Title: Potential New IRC game--Which setting?
Post by: Seraph on August 08, 2012, 02:08:47 PM
I am not guaranteeing that this will even happen, but I am thinking of running a game in one of my settings.  And I am curious to see which setting people here are most interested in.  Camulus  (http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,209664.msg217623.html)is new and relatively undeveloped, but it's pretty versatile setting for D&D and Pathfinder games.  Cad Goleor (http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,209360.0.html) is where MOST of my creative energy has been going for the past year.  Celtic inspired, it is more distinctive, but with its low tech, lack of armor, and high emphasis on honor, it isn't suited for everyone.   It uses pathfinder, but also implements some house rules, like the defense roll, is pretty much "human-only," and has a modified class list.  Avayevnon  (http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,76712.0.html)was my first major setting, and I have come back to it recently.  It's a more gritty fantasy "Renaissance" setting with steampunk elements.  It makes use of NEMESIS as its rule-set, a sub-game of One Roll Engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-Roll_Engine) system.

Feel free to post comments and talk about which one or ones you like most, and why.  Or if there is a second choice you'd be interested in playing in as well.  This is mostly interest gauging.

While I have an admitted fondness for weird and wacky dice mechanics, I'm not sure at all how well ORE would work in actual play. I'm doubly not sure how it'd work on IRC with a standard dice roller. As for the second thing, if you'd like, please let me know if you're actually going to use it, and I'll try to add some ORE support to sparkbot.

Cad Goleor was much fun, I'd definitely be interested in more games set within it. As I recall the rules worked well enough, too.

In-person play with ORE works just fine.  Once you've got the hang of the rules, things move right along.  That said, it would currently be difficult to run in IRC, this is true, since you need to be able to see the result of each individual die rolled.  The total of the dice doesn't matter.  Expert and Trump dice aren't really an issue, because you just add in a number before or after, instead of rolling them.

EDIT: Was messing around on IRC and found out how to do what needs to happen for ORE to function.  You just use "!roll show (x)d10" instead of "!roll (x)d10."  That way you see each roll result, and can work out height and width.  Expert dice can be declared beforehand, and the REST of the dice rolled individually, or added into the roll by inputting "!roll show (x)d10,(y)" where y is the value chosen for the expert die.

I'd definitely be interested in a Cad Goleor game.

Well, if I did run a CG game, this time it would take place entirely in Abred (the mortal world) at least for the time being, and the PCs would probably be adults, rather than children in the Otherworld, as much fun as that was.

I'd definitely be interested in Cad Goleor, it's right up my street :)

That said, me being across the pond from most of you guys might make timing sessions difficult, especially as my work schedule changes from week to week, so I think you're probably better off planning a game without me and then if I can fit in I'll join, if not no worries.

Perhaps I'd arrange for the game to take place somewhat "in town," and have the PCs live there, so that players with inconsistent schedules could conceivably drop in and out from week to week.  If a player can't make it, they go off and do their own thing, and maybe someone else makes a one-time or recurring appearance.

I will have very limited time for the next month or so, but if it started after then I'd love another visit to Cad Goleor.

Well so far it appears that everyone wants Cad Goleor.  I will consider getting a game together.
