Please post ALL questions, comments, and concerns about the new Campaign Setting Hosting options here in this thread. Also, any bugs you find, post here. Cheers!
who all is planning on using the hosting section?
if no one uses them, we're soooo gonna be pissed. >:O
Eh. I semi-signed up, but I already have a website. So not me.
Thanks for the effort, though. I'm sure someone will.
sorry
ok, specifically to Nat20.
at first, i had a snide comment on here about image maps, but i've re-thought my post.
the 'too little too late' commen bothered me a little, because frankly it's rude.
i have been working on the CS hosting for a decent amount of time, and chances are no one would have even done it if I hadn't stepped up. It also took me a decent bit of time to get working right, and i've spent a couple of days on this specific project.
im not pissed that you've hosted somewhere else... in fact, i dont care, its less shit i have to support.
but telling me that what i've worked hard on was 'too little' is a kick that i'm not willing to take.
so good luck with future request. ;)
-peace.
.
I've also edited my previous comment, in the spirit of giving the "benefit of the doubt" to the community, and I hope that there's some more positive response from the people who have been requesting this addition for quite some time now....
I apologize if that sounded rude, and quite frankly I might have passed judgement too soon. I appreciate your effort on it, and if I make any more settings, I will almost certainly host them here. Sorry if my response sounded as bad as it apparently did, but nobody can ever tell what you mean by something over the internet.

its ok really, i understand that you were just using an idiom that may not have been appropriate. And i want you to know that i wont hold it against you (at
all.)
it just didnt settle with me well. you know, .... when you feel like your efforts have been for nothing?
and i know that you weren't the only one to benefit from this addition, i just wanted you to know that i had worked hard. ;).
no hard feelings.
yeah. I'm only here for a bit, but I'm definatly going to be using it - I voted for it, after all, and I'm a fan of it. (Plus it'd be nice to have it hosted.) I need more work done before I start putting stuff up, but I'll try to have enough to start using the hosting area by next weekend.
Hey, I'll definitely be using this, except that I can't seem to be able to get in. You need to use your regular login and password right? It doesn't seem to accept mine :'(
can you describe exactly what it does, turin?
probably says 'incorrect login' ..
but it might have to do with using non-standard characters in your login name.
let us know what its telling you, incase im wrong.
did a test...
its not the special characters (at least not the ÃÆ' or Ã,º .)
but if you're typing ' Túrin ' thats the wrong name..
in the database your name is ' TÃÆ'Ã,ºrin ' .. so you could try using that.
Ah that was it. Thanks daggerhart! So do I type TÃÆ'Ã,ºrin each time I log in or is there some way around that?
umm... the actual problem is that the database is using a Swedish encoding... so i dont think it likes your characters.
i would recommend changing your 'login name' in your profile to something with standard characters. (like ' Turin ' )
it wont affect the way we see your name. just your login.
I didn't even know we could change our login names... i just thought the appearance name was all we could change.
Quotethe actual problem is that the database is using a Swedish encoding
swedish[/i]. it should be unicode.
I will deffinately use this for Sulos, once I figure out how to do it. I'll have to play around with it for a while, and will probabaly have to ask many annoying questions, but I think without this feature, I'd never be able to realistically post Sulos in any way that does it justice. Monday I'm going to play around with it, and see if I can figure it out.
Forgive me if it takes me a little while to get it right. I have zero experience using HTML. I'm an eager cadet though.
-Nasty-
It's cool; ask all the questions you want. Just keep in mind, that for the most part, you don't even have to know html for this little thing to work; it pretty much does all the work for you.

