So I decided that we need some more PbP action around here and figured I'd run something since I generally have the time to do so. The big question is, are there enough of you who would want to play?
So if I do get enough people interested I'll throw something together set in my setting. Since there isn't a whole lot posted for it yet (which should be changing as soon as the server switch bugs get worked out) I'm going to throw the new map of Karis up here and let those who are interested decide on what city to play in. One rule, Lea Monde and Irva are out as options. I'm already running a Pbp game set in Lea Monde and my group IRL is in Irva. So for diversity reasons, pick one of the other 8 cities.

:EIDT:
ALright, So it looks like we will be playing in Xian. I'm going to say starting level will be 5th, standard starting gold (9,000gp), all WoTC published material is availalble (although run your ideas by me first for the final 'inspection').
Quick Notes: Favored Class works a bit differently in Shattered Kingdoms. Instead of your race having a favored class, it is determined by your home region. Xian's faovred classes are sorcerer, bard, and fighter. So you can choose any one of those three as your favored class if your home region is Xian. If you want a specific favored class I can let you know what regions have it as favored, as well as give you some info on that region.
I'm in. Talos looks like fun.
Sweet, now we just need a few more.
I'll go! Ever since Captain Obvius' Shadows Rising has been on stanby i've been lookign for a new one.
Can i play as a Jedi as found in the PEACH Orchard on the WOTC class boards?
No sorry. But here's the big reason.
Psoinics = the force
Howabouts the "Archer" from that same place?
Wow, those abilities are worded pretty poorly. It appears like it's pretty much the scout class with a full bab and less skills though. You'd prolly be better off going with a ranger/scout with the swift hunter feat. But if you want to use it you can.
Any idea what level we start at? It may help me decide class/race.
prolly low-mid level (between 4 and 6ish)
Alright, I think im gonna go with a class from WOTC boards then. Ill tell you the options in a bit to see if any are ok.
Once we get whatever number of players MittenNinja wants, we should probably powwow a bit and figure out a team first, then design from that.
I'm just sick of being in ragtag groups that have no reason being together in the first place, you know?
Yeah, I agree. usually in my games my DM says (when starting out), "Okay. You guys have been [Insert connection here] for several years and know each other well. Lets start."
Hey, is a Revised Paladin okay with you? (Its from the PEACH Orchard on WOTC boards)
What's wrong with a standard class?
As said on the WOTC forums at one point or another somewhere in time, "All the PrC's that WOTC makes can all be compiled into 1 book: Complete Crap." And, well, I would like to play a paladin, but frankly, the core class sucks. I'd probably end up taking Grey Guard from CS, its not that bad and allows my paladin more strechyness with his code. Either Pladin or Knight for me. Or Dragoon on the PEACH Orchard (The one whose main attack style is giant leaps.)

I'd take knight if our gracious DM would allow us to switch the knight's code with the paladin's.
Yeah. I want the flavor of the Knight (tankish, taunty) except in a more merc form. (not lawful)
The thing is, again, everything you want to do can be done (and done well) with WoTC material. You want an alignment restriction free knight/paladin style character? Use the Crusader(which make better tanks than knights and have way cooler special abilities than a pally). I'm running a FF Dragoon style character right now in a campaign who is a warblade/fighter. Also there are the alignment variant paladins (paladin of freedom, tyranny, and slaughter).
I'm a big advocate of using official material when it can do what you want.
Also yes, it would be best to wait til we get everyone that's going to play in here before we start pumping out characters.
I'd be using things like that, except i don't have the books for them.
MittenNinja, could you perhaps post some information here of wherever it is we're going to play, so we can at least test the water?
All the variant palladins are available on the SRD I believe. As far as other material you could try finding some of it online. That is if you're okay with the legality (or lack thereof) of it.
The info is really going to depend on what city we play in. Assuming Talos will be the city of choice, it will be a more oriental/mayan kind of feel to it with exotic fighting styles. It's in a jungle area and most play would be inspired from many wuxia style films.
If we end up going with a different city however it could be nothing like that.
Well that doesn't sound as fun.
Could you write up a sentence or two on our options, so we're not guessing simply based on the name and location?
I don't have some of the cities completely fleshed out yet, so I can't get too detailed on some of them. BUT, here's what I can get fairly detailed with right at this moment.
Also, The DNDOG site has been down for a few days now, and I'm not sure how things will go over when (or if) it does come back up. So Lea Monde may vary well be an option.
Lea Monde: A military city with strong faith and honor. Nearly half of the current population consists of the dwarven refugees of Ironridge Keep, a dwarven city that was overrun during the Abyssal Wars. The winters here are cold and frigid, while the summers are hot and humid.
Xian: A city founded and run by dragons and those of draconic ancestry. Strong ties to alchemy, sorcery, and the arcane are present. Lady Elsa has just taken the throne (and is the first non true dragon to hold that position in the cities history) and is beginning to push the city in new directions.
Kallum's Bluff: A sprawling city run by a council of merchant lords, knightly orders, and the many other organizations that have sway within the city limits. It's basically this world's version of waterdeep.
There's a few to tickle your fancy. I'll get some more for the other cities soon (hopefully by the end of the night or sometime tommorrow.
Xian. Xian, Xian, Xian, Xian, XIAN!
Yea, Xian is (in my opinion) one of the coolest pillar cities I've fleshed out thus far.
*busts out the draconomicon and races of the dragon*
This will be FUN. I don't suppose you'd let me play as a full dragon, then, would you?
Don't forget Dragon Magic!
Sadly enough, I don't have that one...
Seriously though, could I?
You guys will pretty much have free reign on any WoTC material. Just run your idea by me first.
*jaw falls out of socket*
'U us ade...
*picks up and replaces jaw*
You just made my day.
Wait...did he just say what I think he said? If so.....[Insert Subtle Maniacal Laughter Here]
Is a human sorceror with Draconic, Celestial, and Infernal heritage okay? :D
um... let me see... I'm thinking no, unless you can come up with a believable background.
How long do I have to come up with it? I was either thinking that, a dragon, or a swashbuckler with spiked-chain-fu
I'm off to go look up the level adjustment of various dragons... Do you hold with 'dragons, color-coded for your convenience' malarkey or no?
The one thing about dragons in SK that's different from normal is that dragons of any color can be any alignment just like humans. So there could be CE Gold Dragons or LG Reds.
oh yeah...
see above for my initial response.
Stargate if you play a dragon, would you let me be a dragon rider and let me ride you? :P
Updated the 1st thread with some more info on character creation and such.
I may be interested in joining but I'm a little leery players playing dragons.
I'll read through the setting and make my decision off that.
edit: you weren't kidding when you said there wasn't much up on the site.
edit: Would it be possible to post some of the information in the homebrewed section?
But Poseidon, playing a dragon is a, cool as heck and b, comes with a hefty LA, or at least racial levels.
Besides, we'll probably spend most of our time in human form...

