I remember someone just recently being praised for hosting a campaign setting in the Hosting section of the CBG and was in the mood to go take a look again, but where is it? Who was hosting that page and what's its URL?
Am I just being too silly to miss an obvious link to a list of campaign settings hosted here at the CBG, or is there really no way to even investigate what settings are and are not in the Hosting section?
Until then, if anyone is hosting a campaign setting in the CBG Hosting section, feel free to post a link here so I know it exists and can figure out how to get there.
I found Kishar (http://www.thecbg.org/settings/137/index.php) just by going to our main settings page. LC's is currently in development... Other than that, Turin has Orden's Mysteries (http://www.thecbg.org/settings/12/) and I have... uh, a a very lengthy speculative fiction/item history (http://www.thecbg.org/settings/2/charlemagne.html) from a flopped d20 Modern campaign.
Yeah, I think that covers most of the material that can be found in the Hosting section, though it's been a while since I browsed it. Unless someone posts a link somewhere, I don't really think there's a way to tell whether or not any particular poster has made use of the Hosting section.

i will, eventually. my plans are to grab the code from my failed geocities page on Xiluh (the login info got changed on me >.<), clean it up a bit, and build upon it. hopefully Xilh will eventually have its own site hosted here!
edit- oh my.... somebody should've told me geocities complicated their codes. now i'm really going to have to touch up on my web coding....
I was playing with it back when I posted Tirein. I think Tirein is there, but in a state of disarray because I was testing something to answer a question about the hosting section.
Originally, I was just going to use web-format as a better way to organize my own notes. But as I worked on it more, I decided to link to Kishar to get feedback on the ideas.
I find the interlinked webpage format a much easier way to organize information than a book. For example, if I'm talking about an important character, I can give him/her his own minipage complete with a bio and just link to it. With a book, I'd probably just have to have a chapter on people. With a series of posts on a forum, it becomes even more complex if you have lots of material (though for some settings I've seen it work very well, and it's great for the earlier stages).
It does, however, seem like settings posting in the forum get slightly more reviews than those on webpages, but that could be a misperception.
I'm definitely in agreement with Phoenix Knight about the benefits of HTML for organization. Having multiple pages which can be linked freely back and forth gives your work a lot more fluidity than putting it in a thread, which is only presented linearly.
Also, despite our lovely and useful markup code on the boards here, the design flexibility offered by a webpage is really thrilling. Part of the appeal is not only presentation of information, but doing so in a beautiful format. (I :yumm: CSS.)
I didn't realize the hosting section was so scarcely used. I know we can't twist anyone's arm and force them to use it, but it's still quite a shame. I am still kicking myself for how long it took me to get around to using it; I should have gotten on that train much eariler.

LC, you can add your setting through the Links tab (the Homebrews section).
One idea is that, like the review badges, we could have a wiki page dedicated to linking to each hosted page. That way the authors of various pages can present a link when they are ready for traffic. Perhaps the hosting section could have a link to such a wiki page?

EDIT: Whoops, Phoenix's post clarifies that there is no need for a wiki. Please ignore my slow-posting. ;)
Quote from: Luminous CrayonAdmins, would it be possible to make a collected list of settings that are in the Hosting section, so we can see who's using it and easily browse their pages? Maybe in addition to the login prompt we see when we click the "Hosting" tab at the top of the site, we could also place a list of settings being Hosted by other members? Would it be possible to set it up so that people can work on their code privately for a time, then add their setting's link to that list when they feel comfortable doing so?
i'm not an admin, but IRC, this was discussed at one point. i think we decided that, when the member was ready with their site, they could post the link in the 'Links' section. feel free to take a look :)

How did I not notice that, seriously? I will go sit in the corner and wear the dunce cap now.

Not strictly necessary, I suppose, but it might be an interesting format for reader comments and questions, and writer responses-- essentially as a replacement for a comments thread. Has anyone tried using a wiki in such a way?
A few related questions:
If I upload an image to the CBG, where is it stored? (I see that the Kishar banner is in the "e107_files/public" directory; is that where all uploaded files go?) Is there any way to instead upload an image to a specific folder created using the Hosting section?
I'm simultaneously posting Ifpherion (thread link in sig) to a thread and to different hosting pages. Right now, I haven't even linked the seperate hosting pages.
But soon i'm going to be making a whole new website (I just bought a big book on HTML) and importing it into the hosting section.

According to the FAQ, you can't upload into a specific folder. I believe that is where all uploaded files go, yes.
New question. Is there a way to move a file from one subdirectory within your hosting area to another, without just creating it anew and deleting the old version?
Not that I know of. I've always just deleted and re-created.
Yeah... that stems from the whole "We never really got to the point of making uploaded files available, due to the general lack of use the Hosting section received" thing :)
Ah. More people are using now, though. I've been using it a lot. So if enough begin, do you think you will implement the ability to import files directly to our own hosted section?
Quite possibly... it just depends on what kind of use it gets over the next couple months, I suppose.

I never got around to using the Hosting section due to the general lack of interest in adding functionality. It's a viscious circle. x.
:axe: (Man, that green guy is one viscious circle.)
Okay, other question:
I uploaded an image. (Yay!) The message says it'll be hosted after it's reviewed by admins to make sure it's appropriate. (My "jade stage" banner is so controversial!)
How do I know when it's uploaded, and how do I know what the image url is for use in my code?
Realistically, it should already be there... I'll check.
LC, it's there, here's the link to it:
http://www.thecbg.org/e107_admin/filemanager.php?e107_files/public/1168657327_jadestage.gif
If you would like, I can rename it. That's something that you have the option of doing when you upload it, but a lot of people miss that somehow.
Yes, could you chop the numbers off that filename, please?
For some strange reason, that link is sending me back to thecbg.org. Is there a way to look at all the files I've uploaded?
Sorry 'bout that, I linked you to my admin file manager, which it doesn't allow you to see... here's your link:
http://www.thecbg.org/e107_files/public/1168657327_jadestage.gif
and I'll chop those numbers.
Here you go:

Thanks so much.
