I'm new to PbP, but I'll give it a shot.
First, I'm going to follow Rael's lead on a lot of things when it comes to setup. 32-point buy, et al.
Here's a link that might be helpful: http://invisiblecastle.com/help.py?p=buy (//hyperlinkurl)
I appreciate as much core material as possible, but I am willing to work with players to accomodate them Check out my gaming philosophy over at http://www.freewebs.com/red_valor/introduction.htm (//hyperlinkurl).
The setting is the world of Red Valor, and I'll likely be using a published adventure or two. I don't know if this will be an extended campaign or not, and it really depends on how much I enjoy PbP.
I would appreciate all characters to be submitted in the sheet format found at the top of this forum. Also, please contact me with any questions about material you wish to use or about any other aspect of character creation.
I will also provide accepted characters with additional regional languages. Characters should be 1st level.
The starting campaign date will be the 45th day of Bremvian(spring) of the year 1254. I typically require backstories for characters, and I'm very willing to help with one. I'm the living encyclopedia of the RV world, so take advantage of my knowledge!
EDIT: As a note, I'm thinking the first actual game date, depending on the number of submissions, will be the 11th. The time will depend on player availability.
/me does the happy dance!
Thank you ElDo! I'll get out my books right away. Do you have aim so I can iron out a character/backstory with you?
Yes I do, and my sn is in my profile. I don't know how much I'll be on today, but I'll do my best.
I'm thinking about playing, but one question is: How often are we expected to post to play? Once a day? one session a week?
Finished the sheet, here's a link (http://www.thecbg.org/stuff/3eprofiler/view.php?id=2)
Excellent! Count me in!
*pulls up created character archives*
Interesting. I have a little reading to do before I start on a background.
Quote from: Xathan, Last Of The FallenI'm thinking about playing, but one question is: How often are we expected to post to play? Once a day? one session a week?
Sorry I missed the question earlier. We're probably looking at once a week, mostly on Tuesdays. Occasional bonus sessions may be called, and cancellations would happen only in extreme cases.
Respectfully withdrawn and thinking of another character: I want to start fresh. :)
Is the campaign starting before or after Bremvian Festival?
Wicked!
I'd totally play in this if it's cool with you.
Will start to work out a character and then post when i got something.
On a problematic note, the link to you site says "freewebs page not found". Nevermind, it's working now.
huzzah! :hooray:
On second look, i see someone has already taken my first plan (what are the odds on 2 halfling druids?), but i'll think of a new one soon enough.
Just wondering what you guys plan to use so any gaps can be filled (like do we have a cleric?)
Also what non-core stuff is allowed? Psionics? Savage Species monster progressions? (i hope so)
cheers y'all :buds:
I was going to post a druid but Senke beat me to it. :fencing:
I'm going to go with a Fighter or Paladin from the Vestin rebelion. This is why I wanted to know whether we are starting before or after the Second Clockwork attack
Hmm...since my character got the thumbs up from ElDo I'll assume we are doing a 600 gp buy...? If not, please let me know so I can change this number around :)
EDIT: I don't know why, but I forgot to give my druid leather armor...
I've taken the scout role, just so everyone knows... I'll get stats up as soon as possible, but I'm busy tonight.

Non-core stuff is fine for the most part, I'd just ask that you check it with me personally, either through AIM, Yahoo Instant Messenger, e-mail, or a PM. I'm very well-networked. ;)

I'm impressed with the attention to detail. The Bremvian Festival is sort of a New Year's-type thing, and took place 44 days prior to the game start date. Azrael's Pass is currently under reconstruction, and the temporary headquarters of the Vestin Federal Government is in Greenvale, a northern metropolis.

Aaaaaand I've decided to allow 600 gp buy.
Well, after some quick consideration I've decided to start fresh. The Druid slot's open if anyone wants it, I'm going to dig into my books and find something really fun + unique that I normally can't use on WOTC.

