Norton, from my experience is 100% worthless.  It did absolutely nothing when I had it and left my computer worthless.

McAfree seems to be a little bit better but that isn't saying much of anything.

For my money, AVG is the best.  You can get it at http://www.grisoft.com

I'm told that this PC-cillian program is good as well and it hasn't seriously failed me yet.

I'm using Avira. It's also free and works on Vista. So far, I haven't had any bad experiences with it.

I agree with D. I have always stood firm to the statement that AVG is worth well over a million times what I paid for it.

Oh well, we just ended up reinstalling McAfee, mostly casue my dad is an internet paranoia nut and barely trusts anything...he even wipes BitTorrent every time he sees it on our PC! >.<

Well Uranium, there's always the saying "if you are using file-sharing programs, you don't need a firewall or antivirus program". :P

I think I may download one of these when my PC-Cillin subscription runs out in 2008... Cillin is nice for detecting and protecting, but it seems to have some bugs regarding websites where my computer tends to lock-up entirely, especially when I have a few windows open.

Who here uses Norton?  I got a free copy the other day, and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth putting on my computer in place of AVG?  I know AVG works, but I just don't know if one's better than the other.

AVG is worth about a million times what I paid for it.
Of course, I use AVG free... so... :poke:

Were I work uses Norton. Whenever I need to scan a computer at work I don't use Norton, I end up going to Trendmicro and using their housecall. It works so much better.

I use Symantec. It works well enough for me.

Sounds like I'll just stick with AVG then... I figured since it was free, may be worth trying Norton, but I'm pretty happy w/ AVG.

I agree with using AVG. I have been using it for years and never had a problem with it. And it has stopped a number of viruses.

What about anti-spyware? Does AVG deal with that or?

Adaware is good for that was well.

Trendmicro's housecall will also scan for spyware. (Only thing is you have to run it through IE, I've had trouble running it through Firefox or Netscape)

Ish, does this free version of AVG keep staying free or does the trial eventually run out? Mine says it's valid until the end of November... what happens then?

It should stay free...  If it does stop working you might've grabbed an old install file. Look around their site and try and find another.

I was just over at my university's IT department and we talked viruses for a while.  They said ASG was the best thing on the market, and it's free.  They also said that they'll uninstall Norton as soon as possible.  As Brainface said, having a virus is better than having Norton.  Also, getting the new Spybot, Search and Destroy is the best anti-spyware program on the market.  And it's free too.

McAfee's not bad, but it's not the best.  AVG and Spybot.  Also, CCleaner is nice if you have it.
