Title: Shadow's Rising PBP (IC thread)
Post by: Captain Obvious on January 31, 2007, 10:27:25 PM
[ic=The Town of New Helios]
Another day in the bustling market city of New Helios. In the merchant's quarter which hold both the major marketplaces and the main visitor's district is crowded as ever. Mercahants hawking their wares abound and caravans have come from all corners of Eltabar as well as other more exotic locales. All seems cheerful and as it should be. However off to the sides you can spot alleyways that remain dark even at midday, defaced with grafiti and strewn with trash not seen on the spotless main streets.
Staring at you from the side of a stall is a sobering sight - a poster with the comely visage of a young woman and the word "Mising" scrawled in shaky black lettering across the top. You have lost count of how many of these poorly made signs you have seen on your wanderings this day and in past days. None seem to ever stay up long, as evidenced by small crumpled piles sitting in dark corners where they have been thrown.
Up ahead you notice a group gathering around a much larger poster. This one is much better made and is adorned with a richly dressed middle-aged man and many words including "Missing", "Lord Frederick Bellid" and "Reward". The gathered crowd is far more mixed than the surrounding shoppers, and many look to be battlehardened mercenaries.
Then, a stocky unkempt man from the front speaks up.[/ic]
[ic=Man]"Whut does it say? Somebody read it. Has is lordship gorn missin too?"[/ic]
[ooc]Try to keep this as a primarily IC thread. If you have any random other queries, please PM me or post them in the OOC thread.
Please include a spoilerized version of your character sheet (and background, etc) with your first post.
The Town (New Helios) is a medium sized town just north of the southern forests, and a good few days hard ride from the capital of Luthton. For the most part is is heavily patrolled by the Redcloaks (the local watch), and they frown upon troublemakers. Also, while in market areas, one is only permitted to (openly) carry a single one handed weapon and it must remain sheathed.
The first set of IC info is general for all of you. It would vary slightly, but then merge at the large poster part. You do not know each other at the moment, but you all join the crowd at roughly the same time. You can make your own decisions on whether you just arrived in town or are currently staying here or live here. Just include this info in the first reply's ooc part.

And awaaaay we go! :yumm: [/ooc]

Also guys, the first post doesn't have to be just your character. i was in fact thinking that you'd just include the character sheet with whatever your first IC post was.

Character Background and Description

Ankh was an experiment of a kind unseen before - a forgeborn melded into the Aeia Web. The experiment succeeded, and Ankh - a forgeborn with intense personality - was created. The savants let him on loan to the wizards' colleges (after much negotiation), but he was found to be near-incapable of focusing on any one subject. Eventually, the savants let him out on his own - to see what would occur next in his anomalous behaviour.

Well, let's get this thing going.

[ic=Daín Ironhammer]Among the crowd gathered around the sign, you can see a young (relatively) dwarf.  He has brown hair and a brown beard, kept in thick braids to keep it out of his way.  His blue eyes seem rather small, although that might be because of his deep-set features and bushy eyebrows.  He wears scale mail, covered with a tunic bearing the Ironhammer clan insignia.  At his side sits an immense hammer, covered in Dwarven runes.  As he stands there, attempting to view the poster,  "C'mon give me a look!" he shouts.  It appears to be all he can do to keep from letting his hammer work.[/ic]

[ic=Almax]A pair of white eyes watch the crowd forming from one of the darkened alleyways. Hmm, I'm sure there are a few pouches itching to be relieved from their captivity. Almax feels his pocket and decides he has enough to get by with for now. Might as well see what the commotion is about. The eyes raise about half a foot and turn a dull green. A human with a cloak hood covering his shoulder length black hair. He stands about 5'9" and has a slender build. He walks toward the crowd trying to figure out what is going on.[/ic]

[ic=Ankh]A large figure, wearing a long, dusty robe and a wide hood, stands silently at the back of the crowd. If you look too deep into his hood, you may believe you caught the glint of metal... but perhaps it was nothing. The creature stands totally still.[/ic]

