Post by: Epic Meepo on May 04, 2007, 08:31:59 PM
Okay, so this is just a link back to Xeviat's "Don't Watch Spiderman 3" thread.

URL (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?29625.0)

In the interest of equal time for opposiing viewpoints, I just wanted a title to appear on the Recent Posts list that offered an alternative to the whole not watching Spiderman 3 suggestion.

Hey... Topher Grace was an awesome choice. He looks close enough to McGuire to mess up your thought pattern. "Wait. Why does Toby have yellow hair now?"

Actually, I can agree with this reasoning, although I still say he was a poor choice. When I first saw the clip of the church scene, I thought that was peter that was praying. Needless to say, the end of the prayer really threw me off...

I think that was supposed to get a laugh out of the audience. I could here snickers coming out of the front row. Of my teeth!

Once I realized which character was saying it, it was kinda funny. Although, for some odd reason, I think it was supposed to be serious....

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, I'm torn on whether I liked it or Spiderman 2 better.
Of course, if you haven't seen the movie yet, why are you reading this thread?

Anyway, I had a number of problems with the movie, and I'll list them out here.

1. Venom's Voice:  I didn't have that much of a problem with his looks, I know he's not the 7-foot 300 pound powerhouse he is in the cartoons (and presumably the comics) but I think they did a good job of making him realistically muscular.  And I didn't have any problem with Eddy Brock's character or the casting of Topher Grace.  My only problem with Venom was that they didn't make his voice even a little intimidating.  Sure, when he peels back the symbiote to talk, then he can have his little squeaky-ish voice, but when he's Venom, he needs to sound like Venom.  The 90s cartoon did a fantastic job with both Venom's and Carnage's voices, they ran the actor's voice through a modulator and then ran that alongside the actor's normal voice, albiet a little louder and slightly offset.  It was extremely well-done, and I was disappointed when Venom just sounded like Eddy Brock.

2. Sandman Gets Away?: Wait, what?  After all this crap the guy gets away?  And without any "I won't use my powers" or "I'll find a better way to save her" stuff?  Seriously?  What makes Spidey think he's gonna turn his life around?  Sure, he's probably not going to kill people, but I don't think he really learned a lesson about stealing...

3. Black Suit Spiderman: I agree that Black Suit Spidey didn't get enough play time.  Sure, we get plenty of Emo Peter, but Black Suit Spiderman beating the crap out of a couple of small-time thugs would've shown the aggression at least as well, if not better.

I really didn't have any other big problems.  Yeah, a couple plot points seem a litte, forced, but it went well overall.  In fact, I have a couple if things I'd like to point out that I loved about the movie.

1. Venom: I didn't like his voice, but other than that he was fantastic!  They did a great job with his giant teeth and creepy eyes, and when the symbiote broke away from Eddy, that was sweet.  I thought they did a great job showing that Venom was much stronger than Spiderman, plenty of beating and toying with him to show that Venom was in charge, and still short enough to keep the movie from running to a full 3 hours.

2. Harry: Yes, I liked how Harry was done in this movie.  The coma was a little, 'convenient', but it's a movie about a guy getting bitten by a radioactive spider and gaining superpowers, give 'em a break.  I liked that he was really evil once he got down to it, screwing with MJ and Peter hardcore before Black Suit Peter kicked his butt.  And I thought his heroic return in the end fit with his overall character.  Yes, he was ticked off at Spiderman and Peter in the beginning of the movie, but they a couple  years (at least) as best friends.  Including Peter helping Harry get adjusted to public school and carrying him through a couple of classes.  I didn't think it was at all unbelieveable that Harry would remember his friendship (with a little coaxing) and come back to save Peter and Mary Jane.

3. Final Fight Scene: Fantastic.  Harry and Peter got a few little jokes in and managed to do some 'best friends' teamwork moves.  Then Harry beats the crap out of Sandman while Spiderman gets the crap beaten out of him by Venom.  I thought that Harry's sacrifice made a good point in the movie, even if you could see it coming a mile away.  But my favorite part of the whole thing was when Spiderman swung in, right in front of a huge American flag.  I laughed out loud at that, they couldn't have been much more obvious without stopping the frame and having Stan Lee walk out and say, "Spiderman is a good guy again."

4. Peter as a Villain: Peter Parker made a pretty good villain himself, almost as good as Harry.  Yeah, the whole street scene with him dancing and shooting little guns at girls was a little dorky, but Peter Parker was a huge nerd his entire life, he doesn't know how to really be cool except as Spiderman, and Spidey could've gotten away with the little guns thing.  He was very good in the Jazz Club as a huge :censored: and smacking MJ was a good turning point for him.

Anyway, I really liked this movie and I hope they manage to do at least one more with Toby and Kirsten.  Maybe bring in the Lizard and Black Cat?  With Venom making his dramatic return?
