Title: Contests and Prizes
Post by: Cheomesh on April 17, 2013, 02:20:53 PM
Far be it from me to complain about lack of entries (because I don't enter), but it is not a good thing that contests lately have been rather lack luster.  It's a community thing.

So I am presenting an idea:  Prizes.

Each contest lands the winner something - be it a badge, a physical good or whatever you guys could come up with.

Prizes would be put up before the contest so everyone knows what they're competing for.

Who puts up the prize?  It could be done round-robin style, wherein it's a different person each month but that could fall into the same problem as the lack of entrants.  It could be one guy or a few guys, but that could be asking for too much.

Yay or nay?

M.

While prizes for contests can be nice, I'm used to the monthly challenges at the Cartographers' Guild, which are usually 'prize-less' with only a badge to post under your name as any prize at all. We have had several challenges that was sponsored by a publisher and sometimes prizes were offerred, but in my opinion, those prize winning challenges did not attract any additional participants due to their being a prize compared to non-prize challenges.

Note as mentioned, there's always a 'badge' to denote the winner, there has to be at least that.

I thought the "rename the rankings" prize was pretty sweet (I was stoked that I got the honour).

Here's a crazy idea.  It would radically change how contests have been run, but mull it over.  What if the contest winner's setting(s) were featured in the next contest?  So instead of anyone writing entries in any setting they chose for each contest, you had to submit entries specific to a setting, determined by the last contest's winner.  This way lots of settings would still be featured, and the "prize" of a contest would be getting a bunch of people to read your setting and come up with possible material for it.  This would also probably encourage more reviewing.

It might be time to feature that, again. We have been using the current rankings for a while now.

I'm not really a huge fan of this idea. It's neat for the person involved-- though it might be kind of disheartening if that contest then has few entries. There are some settings on here that I just don't feel like I know enough about to write material for, or am not hugely interested in them, or any number of reasons that might hold me back, and I can't be the only one. We already have enough trouble getting entries in contests, so I don't think there's a reason to make the barriers higher.

Plus, people like me with no active settings (never thought id say that here) wouldn't want to compete; if I happened to win, then I totally screw over the next months contest. :(

Oh, I've been writing. Nothing I'd inflict on another human being unless I was trying to get the location of the terrorist bomb or something, but I've been writing.

I have tried contests with prizes in the past. Unfortunately everytime someone won the contest they refused the prize and told me to just keep it or give it to the runner up (who would also refuse it and so on). That's why I stopped, it just doesn't work due to the mindset of cbgers. Having said this I have been considering badge ideas for later on when I have more free time.