[ic]A brightly dressed halfling wearing an eyepatch and a wide-brimmed hat speaks up.
"It says 'your mother, 6 copper.' One of their lordships 'as gone missin. Whatd'ya think it said?"
The large man turns to glare at the halfling once he catches on, but the tiny man just raises his brim and stare's back cooly out of his one good eye. [/ic]
[ic=@Dain]A large unshaven man in dirty leathers leans down and with a grin says
"Ooh, does the poor likkle stunty want a look. Wassa matter? Need a boost? Har har. Wait 'cher bloody turn." [/ic]
[ooc]@Voran: the [spoiler] at the start of your character sheet needs to be de-capitalized. that should make the s-block work.[/ooc]

[ic=Kevkas] A medium sized man sees the comotion. He is clad in some-what heavy armor, and looks to be youthful. As he approches the edge of the crowd he says, "What the hell is it this time...let me have a look. Move aside or I'll move ye, you bloody halfwits!".[/ic]

[ic=Ankh]The tall figure moves slowly to stand just behind Dain.

It speaks in a monotone: "Cease your hostilities, or I will cease them for you."[/ic]

[ic]Although much of the crowd has turned to watch the commotion at back of the crowd, many are still arguing about the poster and wild comments and accusations are flying back and forth.
"Yeah, when it's us people goin missin the couldn't care, but one a theirs? Call out the search parties."
"It's those damn swampies! This is what i'v been saying the whole time. Why doesn't anyone listen. The lizards took 'em all."
"Your crazy. How could they get in the city?"
"No, he's right. My cousin said he saw 'em comin out of the sewers."
"It was the devils! They've come back to get us in our sleep."
"Oh shut up. It couldn't be them, there's so many wards up, the devils couldn't set foot on this whole continent." [/ic]
[ic=@Ankh and Dain]The man slowly stands up too his full height - tall, but still a good head shorter than Ankh - and glances at who's addressing him from under the cloak. He leans in and whispers  "I'd be careful bout who you threaten in these here parts. There's many as don't like you 'chines. Wouldn't want it to get out that one of ya was attacking good law-abiding citizens, would we?" [/ic]
[ic=@Kevkas]A burly orc, in finely made clothes with aneatly groomed goatee, sizes you up and replies  "Ye best watch yir tongue, boy. If yeh wants ta keep it in yer head that is. Ye'll get yer turn. [/ic]

"That's crazy. They are cannibals."
"It's not technically canibalism if they aren't human."

[ooc]@golem: Much though i want that to be true (it was pretty hardcore awesome), i am going with the standard senses. However due to the fact that many do not know all the details of warforged then we could just say that Ankh was bluffing in hoes that the man doesn't know otherwise.
Also, were Dain's last words out loud? Please try to put all out loud speech in blue, thoughts in, i dunno, green or red or something and naration/descriptive text in plain old black. I'd just prefer to keep the system unified.[/ooc]
[ic]The people at the crowd are getting more and more worked up into a frenzy againgst the "damn lizards" and many have begun shouting for their allies to gather their weapons, and to gather other companions. The halfling begins to walk over to the tall man and begins to say
"Idiots though this crowd may be, perhaps we should follow this mob in case they happen upon something useful. Go gather the others. I will deal with your new friends. Tell Saeko to put his other work on hold."
The man glares at him for a sec, but then gives in and stalks off through the suddenly very busy crowd.

