Seems that people are interested in running this again. So it's now official. The Campaign Builders' Guild is now hosting the second Setting Consultation Project. This is the place to sign up and get paired up with other active setting builders. The consultation project pairs up two aspiring world builders, committing them to reading and reviewing each others work on a regular basis. Both people will be pressed by each others feedback into creating regular and detailed content which will in turn press their partner to read and give quality reviews on said content.
How do I sign up?Just post here with the following information:
- Setting Name
- Link to setting thread
- Rough idea of how complete your setting is
- Additional links to other setting information (other threads/wiki/etc) [optional]
- Any other information that might help us pair you up with an appropriate partner
Anybody interested in joining should be willing to commit at least a small amount of time every day to writing about your setting or discussing feedback given as well as reviewing their partners setting. You don't have to write x paragraphs a day, but give your partner their moneys worth. :) Once we get enough applications we'll start PMing people on who their partner is. Once you're paired up just contact your partner and get to it! The consultations will officially run for a week from when you are partnered up. Anyone who wants to keep consulting past this is encouraged to do so.

Consultants:
- Ninja D! - Pride's Wake
- Polycarp - Clockwork Jungle (http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,79326.0.html)
- Sarisa - Over Under (http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,208565.0.html)
- Xathan - Terra Macabre (http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,209401.0.html)

I'll keep consulting with Crow is he's game. Arga/Broken Verge for the win.
Name: Olam, the Antediluvian Age

State: The general ideas has been formed, and it's now in stage of refining what they mean in particular cases and forming general picture of the world (so pretty early stages, but can still be played freeform)
Other links: There is http://agora.archeos.pl, but it's currently closed to public
Other information: It's the first time I'm compiling something like this, so I wouldn't mind someone with some experience in organising that stuff - also, it's meant for 4e D&D, so knowledge of its system would help.
Yeah, we are the poster children for the Consultants Project :P
(read: I'm still in for consulting on Arga)
Ok sounds good. I'll let you guys stick together then. Kalontas you've been added to the list :)
Name : Pride's Wake

State : Just taking shape. Base concepts and ideas in place, little more.
Other Links : NA
Other Information : My participation is conditional upon this not taking place between December 13 and December 17. The only one of those days I expect I could have any real amount of time to give this is the 16th and the is my four year anniversary with my girlfriend. Three of the other days (and possibly the fourth) are set aside for the writing and recording of music (that's "in the studio" in bandspeak, though the studio is my iPad and my computer room). If it's any other time, I will throw up a thread for the fantasy setting I've hhad rolling around in my head for the last few months. It borrows heavily from traditional Tolkien-inspired fantasy, though I have more thought behind why things are the way they are. In broad strokes, each of the three races represent a very general political ideology and the current state of things is a result of the hubris of people long ago.

Added. We'll see how things go, if we have a slow pickup I'll probably stall this by a week to make sure everyone is on board. If things get going quickly I'll see if I can find you a partner who wouldn't mind holding off a week to start.

* http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,208565.0.html
* 3 cbg pages deep and I still feel there is a long way to go. No where near completion
* Additional links to other setting information (other threads/wiki/etc) [optional]
* Mostly this is a creative-stream of conscious style writing exercise (I haven't played a table-top in years) but since world building and campaign building go hand and hand I figure it would be ok. This is a non-system based setting so don't expect tables and charts. Although a map would be interesting... Influence/inspiration: children's story's, Flight (the graphic novel collections), and apparently Absurd British Humor/Fantasy.

Dynama

Well this originally was supposed to be a campaign setting, but since i kind of fallen out of it because of a lack of people to play with, i've kind of decided to try to turn this into a world for a cartoon strip. So i'm gonna need to start from scratch, which upon retrospect is probably a good idea. I've decided to cut down the level of races to three, Humans, Kobolds, and Poppies (basically giff). And i'm still thinking about toning down the scale from a world to a land. I've also cut the whole technology vs. magic, and just made the whole technology a hyper advanced magic. That's where i am so far. and i could probably use some consulting.
Inspiration: Dieselpunk. I love dieselpunk. Just everything about it seems to be engraved into my soul to love. Jazz, three piece suits, jazz, old cars, jazz, art deco, did i mention jazz, and i don't know if i mentioned this but.... jazz.... And i noticed a severe lack of dieselpunk fantasy blends, so i decided to oblige.
You're in NCS
I suppose it's worth mention that my setting is also systemless for the time being. I may, however, develop and want to discuss racial traits to better define what makes the races different from each other and those would be used for system info later on, if I ever get to that. I'll edit my above post to include mention of this if I can.
Please take note that i will be starting up a new school program by january and i'll be enrolled in that for a year. Shouldn't cause a huge problem, but after that i'll probably be off for a year or two someplace, and i won't have very much time to myself, and probably even less internet access.
And take note that I am not a fan of dark stuff. My content tends to teeter on PG level. If your setting is like LotR, violent and scary but not really "dark" then than that's fine, but anything past that point gets to me, so if you're doing anything like sacrificing infants, than i'll call you out on that big time. You could probably do better than me in that regard is basically what i'm saying.
Count me in, though I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to use Terra Macabre or Xeno Fantaseum. Question: can we post 2 settings and be a consultant for 2 settings and get 2 consultants? :P

Let's try to keep it to one setting for now. So pick whichever one you think most needs feedback.

