Title: Sunless Sea
Post by: LD on January 06, 2016, 10:15:33 PM
In the event you were not yet aware: Sunless Sea (http://store.steampowered.com/app/304650/) is a game worth checking out for those who enjoyed China Mieville's The Scar  and Age of Fable (http://www.ageoffable.net/).

The game is created by a British game studio. In the game, you can physically travel around an underground Victorian dystopic new-Weird-lite (more Gothic) ocean and have dismaying soul-shattering adventures.

Honestly, I had much more fun with its browser-based progenitor, Fallen London, but then I have a very low threshold for frustration when it comes to Roguelikes. That said, the game is just dripping with creepy atmosphere and while it's superficially Lovecraftian, I can promise that it transcends all of its possible antecedents by miles.

Yep, it's good stuff. I also play Fallen London. I don't know how it would be for someone new to the setting to start off with SS vs FL, but I think it'd be probably just fine. The graphics are decent, and the music is really nice. But I play SS (and FL) for the stories (which have enjoyable, high quality writing) and the uber-cool setting.

It is pretty great. I'm looking forward to zubmarines.

Zubmarines! My FL character, Bartelby Streeche doth have one, but poor Lemuel Brinechapel (my SS character) is sorely lacking. Time to drown my sorrows in red honey.

If any setting deserves a proper series of games set in it, it's Fallen London.

I liked some of the writing in Fallen London, but I did not like the sheer repetitive grindyness in between. I figure the point is because it's free-to-play and they want you to spend money on more turns, so the point is to erode your supply as quickly as possible, or whatever, but it just didn't pull me in at all. Sunless Sea seems more appealing because it's just something you buy outright, but then again it's a roguelike, so, who knows.
