Title: Campaign Builder's... Book Club?!
Post by: Hibou on December 29, 2011, 07:07:32 PM
So after a discussion in the IRC channel, it has been decided that we should start a book club! I'm thinking it'll be an approximately bi-monthly affair where we determine a book to read, and anyone who wants to take part can then acquire a copy, read and review it. The details of starting such an activity still need to be worked out; most importantly it needs to be determined what constitutes a "book" for this (essentially, do we want to include graphic novels such as The Long Halloween or the Sandman series, collections such as the various ones available for Poe, Lovecraft, and whatnot, or anything else given the varying difficulty in acquiring them).

When it comes to determining which book to read for each cycle and any themes we might choose to follow in book choices, it seems like the best option would be for people to nominate books and then we can either vote on one or roll a die (with isobot/sparkbot) to determine the winner, and then we can progress through the list of nominated books. If anyone has another idea I'm certainly open to suggestions. What do you guys think? Any ideas for the project and/or early nominations for reading?

I like this. I think for books we should stick mainly to novella and novels.

The one and only book club I was in had everyone pick 3-5 things to read then we all voted on 2 of the titles from each persons list that everyone would read. That way, everyone participating got something that they had wanted to read added to the master list.

I like this idea too. Ultimately it's up to what works for the most people, but I think we can probably get the book club going with a combination of this and my original suggestion - just so that it doesn't become too much to do for anyone who ends up with a busy schedule.

I can make no promises of regular attendance - I have a lot of other stuff to read - but I approve of the idea, and will participate if I find time!

I like the idea as long as we have plenty of time to read things. I'd also be fine with changing up the timeframe depending on the length of the book. I also support the idea of including non-novels. Graphic novels and small short story collections tend to be my favorite reading.

I like the idea, and I'm all for including short stories as well, but I don't think we should include comic books.*

*No, I don't care if you call them "graphic novels." They're comic books.

There is actually a fine difference. "Comic book" is a single issue of a monthly ongoing series. "Graphic novel" is a complete comic story released at once. "Trade paperback" is like a graphic novel but it's actually a collected edition of an arc of a comic series. The one and only of these that I would sugggest probbablly actually falls into the TPB category won't be out for maybe six months or so.

But you wouldn't understand because you're a giiiiiirl. You couldn't possibly understand cool BOY things, like wearing your underwear on the outside. :p

Though I approve of the idea and wish to participate to some extent, I shall take part in the reading only if the genres proposed meet my educational needs. For I already have a list which I'll definitely prioritize over fictional or comic stuff.

I'd certainly be happy to suggest some reads. Some I'm sure concerned americans and canadians could find very enlightening.

That sounded a little crazy. I'm sure it can't be as bad as it sounds. Just be smart and check sources, don't just believe something because someone put it in a book.

The whole of it. I could easily picture those words coming from someone wearing a tin foil hat, pushing a shopping cart down the street. I deal with quite a few of that sort at work, I probably just see it where it isn't.
