Not sure if this has come up before or not, but seeing as music is such a massive part of my life, I thought it'd be fun if we all post what kind of stuff we mainly listen to. This is as difficult for me as I expect it will be for you lot, because I like SO MUCH music, but I think we should try to name a few major genres and favourite artists, maybe most recent purchases, and also stuff like what (if any) music we ourselves make.
Okay so... in no particular order...
Big into my punk. If it has some connection to punk, the chances are I'll like it at least a little.
I like experimental music, for example the experimental "hardcore" scene, stuff like the Dillinger Escape Plan and The Locust, although also other wierd stuff like Captain Beefheart and Primus and so on.. Some modern classical and stuff (Philip Glass is teh roxXx)
As for less progressive/experimental hardcore/metalcore stuff... I like a couple of bands like Converge and Buried Inside, but mostly its all a bit samey.
Extreme metal (death metal, black metal, grindcore, etc.) is fun, but I have to be in the right mood. Power metal can also be a laugh as long as its tongue-in-cheek (cheesecore to the max!)
Some jazz is good, but generally the wierder/more rock influenced side of it. A lot of jazz really does nothing for me.
As far as electronic music goes, experimental stuff like IDM, glitch, breakcore and so on is good. As for more conventional dancy stuff, psytrance is great to just get into a groove with, and has the occasional floaty bit which is good for a quick rest :P
Talking of dancing I'm also a huge fan of reggae (mostly roots and/or dub, but its all good) and ska/two-tone (Madness ftw!!!)
Latest musical purchase was the Richard D James album by Aphex Twin.
Few favourite bands...
The Dillinger Escape Plan: Hard choice between them and The Locust, but I dunno... Dillinger have always appealed to me slightly more, although I do love The Locust.
At the Drive-In: Great band, incredible energy... Relationship of Command is probably my favourite album ever :P
7 Seconds of Love: Found Rathergood.com ages ago... and then he formed a band! A ska band, no less! A GREAT ska band, no less! I went to see them at the Battersea gig in London in the summer... they were FANTASTISCHE
Melt-Banana: Japanese noise-punk... Great fun! Lol. And some of the sounds he gets out of his guitar are just insane. Well, almost everything about their music is insane, but yeah...
As for the music I make... well my college band is doing cheesy pop-punk which is just for laughs and to help us pass some of the stuff on my course (I'm doing a popular music diploma thingy or something like that...)
My other, primary band is more experimental, and harsher... You can hear an unfinished demo of one of our more technical songs on our MySpace at www.myspace.com/ziekenisgod
Still need to add the cello and vocal parts to the recording.
So, that's my musicality... what's yours? What do you listen to? What do you dance to? What do you have on as you drift off to sleep? What do you rock out to? What do you play?
I, too, like punk quite a bit. Not a whole lot now (I'm getting into it), but I dig the Offspring, the Ramones, the Clash, and a bunch of other random stuff.
I live to rock. I love metal; including the many different conceptions of metal. I like the classic metal produced by bands like Metallica and Megadeth, the screaming hair metal of Iron Maiden and Limozeen, the pounding newer metal by Fear Factory. I like the uber-goth dark metals like Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, and Danzig. I also like some oddball stuff like Corrosion of Conformity, Tool, and Rage against the machine. If it's got several electric guitars, and they're screaming at you, and they've made at least one song about the government sucking, I'll probobly dig it.
Me and my siblings celebrate the hell out of the fact that we're all third generation Irish Americans, so I listen to alot of the music from the Land of Ire. I love the Pogues, the Chieftans, the Dropkick Murphys, and Flogging Molly is okay, too. (This stuff sounds ten times better when your PISSED)
I also really like electronic, dance, and "experimental" music, like OhGr, Skinny Puppy, NIN, Wumpscut, Terrorfakt, Combichrist, Suicide Commando, Switchblade Symphony, and the Cruxshadows.
But more than anything, I like my two-headed beast; Rammstein and KMFDM. Rammstein is a personal favorite, a band I am forever loyal to, and KMFDM is my god. They've got so many songs, they hate oppression and authority so much, and they're always rocking or thrumming out some of those ultra heavy beats I love.
...and the muthafukin D! FUCK YEA!
+10 points to whoever knew that I didn't mean "angry" when I said PISSED.
Thelonius Monk
Gustav Mahler
Igor Stravinsky
Husker Du
Tom Waits
Talking Heads, esp. the older stuff
Brian Eno
King Crimson
Ludwig Van
Did I mention Igor Stravinsky?
Camper Van Beethoven / Cracker
Well, there's a start...
I can and will listen to pretty much anything except for black metal/death metal/metalcore/insert other similar, God-hating recent metal subgenre here (STEREOTYPING FTW), soulless gangster rap, and some punk. I'll listen to pretty much anything otherwise. I like some hair metal, some metal like Metallica, Megadeth, Ozzy, etc. Hell, give me a Savage Garden CD or a collection of techno rave tunes and I'll be able to stomach them. My favorite music in particular consists of:
The Doors
Dream Theater (album only, Petrucci needs to stop shredding live)
Billy Idol
CCR
Shinedown
Queen
Nickelback
Plus a bunch of select country. I can never get enough of the soft rock/pop songs featuring piano or acoustic guitar, and I'm a huge fan of certain really epic opera and opera-like vocalists (Josh Groban in my opinion kicks ass, and I really enjoy The Point of No Return done by Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum from Phantom of the Opera).
Oh, and trance. Anything nature or in general capable of putting you to sleep is great.
I couldn't possibly describe to you my musical sensibilities (don't rightly know what they are). Instead, here's a list of a few of my favourite artists, in no particular order...
Joan Osborne
Tool
Akira Yamaoka
Audioslave
Whoever wrote the Morrowind theme song
Billy Joel
Johnny Cash
Segio Mendes
Santana
Cat Empire
C. Mingus
Damien Marley (and a bit of his dad)

