings and campaigns :)
I'll chime in to say that I too would like to see a return of the thread starter column.
Why does the topic creator matter? I think it's more useful to see who posted last so I know if I've seen it or not.
I would also be fine with both. As stated before, the date column is sort of pointless.
I'd like to vote to keep the Most recent poster column.
I've found it wonderfully easy to see if anyone posted in threads I'm keeping track of -> Pop in, see who posted -> pop out.

Perhaps it is just because I am used to there being a listing of both the last poster AND the thread starter, but having ONLY the last poster confuses me, because it connects the thread title with the most recent name, which to me looks like the thread is being attributed to that person.
Topic creator matters- there are some people here whose topics I will not read.
And because of the reason Seraphine Harmonium states. It helps me tell the topics apart.
The date column can be shrunk. For example, it need not say "September" or 12:37:00 PM. It could instead say : 13/9 | 12:37PM or 4 Sept. | 12:37 PM, etc.
Quote from: Light DragonTopic creator matters- there are some people here whose topics I will not read.
How I see it is this is the real problem.
Let's not turn this into a referendum on people's post-reading practices. There are plenty of better reasons to want the thread starter to be shown, too. I, personally, am in favor of it. :)
Let's turn down the Vitriol and turn up some smiles.
Precisely.
Less :explode: more
  :)
I can look into adding the topic starter to the list. If I do however it will be for good reasons not bad. If you want to see their name just so you know not to read the thread, then I'm sorry I can't help you there.
Can we put the "URL being too long in the Tavern" issue on the To-Do list?
I really liked how clean the old board made posting URL's look.
Also, is there anyways to increase the number of topics listed in the "Recent Topics" section?

I can certainly look into cleaning up the tavern URLs if you'd like. It should just be some simple modification of the shoutbox code. As for the Recent Topics section, how long would you like it? It's literally a matter of me opening a single box in the admin area and changing a single number. So I can make it whatever size you want pretty easily (I could even allow you to dynamically change it but that would be a larger project for later).

The current Tavern lists 15, which feels a bit light to me. How about 25. That way even posts that are a few days old can easily be seen by all those who simply scroll down.
I'll probably read most every thread anyway (okay, skim it at least), but if I see a person whose work I really enjoy has made a new post I will be even more incentivized to be active in that thread. Also, different persons think and write differently and knowing the author makes it easier to quickly get into the right mindset. Also, it simply makes it easier to remember the thread and its content. Many advantages.
Also, I'm still lobbying for two Recent Posts lists; one for Homebrew, one for the rest. We have to remember what we stand for (settings/campaigns) :D

Well, if play-by-post is something you don't do or follow, having the top slots always taken up in recent posts is a little annoying, though I hadn't given it much thought until you said that.
But yes, if the main page had two recent sections, one for Homebrews and Campaign Elements, and one for more social stuff it might be nice. Of course, we can always just scroll down the page if all else fails ;)
Nono, it has nothing to do with me disliking all the other discussions and initiatives on the site!
I genuinely like most of them.
Instead I hope that the idea would A) make it more likely for setting-relevant material to be noticed and reviewed on a regular basis B) help advertise the settings to visitors and members alike C) incentivize all of us to work on our projects since they remain "in play" for longer.
I almost exclusively use the recent posts section for site navigation. The only times I access the forum directly are if I need to update my own material or review for example CE character creation which I am a part of. I'm not saying everybody needs this feature, but I think it would make our site better in many ways! :)
Well the good news is guys I found a cool thing called pagify that lets me use javascript to load html from different pages inside a div. Basically this means that we can have a very nice front page where the different blocks (news, recent posts, etc) can have multiple tabs. I can also do this with DHTML but it doesn't look as nice. So in other words we can play around with having different tabs inside the recent posts box.
I support Nomadic's comment about moving to displaying 25 and Crow's suggestion: "Also, I'm still lobbying for two Recent Posts lists; one for Homebrew, one for the rest. We have to remember what we stand for (settings/campaigns", as well as my earlier point about thread starter.
Regarding Crow's suggestion- since we are the campaign builder's site and we want to showcase homebrew settings it just seems like it makes sense to put them on the front page :), especially since the site no longer does the "setting of the month/week" feature that it did back in the days of Xeviat and Ishmayl.

