Title: (Eberron/USK) My take on the Mournland
Post by: LoA on April 25, 2013, 11:30:48 PM
Hey everybody, sorry for the loooonnnnng slumber. Life has been very busy as of late.

However me and a couple of friends were playing Bioshock and I offhandedly mentioned my USK setting. They told me to sign them up, so I dug up the old books and began to review everything all over again. We started off with new characters picking up from the last time I played with people.

I began to think more about the Rakshasa Rajah's. I once read somewhere that it took over a thousand dragons fighting one Rajah just to weaken it enough to bind it to Khyber. That seemed insane to me. What being could possibly be that overwhelmingly powerful that it would take that many dragons? As I began to think about the mournland a twist dawned on me like the morning sun.

The one thing that I read about the mournland that really captivated me was that, at its essence the mournland was one big living thing that encompassed the land mass known as Cyre.

I have the Chamber involved with this campaign but I could never figure out what their role was until now.

After eons of time the true nature of the Rakshasas began to fade from memory. Even from the great memories of dragonkind. After the chamber was formed, a few dragons discovered a tablet with the Rakshasa language on it. They shared their discovery with the rest of the Chamber, and it was soon discovered that the word "Rajah" in the Rakshasa tongue meant "land".

This puzzled everyone. Did the demons own land? They were under the assumption that the Rakshasa owned the world. And how exactly does one bind "land" into Khyber? Eventually the Eyes of Chronepsis caught on to what the chamber have found out and so the leaders of the chamber were brought forward to the Conclave in Argonnesson.

They soon explained what the "Rajah" were. It was thought by just about everyone that the Rajah were six limbed cat monsters that were so powerful that it took a thousand dragons just to weaken one enough to bind them to Khyber. Well this isn't accurate. Rajah's were actually big blobulous forms of dark Khyber magic that took on a life of their own, and drained the life force out of everything they touched. The Conclave made the Chamber leaders swear that the Chamber would never divulge this information to anyone, even to other citizens of Argonnesson. The Chamber agreed to their terms (what choice did they have).

The Chamber soon found a piece of the prophecy that sent chills down there spines. A Rajah was going to rise in the land of Making. This sent the chamber into a frenzy, and they spent a great deal of effort trying to keep the Rajah in, but sure enough, centuries later the Day of Mourning happens. The Chamber braced for the worst.

However everyone was shocked that the Rajah didn't expand beyond the borders of Cyre. Through some deep digging the Chamber eventually found out that for whatever reason the Rajah couldn't inhabit anywhere except for land called "Cyre". They were even more puzzled at the fact that the rajah wasn't popping in the town of New Cyre in Breland. So it obviously could only inhabit land flat out called "Cyre".

So thats my take on the Day of Mourning so far. What does everyone think?

Having only a passing familiarity with Eberron cosmology, I can't speak to your post's relevance to that setting, specifically. But as a slice of concealed cosmic horror, it's pretty brilliant.