We'll investigate into who really did this. If it was the lizardfolk, they could attack again at any moment. You're town needs you to stay behind and guard it, as it seems you are some of the best fighters here. And besides, what would you think your Lord Frederick would want you to do: Chase after the lizardfolk on a whim that they took him and maybe get yerselves killed; or would he want you able-bodied men to stay behind and protect the town form other invaders? We will get him back for you, I promise."  He then bows to them, and as if  an afterthought adds,  "Besides, even if you are doing this for the reward, if all of you earn it how much will each of you actually get? [ic]The crowd of remaining people seem to agree wiht this idea and en mass beging to head towards the city gates with you. In addition to the halfling and his 4 companions, the others seem to have split themselves into 3 groups - four, four and five. They are walking ahead of you and the halflings allies, who are much nearer to you.
You manage to get a better look at them now. In addition to the halfling and the tall unshaven warrior-type, there is a slightly shorter man with bright red hair and robes the clour of aged wine. He walks with quite a swagger in his step, as if he own's whatever place he may be in. The woman is dressed in clothes that seem to be made of long black and purple lengths of cloth that are wrapped around her. There are always some ends dangling loose, but her graceful movements cause them to never seem to get in the way. The gnome wears a set of very utilitarian leather armour that is covered in extra straps, buckles and pouches. He has a dour look on his face, a large curved blade at his side and a strange gauntlet on his right hand.[/ic]
[ooc]If you guys wanna know about the other groups, just state who you wanna know about and likely move closer. [ic]Your group makes the short walk to the city gates and passes through more or less without incedent. The Redcloaks on gate duty give you some odd looks, but seeing as you are all leaving rather than trying to enter the city, they allow you to pass. Certain member of the other groups are speaking amongst each other and moving back and forth between the groups. Most of them seem to know each other, bu there are a few loitering near the edges. [/ic]
[ic=@Ankh]As you walk with the halflings group noone says much to you. Then the gnome walks over.  "There's something looking familiar about you. Were you made as part of that Project Rebirth thing? Cause my cousin's wife worked on that and somethin about yer design's looking familiar. Oh, my name's Kaebo by the way," he says, extending his hand. You get a better look at the gauntlet on his arm. It seems to consist mostly of a brace running along his forearm and is covered in small clamps, hooks and pins.[/ic]
[ic=@Kevkas, Almax and Dain]You notice the man in the red robes having a brief whispered conversation with Jorik and the man known as Ky, involving many glances over at the three of you. Then he walks over with a broad grin on his facew and adresses you.  "Hello my friends. Jorik has told me you all seem to have cool heads on your shoulders. This is very refreshing considering the company we have up there," he says gesturing at the groups ahead.  They're mostly idiots, but there's some bad one in that crowd. I'd be careful. [ic]Most of the people in the group seem to think this a reasonable idea, and those that want to simply forge ahead begin immediately demanding to be part of the scouts. A few people have volunteered to make the camp - Emirkol included amongst them. Jorik speaks up,  "We should arrange to have some signal to send up if we find the lizards. We'll also need to pick the groups. Kevkas, why don't you come with Kaebo and I. And you as well, Tinman. Hey, Dorian. Why don't you and Mikael go with Ky and the dwarf - sorry, i didn't catch your name.
At this point the well-dressed orc Dain quarreled with back in town breaks in.  "That's quite enough Jorik. We can make groups ourselves. I will lead one. Who goes with me? Moran and Dukaine, good, and you, the quiet one in the hood," he calls out to Almax,  "you'll come with us as well."

[ooc]The text in green is in orcish.
And the guy talking is a full-blood orc, not a half-orc. Orc are fairly common and accepted. They are frequently viewed as a primitive and backwards culture because they live as nomads and have a warrior culture based on individual stength for a large part. Honor and reputation are very important though.
Half orc and elves and whatnot, are fairly uncommon, but also can be between pretty much any race. not just humans and others. All half-breeds are done on a case by case basis. [/ooc]

[ooc]So the groups are (assuming no objections. Bring stuff up if you want to. These are just how they seem to be ending up):
Jorik, Kaebo, Kevkas and Ankh

Kolchak (the orc), Moran (a short dark haired man wearing a long coat), Dain and Almax (have you told them your name at any point during this? or are you being secretive)

Ky, the woman in the wrapped clothes,  an elf with vines twinned into his hair, and a female halfling wearing a simple brown dress.

Dukaine, a bald dwarf in merchant robes, and two more humans, one male wearing leather and one female in blue robes.

Staying at the camp: Emirkol, a female gnome, a male hobgoblin, and 3 more humans - 2 male and one female.[/ooc]

[ic]As those remaining behind try to find some dray land to set up camp, the four groups head off under the shady boughs of the swamp trees. It is not long before the other groups are all out of sight and the swamp and your companions are all you can see. Most of the marsh is shallow - about ankle or knee deep with a few deeper patches - but there are many dryer paths of semi-solid ground that can be traversed. Aside from the insects buzzing lazily around you and the sounds of your boots, all is quiet and peaceful.[/ic]
[ic=@Kevkas and Ankh]As you walk, the silence is broken often by Kaebo trying to start a conversation on any number of topics, whereas Jorik walks in silence. You notice that Jorik always seems to stand at his same height even when he walks into seemingly deep portions of the marsh.[/ic]
[ic=@Dain and Almax]Both Kolchak and Moran walk in silence, but their walking couldn't be more different. While Kolchak steps gracefully between the dry mounds, Moran frequently slips and stumbles as he hits deeper areas or slides off the edge of a bit of dry land. [/ic]

