I wonder if perhaps the definition of 'article' supplied in the announcement about the Post is too limiting. Do we really want 'articles' to be defined only as 'crunch' bits divorced from the context of a single setting, the way it seems to be now? Wouldn't it also be a good thing to have essays on design principles, that kind of thing?
For instance, wouldn't it be great to have someone who is particularly good at physical geography write an 'article' on how to design the physical contours of your world? I know I've got several good essays in me about designing 'realistic' religions, histories, etc.
If consensus goes against me on this one, so be it, but I think that The Post would be a great place to condense the collective wisdom of our Boards into accessible pieces for newcomers to consider without having to wade through all the discussion (with its frequent digressions).
Errr... I'm not sure why you thought it was only for crunch... the very first sentence I wrote on Articles was:
Articles will be defined as "Developed opinions and new structures and mechanics for playing D&D, d20, and RPGs."
Basically, it's any original subject, not found in a d20 book (or at least, greatly expanded from a d20 book), that could help other people with their campaigns.
When I said this:
Articles" is basically where you would put up your new, original magic system, or race.
I was really just showing an example of what would be considered suitable Article subject, but not the end-all-be-all of the category..l
Cheers!
Alright, I guess the one-sided (IE, crunch-centric) examples just bamboozled me and made me forget "developed opinions".
Cool, I'll get writing. ;)
if you think we could be more clear w/ any of the descriptions, please let us know.
.. i would rather clearify things then have people not post.
Well, I dunno, it sounds like the confusion was simply on my own part. (And it was of course fed by the fact that the articles section was empty, a condition I shall strive immediately to fix.)
There's an article in there, one on ToM.
Actually, now that I look at it again, maybe it would be slightly more clarifying to highlight specifically world creation in the Articles description. IE, change "Post your new ideas or theories concerning DnD game-play or rules" into "Post your new ideas or theories concerning world design, DnD game-play or rules."
Not only does it help clarify things for confused people like me ( ;) ) but it also makes it explicitly clear that worlds designed for a different game are also ok (which I think we specified at some point back in the old days.)
Right, but that's in the "Reviews" section, which is a whole different, pretty self-evident, monster.
Though again I wonder if the d20 limitation is a necessary one. I can see more of a case for it in reviews than in articles on design...
Kalos, I've edited it in the way you recommended; you're right, it does make it clearer.
I've changed The Post to use the old smiley hating wysiwyg editor. It's got no working emoticons, no blockquote tag, but it will allow tables and lists. and flash uploads, if you've got a nice flash file to show, just sitting around and all. I think it's needed here so someone can easily post classes, bullet points, etc. but ya'll might disagree.
This was a hack, so post any wonky behavior. if you want the old editor back, and think tables are for sissies, post that too.
I think tables are for sissies. And sleep is for sissies too!
QuoteAnd sleep is for sissies too!
Yep I'll stick to the strippers and whiskey over sleep any day. :drinkin:

I myself favor a good bottle of Perrier and the company of a fellow elitist who keeps her clothes on over sleep.