It might be possible for me to set up something so that you could tag your official setting thread. Tagged threads would get added to a list with the most recent ones appearing in a recently updated settings section. How would you guys feel about that? Oh and as an aside I changed the recent topics list to 25, is that working better for you guys?
That could definitely work, Nom.
The 25 recent thread thing is working! Thank you.
As far as tagging our favorite setting thread that we created- that could work. Just having the most recently-posted-to 12 settings could also work. The drawbacks of the tagging is that a new member may have no idea how to "top" their thread. The benefit could be that 1-question/answer threads for a setting don't clutter the recent posts and 2-scantily sketched out new members settings aren't the first thing that lurkers see when they're perusing the newest settings and (this is a neutral fact) 3-if someone is like Llum in that they go on posting rampages to their old settings, they don't clutter the box (although I always love it when Llum does a huge update :D)
I think we should bring back the setting showcase and the setting interviews, then combine them. Then to make it more doable, make it something like quarterly.
Or no-stats theatre. Personally, I think the best way to really get a feel for an RPG setting is to experience it. :D
I'm not against that sparkle, but remember-
LC offered to do his and there was interest, then he didn't have the time to do it sadly and I've offered up Gloria for that 2 or 3 times over the past two years, but only Steerpike expressed interest. Apparently people just don't want to do no stats theatre. I think people petitioned Polycarp to do his Clockwork Jungle, but he didn't have the time.
Your setting was the only one that was completed successfully, if I recall correctly.

No there have been at least 3 successful no stats theaters. Polycarp did Clockwork Jungle, Sparkletwist did Asura, and Steerpike did Tempter. As for the Gloria one I never heard of it being offered, if I had I would have gladly shown my interest. I think the issue with the No Stats Theaters was more an issue of lack of advertisement. That can be fixed.
What Nomadic said. I would've jumped in the Gloria one as well; any lack of response on my part was solely due to lack of time, lack of awareness, or both.
I'd be happy to make a news post (if Nomadic doesn't beat me to it) promoting any future NSTs.
Ah, I forgot about Tempter! Thank you for correcting me. I didn't realize that was a no-stat theatre game.
And I didn't realize that Polycarp managed to get Clockwork Jungle going- I recall signing up for it but I must have not been able to make it :o (As sadly I have missed far too many CE games recently :(). One would think that I would have the usual schedule around here (with a theoretically 9-5 job [practically ranging from 8-7 on some days] and all), but CBGers tend to be available in the early afternoons EST for the most part :) whether that is due to European locale or night work schedules.
QuoteI would've jumped in the Gloria one as well; any lack of response on my part was solely due to lack of time, lack of awareness, or both.
Oh, thank you. I wrote up characters and storylines and everything.
I can correct my statement about only Steerpike expressing interest in Gloria- I think Vreeg and LC mentioned it was nice, but they didn't have time. So, to be precise, only Steerpike expressed ability and interest.
I posted about it in Nov. 2010, Bumped in Feb. 2011, then again in May 2011. http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,123302.0.html I also offered to run an assortment of my other settings, presuming that the lack of interest may have been a lack of interest in the particular setting.
I did so. Indeed, Gloria is a fav due to the delightful uniqueness.
I just am combining family, a huge job, and 3 games I run already. as well as being best man in a wedding right now.
But Gloria is the shiznitz.
Vreeg- No worries about that- I can't even make it to Steerpike's CE game consistently and all I have to balance is work; no family. :o. Thank you again for the kind words.
What's with the Twitter-style character limit in the Tavern?
It's hardcoded into the shoutbox. I can see about fixing it. Right now things have been a bit rough since I just started my fall term back at the college so I haven't had as much free time to fix things. I will do my best though :)
Its not a huge concern, it should be placed fairly low on the to do list (if at all). I was just taken aback by it earlier today. :)
We can always work around that, if needed. Do posts have a character limit?
Yes, but I don't think it's going to create too many problems.
It's about 61k (that is, around 61000 8-bit characters) per post.

I wrote a 12 page paper over the summer and it comtained 15,000 characters (not including spaces). So I think 61,000 characters is a perfectly acceptable limit (i.e. some where in the neighborhood of 48 pages worth of information in a single post) ^^

Testing this out from Android right now. The only problem I'm finding is that I can't scroll through Recent Posts or the Tavern. These don't seem exceptionally major, but if they can be fixed, that would be cool.

I think I remember Vreeg mentioning that he hit the character cap once but other than that, never.
I'll reword- is it shorter than the old board's limit.
I ran into that limit at least once. I was more concerned this time if we may have lost some data on long old posts.

