Title: Random Encounter: The Black Dragon of Swantville
Post by: daggerhart on April 04, 2006, 02:06:58 PM
# of Players: 4
Level of Players: 3

Quote from: The Scene:Swantville is a small farming town slightly off the path near the southern swamp-lands.

While passing through, you've all individually noticed a reward offered for a dragon that has been terrorizing the herdsman near the swamp.    The rewards seemed particularly worthwhile for you, and you respond to the article.

Its turns out that 4 of you have responded to the reward, and the sherrif has sent you all out together to better your chances against the beast.

After a few very-slow days of searching around the swamp, you've finally stumbled upon a giant opening beneath a fallen tree, which must be the dragons lair.
The open is covered in muck and moss, but you can tell that after only a few feet, it becomes an actual cave
There is no light beyond the first few feet.
The cavern obviously slopes down, and the floor is slick with black swamp muck and moss.
The entire opening is 12 feet across and 7 feet high.

just  list your memorized, or known spells, depending upon class. (update)

Quote from: for BartYour eyes have focused in on the pool in the back of the cavern.
Since you don't see any other movement in the room, you've assumed that the dragon must either be gone, or in that pool of sludge.
You can still see Flint waiting in the skylight form the tunnel opening.
You have initiative.[/quote]Your hear them walking deep into the opening, and eventually they stop.
You've heard no other sounds, and all seems clear outside.[/quote]i pull out my rope[/i]' or whatever you need that may be 'standard' equipment.

If a character talks to a character, then I'll let the other player respond IC.

Normally when not in combat, I will wait on a few people to post actions, then play it out.

Quote from: for GilbertYou pull your rope from your bag and attach its hook to a solid rock jutting from the wall around you.
You hear a rather loud 'splat'!  and you look down to see that Bart has fallen down from the ledge.
You quickly grab your rope tight, and start scrambling down to the cave floor.
When you're feet hit the ground, you immediately turn to help Bart up from the sludge.
You hear a 'splat' come from the opening.
Still nothing wrong outside the cave.
It sounds as if the assault has begun.[/quote]It's a bull, just as you feared.
Not only that, it's older and bigger than you anticipated.
You can feel the fear trying to sneak into your bones as you stare into it's deep, empty eyes.

You shake off the stupor immediately, and quickly pull your way to your feet using Gilbert for counter-weight.[/quote]
You see it all.
The dragon pushing its' head above the surface, your companions hurriedly readying themselves.

You've been ready the whole time.[/quote] Initiative!

Flint & Saelin are already prepared to act, and can act first.
Gilbert & Bart need to re-roll.

Saelin shouts, loud enough for Flint to hear, to ensure he can come to our aid. I throw a shortspear at it, and then jump down to the ground with the others.[/ic]

Standard Action: Throwing Spear
If this is a surprise round, ignore the jumping down, that will be my move action next round. If it is part of a regular round, that's my move action. I'm on the edge of the ledge, so it might be considered a free action to just hop down: if daggerhart agrees, treat it that way.

Quote from: for FlintYou hear  "Prepare to die! beast!" in a thick elven accent, echoing through the opening.
(don't forget that the ground is slick before charging in ;))
init(27) Saelin crys out and leaps from the ledge as hurls a shortspear at the dragon's protruding head.
The spear flies through the air and sinks deep into the beast's lower neck with a thud.

The dragon shreeches in pain, and sinks back underneath the muck surface.

init(26) Gilbert sidels towards the western wall of the cavern, removing himself from the line of fire.
- just as Saelin lands perfectly beside him.

init(20) Dragon leaps from the pool and lands just on the cavern floor (about 40 feet away from you all), it's wings slinging sludge all over the dark cavern.
It roars again, as it begins a dead charge towards Saelin...
[/quote] I stopped here because Gilbert still has an action to make (you've only moved).

Once he makes his move, I'll continue the round with the dragon's charge.[/ooc]

you cant edit a post and add a dieroll if there are die rolls already after it, or it will re-roll everything after the one you just added.
thats what brainface is working on.

init(26) - Gilbert climbs the rest of way up, onto the ledge, and moves into position (5ft), now faced with the dragon's tail whipping back and forth.
He stabs, but the dragon's hide continues to reflect his blows.

Saelin, finishes climbing the rope, onto the ledge.
init(20) - Dragon takes a sharp intake fo breath, and shoots stream of hissing green liquid at Flint.

[ooc]I think it's my post. Either way: is their a way I could hit the dragon at an angle that wouldn't have Gilbert or Flint in the way? IE: If I were to enter Gilber's square, could I breath down at the dragon so the angle prevents either Flint or Gilbert from being roasted with it?

Oh, and for now, are we using the [test] tags, or normal dice tags?[/ooc]

at the stage we're at, dragon's first attempt failed cuz of AoO hit, but second melee touch attack hit, so both have to do opposed grapple checks?

[ooc]Hate to do this, but grapple isn't over yet.

Ishy, the second grapple hit, and you didn't get an AoO due to lack of second AoO. You need to make a grapple check to beat the Dragon's grapple check result of 14. Alternatively, since you were grapple, I'm pretty sure you can make an escape artist attempt.

Sorry for nit-pickyness, I played a rogue who paired up with a grappling half-dragon for uber sneak attack once and know the grapple rules pretty well.[/ooc]

The grapple didn't pass, since my touch AC is 15, and the dragon rolled 14 twice ... and I don't think the dragon has Improved Grapple (unless daggerhart says so), so I should get an AoO as well, according to that diagram up above.[/ooc]
Title: Random Encounter: The Black Dragon of Swantville

[ooc]That 14 was to grapple you. His second touch attack, made in the inital grapple post, (it's in the Spoiler) was a 21: more than enough.

And you only get one AoO a round, unless you have improved AoO.[/quote]

Okay, I think this is where we are in the grapple thing.

The Dragon missed Gilbert with it's first grapple check (it rolled a 14 versus my touch AC of 15).

I rolled an AoO and presumably hit (Attack roll = 19 versus Dragon AC 19).

The dragon made a second attack roll and hit (rolled 21 versus my touch AC 15, or regular AC 16, I honestly don't know what he was rolling against there, was it a regular attack?)

Which means I need to roll an opposed grapple check now, I believe.

So....

Opposed Grapple Check(Attack + STR MOD - SIZE MOD) Versus the Dragon's 14:
[dice]1d20+2-4[/dice]

Edit: I failed, so the dragon has Gilbert in its claws now.... is that all correct?
Edit#2: And that AoO I made above that hit was the only one I've made this round; so why can't I take it?
[/ooc]

Title: Random Encounter: The Black Dragon of Swantville
Post by: Xathan on April 23, 2006, 01:57:50 PM
[ooc]You get it right, you are now held by the dragon.

I don't get your second question: you made the AoO, it hit, the dragon took damage. That was for the first grapple attempt. Then their was the second one, and you couldn't make an AoO because you already had.

Hope that helps clear things up.[/ooc]
