Title: Random One-Shots and Episodic Adventures
Post by: Xathan on November 01, 2011, 03:57:31 PM
This is something that we bounced around in IRC last night after we finished Steerpike's and Sparkletwist's one-shots (well, Steerpike's game is probably gonna end up being a two-shot, since we didn't quite finish). Basically, what I'm looking for is seeing who all would be interested in playing mini-games (one-three session adventures, often with pregenerated characters) or campaigns that are episodic (so if someone isn't able to be there for a given episode, the game can continue.) I'd be happy to run some and want to see who else would, both run and play. The idea here is A) more games on IRC, because you can never have too many games and B) something that allows people like Weave or myself or a few others that have schedules too unpredictable to be reliable members of a long running campaign with a continuous storyline that works best if all players are present.

So, who's up for it?

I would be, potentially, mostly as a player, though I'd like to run some more Tempter and Age of Madness at some point.

I may be interested in running a one-shot in my Plaguelands campaign, using 3.5 D&D rules for smooth and easy's sake.

Yes Steerpike, there were requests for Age of Madness after you left last night. :D Personally, I'm more interested in Tempter, but I nodded assent when CC brought up AoM.

I'm in if I'm available.

Glad to see there's interest! If you're up for running, it's just a matter of posting a thread saying you're interested - if a player, just wait for someone to post. :P Figured it's that simple.

QuoteI'm in if I'm available.

That's why these games exist - for people who aren't available all the time. :)

BTW, speaking of availability, do people want to post rough times when they would be free?

Aren't those two last sentences contradictory Xathan?

Nah, it's more of a "when are you most likely to be available, given normal circumstances" as opposed to "When are you always free." Subtle difference, but still a difference. :P

Depending on my schedule, I'd like to be a player some time :)

There's a thread for that here: http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,120995.0.html
Also see IRC template thread as a possible starting point:  http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,120987.0.html

Well my new job seems to draw up a different rota for each week so I would have no way of knowing until like the week before really.

I'd love to participate, either playing or running. My days are just packed, but I'll see what I can come up with, in terms of an IRC-ready adventure scenario.

I really like these flexible drop-in games that can run with what ever players happen to show up, without the need for painstaking scheduling just to get a session going. Would be nice to see more such games being run here.

1) I might want to play-test some of the Collegium Arcana (Hogwarts goes to Hell) game, on some nights, if there is interest.

2) I do get on some nights and ask myself why I don't run some Accis games.  Friggin rules are retarded-simple OSR d20 variant, ad the 4 sessions I ran off the cuff were a riot.  Bronze age and fun.

And MY AXE.

I'll definitely get an Opus game going in the nearish future. It'll be a one-shot, drop-in, drop-out sort of deal. I'd just like to get something going in the setting, which I think is a big factor in their development.

I mentioned this in-chat, but I'd be up for either running or playing these kinds of games. They make me happy.

Currently, I have three different games/scenarios I could run at little more than the drop of a hat.

Specifically, I have an Exalted (Solars/Lunars only) game, a Cthulhu game, and a d20 Star Wars (Infinity) game. I'm toying around with a rules-lite D20 Future game, but I'd need much more time to make it playable.

The Exalted game is more Puzzle-y and Investigative. Cthulhu is what you'd expect, and the Star Wars one is more of how you decide to approach it: guns blazing or sneaky sneaky.

Personally, I know I'd be interested in something in Opus, and Coyote's ideas sound pretty fun, too.  :D
I'd also be all about running another Asura game, but that kind of goes without saying... but I'll say it anyway!

Okay, when I have a bit more time (tonight or tomorrow), I'm going to make a list of people who want to DM (and settings they want to use), people who want to play, and people who want to do both. Glad to see there's so much interest!

Vreeg-

That sounds like a good concept. But what ruleset are you planning on using? I apologize but Guildschool is not for me; nor is 1E DnD (even though I own the Blue Book :o).

Yes. MORE!

The next one-shot for Spaceships, Sixguns and Cylcopean Horrors is previewed below!  You can read about the characters here (http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,209383.0.html) - ignore that first briefing, that was for the previous scenario.

For those who were thinking of potentially playing in a second part of the original scenario, I talked it over with the other players and we agreed that devising a new scenario made more sense - as the first party captured N'Gai, the second party might feel less important/significant, which might not be very fun.

Anyone who wants to play in this one is welcome to!  To get a taste for the kind of adventure it'll be, cast a glance over the logs (http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,209404.msg210577.html#msg210577) from last time (the conclusion to the first adventure will be up shortly).

A Fistful of Tentacles

[ic=Briefing]After completing a small contract in the system of Zhuque on the edge of the Homunculus Nebula – the very fringes of settled space – you received a proposition from a man named Samuel Crofton, mayor of the nascent colony of Menhir on the rugged, recently settled planet Mandragora.  The settlement's cattle have been going missing and Crofton believes that rustlers are making off with them.  The local sheriff, Phillip Burke, took a party of armed men into the nearby wilderness, hoping to find the stolen cattle and capture the rustlers.  Only Burke returned, raving insensibly, slipping in and out of catatonia; the other men never emerged from the shadowy depths of the forest.

Crofton has contacted off-world law enforcement agencies requesting further investigation, but the response has been unenthusiastic, and by the time the interplanetary police send someone to look into things the town will have been bled dry.  Private security agencies are far too expensive for the town to afford.  In desperation Crofton has asked the crew of the Demoiselle d'Ys  to look into the matter, promising to pay them as much as he can scrape together.  With the money from James N'Gai's capture and other recent jobs beginning to dwindle, you have agreed to help the citizens of Menhir if you can.

You will receive your pay either upon return of the stolen cattle or if you arrest, kill, or otherwise dispatch the rustlers.  In addition, the families of the men who joined Sheriff Burke will pay a bonus for the return of their relatives – or, if they are dead, of their loved ones' bodies.[/ic]