Just throwing this out there -- If Xathan isn't restricted on timeframe and we're not dead set on having the whole thing take place all at once, this could bridge the gap between those that might not have time for it in a couple of weeks (Newb) and those that don't have time for it right away (me). Of course, we don't want Xathan to bite off more than he can chew since I'd ratherr not lose him for a couple of years again.
I'll probably get around to posting the basics of Pride's Wake sometime here, even if I don't end up participating in this.
So how do we determine pairings?
Currently I really have no setting to speak of, but I would like to take part in this. Not really sure how it would work, just putting the offer out there.

Probably better to do one at a time. As a bonus he'll have ammo for the next consultation project :D

So how do we determine pairings?
Based on how complete a setting is, what the author is looking for, etc, I will pair them up with an appropriate person. Mainly we want settings to be of a similar level of completeness to keep things easy and fair. I also want to factor in any preferences you have so I don't pair you with someone whose setting just won't work out for you.

Well now's a good time to start one and get great feedback :)
Hey guys. I've got a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach telling me i should take down all of my Dynama stuff. I'm paranoid that someone is going to steal my unprotected ideas. It's not you guys i distrust, it's everybody else in the world. Sorry... I'll still be a consultant of course. Actually I did have an idea for a setting, so i may pursue that.

Anything you post on this site falls under a copyright. If someone actually steals your stuff you can use that fact and the information on this site to go after them legally. Don't worry about it, you're safe.

Any original content you submit online is automatically copyrighted under your name (unless you say otherwise). Additionally this site time stamps everything which can help you in asserting a claim that your work predates the infringing work and that you are the true copyright holder.
I went ahead and clarified this a bit in the FAQ for you :)

If only all the planet was as awesome as this website the world would be a much better place to live. I'm still on for the consulting! Oh and thanks for clarifying that in the faq. But let's say i did turn turn Dynama into a comic and it got published by somebody else. Do you guys have any rights to sue or what?
Just a suggestion, but maybe the legal stuff should get its own thread, because it seems to be cropping up more and more lately?

Okay, I'm in, going to be doing Terra Macabre (I'll save Xeno for next go around). Here's my statblock:
Terra Macabre
Setting (http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,209401.0.html)
Right now it's pretty close to being "play complete" - done enough to run a game in with some work needed to define stuff for the particular game. That being said, there's still a ton to do: defining nations, who the Great Old Ones are, and making a decision if I'm keeping the various Nascent Things in or cutting them out.
System (http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,209401.0.html), Discussion (http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,209393.0.html).
Terra Macabre is A) Lovecraftian, and while I'm not going the omnipresent cosmic horror awful blargle route, it's still an element that serves as a backdrop for the action and B) Based on the real world in the 1700's, so someone with historical knowledge would be awesome, though not required - hell, my historical knowledge primarily is hearsay and wikipedia.

I can't sue (the exception would be for theft of something I did have ownership of such as my setting or the site content itself... like for example if someone stole the cbg banner). However, you can. If you catch someone infringing on your work you can send a cease and desist notice and then get legal on them if they refuse. Furthermore I strongly believe in the rights of our members to post and discuss their own content without fearing theft and so if you suspect a thief and contact me I'll go out of my way to give you whatever information I have to help you pursue your claim. We look after our own.

Gotcha added. :)
Regarding legal stuff I think I might see what I can do about writing up a proper ToS and copyright/licensing notice. Legally I'm not required to do this as the act of simply posting your original content to here copyrights it. However, if it would make people more comfortable to see a little (c) notice at the bottom of the page I'll happily work it in.

Last thing on this comment before I fully derail the thread, but I don't think the problem is that little (c), but just a lack of understanding of how it works - I think that post in the FAQ is exactly what we needed.
I feel alot better about the protection and everything, but for some reason i'm feeling really uncomfortable with the idea of being officially partnered with somebody. I dunno, it's probably got something to do with the upcoming school thing, and i always listen to my gut when it comes to my education. So yeah, i feel sorry, but i'm gonna have to back out...
I'll be happy to help out though in what way i can.

It's just a week long commitment (probably the week of the 18th the way things are looking) so it should be over before school even gets going for you. However, if you still want out that's fine. Sad to see you back out though. :(
Name: The Clockwork Jungle

Other Information: My setting is big. It has 256 wiki articles at present. I'm entering this project because I'd like to focus on one setting to read and write about, but at the same time I'm worried about bludgeoning my partner with years worth of background fluff. As the setting is pretty well established, I'm less interested in getting basic concepts reviewed and more interested in getting someone who will critique and ask questions about the details of what I write in order to help me get things more consistent and to provide me with an idea of what should be done next - what's still unexplained, interesting but not detailed, and so on. Will this work? I'm not sure, but I'm willing to give it a try if my partner is up for it. What I don't want to do is intimidate anyone or disappoint someone who was hoping to review the basic concepts of a new setting and got stuck with me instead.
Gotcha PC :)
I'll try and pair you up with someone who can handle your massively intricate setting ;)
Ok well unless anyone else wants in I think we're pretty much ready to do. I'll see about pairing people up here soon. This will officially start the week after next (week of the 18th) but I may pair people up early to give them a chance to read over what their partner has so far.
I will do everything I can to have a nice, organized post up by then. If I can't make that happen, my partner will just get a copy of my notes. They're pretty well organized, they just don't go into a lot of detail. And they're short.
Pairings have been made and the contest will start tomorrow. It officially runs for a week but that's not a hard limit, keep reviewing for as long as you feel like it.
