Hey everyone!
I plan on making a campaign focusing on what in our world is Europe. I plan on having the Roman Empire be strong, even though it is medieval times. Polytheism is still the main religion of the Roman Empire. To the south where Egypt is is Aegyptus, a sort of take on Egypt at the time. The "untamed frontier" would be France, Spain, and Germany.
Races: I was thinking about having humans mainly populating the Italian peninsula, and dwarves basically in all mountain chains (Alps, Pyranees, etc). Raptorans, painted elves, and other "Sandstorm" races would live in Saharan Africa. I was thinking of having Gnomes as an advanced Democracy located in Macedonia/Greece. Orcs would be a tribal race that is a menace in most of the northern Mediterrainian. I really am not sure what to do with elves, should I put them in Bohemia?
I would appreciate anyone's take and would really appreciate suggestions about what to do with what I have. If you think a certain area should be a certain way, please don't hesitate to give your opinion!

Erm... alt-history has never been my forte, but won't you have to change a lot to make it fit the new races? How is magic going to work?

Fine by me. Make Rome the humans seems fitting. I would also make the Brits human, since they would be the next real power (later in history).

I disagree. Make the ultra-lawful dwarves the replacement for the Semitic nations along the eastern edge of the Mediterranean.

Cool. I'd reserve a few of them for the Gobi desert, should the players get that far.

Make them the greeks, allies with Rome instead of conquered by them.

You mean make the celts of Gaul into elves? That's a good fit, actually.

Well, if you're doing medieval, with rome, you might need to establish where the change in history is before you worry about the races. France wasn't really around then, though I think elves could work well as the artistic side of the Renaissance (not sure if you're going that far).
That could be a fun setting. Play on and up stereotypes; I think dwarves should be the celts (people always make them sound scottish). I like gnomes being the greeks. I'd make elves atlantians, just to play up the classic idea of elves being ancient and in decline. Orcs could be the germanic celts (different from the norse celts).
Hrm. I advise taking a look at the Byzantine Empire for inspiration on a medieval-roman empire. Heck, they -were- a medieval roman empire... even if they were more greek by origin than italian.
if you are including asia in this you might want to also make the orcs Mongols.
