Since there's a good number of students at the Guild...
1) Who starts school, and when?
2) What grade or year are you?
3) For college/university students, what's your major?
4) What classes are you taking?
My answers:
1) School for me starts on Monday.
2) I'm a sophomore in college.
3) I'm an English major.
4:
-Sociology (Gen. Ed)
-Biology (Gen. Ed)
-Creative Writing: Narrative Fiction
-Short Story and the Novel (a literature course)
So all in all, a light semester for yours truly. I took summer classes so I could ease my workload during the school year.
Let me see...
1) Wednesday the 22nd
2) Sophomore as well
3) English (with a creative writing emphasis) and political science (double major)
4) Introduction to Creative Writing, Political Institutions, Spanish II, College Algebra, and Issues in Higher Education
It'll be fun.
I'd go to school, but then I wouldn't have any time to pursue an education.
(Now that the joke is out, I'll be heading to college for a science degree... eventually.)
1) Next monday, leaving on Thursday. (this is also my note for why I won't be here that weekend.)
2) College Freshie
3) Secondary Ed, with focuses in History and Lit.
4) A bunch of stupid freshman courses. Hooray for having no electives!
1)September 5
2)High School Sophomore
3)I plan on Majoring in Theoretical Physics when I go to college, and possibly double major in Genetic Engineering
4)Spanish 2
AP Biology
AP European History
Honors Math Analysis
Honors 10th grade English
Physical Education

1. Classes start the 5th of September. I'm living in an apartment, though, and I've been around campus doing school-y stuff all summer.
2. Rising senior in college.
3. Classics (Greek & Latin)
4.
Survey of Fifth Century Greek Literature (Pindar to Aristophanes) *Hellenistic Poetry *Latin of the Court of Charlemagne *Introductory Modern Persian
1) I graduated from college already
2) See 1
3) Politics
4) See 1; also, I'm taking beginning blues harmonica at the local community college
I'm likely to remain class-free until I start going for my doctorate, whenever that happens.
Class starts Monday. I'm a second-year grad student in music theory, beginning the first year of my assistantship. So I'll be taking classes on the theory of rhythm (Theory: What if LC had rhythm??), devoting some hours to library research and composition lessons, and teaching undergraduate theory classes to freshmen.

This is the most awesome thing in the thread. You'll have to play us a tune sometime (please.)
1. Starting Thursday the 30th of August
2. Freshman year of college
3. Drama/English double major
4. Won't know my class schedule until the 26th
Quote from: Luminous CrayonThis is the most awesome thing in the thread. You'll have to play us a tune sometime (please.)
Though it wouldn't be so bad as to, say, make your ears bleed, I'm not sure hearing me play the harmonica is really what you want.

You can't scare me; I've taught 6th grade violin. :)
1. Starting 25th of September
2. College Freshman
3. Game Design CS Major
4. Class scheduling happens on the 23rd
It's very interesting learning what grades everyone is. It really puts a focus on just how mature several of our members are for their age. Several of our members are just entering college or aren't even out of it yet; nonetheless they act like they're graduates and have real lives. I love this guild -- it just proves that not all people my age and younger are imbeciles.
lol. I bet none of you could guess what grade im going into
Quote from: Atlantislol. I bet none of you could guess what grade im going into
8th?
maybe
You will tell us if we get it right?
I bet I got it right on the nose, eh? That or I'm so far off he's currently having spasms from laughter.
i might tell you if you get it right. I might not.
1)September. Details unclear.
2)I have half a year of university behind me. So, hovering somewhere between the first and the second year, I guess.
3)Math.
4)Logic, discrete mathemathics, philosophy, Swedish. A bit more philosophy, hopefully.
All in all, looks easy, aside from the Swedish and possibly philosophy.

I am right on line with Jhaviss, that most of the interaction within the threads is very much at an intellectual, adult level. The few times it is not is more of a lack of perspective issue, never a lack of intelligence. And one of the most 'adult' traits is very, very evident here, one that I wish was more ubiquitous in the so-called real world. The grace to listen to others, and give their words the same credence as your own.
Kudos.

4) What classes are you taking?
1) I'm not, but I probably should be. I realize college would help me out with skills I need and desire, but I don't quite have the initiative or patience to get started.
2) See 1
3) I would be majoring in some sort of graphic design.
4) See 1 & 3.
Atlantis: Are you either a college grad, or a HS grad that isn't in college yet? By the way, I find it kind of amusing that you started a guessing game immediately after a post that commented on the maturity of the site....
Not that you're immature, mind you, just the juxtaposition of the two posts.
maybe. yes, i realized that.
1) Next Monday, August 27th.
2) I'll be in my third year of college (not sure what the proper term is, sophomore means it's your second year, right?).
3) I'm actually doing two studies. If all goes as planned, I'll get my Bachelor's degree in Econometrics this year and both my Master's Degree in Econometrics and my Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy next year. I haven't decided yet whether I'll be doing a Master's in Philosophy after that. It's interesting to note the similarities and differences between these two fields that are so widely apart (especially when you have classes as differing as Ethics and Regression Analysis on the same day).
4) Next semester will bring me
- Combinatorial Optimization (an Econometrics course)
- Econometric Methods (an Econometrics course)
- Inventory Management (an Econometrics course)
- Risk Theory (an Econometrics course)
- History of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy 1 (a Philosophy course)
- Metaphysics (a Philosophy course)
- Philosophical Writing 1 (a Philosophy course)
Not sure if the Bachelor's/Master's thing is making any sense to you guys, as you all seem to be thinking in terms of "majors", but it seems that what I'm doing is roughly equivalent to two majors.
I see I'm not the only one here doing two majors. How hard (or easy) is it to combine different fields in one study programme in the US (or wherever you live)?
Túrin
It's not particularly hard most places. I'm actually doing a quasi-double major - at my school, Greek and Latin are separate programs, I'm doing one that combines both.
Quote from: Túrin2) I'll be in my third year of college (not sure what the proper term is, sophomore means it's your second year, right?).
Just for your reference, the terminology we use in the States is:
1st year: Freshman
2nd year: Sophomore
3rd year: Junior
4th year: Senior
:)
But since at the end of four years it looks like Turin will be walking out with two bachelors and one master's degree, it's not quite comparable. ;)

I would wager that you are correct, sir.