Quote from: nastynateTo quote Paris Hilton, "That's Hawt."
I wonder what the number of times is someone must quote Paris Hilton before I lose any and all respect for their opinions. I don't think it's a high number (high being defined here as, say, above two). Oh well.
[on topic] I'm pretty sure I can't change my login. If so, how do I go about doing it?
So I tried to put some of Orden's Mysteries in the hosting part. It's looking very good, so thumbs up for that. Here's a few questions:
How are you supposed to navigate to other people's CSes? I was able to get to other people's directories by removing the 12 in the address bar of my browser, but there doesn't seem to be any other way to navigate the Hosting area. It also seems to be impossible for non-members to get to the Hosting area (the link requires you to log in).
I suppose this works best if you use multiple files (rather than putting everything in OrdensMysteries.html). Any guidance on how to do this?
To cheer things up a little, I tried to use the background colouring option, but it only coloured the selected area. Even if I selected all text, it only coloured the area around the text, rather than the whole page. Any way to get the actual background coloured?
Thanks for providing this service here. I think this could come to look very good.
;) Túrin
we haven't made a way to view the pages yet.. im still kind of brainstorming on that.
it would be easy just to say 'submit your links to the links section' but i dont think thats good enough... so im going to try to work out an auto-mated system that can detect when a person has started a CS, and link to it automatically.
of course, the problem with that is that everyone's page would be linked to, whether they thought it was 'ready' or not.
sooo, let me know how you would rather do it.
as for the background color,
there is a button on the editor (between 'tables' and 'links') that says 'toggle HTML source'
at the very top, you can add
but thats really a one-time fix , so you better like the color choice. (you can use hexidecimal also)
or something..
ill give a better answer later, i need to fix some things.
Hey thanks again.
As for the linking: people have access to all the files that are present anyway (just type www.thecbg.org/settings) so I think it should just be changed so that a) there is a link on top of the welcome screen that leads to www.thecbg.org/settings, b) those pages look a little better, and c) if possible, that the owner of a directory can decide which files are "clickable" (i.e. can be opened directly by clicking them in the directory, probably just the index file). That's just my two cents.
Túrin
Quotec) if possible, that the owner of a directory can decide which files are "clickable" (i.e. can be opened directly by clicking them in the directory, probably just the index file).
MAKE an index file, and people will only be able to see the index file. (then make the index link to pages you want public). the only reason you can browse the directory is because there's no index.htm/index.html.
we can also keep people from browsing the settings directory by putting in an index, but i dont think thats a problem, really.
So if any one of the files in my directory is called index.html then anyone who types www.thecbg.org/settings/12 will be automatically directed to that file and will not be able to view any other files, is that correct?
Edit: the "rename file" function doesn't seem to work. It says:
Fatal error: Undefined class name 'self' in /home/.tallyho/shadowfell/thecbg.org/stuff/phpedit/includes/Entry.inc.php on line 180
Yes, you would want your main page to be your index.html. It would have links to other pages, rough sketches of the campaign, etc, or whatever you want, but it will be the first page that anyone sees.

I've mentioned this to daggerhart in case he hasn't seen it yet.
Hey dudes, just letting you know that I will doubtlessly be using setting hosting here, and I will keep you posted about any exciting quirks I encounter along the way.
I don't know how easy this would be, but is it possible for there to be a site where visitors and non-members can view our sites? Perhaps when you click on Hosting, you are given a prompt: "Login" or "View Settings"
Second off, I currently have two different folders, one for each setting, with more to come. If I put an "Index.html" file in each of them, would that make each one its own seperate setting? (has no idea how any of this works and is totally lost) Perhaps make it easier for each member to make multiple settings, if what I am doing is wrong somehow.
Xanthan, if you have 2 separate folders, then creating an index.html file in each of them will give you 2 unique web pages. You're on the right track.
QuoteI don't know how easy this would be, but is it possible for there to be a site where visitors and non-members can view our sites?
um, right now, what you put in there is technically viewable by the entire internet--but no one but us is actually going to view it. don't worry about not posting stuff that's unfinished or whatever, but don't like, try to use it to host your private diary of criminal misdeeds, because it's in no way secure, and that's probably how they'll stay.
We're not quite sure yet how we're going to provide (more convenient) links to those sites, but it'll probably either be an autogenerated list of links to every occupied hosting folder, or a page where ya'll submit links to what you've got--probably with a description and all that. (so if you had two 'subsites', you'd just post two links.)
The background thing doesn't seem to work yet. If I paste the code you proposed into the file (in text-format) it disappears after saving and loading a few times, and if I paste it in the editor-format, it doesn't do anything (which makes sense I guess).
Also, did you get the renaming fixed? (It's minor but useful.)
;) Túrin
Edit: Yay! Everything on my WotC-thread has been copy-pasted here now! Everyone come take a look. Now in unorganized chaotic form! Check it out now before I make it all orderly and stuff!
yeah. ive been tooo bent up to code, i think daggs had work :(
So I've been working on this. I'm trying to make it look all webpage-like. Check it out here (http://www.thecbg.org/settings/12/OrdensMysteries.html). Uhm... please?
Edit: uhm... oops. If I open the page in a window (that is, a non-full screen window) it looks all messed up. Any way to fix that?
Hmmm, what are you trying to do with the orange up top, Turin? Also, if you know html, you can probably set the page to variable widths, but that may be more complicated than you're interested in.
The orange is just to accentuate the links at the top. What's more important is that I want the links to be displayed next to each other (rather than under each other) even in window displays. Preferably without having to learn html to do it ;).
Okay, I'll play around with it and see if I can come up with a non-html way to do it :)
Aww man that look so nice Turin (even rough like it is). I don't know how I could do that with Sulos...it seems overwhelming. Sulos is huge, and it took me like two hours just to put it all into a normal thread. The hosting feature is intimidating to me as it is, and given the amount of stuff I'd be putting into it, I'm not sure I can do it.
-Nasty-
I'm getting started on putting up my setting. The first thing I will put up is my mana system, formatted for standard D&D/d20; this is my crowning achievement and I want to share it with everyone.
Currently there is a problem. Every time I save a file, it is converted instantly to double spaced. I don't want it to be double spaced; how can I fix this.
By the way, a big thanks to the webdesigners here for all their work.
Xeviat, that's a problem I haven't seen... what browser are you using?
As a note... that sounds a LOT like the problem I had with my HTML editor when I used IE. Converting to Firefox solved it.
I'm using IE; Firefox wouldn't even let me copy/paste. Maybe if I paste it in with IE, save it, then come back with Firefox ...
I had some trouble getting the spaces right when I copy-pasted stuff as well. I did eventually get it right though (as far as I know).
Edit: I use IE.
Yeah, I"m not sure what that hole C&P thing is with Firefox; I just typed all my stuff out when I was testing. Maybe everyone should just switch to Opera ;)
First, you have me switching to Firefox. Now you want me to switch to Opera?
Teh madness!!!1!1!one!11one11eleventy1one
I'm looking into why Firefox does that nonsense. I think there's probably some sort of checkbox in your Firefox options that lets you enable/disable that junk. I'll let you know.
No, they need you to create some file thingy to do it. I don't get the file creation process, and I keep doing it wrong, so I can't get it to work.
I like the idea of just copy/pasting using IE, then editing using Firefox.
Okay guys, you should probably read this for the whole C&P thing.