I'll take that, thank you!
That's an easy one for an Australian, mate - heck, we've got a brand of beer specifically
called Piss Beer (certain obscenities prevent nation-wide distribution, of course). I think we like "shitfaced" a little more than we like pissed, though, but to each his inebriated own.

Lynard Skynard

i would go on, but it only continues to get more and more eclectic...
i might end up adding to this list later on lol
Kind of off the subject, but my aunt was the woman singing "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" alongside Elton John in The Lion King. Didn't do much for her career, though.
"Oh, what have I done of note? Oh, nothing. I only sang in the third highest grossing animated feature of all time! With Elton John!!"
Oh yeah, and the first 25 seconds of Beef Face instrumental (as well as seconds 90-100) were totally schweet. I have... nothing to say about the rest of that piece. Nothing at all... :-|
Heh, you wait 'til you see me play it live... I literally bounce off the walls.
I need to, otherwise I'd fall over... Too much momentum, not enough control :P
I can imagine...
kindling- i have decided i love your music. you are forcing me to add you to my friends list. i no longer have any choice in the matter. you guys are just too awesome.
Why thank you, sdragon.... :)
That is quite the compliment
I'm confused...
I listen to and love far too many different bands and types of music to list, but i'll try to list some of my favourties. Just to give you an ide of how much, my computer has a good 120 or so gigs of music on it and i have a bunch more in vynil format (actually a lot more).
I listen to stuff from pretty much every genre and wil try pretty much anything suggested to me.
some all-time favourites: Ani Difranco, Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson, Sigur Ros, Zap Mama, Randy Newman, Skattelites and Gorrilaz.
Now, by genre. (these are all partial lists)
Hip-Hop: Outkast, Gnarls Barkley, Danger Doom (in fact anything involving Danger Mouse. that man is amazing), K-os, De La Soul, Blackalicious, A Tribe Called Quest.
Classic Rock: Dire Straits, The Band, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin.
Rock: (too many to count) Arcade Fire, Flaming Lips, Spiral Beach, Modest Mouse, Broken Social Scene, Metric, Wolf Parade, Rilo Kiley...
Post-rock/experimental: Explosions in the sky, Silver mount Zion, Mogwai, Drums and Tuba, Bell Orchestre, Do Make Say Think, Air.
World: Angelique Kidjo, Mouth Music, Battlefield Band, Yousou N'dour.
Dancing music is ska, hyperactive indie rock, funk, some electronica or hip-hop, and some heavier rock (alsmost metal, but not quite) for moshing.
As for myself, i play Guitar, saxophone, drums and trompbone, and have played (at least a bit) piano, bass (electric and stand-up), violin, trumpet, accordion, harmonica and musical saw. I also song and have written a few songs (but they really suck so no one but me has ever seen then).
Phantom of the Opera (Original Cast Recording)
The Eagles
Billy Joel
Emily Loizeau
Rod Stewart
Elton John
Pink Floyd
Les Miserables
Frank Sinatra
Erik Satie
Phantom of the Opera (Movie--No where near as good as the original, but I listen to it anyway)

