Title: Arannia - The World of Sundered Hope ~update on SkyFallen~
Post by: Towel Ninja on October 15, 2007, 01:26:49 PM
Arannia Idea/Storming thread.

Arannia is a world that has had every kind of cataclysm known to man. And yet against all odds the people of arannia have always found the will and the drive to live on. Shortly after the first age of cataclysms people began to drift away from religion and gods, believing themselves to be forsaken.

The world is made up of about 30-40% land and the rest is water except for the sea of lava. The  5 major continents are usually at peace until a power hungry leader comes along and drives the world into war like it has been many times before. Each race governs a continent except for rare occasions when a different race comes into power on a different continent.
Leinzil '" Leinzil is an average size continent in which the largest population of  SkyFallen live, there is also a large population of humans, any other races living here are largely outnumbered. Leinzil is also the leading continent in steam technology as it is a common thing here.  The capital was built off of the fragment that the SkyFallen arrived upon. This fragment is actually a large piece of the SkyFallens original capital city, which the strongest Astromancers gave their last breath to ensure a safe passage to another planet. When the fragment collided with Arannia a large explosion could be seen almost everywhere on the planet, The explosion was so bright and lasted so long that darkness never came for days. When the explosion subsided and the skyfallen emerged they discovered a marvelous landscape that was untouched for ages. Within days the SkyFallen had staked their claim and established a new country that would soon rise to power quicker then anyone would expect.
The world has gone through roughly 7 ages. Each age consists of 1000 years. A Year consists of 10 Months. A Month consists of 39 days. There is a total of 391 days.

In the Current age there are 5 major continents, 5 Known Humanoid (playable) races...(train of thought broke here)

Races are Humans, Dwarves, Elves, Halflings, and the SkyFallen.

Some Steam Tech and Gunpowder is Discovered.
Flex Metal ~ this is being redone and will be posted later.

Steam Tech ~ being redone

SkyFallen

The skyfallen are a very intelligent race from the planet Mer'Denz. They are tall and slim race with long ears, they have a natural ash color to their skin, their hair is usually a soft blue/green color and their eyes slits like cats due to them being from a planet with hardly any light as it was to far from the sun. They have a long life span of about 200 years, which they consider to be short compared to other races on their home planet.

SkyFallen have always had a love for technology and have dedicated themselves to it for as long as they can remember. They had developed clockwork technology and had began to tinker with magitech when their planet was destroyed, after they had become welcomed by the other civilizations on arannia they found the more advance tech here to be fascinating and started to study it until they to had equal tech and in some ways even better tech.

The skyfallen have a different type of magic that they developed on their planet, they dubbed it Astromancy which is a magic that utilizes the power of space and everything in it. The skyfallen developed this magic when they felt an odd aura of power emanating from a freshly fallen meteor. The most magically gifted SkyFallen used his powers to manipulate this power and thusly '˜Astromancy' was invented.

Religion '" The SkyFallen have always believed in a higher power but few have dedicated themselves to this power.

Polls don't work. Sorry.

And the word "Arania" is good, but I don't like "Apocalypses."

yeah i noticed they dont work and was about to take it down. the name of the world is staying but the verdict is still out on the (sub?)title.

i was trying to come up with something that would convey the thought of a world always torn by one natural disaster or another. might you have any suggestions that would be great.

"Arania" sounds very much like "aranea" from the MM.

Also, I concur with Raelifin about "apocalypses." You can't really have more than one apocalypse in a world, since an apocalypse is the literal End of the World. What about something like "cataclysms" instead?

Arania - The World of Sundered Hope

Edit: "Arannia" might also look nicer than Arania.
Double-Edit: Unless for some odd reason you pronounce it ah-rain-ee-ah...

Meepo: it is the end of the world, but i do plan for this world to end multiple times. (wierd time  stuff involved lol)

Raelifin: i do like that title alot and i must say that Arannia does look more appealing. i think i will use that, if you dont mind of course.

Edit: I say Ah-Ron-Ee-Ah (im poor at spelling out how i pronounce words)

Good. That's how it looks, and yes, you may of course use that spelling.

I always thought they should just go ahead and call her Arachne.

Strictly speaking, an apocalypse is a revelation of the end of the world (it's Greek for "Revelation"), so you could have more than one of those.

Also, any form of cyclical time can account for multiple ends of the world, as with the kalachakra (Wheel of Time) in Dharmic religions, ending in the Kali Yuga. For example, Kishar is in its 71st iteration.

This looks pretty good. A nice start anyway.

If you're planning on incorporating a thematic number into your setting, I advise against five. There are already two settings on this board that make extensive use of that number (one of which being mine). Not saying you can't, it just might lend better to differentiate.

Having said that, I look forward to reading more.

Alright, someone needs to ask for it: let's hear more about "Flex Metal," Skyfallen, and Steam Tech. There's no way any of that can do anything other than rock.