If you are a dragon, I could make a dragon rider and ride you. :P [even in human form]
I'm not saying that it would stop me from playing, but I've seen games fall apart because the players were given free reign.

whoa, hey, I don't swing that way bud.
Seriously though, I wouldn't mind having a rider too terribly. I'd have to see and make sure that I'd actually be able to support you first, though.
I was [half*] kidding. I don't know what I would play.
*I haven't looked at my Draconomicaoniandllansdmaleasdn book in a long time so I don't know what classes in there would be interesting.
MittenNinja, how rare or fitting would dragon hunters be? Asking because I have an idea for party cohesion. I was thinking about making a reformed dragon hunter. He became reformed after meeting and conversing with Stargate [if he plays a dragon].
Quote from: PoseidonMittenNinja, how rare or fitting would dragon hunters be? Asking because I have an idea for party cohesion. I was thinking about making a reformed dragon hunter. He became reformed after meeting and conversing with Stargate [if he plays a dragon].
That would be awesome.
Stargate what class/party role are you planning on filling with your dragon?
Yogurt same question without the with your dragon?
Probably mage. Seriously though, we shoul.d all play dragons. It would be awesome. and it seems that we all have the Draconomicon. *posting from UCLA now, at a programming camp there learning J# & C++ (not trying to drag this off topic)*, but it would be pretty cool for an all-dragon party. If we were all the same type, we could be like broodmates or something. Although, I would rather play Infernal-Celestial-Draconic Heritage Sorceror.
I'm pretty set in my [reformed] Dragon Slayer character, so no dragon for me. :)
I'm just trying to decide my classes for the character. I was thinking of mixing a warlock with a fighting type [Probably from ToB:Bo9S]. Since your going to be a mage, my character will probably be more fighter type than warlock. But I have a few other options if Stargate wanted to be a fighter type. I could go the roguish route. The only type I don't have an option for is a divine caster.
Playing true dragons may make things messy. I'm not all too familiar with the rules for it, plus there are way more half-dragons and dragontouched than true dragons. In the entire metropolis there are somewhere between 30 and 40 True dragons walking about. with a population of nearly 85,000 thats a vary small percentage.
As far as posting the material I have most of it all ready to go in website format and I'm just waiting for the hosting to become available again. But in the meantime here's the entry on Xian...
"Watch your step here young ones. You walk the streets with the oldest and most powerful creatures in all the land."
- Karth Ebonflame, Xian Dragon Guard
Xian has always had a long tradition of draconic heritage in it's history. It's royal bloodline is thick with dragon ancestry and has had many (and up until recently, exclusively) true dragons as it's lord. Lady Elsa however, is the first non true dragon to ever hold the throne. If it weren't for the fact that she is a direct descendant of Abalax, one of the greatest rulers in the city's long history, the skepticism of her taking the throne would have easily led to her demise.
Architecture:
The great dragon city is truly a sight to behold for those who look upon it. Beyond the gold and red walls and majestic standards over the golden gates that protect the city from the ravages of the Wasted Plains lie hundreds of sparkling spires with grand walkways connecting them to one another. Throughout the entire city there is hardly a structure that isn't directly connected with another nearby via walkway. The most impressive structure (and one of the few without direct access to surrounding structures) is the Maw. The Maw is the great towering palace where Lady Elsa and the other royalty reside. Atop the Maw resides it's most dominant feature, a large smokestack or sorts that is constantly bellowing out green gases which are vented from the Maw's alchemy labs (known as the greatest in all of Karis).
Demographics:
Xian is the only city in Karis where you are likely to ever run into a true dragon walking down the street browsing through the wares being sold in the market. For the most part all the true dragons that reside within the walls keep to humanoid forms as to not intimidate the smaller folk of the city. Humans make up the largest group of Xian's populace, but even so a large portion of them can trace their ancestry back to draconic roots. No race is shunned from the city and (especially since the Abyssal Wars) many people who originally lived in the surrounding areas flocked to the great city.
History:
Originally founded three hundred years before the start of the Abyssal Wars, Xian was a small merchant village populated by many individuals with ties to the draconic world. However, the villagers had unintentionally settled within the hills of Abalax's liar. Abalax was a great bronze wyrm who ended up taking interest in the dragon bloods that now inhabited his realm and offered his services as a protector in exchange for a small yearly tribute in wealth. Not willing to pass up the protection of a powerful dragon the citizens of Xian quickly accepted.
Through the years Xian's populace grew, and so did the city's draconic influence. Within 50 years of it's founding, Xian already had 8 true dragons among it's citizens. The city was gaining popularity as a gathering place for all those with draconic heritage. Dragons of all walks came to share information with their peers (and barter their services for tribute to those who would seek them out).
At the start of the Abyssal Wars Abalax was now the first Lord of Xian, and as the infernal armies marched he personally led the defense of his people. Abalax managed to fend off the forces of three abyssal lords before his life was taken in the midst of battle. After seeing their lord fall to the powers of the lower planes, Xian's forces rose with a vigor unseen by man, they held the lines for two solid weeks while reinforcements were en route. After hearing of Abalax's fall, dragons from all walks came to Xian to help rid the city of the plague that had arrived.
The years of the war were long and hard, 21 lords and ladies of Xian fell to the hordes of the abyss during the 100 year siege of the city. The 22nd Lord of Xian, Carrick the Vigilant, a silver dragon of immense valor saw the city through it's final days of war. Carrick then saw the city through it's regrowth. Conscripting the building of many of the structures that are present to this day, including The Maw. After the city was rebuilt in all its golden glory Carrick stepped down from the throne knowing that he was a leader of a warring nation and not a lord for peaceful times. He handed the throne to Lady Elsa, a human female directly descended from the first Lord of Xian, Abalax.
did you read the news? It's up again!
What about dragon hunters? Rare?
How do you want us to do our abilities? Roll 4d6 drop lowest? Point Buy?
I like using this dice roller, is it ok? http://invisiblecastle.com/rolldice.py
If you say roll stats, I will roll under Shattered Kingdoms and put Poseidon in the note (this way you can see I only rolled once, playing other places I've had people keep rolling until they got the stats they wanted.).
I didn't see that! I'll be getting that up and running soon then.
And yes do 4d6 drop lowest and afterwards if you're not happy you can use a 32 point buy.
Well the thing is I looked at the charts, and I'll be doing pretty much dragon racial levels for a while.
And I'll be 1-3 years old, essentially a newly hatched one.
What if Poseidon found me irresistibly cute ( :D ) after he killed my parents (way away from this society), and decided to keep me. After I changed his ways (being the cute little guy I am), we decided to come here so that we could actually have a life without me being always in my alternate form.
Once I can actually get character levels, I'll probably go with a fighter type.
oh yeah, and MittenNinja, my La is going to be absolutely crippling, especially as it grows. Could I use the variant La payoff rules to keep it to something reasonable, especially since I'm going to have to take dragon levels too?
I'm not to sure if I'm going to allow true dragon PC's yet. I will definatly be allowing half-dragons, spellscales, dragonborn, the racial variants from dragon magic etc. though.
*prays*
Well if your going fighter, I guess I'm going to go with a roguish type.
please? and if true dragon PC's are allowed, these the ones I would like: Either Prismatic, Radiant, Golden, Red, Green. And SG, where are the racial level charts for dragons, as in what book?
draconomicon page 143.
If you allow it, definitely going copper or brass, simply because their LA is somewhat decent.
If mittenNinja says no I wouldn't push it any more. Though if no one plays a dragon I have to come up with another concept...
we could be a group of merc dragon hunters...
yeah that'll go over well in a city of DRAGONS!
Dragonhunter: "I am looking for dragons."
Commoner: "Well you came to the right place this is the city of dragons. What is your business with the dragons if I might ask."
Dragonhunter: "I plan to rid the world of the vile beasts. I am a dragon slay...."
*40 breath weapons later*: A charred, frozen, and melting corpse stands in place of the dragon hunter. Two of his companions have run as fast and as far as they can. While leaving one was heard saying "I'm glad he used I instead of we".
Actually it would take some retooling, but we could pull it off.
We're a bunch of assassins here to pull off the best hit in history; off an entire city of dragons!
...I like the dragon companion thing better.
If he bans true dragons, how about a pseudodragon? A pseudodragon rogue would kick ass, and you could pretend I'm your familiar or something...
I must have missed something here...city of dragons?