That's aboot it, at least recently.

And, yes, Randy Newman.
New additions to the list:
Nas (specifically, Illmatic and Hip Hop is Dead)
Wu Tang Clan
2Pac
DANGERDOOM
Proof
Oh yes, Nas. How could I forget Nas (slaps self).
I'm not much of a rap man, but Illmatic is a masterwork.
Classical, Jazz, R&B, Swing, Showtunes, and old time rock n' roll are my thing.
Course, I do enjoy the occasional square dance and hoedown music. That one from BTTF3 rocks.
Techno, Pop, I'll do modern stuff too. Basically the only thing I can't stand is slow country and R.A.P.CRAP
oh, and I play a bari sax, if anyone wants to hear me just ask.
First cd I ever got: "... And Justice for All" by Metallica, which got followed by buying all of their cds, hehe. Heavy Metal (Metallica, AC/DC, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, that sort of thing) was what I listened to the most through the younger years of my life up to the time when I was 17 when I hit a Power Metal phase (a lot of Rhapsody), on to celtic metal and things like Cradle of Filth (But I always went back to Metallica every now and then)
I was 16 turning 17 during my first year of University, and slowly my taste changed due to my friends. I started listening to a lot of Zeppelin, Floyd and Deep Purple, to name a few. I also started listening to Hendrix, Santana (Eventually went to a concert, YAY), Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Oh, and we can't forget that crazy bastard Jethro Tull...
Last year I listened to a lot of Indie... Flaming Lips, Snow Patrol, Death Cab for a Cutie, Interpol, Athlete... (Plus the likes of Coldplay and Keane). And while I still consider it to be good music... I guess it sort of bores me.
My father is a big jazz man and ever since I can remember I've been listening to jazz kinda at the side (Like, not my main thing) until maybe 6 months ago to the point where I've changed to it full-time. I've always appreciated good melodies and musicians who own (liek teh pwnage kinda own) their instruments. They just blow me away and well, it's the only thing I'll listen to nowadays. The kind of jazz I listen to is mostly Smooth Jazz... but not the boring and unimaginative Kenny G kinda Smooth Jazz. Just to name a couple: Pat Metheny, Spyrogyra and Jean-Luc Ponty.
Oh and btw, any attempts to argue over how a band fits a certain genre or not (In my posts anyways) will be quickly dispatched with a Phantasmal Killer spell.
I have a pretty eclectic taste in music. My last playlist had, in no particular order:
Cradle of Filth
Disturbed
Bee Gees
Kate Bush
Doobie Brothers
Eminem
Tatu
Basement Jaxx
Evanescence
Dimmir Borgir
Gnarls Barkley
George Michael
Elton John
Rob Zombie
Prince
Hatebreed
Heart
Meatloaf

Quote from: AlexeiHere in England, 'pissed' is becoming americanized. It's used for either meaning these days.
Nurrr... not when I use it, nor basically everyone I know. Pissed = drunk. That is all. You must add a whole other word for it to mean angry. You MUST! Gods shave the Queen et cetera.
Cappercaillie
VNV nation
Jethro Tull
Sisters of Mercy
That's about most of it. I'm horrendously picky with music.
ElDo doesn't like my music choice, but I do, and I'm the one who has to listen to it. Anyway, favorite bands in o particular order.
Cute Is What We Aim For
Hellogoodbye
Fall Out Boy
All-American Rejects
The Killers
Something Corporate
The Postal Service
The Eels
Eminem
Meriwether
Avril Lavigne
A Perfect Circle
Red Hot Chili Peppers