There have been problems with the lizards in the past though." He hold out an arm and points to a circle or scar tissue on it. "I've fought them myself in the past. Big one took a chunk out of me. I'm here for the money. And the fight."
At this Moran speaks up. "Lots of people started to go missing a few weeks ago. It's always the poorer people, so the cloaks never really care about it. My sister was taken too, a few days ago. I need to get her back." He stops talking, choked up for a moment, then seems to think of something and continues. [ic=@Kevkas and Ankh]After a while, Kaebo seems to give up on starting up a conversation and starts whistling quietly to himself. He continues for a short while, then you notice that Jorik has started to whistle a harmony to it. Neither acknowledges each others whistling directly, but they obviously are both very familiar with it.[/ic]
[ic=@Dain and Almax]All of a sudden, Kolchak stops in his tracks and holds up a hand. "Quiet, i heard something. Up ahead there," he says and points to a collection of large bushes a short ways ahead of you and to the left.
@Dain: you as well hear something and is sounds as if there is a group of people talking in some language you can't make out up ahead.
@Almax: You hear nothing, but through the bushes he points to you can make out a small group of roughly man-sized creatures. They look to be crouched down behind the bushes and every now and then you'll notice one of them move a bit, but for the most part they are staying still. [/ic]

[ic=@Dain and Almax]Kolchak seems annoyed by this suggestion. "The lizards are powerful but slow. If we can catch them off guard we gain a great advantage. If we approach them as you say, then we put ourselves on even footing. Only it won't be, since this is their home and they know it well."
Moran timidly raises his hand and says, "umm, I'm not saying I'm in favour of one choice of the other, but can we even talk to them? How do we know any of them will speak common?" [/ic]

[ic=Almax] Almax scoffs, You think acting now will give us any kind of advantage. If we approach they will either get scared and run for help or attack. This is their land, they know it better than you. Besides who said the ones watching from the bush were the only ones around. Almax watches the bush for a moment before adding. We have no advantage here. They can see us as well as we can see them. They will react. If you want you can send someone back to signal the other groups just in case. [/ic]

[ic=@Dain and Almax]Kolchak says, "Very well. go speak with them if you wish. I will be here ready for when they turn on you. They are scarecely more than beasts." [/ic]
[ic=@Ankh and Kevkas]From off ahead of you and further into the trees, you suddenly hear a great peircing cry ring out. Looking in that direction you see a few large bats flying above you through gaps in the trees. They then break out above the tree tops and speed away over the woods. There is no way the sound could have come form creatures so small - is there?
Kaebo drops into a crouch and begins to scan all around the woods nearby.
Jorik pulls off his cloak and tosses it at Ankh with a quick "here, hold this." No sooner has he tossed it than his body begins to change. Within the span of seconds, in his place hovers a small hawk that takes off towards the capony to look for the source of the sound.[/ic]

[ic=@Almax and Dain]You notice the figures behind the bushes spin to look at you in surprise - they appear to have not seen you earlier. Then a head pops up above the bush.
It's DuKaine. "Damnit, orc! This was supposed to be our section. You're too far north." He steps out from the undergrowth, with his group following. "We just found some, but you lot will bring them down on us making so much noise." He turns to the man in leathers behind him. "Cedrin, keep putting those snares together. We'll transport them with us."
The man he adressed returns to the bushes muttering about "They are far more than just snares. No appreciation..." [/ic]
[ic=@Kevkas and Ankh]With Jorik still off in the treetops, Kaebo continues to scan the woods. "Do either of you see anything? I'm not seeing an..."
He is cut off by a massive roar and a huge gust of wind causes the trees to part ver breifly. Through the gap you can see a massive dragon covered inebony scales lift off from a clearing some ways ahead and to the south. It swoops low and begin to fly back and forth above the trees rabidly - apparently trying to catch something much more nimble than it. What the quarry might be though, there is no sign.[/ic]