There are some emboldened areas in the spoiler block as well.
ohhhhh...for some reason i thought xian was a person!
I like pizza!
So do I!
What quote?
What was that?
Anyway, I've decided to go with the pseudodragon, unless MittenNinja won't allow that.
Poseidon, I'd still love to see something made of that first idea we had, but I'm not quite certain how that'll go down now. If you want to drop it, that's fine too, but lets see if we can't figure something out.
Psuedodragons are cool.
And sorry guys, I've thought about it and I'm going to have to say no to true dragons.
Quote from: MittenNinjaPsuedodragons are cool.
Rock on.
Poseidon, do you still want to have some sort of backstory concerning both our characters? I'm open to whatever, but if you're willing to be an arcane caster, it would be interesting to have me as a former (or perhaps current) familiar. Just a thought.
MN, I'll list off what I think are the stats, let me know if these are off;
*-4 str, +4 dex, +2 con, +2 wis
*tiny
*speed: 15ft.; 60ft. flight speed (good maneuverability)
*+4 natural armor bonus
*Blindsense 60 ft.
*darkvision 60 ft.
*immunity to sleep and paralysis
*low-light vision
*spell resistance 19
*telepathy 60 ft.
*sting(poisoned) and bite attacks
*LA +3
Will you allow me to make use of the LA buyoff rules in the SRD?
Poison (Ex):Injury, Fortitude DC (12+Con mod), initial damage sleep for 1 minute, secondary damage sleep for 1d3 hours. The save DC is Constitution-based and includes a +2 racial bonus.
Telepathy (Su):Pseudodragons can communicate telepathically with creatures that speak Common or Sylvan, provided they are within 60 feet. I was thinking that since I can't actually speak, that me learning a language is being able to use this with someone of that language.
Skills: Pseudodragons have a chameleonlike ability that grants them a +4 racial bonus on Hide checks. (In forests or overgrown areas, this bonus improves to +8.)
and my ability rolls... I won't be doing here, since I have horrible luck with them... I got 15, 17, 10, 16, 11, 8. Tell me if that's all right.
Don't forget the racial hit dice. Other than that looks right. And as far as the telepathy goes, learning languages would allow you to communicate with other beings. At least that's how I'd rule it.
racial hit dice? :?:
The creature in the MM is advanced to two hit die, but I couldn't find a reference saying a PC would require racial hit dice... It's quite possible that I'm wrong, but is there something I'm missing?
yeah, thats the racial hit die. It's not advanced to 2HD, that's how much they start with. So effectively youd be a fifth lvl PC as a pseudodragon. +3 LA plus 2 racial HD = ECL5
Well bugger. If that be the case, then I guess I've got everything I need... Expect my character up here by friday.
Yogurt has said he was going to make a mage, so I am making a rogue/swashbuckler. So I wouldn't get a familiar.
Since there are no true dragons in the party, I'm going away from the reformed slayer as well. I'm sure there will be ways to interweave our characters.
Do you have something in mind?
Not until I see more of the characters. Including mine. I need to develop a new background now.
Please, please can i get all 3 heritage feats? I've been wanting to play that char for a loooong time. If given enough time I could come up with a believeable backstory!
Well get cracking, I'll decide if you can after I see the backstory.
couple a questions.
How do you handle hit points? I've seen about three methods, so I want to make sure I do it right.
Also, what do you want me to do about my class skills? There is no list, so just don't worry about it, or what?
Third, most of the gear I took is magic items. I assume that I had them sized for me. Is that a problem? (otherwise I got nothing to spend it on but a box and a bunch of coins for a horde)
Couple of answers...
For HP: Max HP for your first HD and then roll for the rest.
For Skills: Treat everything that is listed in the Psuedodragon entry under skills as a class skill, everything else is cross-class (Except for the ones that are normally class exclusive)
As far as items go yeah, I would assume you would get ones sized for you.
Well, I wont be able to get a backstory for a week and 3 days at least.
alright then.
ah, I forgot one. Weapon finesse is listed under the feats as a bonus feat, do I get that?
Sorry for asking so many questions, but I want to make sure we aren't a couple days into it and something come up.
[dice]1d12+12[/dice]
You get one feat because of your racial hit dice as it's effectively 2 levels. So you can pick any feat you qualify for.
Why is that yogurt?
Quote from: MittenNinjaYou get one feat because of your racial hit dice as it's effectively 2 levels. So you can pick any feat you qualify for.
That part I know. But I point you to the relevant info.
Note the two feats listed. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/pseudodragon.htm)
Bonus feat description. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/intro.htm#feats)
see why I'm confused?
Then yeah, you get weapon finesse for free in addition to a feat of your choice.
The real question is can you weapon finesse a pseudodragon?
A drunken master could! Improvised Weaponry!
*quickly builds a drunken master*
Drunken Master: *grabs pseudodragon* ON GUARD you fie *hic* nd
What are the deities like in Shattered Kingdoms? Walk the earth? Nonexistent? Unimportant in daily life? Important?
I haven't gotten around to fleshing out the religion aspect of the world yet (i want to get the actual world up and running first). So for now just use the standard pantheon.

ok, when I said our characters could have a relation, this is NOT what I had in mind.
Utterly ridiculous, my ac is 21, I'm tiny, I've got a hide modifier of 25, and a flight speed. I guess I'm going to be the mobile lookout.
Oh yeah, and ring of sustenance; I only sleep 2 hours!
damnit. MittenNinja, I need to ask another question... theres this item in the Magic item compendium that allows you to speak and understand one language. I was curious; if I have that item, would it allow me to speak (only that one language, naturally)?
Whats the item called?
Pearl of Speech, page 118
Yea, looks like it would.
cool.
I'll be back on friday, at which point I will post out my stats.
ha, an hour early!

