Title: Roundtable Discussion: Fantaseum Journal, Issue 2
Post by: Ishmayl-Retired on August 31, 2007, 11:49:50 PM
Well, Issue 7 is about to be wrapped up, so I figure it's time to start discussing what we can do for issue 8.  Let's talk themes, and then we'll get a few article ideas going.  Here are a few themes (both that I've thought of, and some that were listed last time that we didn't use):

Undeath.
Fey.
Riddles.
Savage Races.
Immortal Races.
Law and Chaos.
Seafaring.

Talk!

I agree with the sea god. Seafaring got enough of a request last time we asked that it seems like we'd want to pick it this time.

And thanks, Ish. I knew there was something that needed doing that I spaced out. ;)

Hmmmm, that's an interesting theme.  I can support that.  But wow, we could really get creative and do a lot with it.  How many articles are you going to write, Poseidon, 8 or 9 or so?

Write as many as you can!  If we can't fit them this issue, we'll get them in another one.  However, I do agree, Seafaring would make a great issue.  So are we looking at volunteered articles from Poseidon and Jharviss? ;)

Oh!  Oh!  I've got one!  (Yay, Angel's finally gonna write an article!)

It'll be something on the Abyssian Faerie, a shamed (or perhaps betrayed) fey caste that was thrown to the crushing deeps where no Sidhe magic can be worked.  Stripped or their glamours, their forms reveal the true grotesquery at the heart of every fey.

I haven't touched my D&D books for a while now, but I think it's about time I brushed the dust off.

(I figured this article would be a great way to combine Fey, Undeath and Seafaring in one)

Ideas:
Encounters on the High Sea - Making ship travel more than an instant trip from city A to city B.
World Design: What part does the world's ocean play?
Creatures of the Deep - A new ocean going monster.
Book Review: Stormwrack

I'm sure more ideas will pop into my head (they always do). I will "*try*" to do at least one of these ideas. (Either 1 or 2 because they are very similar). I would encourage any one that thinks they can write any of these articles to do so. I am in a writing rut right now (as anyone that has read my last thread can see), so I will try, but cannot promise, to write an article for a seafaring guide.

Well, my fey article should include at least two monsters.

Also, if I get on a roll, I might do an article on Oceanic Rituals (magical stuff anyone can do while out on the open waters).

Schweet!  That would be great SA.

* By the way, what does your current name (Yaji Ash-Shuthath) mean?  I know it's from the Cthulhu stuff, but I couldn't find if there was any sort of translation or definition of?

It's believed to be what Yog-Shoggoth's name was derived from.  It means "there is no peace at the gates".

I'm thinking about contributing, and I'd probably do Uncommon Evil again...I know you shouldn't get known for one thing, but its fun being evil.   :demon:

I was thinking only two villains this time (~3K words), and I'd keep with the theme of seafaring:
a dolphin turned to the dark side
and a half bronze dragon pirate

SA and Poseidon, just wanted to find out for sure if you guys would be contributing to this?  If so, could you PM me some specifics?  I'm about to draw up some requests for particular articles, and want to make sure I don't request something you guys are already doing.  That goes for anyone else here as well!

I'm thinking about contributing, if that's alright.  At the very least I could get in some practice so that I can eventually contribute.

Article Ideas:

Encounters and Adventures on the high seas.
Fantasy Naval Warfare Tactics

Thanks for offering Ivar!  Either of those topics would make for great seafaring articles.  If you haven't picked a favorite yet, the "Encounters and Adventures on the High Seas" jumped out at me - I could imagine a few different scenarios being described with different villains (or even non-villains - who says an encounter has to end in bloodshed?) in different oceanic locales.

with Encounters and Adventures on te high see, why dont you do an encounter with undead that are manning aa ship and being controlled by an evil necromancer (that would probably be a good adventure hook where it leads to the base for a cabal of evil pirating necromancers of course). But if that sounds good, i wont be writing it.  [blockquote Poseidon]*GULP* Mmmmmmmeeee? Article(s)? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I read, me not write. Me write poorly. Me no no good enlgish.......[/blockquote] as is me. i not write. bad at writing well for stuff like that.

Okay, so far for this upcoming issue, we seem to have a few good potentials here:

Ivar: Either "Encounters and Adventures on the High Seas" or "Fantasy Naval Warfare Tactics"

KeshFerrar: "Uncommon Evil of the SEA"

Salacious Angel: (to quote) "It'll be something on the Abyssian Faerie, a shamed (or perhaps betrayed) fey caste that was thrown to the crushing deeps where no Sidhe magic can be worked. Stripped or their glamours, their forms reveal the true grotesquery at the heart of every fey" as well as (possibly), "Oceanic Rituals"

Possibly something from Poseidon?

Guys, this is an excellent start to a SeaFaring issue of the Guide.  I believe we could make a great issue with this, but if anyone else wants to get on the action, now's the time!

When is the deadline? If it is anytime soon, then I won't have anything. Every time I try to wright something my mind goes blank.

Well, our deadlines in the past have been pretty arbitrary.  I think the best course - and I'll let Raelifin come in here and tell me I'm wrong if I am - would be to not apply a deadline until we get a few articles in, which is what we basically did last issue.  Otherwise, come XX/XX/2007, we will have only 2 articles, and neither of them will deal with the theme.  So right now, we'll just say we're shooting for a late October release, with a relatively mid-October deadline.

I couldn't decide which topic I wanted to write on, so I'm going to combine them!

I'm going to do an "Encounters and Adventures on the High Sea" article, and within the article describe various naval tactics that a group in one of the encounters use!