I worked on mine and found that, indeed, I had the malware on my computer, and I fixed the registry, and now everything is working fine. However, I cannot stress enough, that you should not mess with your registry unless you feel confident doing so. But first, maybe just wait a little while for the Mozilla upgrade to 1.5.4 (or whatever) and see if that fixes it.
how the hell do i write in the hosting. I've messed around with .html files, but I don't know html! Mostly I'm only doing text anyway, but without the use of my precious enter key, things just look sloppy!
it's just like the microsoft .html editor thinger... it's easy, u just write. Just remember to put yourdocumentname.html. Oh yeah, hte font is kinda screwy sometimes too.
Okay, I've been trying to use the hosting feature but it keeps screwing around with my text... here's an example...here (http://www.thecbg.org/settings/11/Section_4_Prestige_Classes/Academy_Spirit_Warrior.html)
That's the best I can get it... I used the html format, is there something else I can use?
I'm not sure I see where it's screwing around with your text...
At the bottom
One day when we have time, the Opals are gonna have to go thru the editing system and tell it to act right. That day is going to be a very, very long day. Probably several days. :(
so we can't just make .doc or .txt? I miss my enter key. It keeps my information organized.
I can keep paragraphs seperate.
Like this.
No, but if you make it .html, you can use it pretty much like you would MS word. Just download google toolbar, and you have spellcheck. If you have trouble with paragraphing formating, just type it up in Word and copy/paste it over, I fixed 99% of my formatting errors that way.
I finally got around to trying to use the editor the editor yesterday, and I encountered two main issues.
1. The button for background color is faulty, it merely highlights text.
2. When I write in my own code, the editor deletes it if I go back and edit the file after saving it with my custom html in it.
I want to know if anyone else has managed to edit their background colors successfully, or how to directly import text files and save them as html.

In HTML, you just use the
<p>
tag when you want a paragraph break like that, or the
<br>
tag when you want a line break without skipping a line.

For your background woes you could wrap your whole page in a 100% wide and 100% tall table with a background color.
That's what I did here (http://www.thecbg.org/settings/30/index.html)
If you use the editor and not the html source mode to align everything you will have to go into HTML source mode and change the Font background styles. Unless of course you pick one of their background colors first and then apply that color to the wrapping table.
On this page (http://www.thecbg.org/settings/30/Tirein.html) I used the editor and just copied from word and then bolded a few things, so when I put a wrapping table in there the text had a white background (I picked a random color for the background color). I fixed some of the text blocks and left the rest like they were so you can see what I am talking about. I will be on AIM later tonight if you need help.
edit: I have since editted these pages, so their examples don't work anymore.
Here is how to setup firefox to allow the copy and paste to work with the hosting section's editor.
Firefox copy and paste access settings (http://www.mozilla.org/editor/midasdemo/securityprefs.html)
First off, I just want to say that I am rather new to this site and I am still trying to figure out how to use the site hosting section. Now, I have been building my site with Front Page and when I try to copy the source code into phpEditme I lose my pages theme. Can the editor not handle themes or am I doing something wrong?