Character Background and Description
Stris's first year is something he doesn't talk much about. The main details are that he was hatched as the pet of an adventurer of some wealth and infamy, and he acted as the man's companion and accomplice. Oddly enough, Stris outlived his master, and has been wandering about in search of someone to replace him. His small wealth and several magic items are supposedly gifts from his former master.
I cant do any real work because I'm at a programming camp learning C++, J#, and C# for another week. As I type I'm at a computer lab in UCLA watching "Labyrinth". You know, the one with David Bowie....so ridiculous. Not to drag it off topic, but I finally made my first working not very tiny program! Its a very basic thing, choosing between text blackjack and ASCII horse race.
oh yeah. I tried to keep my description to an outline. If you get an idea that would require me to tweak it, that's exactly what I had in mind.
Im back for the weekend so I'll have my character up sometime soon.
Couple of questions stargate. (feel free to respond via PM if you don't want eveyrone to know)
1.) Are you from Xian? If not, where are you originally from?
2.) Was your relationship with your past master pleasant? Or more rocky?
3.) How did your past master die?
4.) What reasons do you have for seeking out a new master as opposed to striking out on your own?
Man, that's what I get for trying to do just an outline. I am not an outline man.
Quote from: MittenNinjaCouple of questions stargate. (feel free to respond via PM if you don't want eveyrone to know)
1.) Are you from Xian? If not, where are you originally from?
Doesn't really matter. Feel free to select the most appropriate spot based on the Pm would will be getting.
Quote from: MittenNinja2.) Was your relationship with your past master pleasant? Or more rocky?
Stris speaks of his former master as though he was a close and dear friend. Nothing he says disputes this.
Quote from: MittenNinja3.) How did your past master die?
PM
Quote from: MittenNinja4.) What reasons do you have for seeking out a new master as opposed to striking out on your own?
I should have been more clear. By Master I meant that he technically owned Stris, and was responsible for his antics and such. The relationship was never like a master, but it was the closest word I could think of. Stris is striking out on his own in the sense that his next traveling companion wouldn't own him.
I'll see if I can't reword that.

Character Background and Description:
Kevkas was born and raised in the countryside, on his family's farm. He had just turned 11 when he was sent away from the farm to go to a school of war to learn how to be a warrior. After 4 months at the school, his family was killed by raiders. He left the school and trained with an old wizard who specialized in trickery. He has been hunted by the law ever since he hunted down and killed each member of the raiding party that killed his family.
One problem with your background yogurt. There really isn't any countryside to speak of because of the abyssal wars just ending. Small communities have just only recently begun to spring up now that the fiends have been pushed back to the Demonscar. So you pretty much have to either have been raised in the wilderness (most likely by druids/rangers) or from one of the ten pillar cities.
How about having family die due to wars instead of raiders? And he hunted down and killed the demon that did it, and he is hunted by the law because the demon was hiding as a high-ranking noble in a city, but no one knew it was really the demon.
That would work. So now the question is what city are you from?
Kallum's Bluff
Jedi: Wouldn't a keen scythe cost 8318gp? Since it would effectively be a +2 scythe, because to put keen on anything it has to already be a +1.
OMG where did you roll your stats? I wish the dice gods where that nice to me.
Well I was almost finished with a character. Unless we want two rogues in a party of three, I guess it's back to the old drawing board.
*cough* arcane spellcaster! *cough* Fake Familiar! *cough*

Yeah I mentioned that to him. It's just going to be a +1 Scythe.

Be a pixie, Poseidon!
Quote from: PoseidonI was thinking the drunken master.

