Title: Red Valor: Ferindor's Grave (In Character)
Post by: Elven Doritos on April 11, 2006, 05:56:38 PM
The echo of the patter of heavy rain emanated from within the dimly-lit Battered Baron Inn. It was a very slow night, and the barkeep was half-asleep behind his counter, awaking only when victimized by the poorly-maintained and leaking roof. The few patrons who were awake weren't any extraordinary sight, and the large fellowship hall seemed empty as about five of fifty tables were occupied.

Among the Inn's most intriguing host this evening were three human men donning full, sleek black armor, their heavy plates crunching and grinding as they made wild, drunken gestures. Each soldier had a strange ebony amulet strapped around their neck with a gleaming, embossed talon adorning it. Such soldiers were far from extaordinary within small towns in the Middlegrounds such as this, probably representing one Imperial faction or another.

Besides the armored men, most of the other patrons seemed rather customary for the town of Ambriel. A few gnomes quietly whispering and eyeing the other patrons over their drooping caps, a stodgy dwarf who had drank himself into unconciousness, and a pair of black-cloaked men whose eyes watched the door as their hands grasped their weapon sheaths.

An ordinary, dreary day in the Empire.

[ic=Raynor]Raynor walks in tired from the days ride. He is a big man, standing a head above the crowd as well as being broad. He has many scars from his semi-rough childhood, and his apprenticeship, most of which are on his hands. By the way he carries himself many can tell that he can hold his own in a battle. Raynor wears a leather vest with the symbol of Baiton, and brown leather pants with similar symbol.

He scans the scene and decides to sit at the bar. "Barkeep, one ale." He places 5 copper pieces on the bar and waits for his drink.

[ooc]YAY!!!!
Link to Raynor (http://www.thecbg.org/stuff/3eprofiler/view.php?id=3), just so he is on the first page

If you would prefer a different posting convention just say so, I'l change it.

A tall cloaked figure enters the inn and swiftly makes his way too the bar.  "Give me the strongest that you've got..."  A gloved hand emerges from the shadows of the cloak and places two gold pieces on the counter.[/ic]

[ooc]How was that?  I have some experience from RP chatrooms...

So, any clues as to what we're supposed to be doing?

[ic=Barkeep]The swarthy barkeep snaps to attention and strokes his grizzled beard thoughtfully at the sight of the two figures, eyeing them suspiciously. With a resigned shrug and a few seconds, the barkeep clanked a mug of ale in front of Raynor, mumbling something about being "lousy tipper". Hobbling over to the other patron, he winced briefly, his brown eyes looking over the cloaked man. Taking one of the gold pieces cautiously, he pushes back the other as he limped to a keg, bringing for a brew that seemed to foam and almost spark with potency. "'Ere ye go, laddie. Keep the rest, this a'int a charity."[/ic]

[ic=Aromel]Shortly after another figure enters the room, his black cloak ripped from countless travels. Weaving his way to the bar, Aromel takes a seat next to Raynor, his lithe figure sharply contrasting that of Raynor's. Pulling back the rain-soaked cowl to his cloak, the elf slides his black hair out of his dark green eyes, then reaches into the pouch strapped to his belt.

Producing two silver pieces, the elf places them down onto the counter. "I'll take some wine...red, if you have it." Pulling his hand away, a spark of red energy leaps from his fingertips to the silver pieces, where it briefly dances about the metal coins before disappating into nothing.[/ic]

After sneaking a quick glance at the newcomer, I take my drink and the other coin then retreat to the darkest table in the joint.  Once there, I sit down and take a long draft from my beverage.[/ic]

[ic=barkeep]A brown eye runs over the thin frame of the elf, and the barkeep nods. "Got enough, mistuh." With a faint smile, he pulls a half-empty bottle of rare Delphian wine, and judging by the label one of no small expense. "Six seventy seven.... i's a good year. I a'int had many of yer people around here in the past couple o' years... Take the bottle, on the house." The bearded man smiles his gap-toothed grin, and bows shortly, wincing again in pain. He takes an uncomfortable seat before two of his newest guests, dismissing the odd behavior of the third. "Any of ye be needin' rooms for the eve?"[/ic]

Raynor eyes the energy jump from the strangers hand. "If this rain keeps up then yes. Do you have a place to stable my horse as well?" He then turns to the elf. "Neat trick stranger. Where you from?"[/ic]

[ic= Barkeep]The barkeep nods enthusiastically. "I can have yer horse stabled across the street, sir. No' a problem. That an' a nice room for a single gold a night."[/ic]

[ic=Aromel]The elf gives a grateful nod of thanks to the barkeep and takes the bottle. Uncorking it, he turns his attention to the man sitting next to him, smiling slightly when he is addressed: it's been a long time since he's had a friendly conversation with someone. "Azrael's Pass. You?"[/ic]

[ic=Raynor] "Thank you. Here is an extra silver for the trouble" Raynor reaches into his pouch and pulls out 6 silvers and a gold coin and lays them on the bar.

