Title: Review Badges
Post by: Raelifin on December 02, 2006, 07:13:12 PM
[note]Okay, so this isn't so much a "wacky internet game" as an actual community idea. I'm sure the Opal council will move this thread to a better place if there is one.[/note]

I am disappointed in the failure of the Setting of the Week. It is a great idea for a guild that was, and is, intended to be a place where people actually take the time to read a world. I don't blame the SotW failure on any one thing, but I think it's important to keep the level of cross-pollination high with regards to our various worlds. In the spirit of this, I have an idea on an entirely optional way of increasing the number of reviews.

Setting creators would create badges for those who they felt helped with their setting. Reviewers would then stick these badges (icons, really) in their sigs as a way of showing that they contributed to the community as a whole. Dedicated reviewers would then be rewarded with a mighty sig that they could be proud of and perhaps some members would be inspired to go looking for settings to help out.

Let it be clear that I don't wish to make the badge more important to the setting. Reviewers should get a badge for actual help, not just a "good job" post. These should be points of pride, not collectors items. Someone who helps two settings from birth 'til death may have done much more than someone who has 5 badges.

This idea would be entirely optional for both setting builders and reviewers, so if someone has a problem, (s)he need not take part. I would assume the badges to be links to the setting and about the size of a smiley. Anyone have thoughts on the idea? We'd need several settings to take part for it to become a significant force, so please speak up if you think you might participate.

EDIT: If you make a review badge, please add it to the wiki: http://thecbg.org/wiki/index.php?title=Review_Badges

I definitely like this idea, but I don't know how it would work, technology-wise (please forgive my illiteracy as to such matters).  How do you go about creating an badge?  How do you give it to someone else?  Once they have it, I know how they would put it in their sig, but I don't know how they'd get it.

You might want to PM badges to reviewers and/or set higher standards; it's up to you. Setting creators would create an icon in paint, photoshop or whatever.

there are several members that are photoshop literate (off the top of my head, i can think of LC, and i believe ElDo. also, i know a thing or two with photoshop, and it's possible there's even more), so if you're not sure how to make your own badge, i imagine you could ask one of these members.

once you have the badge designed, you can use an image-hosting site (photobucket and imageshack are the two most popularr, but i believe we can host images here, too) to get a link for it, and you give the link to members that earn the badge.

it seems like it would be on the honor system, but i, personally, don't think there will be much-if any- of an issuee with illegitimately gained badges. that said, if anybody feels worried that people might steal badges, it would be as easy as including a list of members that earned the badge in the setting (or discussion) thread.

edit- are there going to be any standardized guidlines for the badges? the one i made for Xiluh is considerabley larger then the one you showed....

I would recommend making a 22x22 sized badge, just to keep things consistent. It'll look snazzy having a whole line of them the same size.

Post by: Ishmayl-Retired on December 02, 2006, 09:29:37 PM
I think it's a good idea.. just keep in mind, it's a good idea that, at least on one level, has been tried before.  I made a news announcement saying that I would be asking "Showcasers" who they thought gave them the most useful review while they were on Showcase, and said reviewer would recieve a special badge.  Out of the four people I asked, each one of them basically gave the same answer, which was, "Well, since only one person reviewed me, I guess it's him."  It just seems to me that bribery doesn't work 'round these parts for some reason, but maybe you'll have more luck with it than I did.

failing 22x22, can we try for for something closer to 150x75 (its WxH, right?)?

and regardless of whether or not this pans out for the entire guild, i think it's still something worth my effort to continue for Xiluh....
Title: Review Badges
Post by: Ishmayl-Retired on December 02, 2006, 10:30:35 PM
150x75 is rather large... if someone won 3 badges, that would quickly take up the entire page and make signatures pretty large... I would stick with smaller than that, but larger than 22x22 (which is pretty small).  Maybe something like 50x50?

Post by: Elven Doritos on December 03, 2006, 12:17:40 PM
I think 22x22, while a pain in the butt, has some precedence. It's about the size of a lot of smileys, and it's small enough to NOT be obnoxious-- I recommend that people working with 22x22 use Paint and keep with very simple concepts.

Okay, I'll be keeping the height at 22 so that they can all be kept in a line, but I'll probably expand a bit in width so that I can put some words in.

Officially now comes the Silver Tortoise Award (STA).  This award will be given to certain people as I see fit based on the following criteria.

 - Giving excellent reviews on anyone's campaign.

 - Recruiting new members to the CBG.

 - Just being a swell guy (or gal) and making everyone's experience here at the CBG a positive one.