Steam Tech? Do I see Steam Tech? What extent are we seeing - is this trains steam tech or is this roving steam-mecha steam tech?

And Flex Metal sounds alot like my quicksteel, so I look forward to what you have with that.

stargate: 5 isnt going to have any importance in my world, there is a race that developed on each continent.

Epic: My next update will have more info on the three subjects. (glad to hear there are people taking an interest in my world)

Eclipse: It will vary sorta, they have some basic steam tech and a couple things that are highly advanced. vehicle wise they will have trains and rarely some airships.

*more when i update later tonight or tommorow*

I would be very, very careful to explicitly describe anything as 'indestructible.' That can lead to loads of issue with 'creative' players and their search for invincibility.

Yeah, it is indestructible but i already explained its downfall. the dm can just have someone pop up with the proper crystal to destroy the metal.

That sounds as annoying as providing a real challenge to Superman: shall we use Kryptonite, or Kryptonite?

its the only thing i could come up with to counter the indestructible-ness.

or i could have it break any time a dragon breath attack is used on it. one of the two. i like the crystal idea and usually you wont come across the crystal unless your playing in the 6th age. The metal is rare and like i said the crystal with the metal is rarer. IF someone does infact have the crystal chances are very unlikely they will be like "hmm i think this is the crystal that formed that metal!" and then proceed to poke your weapon. each weapon only has one weakness like i said. not just ANY crystal will break the metal down to its liquid state.

I like the flex metal, but I agree with the indestructible being a flaw. Perhaps it's only indestructible in a limited quantity - you could make a sword out of it, and perhaps a shield, but not a suit of armor, preventing players from forming a suit of flex armor or even a flex breastplate, where only a few gaps that allow movement providing soft spots. (Though I /know/ my players would make a flex codpiece.)

QuoteThat sounds as annoying as providing a real challenge to Superman: shall we use Kryptonite, or Kryptonite?

I normally don't do this, but sigged.

i like the idea eclipse because one of my players just asked what would happen if they had a piece of armor crafted out of say 2-4 different sources of flex metal. would all four crystals destroy it thus making it a little easier to break or would it simply make it so you have to hit it on a piece of the armor where that certain bit of flex metal is more dominant. i couldnt come up with a good answer lol xD also he asked if it would just destroy that bit of the flex metal but since the rest is intact would it still be the same armor with the same strength, i came up with a yeah probably for this xD.

But why does it have to be indestructible? Why not just seriously tough? As is stands, what I want to do is build a dome out of it, stick a tank underneath, then wreak merry havok as I run about underneath my indestructible shield.

i think i might just make it really really tough.. And the reason i didnt think of the players using it to b*tch me is because my players and i have decided that no one shall go out of their way to exploit stuff like that or i/one of the players shall smack him down with my  wooden katana lol xD

I'd like to hear more about the races and their cultures in your world, especially the SkyFallen and how/if your races differ from the standard interpretation. The inclusion of steam and gunpowder into your setting is also interesting, and I'd like to see how you incorporate it within your setting along with traditional things like magic and monsters.

Skyfallen: chunk of planet falls from sky :o ... how the hell did you come up with something that awesome? Lotta homebrew races I'm not too keen on (like humans/elves/halflings/dwarves... only different). I don't even know anything about these guys and they're already interesting as hell.

People used to cataclysms: This reminds me of a scene in that old Hercules cartoon that was just hilarious. I know hilarious is hardly what you're looking for in successive plagues, but...

Steam and gunpowder: I've been an advocate for a long time. I'm looking forward to seeing how you incorporate it.

Ok... i havent been here in ages(this thread) and wel i decided to force myself to update/change stuff. especially with people asking me to go more in depth (it helps me to keep going). Also i will open a discussion thread in the next few days so you can of course, discuss arannia. I might have a small update tonight but ill list the top things i will update on.

---
SkyFallen - I have seen some people asking for these guys so i will try to come up with a good update soon on them

Steam tech - Here is a mini update, i have decided to not only include steam tech but also Clockwork tech and some Magitech (steam will be a "hybrid" of the two and will of course be better then both in some ways blah blah blah..)

Other Races - I will try and update on these races and i do plan to have them vary from the normal phb description.

Arannia - Ok, i plan to start with one continent that will be a healthy mix of races (so i can better introduce them all. )

Flex Metal - After some thinking i have decided to largely rethink this part but it will of course keep the flex abilities.
---

Like i said, look forward to atleast on update tommorow but beyond that i cant promise anything. (have to learn to play my bass)

You asked for us to ask for what we'd like updated. I'm interested in the races, as I said earlier. I don't feel you need to make them extraordinarily different, though: if it looks like a dwarf, drinks like a dwarf, and smells like a dwarf, you might as well call it a dwarf. Helps people envision them more.
