Everyone loves a good button masher. From the old-school to the new, from side-scrollers to versus, there are literally hundrends to choose from.
Personally, I like the Tekken series, but my absolute favorite is the Guily Gear series.
So, what are everyone else's favorite fighting game series?
Capcom vs. SNK 2: EO. Street Fighter + King of Fighters = Win.
And Soul Calibur!
Wow.
I read this and realized I haven't played a fighting game since Mortal Kombat.
Though it was always my hands down favorite.
I seem to remember liking various Marvel Superheros arcade games, but I'm not sure if they were ever on any console systems. I liked Tekken 3 a lot when it first came out as well.
I suck at all videogames, but I do prefer fighters to FPS.
With FPS I always have to setup the controller on this psychotic, bastardized southpaw or I end up staring at the ceiling in a corner somewhere.
Whereas with fighters I can button mash or chain square or whatever.
The only legitimate fighting game: Streets of Rage. Yes. The original. Not 3, not 2. Number ONE.
Kickass.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUL CALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIBER!
to tell the truth, i haven't played many, and enjoy all that i do, so this preference is based on not having played many.
SOOOUUUULLL caliber, 2.
one of the main reasons i got an x-box, actually.
mortal kombat was great (the first one.... i really didn;t care for 2 or 3), as was virtua-fighter, and the tekken series, early on. i can't help but notice yoshimitsu of tekken was in soul caliber, which makes me wonder where, exactly, the connection lies.
another good fighter that i imagine nobody on this side of my existance ever heard about was star gladiator. yes, it was most definately a star wars knock-off, (the hero with the plasma sword, the helmeted and armoed BBEG in black with a big plasma sword, the hot chick with strange hair, the large anthropomorphic alien, the small, weird-looking alien...), but it was still cool. all the characters (except for that dinosaur dude..) had plasma weapons, and some of the combos were really cool.
Bah! Tekken is overrated, though it is a great game. Soul Calibur is also great, I only have 2, not 1 or 3.
SUPER!!! SMASH!!! BROTHERS!!! Melee!
My favorite console game of all time, without a doubt. Mario fighting against Link! Princess Zelda squaring off against Princess Peach. Ganondorf against Bowser. Throw in a few Pokemon, a pink creampuff and a little kid, Starfox and crew, a bounty hunter and space racer, and a few, until recently, obscure Japanese-only RPG characters. Then, with the upcoming SSB Brawl, you get to add another old-school kid, a deadly spy/assassin/soldier guy, a big fat nega-Mario, and a crazy sword-wielding knight, and who knows who else, and you'll get one heck of a game. And, in my opinion, it's leagues better than any of the Tekken or Soul Calibur or Mortal Kombat games. But, then again, it is a different style of fighting game from those.
Also, a close second in the fighting games, I really enjoy Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. It's really an underrated game. Interesting storyline, alternate paths, and great versus mode. My favorite aspect is the semi-destructible environment and the fact that you can just almost constantly chuck stuff at your enemy with the right character. AND it's got my two favorite Marvel characters in it: Spiderman and Iron Man. Greats such as the Hulk, Captain America, and the Punisher, however, do not make an appearance, for storyline reasons.
Soul Calibur 2 is my favourite. Simple yet effective, and very accessible (I don't play much so that's an advantage to me; we often play this game at one of my friends' place before a DnD-game).
Super Smash Brothers is cool because of the characters, though I find the amount of items and events that are being thrown around just a little too high, going from funny into annoying.
Note that I haven't actually played any other fighting games (at least, no more than once or twice).

You know you can turn off items, or at least turn them down, in the options area right? I prefer medium items with only the Beam Sword, Poke Ball, Ray Gun, Energy Bazooka thing, Homerun Bat, and Mr. Freezie. And Hyrule Temple is a completely stagnant level, and it's the biggest, so no crazy random events and minimal weapons. Just some advice to make the game more fun. ;)
I haven't played many fighters lately. I used to like Tekken 3, and way back, I liked Street Fighter 2.
I had Killer Instinct for N64, but it wasn't that great.
I loved Bushido Blade 1&2, though they are not traditional fighters.
i keep checking this thread with the high hopes (but low expectations) of somebody quoting my mentioning of star gladiator. really, it was a suprisingly decent game.
I love Soul Calibur (2 and 3) for the "realism", and Guilty Gear for the shear awesomeness (anime + heavy metal + magic = win). Oh, and of course Super Smash Bros.

I didn't know you could turn off items, though the person I play the game with is a great fan of them, and it's his game. :( Another reason I dislike the game: he keeps kicking my ass. :)
And yes, Hyrule Temple is my favourite level. ;)

'Fraid I've never even heard of it.