Character Background and Description
Description:
Raynor is a big man, usually standing a head above the crowd as well as being broad. He has many scars from his semi-rough childhood, and his apprenticeship. His hands bear the most scars. By the way he carries himself many can tell that he can hold his own in a battle. When not wearing armor, he wears a leather vest with various symbols, and brown leather pants with similar symbols.
Background:
Raynor was always the big guy in the group. He was strong and hardworking. He was able to procure an apprenticeship with a weapons smith. He learned much from his master, not only how to make and care for these weapons, but also to wield them. His master could never claim to be the best in town, but his products were of good quality. Raynor would practice with the blades to make sure they were well balanced and worthy of the customers. With each weapon that was made, he became closer to the metal and learned to use each weapon well.
Because he was so big and so strong, Raynor was the proving ground for those who thought they were tough. Most of the time he was able to shrug them off and walk away, but not always. While his master was away on business a group of drunken boys came to the shop. He had been able to walk away from them before, but not this time. The alcohol had given them the courage to push father than the previous time. They started to wreck the workshop, smashing all sorts of weapons. Raynor can usually keep his cool, but not this night. He exploded into a fit of rage that would have made a barbarian flinch. Two of the boys ran when they saw Raynor lose control, the other two had gotten what they had wished for. He nearly beat those two to death, by the time the town guard had come with the two boys that had run. Their story landed Raynor in jail for a year. He felt he deserved it when he came back to his senses.
During the year, his master had found a new apprentice and had no more room for Raynor. Raynor took this as a sign. He decided that when he got out he would make the best of his freedom. His day of freedom came sooner that he had expected. King Tristan III ordered an attack on his village. Almost everyone was slaughtered, but some had escaped into the nearby woods. Raynorâ,¬,,¢s family was among those slaughtered, his mother, father and little sister. Raynor had survived only because the cell he was in collapsed, knocking him unconscious. The rubble had made a pocket around him, and he was able to find an opening to escape. He emerged from the rubble to find that his village had been decimated.
Raynor learned of the rebellion and was quick to join. He helped where he could. Most of the time he spent fixing weapons for the more active members. He did join his fellow rebels on a few raids, but he did not see much combat.
When the King Tristanâ,¬,,¢s government finally toppled, finally felt some relief. He thought of his family and friends the whole time. Now he was lost. He had nothing to fight for and nowhere to go, so Raynor traveled to different towns looking for what work he could find.
He had been traveling when he heard rumors of the Clockwork Army attacks. At first he dismissed them as merely rumors, but he kept hearing the same story. What could they be up to? They have never attacked innocent people. The corrupt King had been removed, and the Council was filled with just people. Raynor doesn't know what to make of this new clockwork army. Have they been stopped? The more he thinks about it the more he is confused.
Ooh goody Neptune, now we have two war-veterans. Ona nother note, I'll try to finish my character when I can, it's just writng it up online is proving tedious. I'll see if I can get it done tomorrow.
So, i've gone through a whole pile of different character ideas (halfling druid, then ninja-type guy, then some monster class, then a dwarf, then...) and figured i should check if this one is cool with you since it's usually not a pc role.
I want to make a Clr/Wiz necromancer, and just figured i'd check this through first. He's not gonna be evil or anything (Probably LN in fact) and i've worked out a code of honour governing his use of raiding undead that will hopefully allow him to be at least tolerated by the party. (although if the enemy is undead, this gets even easier as he could be said to be an expert that was called in).
Gonna start working on his stats, as well as an alternated char if you think he won't mesh with the setting very well. Will hopefully have it at least partially done in a bit...
You might want to talk to Senke. I think he had something similar in the works.
Yea...I kinda have had a Dread Necromancer in the making all afternoon...that's why I withdrew my Druid submission
Dammit!
Why are we the same!!!!
first we both pick halfling druids, then we both pick necromancers.
Alright then, lessee...
back to the drawing board.
are monster calsses allowed?
would this class be allowed? http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=219521
are psionics allowed?
just trying to work out my options.
also, do we have a cleric (or other healer) yet?
[edit] also, senke. how are you building your necro? wiz? clr? multiclass?
Confirmed classes
Fighter
Scout
So far no cleric, druid or arcane spel caster yet
Here: I'll back down from the Dread Necro, okay?
(My half-orc Dread Necro isn't working. The phys. description works, but the stats are everything I DON'T want them to be.)
Since I can't really firmly decide on one thing at the moment, I think I'll go with my favorite Racial Progression in RotW and make a Centaur.
If you decided to back down cause you thought i was genuinely upset or annoyed, that's not it at all.
I was just joking around cause of the sheer absurdity of it all.
if you actually don't want to play it though, i would be happy to make mine.
I just want to make sure.
:itsok:
Oh, I wasn't backing down b/c of that, I simply can't get the ****ing thing to work! By all means, please play a Necromancer. I'll go ahead and do a Centaur, and after I'm done with the class progression I'll MC it into a Druid (or maybe a Ranger) :)

I'm only going to be on in the afternoon after this, so I won't see your response for a bit. But who are these "Silent Men"?
Sorry. I'm a bit confused.
EDIT: And as a note, I'll allow a lot of stuff (just PM me about it), but I prefer only published material that I own. So the WotC class is out, I'm afraid.