"Vestin. What brings you out this way?" Raynor takes a sip of his ale.

[ic=Aromel]"Family. I need to learn why I can do that trick." Aromel smirks and takes another sip of the wine. Turning to the barkeep, he smiles and says, "This is a good year...oh, and I need a room as well."

Reaching back into his belt pouch, he produces a gold piece and lays it on the table.[/ic]

[ic=Aromel]"Not sure." Aromel melancholically replies. "Never knew my real father," the elf's tone suddenly grows wrathful, "and I hardly remember mother." The elf pauses for a moment, then speaks, his voice calm and tranquil again. "Sorry about that."[/ic]

[ic=Armored Man]With a low growl, one of the black-armored soldiers stands to his full height, glaring ferociously at the rather curious-looking gnomes. He shouts at them, "If you little buggers don't keep your eyes to yourselves, I'll be of the mind to gouge them out for ye!" With a murderous gleam in his eye, he took his seat again, an angry expression etched on his face. His companions laughed a bit, and the man seemed to still be in a foul temper.[/ic]
[ic=Barkeep]The barkeep, who seemed to be eavesdropping somewhat on his two guest's conversation, watched the sudden outburst by the soldier with a mixture of contempt and pity. He hardly seemed surprised, however, by the threat, and obviously had no intention on doing anything about it.[/ic]

[ic=Raynor] "Well, how do you plan on finding them?" Raynor mentally smacks himself. "Nevermind. That is your business. How bout a toast to... family"

Seeing the man verbally assualt the gnome, Raynor excuses himself from the elf. "Hello, friend. There is no need for any of that. They are here to have a good time as are you. How bout I buy you a round and we'll forget about the gnomes?"[/ic]

[ic=Armored Man]With a look to his companions, the man stands to match Raynor's height, although he comes half a head short. His short-cropped black hair and olive skin are close enough for Raynor to smell the booze on his breath. With a bit of a slur, the sweating man growls, "How about I cut your throat instead? I've no use for forgetting gnomes."[/ic]
[ic=Barkeep]"Och, that lad's in fer more than he bargained for with those three. They be Black Talon soldiers..."[/ic]

[ic=Somber Gnome]A quite sober gnome had been watching the conversation and hopped down from his seat, walking over to join Nobble. Despite being about the same height as Nobble and possessing the same hooked nose and high cheek bones, this gnome has dark lines under his eyes and has allowed his hair to grow much shaggier. The gnome is holding a hand to his throat. "Sorry about me brother," he rasps, the act of speaking causing him pain. "He's excitable. We don't have much to offer you anyhow..." The gnome coughs, a small drop of blood escaping his lower lip. "We've problems of our own."[/ic]

[ic=Somber Gnome]Warily eyeing the elf, the short-statured gnome shook his head, his hair flying into his face. "Not here. Not with..." He glances briefly at the black-armored soldiers, and looks back to Aromel. "Them. I also recommend getting out of here... They don't take kindly to non-humans." Offering Aromel a quick look, he said, quieter than before, "If you really do want to help, we'd be grateful. Go to the apothecary at the end of the street and ask for me-- Braddle." [[ic=DM Description]You approach a run-down building with red-painted wooden boards lining the broken windows. Above the doorway swings a small wooden sign, swinging to and fro, with the word's, "Aldren's Apothecary" etched deeply into it. Inside, a swarthy overweight man with messily parted (and quite thin) black hair taps his hand impatiently as he sat behind a marble counter. Occasionally, he brought a blue rag to his brow, wiping the sweat that appeared despite his inactivity.[/ic]

[ic=DM Description]As Sunetos and Aromel descend down the stairwell, the light of the apothecary dims and the dim lantern's illuminates the winding stairwell as best as possible. After a minute-long descent, the pair can see a small alter, a gnome lying stationary atop it. Three other gnomes surround him, sacromonial candles strewn around the small antechamber, the only passage besides the stairwell- a heavy stone door on the northernmost wall-- firmly sealed with runes that glow a soft blue. Braddle waves over the two visitors as Nobble and another, unidentified gnome looks on. Upon closer inspection, the dormant gnome appears to be alive, though his breaths are slow and shallow.[/ic]

[ic=Braddle]"I am glad you could make it. As you can see, things are dire."[/ic]

