... and I'm not going back any time soon. That place got vitriolic fast. I mean real fast. So fast I'm tempted to cancel my accounts, though I suppose I'll just remove the cookies and go back for a peek later.
So I just wanted to say "thank you" for the civility here. Everyone here might not always agree, but you're always agreeable.
You know, I've never actually registered there, and every time one of these posts shows up, I feel even less inclined to. :D
(Actually, I take it back. I had to register there to get the D&D Next playtest materials. Ok, I've never actually posted there, and it just seems like... with a place like this, why bother?)
Sometimes I'm left wondering "how can a place that awful continue to even function," but he, it's a forum on the internet, so I shouldn't be too surprised...
It sucks, being chased away from there after 11 years of contributing. But the CBG is the best of what we had there.
I haven't been on the WotC boards in probably over 5 years. I never found that anyone there had anything very interesting to say, but I don't really remember any of the nastiness that people talk about going on there a lot. Is it mostly accusations of having wrongbadfun or what?
sparkletwist, I'm guessing that it continues to "function" just because its the official home of the Powers that Be, i.e. Wizards.
I remember that maybe 8-10 years ago, when I was just getting into the hobby, I found some good stuff on there, but it was all being posted by people like Salacious Angel and Xathan anyway (there was a guy called Lords of the Nine who had some great stuff. Anyone remember the Walmart Apocalypse? Also a pretty decent d20 Lewis Carroll world whose name I forget).
EDIT: Found the former (http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Walmart_Apocalypse).
Check out the Nevergrow. Creepy!
I'm with you 100% Steerpike; I came over to the CBG because that's where all the good settings were. (Also, I'm flattered you included me on that in particular. :) )
The WotC boards I avoid like the plague now because it hurts me to see it. Back in old Teresia city (their freeform MTG PBP)...back there is when I first started Roleplaying. I was Xealaz, Dementia Master back then (as well as a dozen other people, I was a real alt-aholic back then). I loved it - if I hadn't gone there, I wouldn't be here now. If someone there hadn't mentioned Tanar'ri and I hadn't gone looking for it, I never would have picked up the Fiend Folio and wouldn't have gotten into DnD. It hurts me to see it now, like going to an old playground you loved as a kid that's become a hangout for drug dealers and prostitutes.
I miss the old WOTC boards. I also have no desire to ever return.
Something compelled me to play Dead Rising again recently. I still don't find it all that great of a game, but running around killing zombies in a horse mask is worth something. Anyway, it also was the first thing that came to mind when reading about the Walmart Apocalypse
(it's set in a shopping mall, but encountering various horrors in mall stores isn't that much different from a gigantic store that has everything, including various horrors. )

This is true, I revise my comment to be that there was no one there with anything interesting to say who didn't also post or end up posting here - after all, I did find the CBG through the WotC boards :)
I posted there a bit back when I was getting into DMing. It wasn't great then, though occasionally you had some gems. I miss the old Joe Wood thread, which I think died when they migrated forum software.

Joe Wood was amazing! Glad I'm not the only one who remembers it. I remember seeing LC making his early renditions of Jade Stage, which I thought were excellent (and still do). Walmart apocalypse was fun, too. I recall another good campaign setting being the dream/nightmare one... someone here made it I believe. Also, does anyone recall a setting that had a bunch of floating islands in the sky, where books were a source of food, and it was written through a bunch of little in-character excerpts? It was early on the transition between 3.5 and 4e, so it's somewhat later than what most might remember.
Other than that, I don't remember much else positive. It's definitely further dissolved into a vitriolic pool of bitter grognards and bickering WotC fanboys. Glad to have you back around :).
This one?

hm. the cross-posted Goblin adventures: http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19921186/Goblin_Campaign?pg=8
Yeah, Joe Wood is what got me thinking about "small adventures" way back when.

It's been a long time since I checked out the WotC boards. I don't remember as much of the vitriol as it seems to have devolved to by all accounts now.
I only go there to talk about the D&D Next stuff. I could talk about it here instead.

Please do. :D
Discussion about D&D Next has kind of fallen off here, lately. I don't know about anyone else, but, for me, it's because I've really lost interest in it. To me, it's hard to not be cynical about it-- it seems like each new packet contains significant and almost random revisions, more like they're just throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks rather than following an organized testing strategy.

Sparkle just hit the nail on the head for me, I think. I had initial interest and took part in a playtest with some friends but the last few months I've just found it really hard to give a damn about what they're doing.
(though I do have a soft spot for Druids and the draft they put up in the latest packet actually looks quite good)