Hmm...I'm trying to think of what role a centaur could fill for the party...this is a toughie (though not as hard as earlier): scout's already been taken :)
I guess he'll fill the role of the party's marksman for the time being (18 Dex, soon to be 20). I'll most likely give him a reach weapon, but what kind has yet to be determined. (Greatspear?)
Since we have ourselves a cleric in the works, I'm going to go and blend my previous character concepts together and make this centaur an arcane spellcaster if it lives long enough to complete its level progression. I'll most likely make a Warlock, using a theme similiar to my previous idea (ElDo knows what I'm talking about :)): All that dexterity and natural armor makes for a pretty potent melee-capable spellcaster.
ElDo: Since my PC is going to start at Medium size acc. to the Centaur progression, how should I handle its height as it progresses from Medium to Large?
EDIT: After noticing that the Centaur has 6 Racial Levels, I'm not sure if using it is such a good idea...I'm running out of ideas, so I'm not quite sure what I'll do.
Apparently our Tech guys have put together character sheet hosting, and we might want to consider converting to that.
Cheers!
I'll link to that sheet when I'm finished, I find it to be incredibly useful. I am experiencing none of the problems I noticed with the other sheets.
As a note, guys, Common is considered primarily a trade tongue, and not a "mother tongue". Meaning you can convey fairly sophisticated ideas with it, but not nearly to the degree and level that a regional language conveys.
Humans get a free regional language based on their region of origin (duh). Racial languages for other races are the equivalent.
EDIT: You might want to get with me to talk about languages.
Quote from: Elven DoritosEDIT: You might want to get with me to talk about languages.
Well I was going to but someone logged off AIM before I could. :P
I already transfered Raynor (http://www.thecbg.org/stuff/3eprofiler/view.php?id=3) over to the 3Eprofiler sheet.
When you make a character don't forget to make it viewable by people other than yourself.
*yawn* well, after a good 6-hour nap I've firmly decided to make a Elf Warlock to fill the role of the group's offensive spellcaster / marksman :)
Sorry about all the confusion earlier: 4 hours of sleep in 2 days doesn't do nice things to my brain.
Tiny question which I can't figure out: Was the Clockwork Army the name of the group which instigated the first underground movement in Vestin? I can't find any information on this, and the only group you mention is the Second Clockwork Army...
http://www.freewebs.com/red_valor/therepublicofvestin.htm may be what you're looking for.

Home with a "sick stomach"
Great! Aromel (http://www.thecbg.org/stuff/3eprofiler/view.php?id=4) is all ready to go!
Here's my character http://thecbg.org/stuff/3eprofiler/view.php?id=5.
he's not quite done yet but he's almost there.
Also, ElDo, are you allowing stuff form Libris Mortis? (specifically True Necromancer PrC, deathboun/undeath domains, and some of the feats?)
As for the "Silent men" thing, my idea for that is it's a group that he says he's a part of (but probably doesn't exist), so that if i ever have to bring undead into a town or something, i can dress them in black cloaks and masks and use this as a disguise for them. also, this way, they don't have to speak (i'll say that all but one merber of each group of silent men, takes a vow of silence).
edit: where is the campaign going to take place primarily? (for background purposes)
I'll answer this! :) (I asked ElDo, and, like an altzheimer's patient, forgot in 5 minutes and asked again.)
We're starting in the Middlegrounds.

I've got my RL game group today, so don't expect answers until later tonight. As for the Silent Men, go ahead and e-mail me with the specifics, if any.
As for Libris Mortis, I'll allow the True Necro. Any other material that's non-core I also appreciate asking about, unless they are prereqs for the True Necro.
Hope that helps!

