So.
I realize there's a ton of variety in what we play, in the settings we write, in the things we're interested in trying out.
I propose... we run a con.
What I mean being: we take a couple of weeks, or maybe a month, and just try to run a bunch of one-shots. Lots of different GMs, lots of different settings, lots of different game systems, plenty variety. I'm interested in getting to play things I don't normally get to play, and getting to run stuff I haven't gotten to run much before (or at all). I think this could be a great way to jazz up community interactions, get people involved in other settings, and generally give people the opportunity to try out new things. And for me, it gives me an excuse to end my hyperpreparatory self-sabotage, because I don't have to craft a delicate origami flower (an elaborate and genius campaign), I just have to throw a paper airplane (run a little casual one-shot).
Thoughts? Interest?
I am completely on board with this! I already wanted to run a Q&D Cad Goleor One-Shot, so a con where we played a bunch of different one-shots sounds like the perfect time.
And I can think of a few settings I'd like to get the chance to play in.
Count me in.
I think if everyone who wants to join gets to run one game and plays in (almost) all of the others, that'll be a nice little play group, too. :D
Sounds kickass. I'd run something for sure.
I would love to have the time to be part of this... maybe if it happens again sometime :)
Depending on when you're thinking of doing this, I would totally participate. Most times in the first half of the new year I'm available, except a chunk of February.
Some other ideas:
1) "Panel Discussions," perhaps over Skype, where we talk about some kind of topic in world-building (some thoughts off the top of my head: dystopian worlds, "simulationism vs narrativism: a false dichotomy?", ___punk, play by post forum game design).
2) Some kind of entirely impromptu/improvised gaming session where we rotate GMs every 10 minutes, making up characters, setting, plot, and even rules as we go.
3) A collaborative world-building session of some kind.
So wait is this just an online thing or are we actually gathering at some place?
If it's just online then i'd be happy to participate!
Pretty sure LC just means online!!

Sounds fun! Also reminds me of the small con my college Geek Club ran. They had panels about all sorts of "nerdly" topics, and my senior year, I played in a game called... I think it was "Pantheon" where everyone at the table was a god. You took turns filling in details of the world, and then created a race of followers, who would interact with everyone else's followers however you both saw fit.

Alright! As long as it's not between christmas and new years I can probably participate.

I wouldn't worry about that. If multiple people are going to run one-shots, then it's going to take some time to prepare for it.
Clarifications!
Definitely online.
Probably February or March, to give people the opportunity to survive the holidays and have some time to plan their oneshots.
I like the idea of panel sessions or collaborative worldbuilding or et cetera, but I think someone else is going to have to be the one to set that sort of thing up.
I'm totally up for this. With the new Fate Core coming out I'll probably run something with that. It's a really simple system to learn and lots of fun.
If I'm available when this happens, I'll be glad to run intro gurps games. Hell, I'm up to do that anytime anyone wants to partake in one!
If it's in Feb, I cannot participate, but there's no guarantee I could participate if it's in another month- I have a schedule that is much in flux. (It's just a sure thing that February is impossible for me to run something; I may be able to play if it's the first week).
Panel discussions on the IRC channel would be interesting; if we could use subchannels for different 'rooms'. My understanding is that we have 2 channels; #thecbg and #celtricia?
Another option is to conduct discussions on Skype! so that we can hear each others' voices and it's more like a real con. I've done multiple calls with as many as 6 people in the conversation with no issues.

Our "unofficial official" chats are #thecbg for general chat and #thecbg_RP for gaming.
They are "Unofficial official" because nobody's under any obligation to use these channels; you can use whatever channel you want.
Perhaps you could clarify some more- are those two channels you mention the only ones that have the dice roller functions? Or can the scripts work on other channels?

Those two have sparkbot, the "unofficial official" dicebot.
Other channels may have other bots to do their own dice stuff. (isobot, ghostbot, etc.)

In that case, I may be available :)

Color me amused. I've convinced my department to run one of these around the beginning of March.
In any case, beginning of March time, I'd totes be down for some panel goodness. We could record the hell out of them for posterity, as well.
Sounds fun. We should call it the Turtlecon '13.

Yeah, do record them. I don't have anyway to communicate through skype so I can't particicipate in the discussions.

I second the motion!
The college group that ran the con I mentioned was called "No Such Organization." The convention was (and is) appropriately titled "NONCON." I appreciate thematic titles :-D
I wonder if maybe we should maybe name it something that doesn't have to do with turtles.
What a ridiculous idea...

You're right. That
is a ridiculous idea.
Newb, if you have skype you can listen to the call and type even if you don't have a microphone.
Other question is: is this just a site thing or will it be advertised at other sites to encourage "new blood"
And of course, our speakers will need to have a short blurb biography on their qualifications. :) Like in a real con's brochure.
Hmph! Listing your qualifications is for people who... well... have qualifications.
You have RPG design qualifications I would suppose- "Designer of Asura, a FATE based system, Sysop for CBG"
Likewise any poster here would have qualifications for a bio.
And those without qualifications obviously should not speak on a subject. :)

But I don't have any qualifications...
If you designed a setting, you have a qualification.
If you won a contest, you have a qualification.
Decide what you want to speak about and then write your bio accordingly to demonstrate why you are the best person to talk about that subject.
Example: Have you read 100 books about the Jazz Age and you want to talk about Settings in the Jazz Age... That's a qualification.
I'm in, especially for March MiniCon Madness.
Just wanted to drop my support here: this sounds awesome, and I'm all about it. :D

We COULD call it CabbageCon...
And this still has my full support. I am interested in running a one-shot. I am curious though: would people be more interested in Cad Goleor, or Infernal Devices?
Infernal Devices. I love crazy steampunk space travel powered by bound demons.
Also, I'll be running...something for the mini con. Maybe some sort of PbP that will run for the duration as opposed to the typical IRC one shot.
I'd personally be more interested in Infernal Devices, but that's mostly because I play in a Cad Goleor game already and I like variety. It's not like I wouldn't be up for more Cad Goelor, really!
Ok, it sounds like there would be interest in an Infernal Devices One Shot. I will start working on one. How do people feel about Pregens vs. everyone making their own characters? It will be based on a ship and it's crew, so the crew would have at least a few necessary "roles" such as a Pilot and a Priest (or "Sorcerer") Engineer, and of course the "Captain." I could be alright with people making up their own characters as long as these necessary roles get filled.
I'd be OK with Pregens, and would recommend them for a one-shot. In my experience, relationships between PCs usually take a few sessions to develop - X PC hates Y PC's guts but trusts Z PC with her life etc. With pregens, all that is already in place. It usually takes players a few sessions to settle on a complete personality for their character, too and pregens again help that - you've been handed a role, rather than being asked to entirely invent one. Also, I find writing characters for these things often helps greatly as a plot-generator and as a way for players to get a better feel for the world. I personally found that writing the Sixguns characters, for example, made the game-world suddenly feel much more real for me. You can always still allow custom-made PCs, but the pregens could at least be good examples.
I second the recommendation for pregens. They make it much easier to dive into, and I think that there's still plenty of room for players to "make them their own" if they find they like a certain one.
(I think I've done a pretty good job carving out my own unique take on Sthena, for example. )
I am on it! I was leaning in that direction anyway. I will post a thread in the next few days!
