Title: Is a Thread Missing?
Post by: LD on April 02, 2013, 06:10:45 PM
I don't see the underdeep discussion thread on the boards any more and the thread says it's missing? http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,209781.msg220603.html#new

Did we like, exceed the maximum size for a thread?

I posted what happened in the shoutbox but here's a recap:

Ok guys I'm trying to figure something out. Somehow something caused the forum software to register a deletion of the underdeep discussion thread. It is registered under my account name but I know that I didn't tell it to do that because I was currently posting inside the reply page (you cannot delete a page from that location as it doesn't have a delete option).

Fortunately it was just the discussion page not the rules or game page. However it still had stuff in it so I'm kind of frustrated by this. I'm digging through backups to see what I can restore but it's proving to be a pain. It might be quicker if steerpike just started a fresh thread for the time being.

I'm really sorry about this. Talking with an SMF guy I know I've discovered some options that could have fixed this and I have implemented them (so if this happens again we can quickly restore) I just hadn't been aware they existed before.

Hey no worries.  Honestly, when was the last time anyone looked something up in an old page of the discussion thread?  It would have been near-impossible to find anything anyway  :P

Maybe *I* somehow accidentally deleted it?!?  I can't see how that would have happened but you never know.  Anyway, I will make a new thread.  No need to go to heroic lengths to resurrect it, Nom!

No steerpike you didn't. I can see deletion logs and it shows that I did the delete. The issue is figuring out how in the world it happened. Anyhow I've implimented a "recycle bin" so that any future deleted posts will actually be moved to a hidden admin area where they can be recovered if need be. Again I'm terribly sorry about that.

The good news is I looked through the backups and I have found the thread. It's slightly dated since the latest full backup is from march 20th (so it's about 13 days old) but that's still a big majority of the saved stuff. I'll go ahead and try to restore it if I can so you if nothing else do have an archive of some of the older things. Though since you don't seem super worried I'll put it in the "do when I have the time" pile as opposed to the "DO IT NOW!" pile.

Yeah, I mean I can't speak for others but there was nothing particularly important to me in that thread per se that I don't have elsewhere (in the rules etc).

I have a personal backup of the rules, btw, which I update periodically, so in case the worst occurs and that gets deleted we are safe, probably.

If the actual playing thread gets deleted though, we're boned, I'd just start a new game :P

This is why I enabled thread recycling. It should now be impossible to accidentally lose a thread.

Ah, that sounds good :)