Sunetos (http://www.thecbg.org/stuff/3eprofiler/view.php?id=2) is done, use the hosted sheet.
Supa: your link doesn't work. Did you make your sheet public-accessable?
Okay. Sorry about the somewhat deadness of this thread. The plan is still to go ahead and do this thing on this coming Tuesday from 5:00 EST to 9:00 EST. This may or may not pan out, but I've got the best hopes.
Also, anyone with suggestions on how exactly we should run this would be appreciated. I'm not talking about DMing style (although knowing your gaming expectations might be a good thing, too), but about the actual mechanics of running a PbP game.
-Elven Doritos
Living la Vida Loca
EDIT: Not to sound like an ass, Supa, but I do sort of need a non-broken link to allow the character. Cheers!
A Sort of pseudo-initiaive order might work. That way when you ask the party as a whole a question, everyone responds in order and you can summarize. Sorta like the random encounters that have been run on here. I highly recommend running combats like the PbP RE's, as that system seems to work especially well. Anything else?
During moments of roleplay the convention is usually players post when they want to do or say something.
Combat is the tricky thing. I have seen it done two ways.
1). The players roll initiative, then post their actions in order of initiative. This way is a little slower but it is less confusing.
2). PLayers post one action each round, and when all players have posted the DM summarizes the round and the next round starts. THis way is a little faster, but also more confusing. Actions need to be changed if the become invalid, like a monster dieing before the characters initiative.
Perhaps we should use the CBG as a jumping point and use a different medium? Is there any particular programs or chat rooms that anyone cares for over another? I'm partial to Yahoo accounts, though dice can get tricky.
We can keep it in-house, too. I'm just trying to be open to all suggestions.
Just doing it here with an aim box open could be done, as long as everyone has an sn. Post actions and information on the forums, ask stupid questions like "Can my sword glow purple instead of yellow?" in the aim chat.
No, AIM is a bad idea. I've tried that before, it doesn't work at all because everything gets swept up in the IMs way too fast.
I prefer having Initiative be rolled first, then everyone posts their actions in the initiative order, and if more than 1 PC attacks the same character the DM intervenes and states how each attack plays out on that one target, to prevent overlapping damage. Then, at the end of the round everything is summarized by the DM.
Well Senk, you have the floor, as you appear to have the experience.
The beauty of play by post is the game is continuous. Players can post whenever they can. They don't have to meet on AIM or YAHOO. It becomes difficult to get times where every body is on and able to play for an extended period of time. With play by post some one can post in the morning, while someone else post in the afternoon. It is on their own schedule. The game never stops as long as players post to it.
And as long as the DM can manage it, which is, again, not something that I can do nearly-endlessly.
Right, but that's the other thing: because it remains in action 24/7, the DM only has to post around once or twice a day, unless there is heavy NPC interaction. It's actually very easy.
Sorry about my prolonged absense (there's been a lot of hectic family stuff going on).
character is done pretty much.
Jae'kal (http://localhost/~username/v3/view.php?id=5) (hopefully this link works.)
as for other libris mortis stuff, there were a few feats (specifically profane life-leech) and if i can i would like to use the "Undeath" and "Deathbound" domains. (if you need detailed info on how these work {i can't remember if you said you have the book or not}then let me know and i'll type them up)
as for how i think the game should work, i would be in favour of having it set up 24/7 and people post whenever they can (it might be problematic if we try to do a regular time since my work schedule changes all the time. also, i don't have and AIM sn.)
edit: aperently the link doesn't work. can someone tell me the correct way to do this?
You have to make the character sheet public. You can do this by logging into to 3e and going to "Modify Character Details." Then you select which character you want, and select "Make Public" (I can't remember the exact wording).
Supa: I don't know where your getting your URL from, but your character is located here http://www.thecbg.org/stuff/3eprofiler/view.php?id=5
localhost/~username/v3/view.php?id=5 doesn't work.
i did make it public and it was saying that it was located where i linked to (and the link worked then).
so anyways
Jae'kal (http://www.thecbg.org/stuff/3eprofiler/view.php?id=5)
here's the working link
Ah, supa... We sort of started without you earlier today.
I see where you got the link from now. The link displayed under the Public Character doesn't work unless you click it from that page. Next time just grab the URL from the address bar from the actually character sheet page (where you edit the sheet). I know it was public, that is why I was able to find it and provide the link.
seeing as how you guys are still in the tavern, it shouldn't be too hard for me to jump.
shold i post a brief entrance thing for my character (maybe late at night in game), or should i wait for the next story open time?
I would just assume wait for the next story open time... You might want to get in touch with me about how to incorporate your character.
EDIT: Actually, if you want to work in your character with another player, I'm cool with that, too.
I'm game for that, if you like. Both our characters use rather dark powers, so there would be little friction between the two and a higher likelyhood of them meeting up somewhere before the start of the campaign.
Yeah, that sounds possible Senk. Maybe we met briefly trying to find information at a library or a sage or something.
You have any ideas?
My character has more or less been diving into archives and libraries frequently during his travels in search of family trees and further information on Warlock inheritage, so that could work.