I thought this would teach you how to properly take over Asia from Kamchatka......
Double majors are easy, because they are both from similar fields; for example, both of mine are liberal arts -- political science and English. If I wanted to major in English and Business Administration, which are not similar fields, it would be a Duel Major, and considerably more difficult (but still quite possible).
I am starting school in a while (14 January 2008) at the University of Hawai'i at MÄnoa.
I am currently a sophomore (second-year) undergraduate, however, my credit standing is closer to a junior.
I am a Japanese major, and have not yet made a decision between minoring in Political Science or Linguistics.
Someone ask about this thread???
Vreeg revived it, so I have no problems posting in it.
1. Started August 20th
2. Freshman
3. Poli Sci/ Theater
4.
Environmental Science and Regional Planning
Comparative Politics
General Education (History from 1500 to now)
Introduction to Logic
Introduction to Psychology
Applied Theater Studies.
I started at ITT Tech near my area a little over 3 years ago.
I'm in my senior year finishing up for graduation in the summer of 08.
My major is Game Design. I also have an associates degree in Multi Media, mainly 3D modeling and animating.
My classes mostly resolve around Game Design, such as level design, game engines, script writing (my favorite area) etc. I do have a smattering of Gen Ed crap here and there (I have economic this coming term, yay...)
wooo senior in high school
University of Windsor Ontario, Political Science, halfway through second year. I definitely use everything I learn in class in Campaign Building.
1. My answer's a bit complicated:
When I get my student loans paid off or paid down and have decided what I want to do with my life and have decided on a school to enroll in and reapplied for financial aid, so maybe a year or two down the line.
2. Freshman flunkout. I may have passed a course or two on my first try, but which ones not even I know anymore.
3. My major the first time around was English with an emphasis on Language and Literature. It was sort of interesting, but I don't think I'm likely to go back to it. Grand Valley State University introduced a new Writing major, the year after I flunked out. If I can ever go back there as a student, I might go for Writing.
4. None. I flunked out six years ago. In the meantime being a bus boy at an Italian restaurant is fun, and being a trained chimpanzee at a Taco Bell brings in some money. I do sound a little more learned than the title of college flunkout might otherwise indicate, mainly because I read a lot and every now and again it's in a respectable sbuject area, like history or science.
Well, apparently I'm signed up for classes now at Nova, the community college in Northern Virginia. My dirty secret that I tend to keep to myself is that I'm a high school dropout, and I never seriously thought I'd ever get around to receiving a college education since structured schooling kills my soul. However, I was convinced that I should at least get my high school degree, so I'm signed up for a few classes that will fulfill my high school requirements and I'm *gasp* actually looking forward to my English classes. If they turn out to be boring though, I'm going to shoot myself.
1) I started school on August 27th.
2) I'm a sophomore at Indiana University.
3) I am an English Major (who is not going to be a teacher)
4) I'm taking L295, American Film Culture; F250, French Language and Culture; P101, Introductory Psychology I; H211, Ideas and Experience I (Honors).
My favorite class has been my French one, but only because of a couple of the students in it with me. Really, the best class I'm taking would be the English class, American Film Culture. My teacher is British, brilliant, and hilarious. Hopefully the final isn't going to be too tough though...

This is a great book for taking your econ class and translating that class into game design framework. This made me change almost all my guild-relationships (due to how they were affiliated) and forced my eventual decision to go to the 'electrum standard' in my world.

Can certainly happen...Does not have to, but certainly can...
No death, please. English class should not result in powder burns.
Next year I'll have even less time for the CBG, as I'll be taking 4-5 AP classes. Hard ones at that (AP Calculus BC, AP Physics BC, AP English, AP US History, and possibly AP Computer Science for those of you that are interested.)
-Survey of Earth Science
-Survey of Film
-Contemporary Humanities
-Bible as Literature
S'gonna be an interesting semester, hopefully with less writing.
So that I can spend more time here. :)
So, speaking of school...

I'm undecided right now, but I'm looking at either a sociology or anthropology major. Fitting for a world-builder, eh?
Very true on the fitting comment.
I'd argue that if you plan on writing anything, English is the best major, but I'm biased. :P
I'm English and Political Science, and I think those two are the best for world-building.
But I'll second Eclipse -- I'm bias.
Psychology and business did not do too poorly, either. Sadly, Notice the past tense.
School's winding down for this semester with one exam to go. Next semester, I'm taking the second half of Third Year Japanese, Articulatory Phonetics, Ethical Theory, and Intro. to Cultural Anthropology.
Cultural Anthro is an absolute joy (from what I remember).
Quote from: LordVreegCultural Anthro is an absolute joy (from what I remember).
Although I've already admitted no college experience, much less Cultural Anthro, for some inexplicable reason, I can't help but think of the possibility that you purposefully forgot the rest...
Political Science definitely helps with the world building. But I'm also biased...