oh great, so Yogurt has to deal with the midget brigade?
Take both spellcaster and monk levels, then go enlightened fist(prestige class in complete arcane, I think that's the name). Just a thought.
And Yogurt, you don't direct coughs silly. And that's ALL it was. :D
Since SOMEONE *coughyogurtcough* said they were playing a mage and not the rogue version of a paladin, I had to change the character I was making AGAIN *coughnotruedragonpartymemberscough* . :P
I think I am going to make a fighting type mixed with Dragonfire Adept (just picked up Dragon Magic). *picks up baseball bat* And if I have to change again for any reason *smacks bat into palm of hand*
As MittenNinja can tell you it isn't that big of a deal, I had many characters on the chopping blocks and was racked with indecision.
*dons catchers outfit*
*puts on asbestos suit*
uh, poseidon, I was planning on taking dragonfire adept next level, since my two were taken by racial levels...
**#$^^%@% You didn't even have the *&#^$%@&&@ book, now you want to play a *#&&#^^!@###$^ dragonfire adept.*@^$^@*&
Its ok. I'm going to be focusing on melee mostly with Dragonfire adept to enhance him. Two dragonfires in a party isn't as bad as two rogues with the same skills.
I think I may join up. So long as I can do my usual thing and play something scaryish.
Thoughts include a spiker monk, a dread necromancer (to have mother cyst and eventually go cancer mage), or an abberation descended druid (eventually get that symbiont class from magic of Eb)
Just to let you know beejazz, I'm going to veto the cancer mage. As far as the abberation druid, I would have to see the material first. Spiker Monk is all good though.
Yeah... most people veto the cancer mage. It makes me sad that I can't find a game that'll let me have a talking (or is it telepathic?) tumor. Oh well.
In any case, the aberration druid thing comes from lords of madness. It's a feat that lets you wild shape as an aberration. It requires that aberration blood thing.
The symbiont PrC is from magic of Eberron. Basically, you pick up a symbiont and hunt down those warped horrors. In my case, I might have a bit of a grudge against the things that made me hated and feared by the world. I might not even have been born with aberration blood.
As far as personality goes... I'd probably be kinda feared or mistrusted by peoples. I'd probably begrudge both humans and monsters (the latter more than the former)... but would be fiercely loyal to what friends I had (having so few friends and all). Tend to be paranoid and secretive, though.
As for party role: A messed-up healer.
For the spiker monk? That's just spiked skin and grappling. If we're hunting dragons or really big monsters like that I might get kinda shafted, though.
Well the easiest way to be mistrusted by people in this setting is to have fiendish heritage. After the hundreds of years of the Abyssal Wars no one really likes them too much.

*coughs, dusts soot off suit, removes helmet* Glad I thought of that...
Perfect. Then I can go for battlefield control and sneakmonkey and we're set. And don't get all pissy at me, I went out and bought the book specifically for this campaign.
Quote from: Stargate525And don't get all pissy at me, I went out and bought the book specifically for this campaign.
I was at Barnes and Noble today and saw it, so I figured no one had the book I might find a class in there that nobody is using. So I picked it up.
Quote from: MittenNinjaWell the easiest way to be mistrusted by people in this setting is to have fiendish heritage. After the hundreds of years of the Abyssal Wars no one really likes them too much.
Yeah... I had thought of this. Fiends aren't usually my style, though... at least not in terms of stuff to play. And I'm sure your average human can't tell a fiendspawn from a deepspawn (or starspawn or whatever I am, depending on aberrations' origins) just by looking.
As fiendish options, though... I mean... what is there? Tiefling? LA and cha penalty for a darkness spell don't suit me very well. Half fiend way too much all around. And as little heritage feats go, aberrations strike me as just being cooler (also not being so... magic?)
Also, I might go with something else class-wise. Spirit shaman maybe. I dunno. I'll have to think on this stuff, overall.
There is the lesser tiefling as well as the fiendish template to work with as well. Or you could be a worshiper of one of the demon princes/devil lords, I'm sure that'd get some attention.
Quote from: PoseidonI was at Barnes and Noble today and saw it, so I figured no one had the book I might find a class in there that nobody is using. So I picked it up.
Oh the irony.
Oh well, the only thing better than a once-per-round breath weapon is another one, right?
And beejazz, might I suggest the Dragon Shaman form PHBII?
Quote from: MittenNinjaThere is the lesser tiefling as well as the fiendish template to work with as well. Or you could be a worshiper of one of the demon princes/devil lords, I'm sure that'd get some attention.
I'm not familiar with the lesser tiefling bit. And not into the whole demon worshipping cultist so much either.
They lose the resistances and are humanoids instead of outsiders and have no LA.
So we've got a pseudodragon dragonfire adept, a human beguiler, another dragon adept of unknown race, and 'something scaryish.'
The story on why we're traveling together should be mighty interesting methinks...
I concur. Can't wait to get things rolling.
This might be a bad time to say this, but could we wait two weeks? I'm leaving for alaska on friday and won't be back for ten-12 days.
Although if you want to start without me, go ahead, I'll just hop in when I get back.

Well I was going to leave my race secret and surprise you guys with it the first time I changed by it would be unfair for me to see your sheets and you not to see mine. :)
Markas is a changeling. (would've worked better as a rogue *grumble* *grumble*).
I will post the sheet when I am finished with the background.
meh, I wouldn't have minded. Hell, all the good stuff in my backstory you guys don't know.
Well I'm back. WE still on for this?
I'm still around.
good. I really, really want to play this character.
Is there yet room for another? I don't have anything at this instant, but if there's room, I can whip up something pretty quick. I'm not familiar with the setting, so I may need a bit of assistance.

I'll add more once I've had a chance to talk to the DM. I'm not even sure if I can join, so we'll leave it there for now, just a teaser.
I'm still here. And you are more than welcome to join in psycho. If you're a swordsage you prolly came from Talos. They tend to have the most concentrated amount of exotic fighting styles.
I think I'm just gonna play a gnome. Next couple days off, so expect it shortly. What class I don't know yet.

Keelhauling is sending the person via rope all the way under the ship and back up the other side. Usually resulted in drowning. At least as far as I know, anyway.
I don't really want to do that. :P
Well that's why they just have to slam a potion of water breathing down your throat first.
Keelhaul (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keelhauling)
Yeah. Waterbreathing. And Stoneskin.