Simple Plan
and that's all for now, I think my brain just started bleeding... x.
Quote from: SAIn general, give me anything but country. Give me country, and I give you MURDER.
Oh, and what he said ;)
I like upbeat music. If it has a high tempo I'll enjoy it. Slow stuff bores me.
I love Billy Joel, Queen, and Enya. My Chemical Romance is one of my favorites, I enjoy a bit of Muse, the Postal Service, Sublime, Sum 41, and things like that. I recently discovered the small time Irish rock band, Needfire. Flogging Molly never really took me, but Needfire does what I want.
Otherwise, I'm a violinist. I love a strong, hard, and catching violin piece. "If you wanna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band." (And yes, I live in Texas.)
Anything with Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, or Dennis Chambers on the drums

Well, in the last few posts, I've only seen a handful of bands I've even heard of. And maybe 2-3 I would listen to...At least we know the CBG brings lots of variety in tatse!

Very nice ones, those.
Currently at the top of my playlist:
Jay-Z/DJ Danger Mouse: The Grey Album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Grey_Album)
(Jay-Z vocals plus The Beatles instrumentals, all mixed my Danger? I'm in!)
Kanye West: The College Dropout (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_College_Dropout)
(Loads of fun and some seriously inspiring tracks. If you think rap is all gangsta, check out Kanye-- he's for everyone. I saw two old women, probably in their 60's, come to the rap section at my local Borders to pick this up.)
Nas: Stillmatic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stillmatic)
(One Mic and Ether are genius)
Makaveli: The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Don_Killuminati:_The_7_Day_Theory)
(Tupac Shakur's last work recorded in its entirety prior to his death. Darker and more thuggish than most of his work, it's still an amazing and haunting literary achievement.)
2Pac: Me Against the World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_Against_the_World)
(Pre-drama, prior to the arrests and the faux thug persona, this album marks an introspective look into Pac's life. Dear Mama is one of my favorite tracks on any album.)
Dr. Dre (and many, many others): The Chronic 2001 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_(album))
(Presenting classics such as a fiending Eminem on What's the Difference and Forgot About Dre, as well as Bang, Bang and The Next Episode, the good outweighs the trite in this soundclash)
Outkast: Stankonia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stankonia)
(What else to say except: André 3000, Ms. Jackson, and loads of fun?)
There are loads more that I'm not feeling right now, but those are my current favorites.
Always a good thread to revive.
Currently on major rotation in the Lil' Monsta (Sansa):
Lagwagon: Trashed
NOFX: Punk in Drublic
Propaghandi: Less Talk, More Rock
Face to Face: Eponymous album
Yeah, I'm on a bit of a punk kick right nowl
Hmm... I've never posted in this one it seems. Odd...
Anyway, I'm polyamorous when it comes to what kind of music I love.

I've recently been listening to a lot of Goo Goo Dolls, John Mayer, Matthew Good Band, and *SHOCK* Enrique Iglesias. Yes. I dared say.
Jay-Z, Lupe Fiasco, Common, Brother Ali, Immortal Technique, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Nas, and Black Star are currently sitting comfortably at the top of my playlist.

I often accidentally turn the last.fm plugin off, so it's not truely indicative of my taste, but gives a good general idea.

Bomb The Music Industry (http://www.bombthemusicindustry.com). Kindling, from what I remember of Zeikin, this might be up your alley. Best part is, almost all their stuff is on their own label, and everything on their label is donation-based. In other words, you're not paying a dime more then you feel you should have to (and hopefully not a quarter less).
Thanks for the recommendation! :)
In slightly related news, Zieken is kind of on an indefinite hiatus now, but our various members are now involved in numerous other bands and projects - Myself and the drummer are on the point of forming a new band with the working title Indian Child Circus.
For anyone who likes celtic music I would highly recommend a young lady by the name of Connie Dover. She is phenomenal!
