Title: The Strange Sky
Post by: beejazz on April 27, 2007, 02:38:25 PM
This is more or less reserved for the concepts of day-to day aeronautical/astronautical travel, and related subjects. Post comments here: http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?27243.last
As you might have guessed, the gas giant the lunar system orbits is huge, and subject to crushing gravity. Its surface is often visible at the irregular sunrises and sunsets. Oddly, there are many people who are unnerved by the sight of the planet's surface. Others can be described as downright phobic. The phenomenon is so far unexplained.

The first moon is the landing site of several of the fragments of Embla. It is a dry planet, but not without its underground water. However, its lack of oceans etc insures that the days are brutally hot and the nights equally frigid. Native bats eke out a modest existence in settlements carved into the faces of the strange rock formations that dot the landscape. Otherwise, this moon is inhabited by miners, traders, criminals, and exiles.

The second moon (also home to fragments of Embla) is far more wet than the first, but has its own problems. While this world is covered by luscious wetlands, the surface was rendered uninnhabitable by biochemical warfare. The world is now little more than a way-point between the other two, though shiploads of native hobgoblins hang around and prey on passing merchants. Also, the AE (ambient energy) currents are strongest in this world's orbit. Ships can stay aloft almost indefinitely, but the weather can quickly take a turn for the worse.

The Third moon is perhaps closest to our own, and is the landing site of the intact Ask. Pollution and sprawl have become problematic, but the residents are comfortable. They are "bound in golden chains" as it were to the corrupt and commecialistic society in which they live. The society is not without its darker sides. There is a deeply entrenched criminal underworld, corporate and political corruption, and discrimiation against hobgoblin refugees and native frogs.

The fourth moon is entirely uninhabitable. Its atmosphere is caustic, and its gravity is strangely erratic (a phenomenon not yet explained).

The cold moon lies outside the ambient energy field, so those wishing to visit had better pack powerful rockets and plentiful fuel, as the ubiquitous AE sails won't work here.

Sailing is the practice of utilizing AE (ambient energy) sails for propulsion of ships and the like. AE is a phenomenon apparently limited to the orbits of the first four moons.
AE is actually the after-effects of the Titans' infinite energy experiments. Their infinite energy supplies fields and currents that can be used like lights sails or a maglev... although the energy isn't light nor electromagnetic.

AE can lead to terrible storms with rather adverse effects on the surrounding reality. Imagine a freak electrical storm, aurora borealis, and chernobyl rolled up into one and your close to getting the picture. There are rumors that a ship entering and surviving one storm may exit another somewhere else, but these rumors are unconfirmed.
I'll fill these in later.