[ic=Jae'kal]Back at the inn, a a tall dark garbed stranger enters from the rain. He is drenched and a spout of water runs off of his hat as he tilts his head. The man glances around the room and then stalks over to the bar and leans towards the barkeep.
"I am in need of lodgings and sustenance for the night. My horse as well. I do not wish for any cheery old inkeep routine, the room will be enough. However, I wouldst be interested to hear news of any strange folk here as well" And sliding 2 gold peices across the bar, he whispers "I can most assuredly make it worth your while".[/ic]

[ooc] i'll just join in with the rest when either you get back, Raynor leaves his room, or i have some reason to follow you[/ooc]

[ic=Barkeep]The gruff barkeep clears his throat and snorts indignantly. "Coulda said, 'please', ye know." Snatching up a spare silver key that gleams in the dim candlelight, he looks the stranger in the eye. "As for queer folk, some none stranger than ye were jes' in here, from what I reckon." He leans inward, looking briefly to the black-armored soldiers.  His voice was hardly a whisper. "Tryin' to put some distance with that breed, I reckon."[/ic]

[ic=Jae'kal]"That is intresting news. My apologies, it has been a very long day and the rain does nothing to improve my mood. You have my thanks." Leaning in close and glancing at the soldiers he whispers, "Did you hear these folk says where they be going? Or are they perchance staying in this establishment?"[/ic]

[ic=Aromel]Gazing at the sacromonial candles and the rune-covered door, the Aromel shudders at the entire scene. I don't like this...and yet...I do...

Listening to Sunetos, the elf glances at his companion's tapping foot. Taking a step forward, he quickly tries to cover up for Sunetos' impatient actions. "I think what he's trying to ask is why are things so dire?" His eyes settle on the dying gnome, though he makes no move to rush to their aid without more information.[/ic]

[ic=Braddle]With a solemn expression firmly across his gnomeish features, Braddle steps out of the ritualistic circle, looking to the two approaching figures with a solemn expression. His eyes occasionally dart between the runic door and the dormant gnome, and with a sigh, he quietly begins to speak. "I am sorry to have to involve you in our concerns, but as you said, things are quite dire. My fellows-- gnomes all--  have been dispersed and hunted throughout Ketta since the end of the Third War. After the Emperor stopped attacking insurgent troops in Baltia, his soldiers began to focus on non-humans." Looking mournfully at the gnome lying in rest, Braddle holds back tears. "That is my eldest brother, Gribbin. A poison courses through his veins that has weakened him. Nobble's dweomers have delayed the poison, but he cannot last much longer." His eyes close, and his voice takes on a vengeful tone. "It was the blade of a Black Talon warrior that poisoned my brother three nights ago, and it is against them I have sworn a blood oath. Unfortunately, my skills-- those of illusion-- are of no use against such a mighty military power. This is why I called you."[/ic]

[ic=Jae'kal]"Very well. In that case, I will stable my horse and retire for the night. If they look to leave tommorow morning before i rise, I entreat you to find some way to delay them. I would be most greatful. A safe evening to you, sir." And with that he replaced his hat and strode out into the rain to see to his horse and gear, before departing for his room.[/ic]

[ic=Aromel]"So you want us to fulfill your blood oath by killing the Black Talon soldiers who poisoned your brother?" Aromel thinks about this for a moment, a sinister grin creeping across his face. "How would you like it done?" No! Shaking his head, the elf's features become calm and serene again.

"I'm sorry, but I don't think I can fulfill your oath in cold blood. Your brother is not yet dead, so they do not yet deserve the punishment of death. I'm willing to help, but first I need to know a few things."

"First, do you want us to try and find an antidote? If these are soldiers then they most likely have one. Second," his dark green eyes flit about the room, "why are you in a place like this?"[/ic]

[ic=Sunetos]Sunetos cuts in hastily, "Do you honestly believe that these men could deserve to live?  That this could be their first crime!?", and then to the gnome "Do you have any leads on which soldiers attacked him?  Where they went?  Anything?"[/ic]

[ic=Aromel]"You may be right, but we do not know how many crimes they have committed." He grins and slips a slender but muscular hand out of the confines of his cloak. With another frightening smile the elf's hand erupts with eldritch power, the red energy sparking between his fingers and leaping into the air like small bolts of crimson lightning. "Let's find out first."[/ic]

[ic=Braddle]The stern gnome nods slowly, listening to both men converse. "This.... This is not your matter. I could not bear the thought of what would happen to you in my place-- if you were injured or even killed, my concious could never be eased."  His deep brown eyes slowly look over Sunetos and then Aromel, and nods. "No, I do not wish for you to engage the Black Talon unless you absolutely must. I want an anti-toxin powerful enough to stay the poison... And then vengence will be mine." [/ic]