Kolchack cuts in. "I do not wish to fight with him, but if he is needed to find the lizardsm, then i will go with him."[/ic]
[ic=@Ankh and Kevkas]The small hawk-Jorik swoops back into the clearing and return to his form before he even hits the ground. "I don't believe the dragon saw me. I see where it came from though. There a clearing with a mound of rocks not far ahead. We would have walked straight into it. The bats it was chasing, though. They were strange. They seem trained in evasive maneuvers and they have small straps hooked onto their bodies. If i had to take a guess, I'd have to say they were hunting animals."
Kaebo speaks up. "But why would a massive dragon chase bats? and why are they out in the day?"[/ic]

[ic Kevkas] I say we wait to take the treasure. If we take it now, the dragon may come back and find it missing, then probably start looking for some magical auras on his items. If we wait, we could split the rewards with the rest of the groups, now this would still be a substantial amount for all of us, not to mention the reward we get for bringing the lord back." [/ic]

[ooc]So, seeing as how Gwaihir seems to have dissapeared, and i want to move this on, until i hear from his, i'm gonna npc/sideline his guy. Anyways. Onwards.[/ooc]
[ic=@Almax (and Dain?)]As your group creeps through the undergrowth, you make good time and everyone manages to remain fairly quiet. Soon you reach a large fallen tree and DuKaine pulls up behind it and begins to gesture over the top of it. "They're just on the other side," he whispers, and glancing quickly over the log you can see he tells the truth. In a small clearing on the other side is a small collection of huts and you can see a both male and female lizards standing around of going about chores while some small ones run back and forth in small groups. There are a few armed sentries standing around the collection of buildings, but for the most part they are engaged in conversation with other nearby lizards.
Beside you, you seen DuKaine draw out a curved sword and a vicious barbed pick, and gestures and whispers for everyone else to ready themselves.
Kolchak draws mo weapons, and whispers to Almax, "If you wish to try and speak with them, i suggest you do it now. He does not seem eager to wait. Neither am I."[/ic]
[ic=@Ankh and Kevkas]"I do not wish to split the take any more than I have to," says Jorik, "but maybe you are right. We'll continue to look for the lizards, but i wish to at least take a look at the dragon's clearing first. To fix it in my memory. Deal?"
Kaebo speaks up. "I don't know if thats such a good idea Jorik. Maybe we should just leave it for now."
Either way, the two of them, begin moving again - roughly towards where the dragon came from, but enought to the right that they can avoid the clearing if need be.

[ic=Almax] Almax turns to Dukaine and whispers, Put that away. I will go out there alone. If communications break down then you can do it your way, but if you attack un provoked I will cut you down myself. Almax takes his dagger from his belt and slides it into his boot covering the handle with the cuff of his pants.

Almax makes his way 100 ft off from the group before making his way toward the lizard encampment. As he walks toward the camp he walks so that he is seen, wands away from weapons, and calls out to the lizardfolk when he gets close enough for one to hear him. Hello, you don't happen to speak common do you? Or do you speak a dwarven? Or perhaps you speak Orcish? Or do you speak Elven? [/ic]

[ic=@Almax]As your leave the cover of the bushes, at first the lizards don't notice you, but after a short moment one of the sentries see you and calls out to the others. They leap up and begin to approach you, but cautiously - spears lowered in your direction. A few other nearby run off to other parts of the village or grab weapons to join the sentries. They are chattering to each other and calling out at you in some unknown language that seems to consist mostly of clicks and hisses. They are approaching no closer than about 20 or 30 feet, but their aggressive stances seem to be warning you to stay back.
[/ic]
[ic=@Ankh and Kevkas]You trek though the marsh for a short while until, off to the left through the trees, you see a clearing with a large mound making an island in the middle of what looks like a semi-deep pond. Coming from near the center of the village, you see two lizards approaching - a tall one, whose black scales contras with the green of those around him, and a stooped one, with a long cloak made of differently coloured feathers. The walk slowly, but purposefully and soon reach the edge of the circle where room is made for them.

