I like this!

I'm having visions of sullen wizards at the top of half-sunken towers, consorting with the various elemental factions who are still waging their proxy war.

So there are ships that sail on conventional oceans as well as airships that sail the skies? Do your adventure ideas mostly involve sailing between islands in some type of ship or another?

Thanks Luminous.

It's funny, when I started working on the adventure for this campaign I had the party meet a young woman in disguise that was the heir to the throne (hmmmm, where have I seen that before). They help her and are given an air ship - a crappy ship that has a rough crew and will require a lot of time and money to turn into a good ship. It was later that I realised that I had already written the Mages and the leaders of the land. Oh well, just a little rewritting and there's no problem.

I mostly see the players moving around in air ships, but there would be some ocean voyages too - there's just too much ocean to ignore. Also, I was thinking that quite a bit of lost treasure (read - magic) would still be hidden away in a watery grave somewhere. I always wanted to run some underwater adventures and this will give me that chance in spades.  :D

I love that pic.  Gets me thinking of a couple of d20 books that I have.  The one I like the most is called "the Deep" which is all about underwater adventures, and there is another good one called "Into the Blue".  OH!  There's a really good d20 book from Goodman Games called "Aerial Adventure Guide" which has stats and game mechanics for airships.

I'd highly recommend these books so you don't have to reinvent the wheel mechanics wise and you can simply focus on building the world and writing adventures.

I know that I have the "Aerial Adventure Guide" and I have one of the underwater ones. I even have one by Bastion Press also dealing with Skyships. Thanks for the name of the other underwater one though, I'll have to pick that one up. Yeah, that pic really speaks to me about what this setting is all about.

The Deep is a HUGE book, close to 500-pages... it has an intro adventure in the back and also just generally gave me a lot of ideas.

I really like the idea of sky and sea and little traditional land for a whole world.  Seems a little off-putting when you think about it based on OUR human perspective, and I think it adds an "edge" to the world.

I really like this idea it is almost like a setting I was going to make once. I love the airship idea.

Got any room for players in your game? *drool* *pout*

Nice tasty beginning to whet our appetites, and good use of illustrations. I'd be interested to hear what magics or technologies exist to go along with this setting and how the people live.

Well that's about the best compliment anyone could get on a setting idea. I am playing with the idea of running a PbP game here on the CBG. I'll get a little more work done on the setting first though.

I'm working on a class to combine the roles of wizard and cleric (I don't know about your campaign but in ours no one wants to be the cleric). The rest is coming, I promise.

Wow, you kidding? Clerics are to be sure the best class overall for an all-rounder, with casters being completely uber in various other areas. To combine both, you'd need to look seriously at the balance perspective.

I'm interested in seeing more on the flavour, too. :)

I'm really liking this so far. Especially the details on the floating caverns. But i'd like to hear more about the 'former glory' the dragons once held here. Did they manipulate and control the human population, or play a part in the war? Or were they always as predatory and uncivilized as they seem to be now?

Very interesting ideas. I see lots of opportunities for exploring beyond the same old boring dungeon crawl. Just imagine what secrets could be hidden in all those underwater places.

I just had a thought of what it would be like if two of the flying islands went to war. Fleets of airships bombarding the enemy island, soldiers parachuting down to invade the enemy land, fights onboard the airships themselves as enemies try to board.

I've been thinking about boarding actions and how dangerous they would be at 1,000 feet over the ocean, or even a hundred feet over land. I was thinking of this - a magic ring that all crew memebers would wear, a "life" ring if you will (yeah, it's a bad joke). When someone wearing the ring moves farther than 10' from the ship the ring activates. The person is put into a floating stasis field - they don't fall, but they can't move, cast spells, talk, etc. They bob along until the ship they fell from comes back and picks them up. The person in the stasis feild does not age, or need to eat or drink, and cannot be affected by spells. This effect lasts until she returns to the ship from which she fell. Only a ritual taking an hour to preform can remove the stasis from a person - so if you find someone floating around you'd have to take them somewhere to have the ritual preformed to revive them.

Now this is going to continue to make boarding actions dangerous as the rings would have to be taken off before you left your own ship. A fall while boarding is certain death. You'd really have to want something off of the ship being boarded to take that kind of risk. Or, you might have wings and not worry about it too much.

Well...those who are 'skyborn' might have an extra stat for balance maybe? They say that some Amerindian people have a lack of fear of heights and that makes them very competent when say doing high up building construction, it might be a similar benefit.

I'd recommend picking up the Explorer's Handbook from Eberron. It has stuff for airships and such, and even a sort of "life rings" to prevent crewmen from falling to their deaths. I think it has a feather fall effect or something, though.

Okay, I'll check that book out - I don't have too much of the Eberron stuff, I'm more of a Greyhawk guy. Thanks for the tip.

That's a good idea Tybalt. Skyborn could be one of those feats that give a bonus to Balance and Climb checks, although I'm sure they must already have one but it's not coming to mind at the moment.