*just kidding. You don't have to worry about me taking offense to much especially if it comes after a bunch of jokes. Besides to a guy by the name of Poseidon, that is a complement. :P

That takes all the fun out of it. :( But your the captain...
Wait I see what you're doing. Give him the potion to get his hopes up, but leave him down there longer than the potion's duration. I LIKE IT!
keelhauling is usually done with a weight, and has an actual purpose, which is to check for stuff stuck to the hull or propeller.
The punishment, I'm guessing, stemmed from one ship's lack of a weight and an annoying crewmember. ;)

Now a days yes. Old sailing ships didn't have props. :P Rudders yes, but not props.

It was an old pirate punishment (the kind ones just made you walk the plank). Whether it was a captive, or a mutinous crew member when the captain was upset someone got the barnacle back scratch. :)

A barnacle is a creature of the sea, thus cannot be ugly. :P

He has been hunted by the law ever since he hunted down and killed each member of the raiding party that killed his family.

updated.
And Poseidon and our Barber, are there backstories we can munch on?
You'll have to ask the mitteninja to pass it along. I sent it in a PM and I don't feel like typing it out again.
Markas likes cheese....
Quote from: PoseidonMarkas likes cheese....
okay then...
As far as Duncan's (Barber's) background goes here's what he gave me.
Pale's problem was never that he was a bad a student. In fact, many of his teachers considered him to be too good a student. For a student of the art of swordfighting he was a little...bookish.
While the others would spend their extra hours working in the training yard, Pale would spend them reading books. Books about fighting, yes, but the books were never quite as good as learning by doing.
After an argument with one of his masters, Pale left in a huff on foot (or possibly stealing a small boat, if he could be the sailing type) for Ceros. He took some books from the library with him, all but one of which have been lost, burnt in the wilderness, or traded away.
He enjoyed his travels, never really wanting to return, though it's probably someone is after him for the books he took. He learns new maneuvers (at level up) from the book he has left.
After Ceros, he traveled through Irva and Belston before arriving in Xian, looking to trade his manual of the Setting Sun, possibly to find a manual of the Diamond Mind, or a teacher who was more receptive of his personal learning style. (I kind made these books up, but feel free to run with it, if you like).
For balance and play reasons, he'll have maneuvers from disciplines other than Setting Sun, but Setting Sun will be his style of combat, redirecting strength. Feel free to add anything you think might integrate him with the party.
Attached is the character sheet. Any rolls have been made in my first post.
Philosophy of Combat: Anybody who's a book-learner AND a fighter probably has one of these
Everything (including things outside of combat) can be represented as a pattern. Some patterns are easy to decipher, some are not, but if you understand the pattern, you can apply it to any similar situation: Understanding the pattern is superior to understanding any specific maneuver.
If you can identify the pattern your opponent is using, you've essentially won. It's like having foresight. (This all very lawful, I know).
The greatest swordsmen hide their patterns, and make them flexible. The greatest pattern is like a quantom electron (he wouldn't think of it that way, but it's a good analogy): impossible to discern until it's already happening.
He's tried to explain his ideas with varying success. Only a couple people in Talos ever listened, and they were younger than him. He's either an up-and-coming genius or mistaken: Your choice. It won't affect his combat numbers anyway.
And here's what I added.
Duncan studied at the Four Winds Monestary in Talos under the hand of Liu Ze. Duncan's father was an accomplished martial artist and handed down to him a scroll that contained his family's techniques. This is the scroll that he retains possession of currently. Not everything written within the scroll is achievable to you at this point and it is your family's legacy so it's something that you probably wouldn't part with.
Talos is home to a majority of the martial arts instructors of the world and so finding others elsewhere will be more difficult, especially in Xian since it is a city with a strong arcane focus, but not impossible.
The world is recently recovering from a worldwide demonic war that lasted well over a century and so during your travels you have seen and been involved with many dealings with the infernal. How you want this to have affected Duncan is up to you.
So then were just waiting on beejazz right?
Anyone heard from yoda?
Markas still likes cheese....
When I figure out how we are starting off (as a group or individuals), I will post anything relevant from Markas's background.
Hey while we're waiting, could some one look over my character sheet and see if I made any mistakes?
Quote from: PoseidonHey while we're waiting, could some one look over my character sheet and see if I made any mistakes?
You've got no total HP, but other than that it looks good.
Would that imply his character is literally a meatshield? Since he has no HP, thus no health, thus no life, he wouldnt mind being stuck with a few thousand arrows and/or axes now and then. In fact, he would be able to benefit from this experience, he would in fact gain massive levels of the class Meatshield (aka PHB Fighter), then after twenty useless levels, he would finally learn the ultimate attack of the class: Axe stab
Voranlllezou, I think you're thinking too hard. A character with no discernible HP just means a character without any J.K. Rowling.
Or something like that.
Rolled HP and put the link to it in the notes section of his character sheet.
Well, hows this? If you guys would like to figure out for yourselves why you would be together (for whatever reason) feel free to discuss amongst yourselves. If anyone doesn't come up with a connection I'll use my magical DM powers to make up a way to introduce you myself.
Well, I'm leaving tomorrow so I'll probably have to be introduced a bit later, but Duncan is a fairly nice guy who travels a lot, so the possibilities are basically endless.
I'm pretty open too, the only stipulation is that you guys would have had to have met me fairly recently.
Poseidon, sine you're a dragonfire adept, and I'll be too, you want us to have met up somehow? Of the guys who've got characters, you'd probably make the most sense for my character to know.
I had a strange idea, if there were three of us. I would pretend to be a wizard with SG as my "familiar". Poseidon would be the fighter. We essentially hustle people with fighting, where SG and I would set up the matches, and Poseidon would fight with me spamming Black Karma Curse Silenced or Still, and we would each split the money.
What is your character, Voran?
I like the idea. One of the first ideas I had with this character, oddly enough, was to fake as someone's familiar.
I'm a beguiler.
You threw me off, with you and your name changing-ness.
Markas is too honest to con people out of their money. He works for his money, even if he doesn't like his job.
And there are four of us, if beejazz ever finishes.
I will try to put up a snipet of Markas's background
an honest changeling...? All that wasted potential too. ;)
Honest enough not to con innocent people out of their money....
There is still potential in being a changeling. :)
To tell the truth, Stris probably wouldn't do something outright dishonest; there would have to be a way to win/spot the trick. But if they can't spot the trick then they deserved to get tricked. Does that make sense?
Quote from: Stargate525To tell the truth, Stris probably wouldn't do something outright dishonest; there would have to be a way to win/spot the trick. But if they can't spot the trick then they deserved to get tricked. Does that make sense?
No. That is like a thief trying to justify a robbery by saying: "They only had bars I could slip through and an alarm system I could bypass by shutting off the power. They deserved to be robbed."
Or a murderer: "He didn't see me pull my dagger, so he deserved to be stabbed,"
I'd say it's more like the thief saying 'he left the door open, so he deserved it.'
Stris isn't a bad guy...dragon...thing, but his thought process in regards to his morality is probably a little bit bent.
And Poseidon, I wasn't really asking if the logic made sense, (which it doesn't) just the kind of thought I was trying to get across.