Odd, it works fine on iOS Safari, though it did take a couple of tries to align my two fingers right to make the section scroll. If it still won't I'm not sure if scrolling oddities like this are anything really fixable on the site's end, because it is really up to how the browser renders it. What browser are you using?
No we didn't lose any data due to post length differences. Regarding browser variations I can work with those. Just please don't ask me to code for IE6.
Quote from: SDragonTesting this out from Android right now. The only problem I'm finding is that I can't scroll through Recent Posts or the Tavern. These don't seem exceptionally major, but if they can be fixed, that would be cool.
This is how it was for me on the old site, using the default browser on my Droid 1. A simple work around for that issue (on that particular phone on the old site) was to use the Opera browser. The site was also broken on there but it was in a way that it showed ALL of the recent threads and all of the current page of the tavern.
On 2.0, I have the same issue. It's better now because the option for the 50 recent tavern posts is outside of the tavern box so I can select that. Even on the old site, I had taken to going to the individual boards to check threads instead of looking at the recent ones, anyway.
Quote from: Light DragonI'll reword- is it shorter than the old board's limit.
I ran into that limit at least once. I was more concerned this time if we may have lost some data on long old posts.
And here I thought
I was wordy and detailed. I could see Vreeg doing it but I didn't know it had ever come up otherwise.
Quote from: sparkletwistOdd, it works fine on iOS Safari, though it did take a couple of tries to align my two fingers right to make the section scroll. I thought it wasn't letting me scroll on my iPad 2...I'll have to check again, I guess.
For the record, I'm using the Dolphin HD browser. I'll check out Opera, and if I can find it, Safari. I'll let you guys know if anything goes on with those.
Edit- Nope, no luck with Opera, and Safari isn't available. The tavern isn't as big of an issue as the recent posts, imho.

Safari is an Apple thing. Only those of us crazy enough to own Apple products will have that.

I'm crazy, but not
that crazy...

I wouldn't have ever bought an iPad for myself, I assure you.

Fixed.

Fixed.
Really fixed.
I have Apple products.
Sometimes I even eat apples.
Some of which are crazy awesome.
This discussion may be getting off track?
Yes.
If anyone's interested in actual discussion (as opposed to just tossing out glib remarks) on the economics of Apple products, I'd be happy to share my thoughts, as well as the research I did when making my own buying decisions.
But not in this thread. :)
My android, which uses Android 2.0, does not allow me to scroll down either in the recent post section or the tavern :(
I got a friend to test it on an Android Honeycomb tablet as well as an iPod Touch and had no scrolling issues on either, in addition to not having a problem on my iPad. It is a little finicky, like I said, you do have to align your two fingers somewhat precisely. So I am beginning to wonder if it's not broken as such, just a little odd, and you guys are doing it wrong. :P
no ipad issues here
Weird.
I'll have to try harder after my phone charges.
Can you install a browser on androids?
You can download different browsers from the marketplace, yeah. I have yet to find any one that will let me scroll on the CBG on my Droid 1.

New site looks nice, good job.
So; how is progress going on adding a column for topic starter. One other benefit of it is that we can see which threads are started by new members to the site. If you note, in the past, I often post in new members' setting threads. Now, all the thread has to stand on is its name... not the amount of posts or who started it.

This is going to have to wait. I started school so I don't have the time to work on the complex things like this right now. And it is a very complex one, there's no easy way to do it and I suspect when I start looking at it I'll be working on figuring out the solution for several days, possibly up to a week depending.
Ok. I had figured that it would be as simple as adding a new column, but I guess you have to figure out the script to pull X data from Y source. No worries. :)
When you get some time, can you add a time stamp to the archived shout box posts?
Hey, I've been having a problem with 2.0 since it was released (hence my absence) - I'm unable to log in using google chrome, it keeps telling me to check my cookie settings. I'm not sure exactly what I'm supposed to be looking for in there - is there a way to fix this on my end, or is CBG 2.0 just not compatible with Chrome?
For what it is worth, I use Google Chrome 14.0.835.202 and I have had no issues with the CBG 2.0. My cookie settings are set to "allow local data to be stored"
I'll see if that fixes it when I get home - maybe just need to update. Thanks. :)
Another question - the link in my signature doesn't work anymore, and I can't seem to find the thread it originally linked to using the search feature. Is there a way to dig it up, or was the thread lost in the migration?
I just wanted to make a suggestion. now I don't know how prevalent console gaming it is among the users here, but a section to add Xbox360 or PS3 user tags In the user profile section could be interesting.
I'd actually like to second that suggestion, in addition to adding slots for Steam accounts or other such common PC gaming user tags. :P
Oh, and don't forget about Skype, it's the new AIM.
