Player or GM, what game are you taking part in this Halloween?
Care to share any memories of past Halloween games?
I'll be posting my answers soon. Have fun folks!
I'm putting together a game of Little Fears. This is a short game, a two night event. I've set it in the 1970's, in an orphanage. The new administrator has some dark secrets and children are disappearing. Others are being adopted by unusual families. If all goes well it will be a scream :P
As far as past games, I do have one that maybe fun to share. It was a Dark Conspiracy game in the late 90's. But I've tried to write about for most of the past half hour and it just keeps coming out poorly. Sounds a bit pompous, so I'll step back and think about it for a bit and try again later.
I have yet to ever DM or play in a Holiday Themed game session. It's just never been in the cards :(
Always wanted to though.
I'll be playing in this (http://www.thecbg.org/index.php/topic,209992.html), hopefully. :D
Little Fears sounds amazing, Fortunato! Let us know how it goes.
I've done a few things for Halloween. On the site I've run IRC one-shots twice (this year will be the third time). I run a Planescape game and last year I sent my players to Ravenloft for all of October, with the final session near Halloween; the adventure involved a ruined convent, zombie nuns, catacombs, a pregnant mohrg with an undead child wailing from her womb, a Night Hag, a Victorian-style manor house, torture rooms, Kytons, and a soul-sucking transdimensional machine. This year I'm running another series of Ravenloft sessions for the same group. I've posted most of the adventure on my blog. (http://bearded-devil.com/?tag=the-savour-of-madness) Since I used zombies and devils last time I wanted to stay away from undead and demons/devils, so this time I went with Intellect Devourers and Grimlocks. It's going pretty well so far.
I have had a number of Halloween and spook themed games in Celtricia, over the years. And frankly, 'the spooky' is added more and more to my games as time goes on.
During the years the Igbarian's played during the undead plague period of Igbar, the Halloween sessions were very grim, with the PCs helping the Deductors of the Scarlet Pilums (sort of like detectives) trying to figure where all this was coming from. We had then crawling through an orphanage where the children had all become Zombic, and where one of the counselors had been taken over by a spirit...it made for a disturbing session.
Had another one we played in the room with only candlelight and the fireplace, with the PCs exploring the hidden attic area of the Steel Libram, where a wight, which had been creeping out and killing the junior Scriven Letterman at night, was hiding. That one was also fun. The heavily armored characters could not squeeze through the tiny secret door...
Celtricia has an abundance of undead, due to the difficulty the spirit has in leaving the Waking Dream without proper shriving. Makes these games easier.
None this year; but a few years ago Steerpike ran comic-relief Wispy through a slasher-horror-fueled IRC game sidequest of Cadaverous Earth... The demon-blood that had gotten into him from his earlier adventure into hell backfired and he was taken over by a murderous insane alter-ego as opposed to his usual covetous insane self. Not my usual style of gaming, but it was hilarious under the circumstances... Wispy wreaking even more havoc than usual, his faithful chitinous demon hound by his side.
Will I run a Halloween game? Probably not, but I made one years ago I'd love to run.
Penny Dreadfuls: Daughters of Rán, is a Savage Worlds one-shot I wrote in which the players choose from pregenerated monster detectives working for the British Empire, solving mysteries in the late 19th century. Characters included:
- A civil-war veteran American Confederate Vampire. Illiterate, erudite, and careless, like a Mark Twain character.
- A medical doctor-turned lycanthrope, very Bruce Banner/Hulk-like. The character included a system in which transformation into the beast incurred "corruption points"; too many points and the player loses control for the rest of the scene.
- An ancient Egyptian mummy resurrected by the Royal Geographical Society and made a celebrity by newspapers and novels. His background as a great leader, a Pharoh, made him very persuasive and charismatic.
- A Frankenstein monster created by Napoleon's Empire as a prototype for a new solider to serve the French Emperor. Dim-witted but strong, Napoleon hadn't the heart to send him into battle, and instead kept him as a personal servant. Devastated at the death of Emperor, one of the character's prized possessions is a small doll of Napoleon which he refers to as his "bon ami".
All together the group would be part of the Office of Esoteric Services, specifically what the men jovially refer to as Department PD, which is short for penny dreadfuls, the cheap comics which predicted such horrible monsters would walk the streets of London.
They'd go around beating up German spies and Cockney thugs, discovering Mignola-esque conspiracies to resurrect ancient monsters, and use an equal mix of science, violence, and pluck to save the Empire. Written and intended to be like a Gen-Con game, fast and easy to jump into.
Wish I could have thought of a female character, but I've always drawn a blank for that... maybe a female Ichtyosapien arose from the cold depths? Then again, I guess any of the characters could plausibly be female.

I know it's been a bit but I can give a sneak peek at that LF game. It's not done yet, real life intruded. But that gave me extra time to work on it which can be bad for me, it went from 3 pages to about 23 and then I made maps. In any case, I've thrown my notes into a pdf and put them here: *link temporarily removed*
My own free time will be short over the next little while but I'll be around. I'll share more later.
Still reading, but that's a superb little adventure you've got there! I enjoyed the "70's gazetteer" at the beginning.
Thank you :)
Glad you like it!
Ack! I just realized that I uploaded a version without some major corrections. Sorry, about that. I have updated the pdf, *link temporarily removed*.