aahh I see....
actually that would work for an idea for Stris and Markas's meeting that I sent MittenNinja, while I was waiting for you to get back.
Basically it is like when Luke met Yoda. Stris would be hungry and see a pack next to a log and start looking through it for food.
heh heh, I like.
It's definitely something he would do, especially if some careless person left it out.
So who're we waiting on?
My beguiler is pretty much a con-artist, so howabouts he meets you two while you guys are say, in the woods, or some hidden area and he ambushes you two, pretending to be the God of Death. But, he beleives there to only one (Poseidon's char), and Stris comes and attacks him from behind, or something.
I was wondering if it was too late for another player to join up for this game?
We're waiting on beejazz.
@Sirius: If you'd like go ahead and roll up a char.
Here's a link to the description for Xian (http://www.freewebs.com/theshatteredkingdoms/Xian.html) if you need it to reference.
Since we've got three guys waiting in the wings, as it were, I've had an idea.
What if we start now, roleplay out the three of us meeting, and then go on as the others are ready? It'll somewhat restrict them in deciding how to join up, but at least we could get the ball rolling.
Or We could wait; I'm just throwing it out there.
That sounds good (The starting rp'ing now)
Game Thread up!
Woo!
Did you want to be traveling together Stargate? Or meet in game?
I don't care either way, it depends completely on your post.
If you leave a backpack sitting around, we'll meet in game. Else, I'll probably fly back and give you a report.

Seeing that the character is only 5th his back-story is going to be something every simple.
During the war, Thallin worked on both sides of the line, selling his services to the highest bidder. Amassing great wealth and power he lived a life that most dreamed of, but his life was hollow one. Thallins dark dealings had stripped him of his humanity. Wishing to regain what he had lost, Thallin left his old life behind. Thallin now walks the earth in search for his lost humanity.
Also I am still trying to figure out the vow feats. Most of them are rather good aligned and my character isn't, so it is a little hard.

Actually, unless you are good aligned you can't take the feats as they're exalted. So unfortunatly you'd ether have to be a good aligned character or pick something else.

Sorry, guys... between my virus-ridden comp and my house catching fire (luckily I was there, so not everything was torched) I'm not gonna be able to be online enough to participate.

Quote from: MittenNinjaShit, I'm sorry to hear that man. Well good luck, and if you do end up being able, you are welcome to join back in at a later time.
Thanks. If I do join, it'll probably be as a gnome archivist. Archivist being a wizard style class with a clerical spell list and some class features relating to an extensive knowledge of monsters. Hooray for sanctimonious know it alls.
But then... how long is this thing going to run? It might be a while before I can computerfy regularly.
Ah yes, I know the archivist well. As far as how long this will go, that entirely depends on how long everyone wants to keep going. While the group is going to be in Xian for some time that doesn't mean that they have to stay there after things have progressed. In fact, as long as I have interest from enough people (regardless if the originals are still around) i'll probably keep the game running.
Something I just realized I forgot to mention and/or check:
We won't be using Initiative for combat in game. Whoever posts first goes first. If any of you have taken feats or selected spells that boost initiative you are more than welcome to choose something else.
