Ever had a random idea that would work for a setting, or a game, or a feat, or whatever, but you don't have a setting to post it in? Plop it down here. This thread it to provide a resource for people looking for inspiration, as well as a place to get random ideas critiqued and looked over.
I'll start.
One image I haven't been able to get out of my head since i saw it is the temple of bocobob in the DMG 2. It is basically a temple with a giant glass bulb on top of it. It'd be interesting to see what kind of culture could create that type of arcitecture.

I don't actually have the DMG II, but I suppose it would take something like glassteel to make a dome of that size, that would be stable in any way. Some sort of astological society, that studies the movements of the heavenly bodies, would be a good fit. Maybe they make prophecies based upon the celestial bodies, and the prophets could be wizards, cleric, or even theurges, who revere Boccob.

Let me jump in here too. I've always hated subraces. From an evolutionary and cultural standpoint don't humans seem like the most likely race to adapt and change to suit their enviroment? Well let's put that debate behind us (it always degenrates into flame wars) and consider this.
What if there were a category of feats available only to humans, that they could spend their level one bonus feat on, which represented various
human sub-races. Maybe an aquatic feat, or a desert feat, or an arctic feat, for environmental based sub-races. Possibly a demonic feat, or a celestial feat, or an aberration feat to represent bloodline related sub-races. Any thoughts?

I really like that, actually. It makes sense that in a fantasy world that spawns various versions of every different race, humans would spawn subraces as well, and having them take it as a bonus feat would mean, so long as the feat was well designed, that there wouldn't be any balance issues. An elegant solution to a complex problem: I love it.
I suggest making it like a race or class ability, like powerful build, or environmental acclimation, or something. Just a little thing that would give that human something special, like the other races all seem to have.
Well the idea was that humans have a bonus feat anyway, so we might as well put it to use on something only a human can use.
Someday i want to see a campaign where humans aren't actually the most common race, nor used (even subconsciously) as a baseline for all other races. I'm talking like: the only civiliziation of humans is a horde of magic-hating barbarians that live up in the mountains, occasionally riding down to wreak havoc on the more civilized races. Just anything besides 'humans are the normal guys, and then you have these bunch of other weird races, who act mostly like humans except for one or two differences'.
One time i brainstormed a campaign where the only main civilization was elves, and they were fighting another, evil, empire of elves, with each faction getting minor support from the other races. this is before i realized a crapload of elven subraces wasn't actually that cool. :)
That's actually what my campaign has. All the primary races (esp. humans) have been removed, changed or relegated to a minor role. Humans either don't exist, or there are a few living among a small nation of halflings. Main races is orcs now (who are way cooloer in my opinion).
As for my idea, i always wanted to make a class of technologists that actually worked. I'm thinking something similar to the Sparks for the Girl Genius stories (for those who read them. go i love the Foglio's. they rock so much).
The technologist idea is cool. I think someone made one on the wizards boards awhile back, though I don't know where that is. What are the "sparks?"
In the wolrd that the Girl Genius comics take place in, there is basically a "mad scientist gene". it's a bit hard to explain otherwise, but these people with the gene - known as Sparks - have the ability to make brilliant but frequently insane contraptions. Some of the more powerful ones, can build a really powerful Clank (steam powered robot basically) out of bits and peices from a scrapyard, almost ovenight.
I tried to start making something like this when i was working on the 'Indistinguishable from magic" CS with Areas over on the WotC boards.
I was bored earlier today, and I have heard bits and pieces about how truename magic works with skill checks. so, I had a random thought that a magic system could be made where ranks are acquired in different skills, and each spell could have a different DC or something... Maybe if you fail the check you take a CON penalty or take damage to HP... Not a very well thought out idea, but I thought it was possibly worth mentioning...

I like this. It sounds kind of like the Force skill in star wars. I tried making my own variation on it, but I went way too complex and screwed it up. Still, it's a good idea if done right. Just remember KISS.

KISS stands for Keep It Simple, Stupid. Just for those who weren't already in the know.[/note]