[ic=Braddle]Braddle looks to Sunetos and nods slowly. After a short pause, he gruffly speaks, holding his throat tenderly. "I know of a cure. Unfortunately, it's not going to be easy to get to it... The only antidote outside of the ranks of Black Talon would be that of the poisonmixer himself." Braddle closes his eyes, and speaks slowly. "A particularly wicked hag in the Blackmarshes of Vestin is the creature responsible for the vile concoction, and it will be easier to get to her than to break the ranks of Black Talon."[/ic]

[ic=Braddle]The gnome shakes his head disapprovingly. "I do not doubt that Black Talon soldiers would be carrying the antidote. I would warn you that it is very dangerous to confront any Kettan soldier, and these are among the most elite you can find. If you are going to try and steal an antidote from them, do your best to ensure that you will not have to fight them. A more dangerous foe you will not find within this town."[/ic]

[ic=Aromel]Giving a sigh, the elf concedes to the gnome's disapproval. "How long does your brother have to live, then?" Glancing around the room again, Aromel also notices that one of his questions has been dodged. "And you still haven't told me what you are doing in this place." [/ic]

[ic=Braddle]With a long look to his dormant brother, he shakes his head. "We do not know, but with magic, we should be able to delay the poison's degenerative effects for another few weeks." With another long glance, this time at Aromel, he gives a resigned sigh. "We came to this place by accident while we were fleeing attackers, and the owner of the shop decided he would hide us. He gave us this strange alcove to hide in, which he admitted to not knowing about previously, and we have been here since."[/ic]

[ic=Aromel]"Well, you might want to get your brother off of there." Aromel motions at the platform which the dying gnome is lying on.

"That is a sacrificial altar. If he dies on it, there's no telling what might happen." Pausing for a moment, Aromel glances at Sunetos as he mulls over the information he has been given before turning his attention back to the gnome. "If I help, will you be able to find some information for me in my absence? I'm looking for an elf - my mother, to be precise. I don't remember her too well, but my guess would be that she had relations with an elf of fiendish appearances. If you can find either her location or that of her lover I will gladly travel to the Black Marshes."

Turning to Sunetos, he reassures the impatient elf of this sudden change of plans. "If these soldiers are as dangerous as he claims them to be, killing one or two of them whilst they are in a drunken stupor could have some dire repercussions. Let's cure his brother first, then focus on spilling blood."[/ic]

[ic=Braddle]Braddle sighs, holding back his brother. "Thank you, good sir. We will look into the matter immediately." With a look of embarrasment, he nods. "And as for the alter, many apologies. I am ill-informed when it comes to the dark arts.... It's the area Gribbin's expertise."[/ic]

[ic=Sunetos]Grumbling, Sunetos pulls his cloak's hood back up,  muttering, "Might as well do something.  Better than just sitting around in this gloomy little town..."  He then turns to follow Aromel up the stairs, mumbling under his breath various things which can be safely assumed are obscenities, but not loud enough to be made out for sure...[/ic]

[ic=Jae'kal]Entering the common room, Jae'kal sits at a table and pulls a flask of purified water from his belt and takes a sip.
"Where am i from? In truth, nowhere. Or else, anyplace I have been to in my travels. Now, were you to ask where i was born, well, it was a small town west of here. Born there yes, but never given the chance to live there. Besides, it's long gone into ashes and memories..." He takes a long swig from his flask, then mutters "Hells, I lit the torch myself."
He stares into space for a moment, then continues, "But that is in the past now, and the future holds new stories, such as your own. Would'st you spin your own tale?"[/ic]

[ic=Aromel]A few moments later the inn door swings open and Aromel enters, his head safely kept dry in the confines of his cloak's cowl. Leaving the door open for Sunetos, the elf heads over to where Raynor and Jae'kal and takes a seat across from the newcomer. Pulling back the hood of his cloak, the elf sighs and turns his attention to Raynor.

"We have a problem. The gnomes are being hunted by Black Talon soldiers, and one of them has been poisoned. If he doesn't recieve an antidote in the next few weeks, he will perish. I have been told where to find such an elixir, but the journey will be long..."

Glancing at the hilt of Raynor's sword, Aromel lets his eyes settle on the blacksmith's face. "I need someone skilled in the art of melee combat. I see you have a sword, and I assume that you know how to use it. If you wish to accompany us I can assure you what you'll experience, and possibly earn, will make the journey worthwhile. Besides," the elf grins, "I could use some friendly company."

Turning his attention to Jae'kal, the elf gives him a curious look. "I know you from somewhere...were you one of the ones I missed?"[/ic]

If y'all want to do this just post it here for now. Also, if anybody has a preference of what level they want to start at tell me that asap. (i have an idea i want to try out for a short adventure, but it's higher level (like 13 or so). Or i have a rough campaign in the works that could go from like 1 to several into epic but you could be inserted into it at several points.)