And by the way, I will be starting now... if I retro-awarded everyone I deemed worthy, it would end up being most of the site, and that's just boring ;)

Cheers!

A quick suggestion:

I propose we set up a strong recommendation that these badges be used as links leading to the appropriate campaign thread. That way, a person putting a badge in their sig is further promoting the setting they've contributed to by linking other people to it.

Also, it means badge image designers have less pressure to unequivocably identify a world in a small graphical space, since anyone can click on any badge just to see where the link takes them. For example, if I know that any time an image appears, it'll like to the Jade Stage thread, I'm not going to have to worry about cramming the words "Jade Stage" into a 22x22 pixel square.

Excellent thinking, LC.  When I send people their badges, I'll go ahead and type up all the info they need so they don't even have to think about  it.
Cheers!

If someone could whip up a Dystopia badge, I would darn well flattered.  I can't for the life of me think what it should look like, except that the stylised "D" [-)-] should probably be in it.  Not necessarily, though.

That's odd. It's a green square with a curved, paler green stripe running through it. (It happens to be the 20x20 square in the top right corner of my user avatar, with a 1 pixel border on all sides.)

What would you guys recommend for SHadowfell?  I have a few ideas, but they seem either too abstract, or too hard to do in a 22x22 space.

Quote from: Hint #1 explainedAs I mentioned when Phoenix Knight couldn't view the icon properly, you've all seen it before. It's the top right corner of my avatar image.

Crit suggested flipping the icon vertically so that the pale stripe would be "smile-oriented," so that it would look like the curved edge of a stage as viewed from the audience (probably in the balcony seats, I'd guess, at that amount of curve.)

I suggested that the icon in its current orientation, with the pale stripe "umbrella-oriented", resembles the curved edge of a stage as viewed from on the stage. This is not any kind of brilliant thing I had pre-planned, but it fits well with the ideas I had in mind when using the word "stage" as part of the name of my setting. Also, now that Crit pointed it out, I really can't see the 22x22 icon as an abstract shape anymore-- it just looks like the edge of a stage to me.
For the Shadowfell icon, why not put an inky grey or violet blot on a pale background? Simple shape with a lot of striking color contrast, and fairly iconic of your setting (if shadowfells are representative enough to be the setting's namesake, why not the setting's icon as well?) I'm thinking, perhaps a concave sky shape at the top of the icon, and a convex shadowfell shape at the bottom, so that it looks like we're viewing the very top of a distant shadowfell on the horizon?

I start with 22x22, I can work with small spaces more easily.  So I've got one vote for horizontal and one vote for diagonal; anybody else have an opinion? :)

Edit: If fitting in with the theme is good, then I can easily modify the diagonal one if that's neccessary:

The white lines are not really "lines"  I just took an image of shadows that I found by googling "shadows" and cut out a 22x22 section of it.  Not very creative, but I'm having trouble figuring out someting to do for my badge.  I don't necessarily even want to go the whole black/gray route; darker blues and purples would probably fit my new site very well.

If someone with actual artistic skills can design one for me, what I would want is actually pretty simple but beyone my skills: a red sword on a black background. Could someone help?

Quote from: Phoenix KnightYeah, I didn't even want to attempt to make a crystal.  ElDo made the one I use for Kishar.  I'm very fond of it, though the ones by Stargate and Raelifin are nice, too.
Mithridates made the other one, not me. Can't take credit where credit isn't due.

And don't worry about changing th color of it guys, The orange one has grown on me. Thanks for your help.

Thanks stargate

Quote from: MithridatesJaerc, the second one looks promising, but a little ill-defined... making the "moon" (where is that?) more obvious might help.  Give me a link to your stuff and I'll see what I can do.

Stargate, I'm thinking something crystalline, since that seems to be a big focus so far...  I will look into this too.

I like it.  Very...Well I don't know what it is very, but I like the design.  Kind of mesmeric, maybe that's the word I want...

Well that would explain it.

I've got another homebrew, needs a badge, if anyone would want to contribute again.

Hello all. I'm bumping this thread to remind new people to please add their badges to the wiki. It helps to have a comprehensive list of these things, and I can't catch all of them.

Wiki link: http://thecbg.org/wiki/index.php?title=Review_Badges

Thanks,

This thread has been dead since June.  That's sad!  I can't let something as golden as this rest in peace, on dear no.  I must give it life!

I say that partially because I just made a new badge for Tephra.  I discovered Photoshop ImageReady, which lets me make animated gifs, so I had quite a blast.