[ic=Almax]I was passing through a nearby village. People there have disappeared. Many there blame your people. They say that the lizardfolk are taking them and they want vegence. I have come to prevent bloodshed on both sides. There are others around, watching me. A few wanted to attack first thinking the your people are not much more than animals, the others with them will follow the orders of the few. I just want to talk, and hope to resolve this peacefully. The ones watching, though hesitant, have agree to try things my way. [/ic]

[ic=@Almax]The cloaked one translates your words and the lizards all begin to spread out and look around as the black scaled one bellows something out.
"There are others? Where are they? Make them come out," says the shaman. He then listen to the chief and translates. "We have not taken your people. Why would we do that? There is not even any meat on you."

[ic=@Almax]The shaman and cheif consult briefly, then the shaman say, "Mighty Quessorixatl syas for you to to out, and not be hurtsed. We do not look for fighting."[/ic]
[ooc]He seems to be telling the truth. Spelling errors for dialog of people unfamiliar with languages are usually intentional.[/ooc]
[ic=@Almax]At his words, you companions come out of the bushes and most sheathe their weapons, but not all. A few - DuKaine, Moran and the Dwarf from the other group still have their weapons.
"Say your piece, lizard," spits DuKaine, "but we ain't putting our steel up unless you lot do. Or your sticks at least. You don't look to even have any good steel at all."[/ic]
[ic=@Ankh and Kevkas]You reach the bushes and see into the clearing. A massive mound of large rocks covered in earth and moss rises out of a wide pond that seems to vary greatly in depth. There is no sign of any oppening in the mound from where  you hide though.
Of more interest, though, are the crowds of small bipedal reptillian beings at the far end of the mound - kobolds. From what you can make out there are a number of them - about a half dozen - and possibly more behind the mound. Most see to be watching the marsh and the sky nervously, while the rest seem intent on the mound itself.

[ic=@Ankh and Kevkas]The Kobolds continue at their work and a fter a short time you see a group of them emerge from behind the mound carrying some large round object. It's larger than their torsos and there's four of them carrying it. The object is a mottled gray in colour - it looks almost like an egg, but it's far off an is dificult to see cleary due to the kobolds standing in the way. As the bearers move off into the woods, the rest of the group begin to leave as well.
One of the lookouts happens to glance in your direction and notices Ankh's metal shoulder sticking out from the bushes. He spins around and gives a cry of alarm to the others. The carries pick up pace hurrying off into the trees, while many of the rest turn to face the bushes you are hiding in.[/ic]

So, i know that we've had a few false starts due to me dropping off the face of the earth a few times, but my life has more or less settled finnaly and i plan to start the game back up. i will be reading over the post to remind myself of where we are and dig out my notes on it.

so, if i could get a headcount from you guys and everyone who is still interested to post a quick something, that would be awesome.

it's actually gonna happen this time.

I suppose I'm here, but hopefully this isn't another false start. I have to go back through and see what my character was..

So, we're moving along gradually. I've somewhat reminded myself of where we are, but unfortunately lost my word doc with my notes at some point in the interim and am having trouble locating the hand-written stuff. If i can't find it soon i'll just try to work it out again.
this is still happening, though.

also, anyone seen Gwaihir around? if not (or if he is here too, maybe), if anyone wants to join we could use another person.

(I know I'm not playing in this group, but on the unintentional comedy scale, this gets a good rating.  And like all good comedy, it's because I know this feeling...)

Okay, guys, i kno it's been a bit since my last update here, but i didn't want to restart until i had worked stuff out and decided how to do this. After some pondering, i have come to the decision that pbp on the forums just plain doesn't work. it is just far too eratic to work with a system made for quick back to back decisions, rolls and results. This is dissapointing to me, cause i don't have a d&d group here at home since i left university and i had also had big hopes and palns for this campaign. but plain and simple i just don't think it will work in this format.

On the other hand, purely roleplaying games seem to actually work better on the forums. I am not ready yet, and may not be for a bit, but once i have worked on my setting a bit more, i may want to continue this game as a just roleplaying game with no rolls, stats and crunch. It'd just be me having some guidelines on power and abbilities, and then you would just state your actions and even your results (although this second bit would only be for less critical foes and challenges. BBEG's i would have to give the story results for). I'll let you know if and or when i'd strt this, but for now i am just ending then pbp game for good (more or less) and going to just work on the fluff of my setting for a bit.

sorry y'all :sosad:
